Greetings!
This is a Beta repackage meant for dev use only. I personally use it, but have not done heavy testing as I only use it to recover my phone before I test custom roms on it. If you need a release quality unbrick please either use the original Odin version from gtg465x: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116251 or Adam Outler's one-click: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331381
This is a repackage of gtg465x's famous Ultimate UnBrick: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116251 All credit other than the heimdall packaging goes to him. The rest you can blame on me.
I got tired of having to switch to Odin every time I borked my phone (i.e. several times a day) and I usually have heimdall up anyway, so I made myself some packages for unbricking. Now that I finally have enough posts, I thought I'd share them with everyone. THESE ARE UNTESTED other than my own personal use. I assume you know how to use heimdall. If you don't, I strongly recommend not using these packages.
This one is a straight up repackage:
http://www.mediafire.com/?9oy63q0t034yqbz
To use:
1. put your Infuse into download mode
2. open Heimdall (it is ok if it was already open).
3. on the "Load Package" tab browse to the file and open it, then click "Load/Customize" (they spell it Customise, so don't be confused).
4. This should take you to the flash tab. Make sure that "repartition" is checked, and click "start"
5. Let the phone reboot, and you should be good to go (haha).
This package is the same, but has the community kernel v8 thrown in so that you can go straight to recovery and flash something else if you want:
http://www.mediafire.com/?zlsipo9q4ha6xxu
Same instructions as above plus:
edit: I just realized that even though I included a PIT and Re-partition is checked it is not getting rid of previous content so I guess I missed something. So yeah, go back to recovery and wipe stuff if you are going to keep using it for some reason.
Thanks to gtg465x for all your work, and to all the people who worked on the community kernel!

I just tried it, and at the end it said ERROR: claiming interface failed! My phone didn't restart either
I did a quick search and it looks like that error has to do with the USB drivers installed.

Because I already released this in Heimdall One-Click format. You'll be better off using mine as it will ensure you can't screw things up.

Adam, I already linked to yours in the op. My package is just as easy to use if you already use heimdall and you have to purposefully go out of your way to break it. Plus, I use an officially released stock image instead of a broken leak.
I personally find my package to be much easier to use and just thought others might benefit from it.

You linked to a single leaked firmware I posted. The back-to-stock is the one to use.
Your package is not easier. Heimdall-frontend's interface is rough. You don't have to try to screw it up, only click in the wrong place. Drivers are automatically installed. Dependencies are automatically loaded. Heimdall one-click is safer than heimdall. One-click requires no package selection. Also, you need not download anything except a one-click.
A tar.gz file is not really complete. You can package your own one-clicks with the one-click packager I created here: http://oneclick.adamoutler.com . A one-click contains the tar.gz file and everything required to run it on Windows, Linux and Mac.
Hm, the subject of your thread that I linked to says one click back to stock so I assumed it was your one click back to stock package. As of the date of my original post that was the only back to stock that you had posted. That post states it uses the uckj4 (gb) build, which is not a stock build. It is a leak. The most current stock build last time I checked is uckh1(froyo).
I just found it rude to post in someone else's thread and say your solution is better. I don't mean to make an attack and if I am wrong then I apologize.
As I mentioned, if you already use heimdall, and know how to use it.it is a simple matter to click load package, and then click on start. It is pretty straight forward. If you don't know how to use heimdall, then as I said, your package or gtg's package are better choices.
When I am building a Rom I like to be able to swap out kernels or recoveries or other individual components. Heimdall is the easiest way to do that for me. I keep it open the entire time I am doing dev, and since I need to go back to stock for testing purposes, the easiest way to do that is heimdall. Loading another package, even one as easy to use as yours, is not the fastest or easiest solution.
I don't expect people to reply, or even use my solution, but it is not useful to have one of XDA's most well known devs coming and saying what you said.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda premium
There is no benefeit to this thread. My solution is better. I don't trust anyone with 30 posts to create a proper recovery package. Your flash is not complete.
Why not just use the complete, tried and true, heimdall package I've prepared?
Watch these videos to show how to package and unpackage.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6E8_iIaPHo&feature=youtube_gdata_player
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGWm8oolEf8&feature=youtube_gdata_player
untrusted dev: single package that returns phone to original stock state.
trusted dev: single package that returns phone to broken leaked non-official state.
untrusted dev: package listed as beta dev only
trusted dev: package passed off as being release quality and complete.
What is my package missing? If I left something out than I would like to rectify that problem. I am on vacation and don't have a good enough internet connection to download it and check, but I was pretty sure I included all the parts that yours does. I know for certain that it includes all the parts that gtg's does. I have returned my phone to stock from a soft-bricked state 20+ times using my package and never had a problem once. I haven't had a chance to test it more because I ran out of ideas for how to break the phone.
Tell me how your solution is better. Do you not get the fact that while your package you posted in the Infuse dev forum is an EXCELLENT tool for unbricking it DOES NOT return the phone to stock. In my mind, that means that your package is not complete, and does not fulfill its stated purpose. If I have to make a new package using your tool so that it does actually return to stock, then I've already had to do more steps than I need to do.
I don't really care if you trust me or not. My package works and does what it is supposed to. I don't have to share my work with the community as I build up my reputation, but i chose to because if it helps even one person than it was worth it. I don't have many posts because although I've been reading this site daily for almost a year I haven't posted to ask questions because I know how to use the search button and find answers without having to ask. I haven't offered many solutions till recently because I wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing before I started to post. Now that I have started posting I am starting to regret the decision to do so because of you and other people like you.

Indeed. The current stock gingerbread you will get from kies is more stable then anything in this forum.
There are some really cool froyo roms in the dev forum, but even so, if you don't know why you want to flash your phone, stick with stock. If you know why you want to flash your phone, but are looking for resources to help you. Then look no further then the search button at the upper right side of the forum page on your browser. Google also works.

Well, I'm not here to tell you what to do. Just want to give fair warning that even though the roms in this forum are for the SGH-T959V, you can still brick your phone by not paying attention and not reading all of the instructions to the T.
These mods will void your warranty. Luckly there are services out there that will unbrick your phone and jigs that will help to get your phone into download mode.
Download mode is for flashing with Odin or Heimdall. I prefer to show users how to use heimdall, as it is open-source and runs on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.
You can get into download mode three different ways. The first and easiest way is to download and install the Android SDK from http://developer.android.com
After you install it, run 'android' and install the platform-tools.
You should now have a command called 'adb', which has sub commands like: logcat, shell, and reboot. reboot also has options to say to reboot to what. Like
Code:
adb reboot
to just reboot the phone,
Code:
adb reboot recovery
to reboot into recovery, and
Code:
adb reboot download
to reboot into download mode.
The second way is to hold down the volume+ and volume- buttons on the left side of the phone while plugging in your usb cable attached to your computer. After you see the Download Mode screen, let go of the volume buttons.
The third way is a last resort. Use a usb jig.
If you can get into download mode, then you are NOT bricked.
I've also made a Heimdall One-Click that will get you 2.3.6 with ClockWorkMod(aka CWM. This is the SMS KJ6 One-Click on that page) and root. You can also flash the KJ1, which also has cwm and the same KJ6 Stock Rom and root. And last there is the Fully Stock One-Click which will leave you totally stock, and unrooted.
After you have a kernel with CWM installed, you can flash any rom in the dev forum, if it looks like the users of the thread are happy using it. Otherwise, stay away from it, until people say it is safe.
Do not use Rom Manager. It does not work, yet. Hopefully I will fix that very soon.
Anyways. I'm sure others will chime in, but that will get you started... if you want to void your warrenty.

You can use the latest SuperOneClick or you can flash a ROM/kernel that comes rooted. The latter of which can be found in the dev section. If you go that route, I highly recommend using one of bhundven's one-clicks to install 2.3.6 with CWM/root/voodoo lagfix. From there you can install a different custom ROM/kernel if you wish.
Or you can click on the first link in my signature and follow the guide.

which superoneclick? the thread said something about modifying it, do you just download it and run or do i have to change something from the x10 options
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21954884
Look for rooting in this guide.
I also am trying to figure out how to root it. Most guides point to superoneclick, so I downloaded it, although on the shortfuse site there are plenty of complaints saying it is freezing at step 7. I read the guide and it says that since I'm already GB, I can install a rom/kernal combo that will root it in the process. I am wanting to run Valhall black and it doesn't say that a root is necessary in the directions, it just says place the .zip in the root of the SD folder.
Then I read in other places that superoneclick isn't necessary with stock GB, and point to Odin, and then some say Odin isn't necessary and point to "an easier way for stock GB" but then don't say what the easier way is.
The wiki says that one of the ways to root is to install a CWM voodoo lagfix kernel (which is included in Valhalla Black, I think) without needing to root.
Mindboggling
Follow the guide in the first link in my signature. It is very specific! If you have any questions let us know.
Root is necessary. You need to root, then follow the directions regarding SGS Kernel Flasher, then flash Valhalla Black. If you follow the guide you will be good. I tell you the version of SuperOneClick to use. It works. Don't worry about what ever else you read.
Thanks, so far so good. Kernel in progress.
This is for Lumin30
I clicked on your link and followed everything to the T but when it gets to step #7 on the oneclick, it sits an sits (which we wait and wait) but then the oneclick after about 15 minutes of waiting says not responding. Any help on that?
The link I posted? If so, close SuperOneClick and try it again. Make sure you have USB Debugging enabled. Let me know if you have any more problems.
Also, when you plug your phone is does your computer recognize the phone?
That would be the problem. When I plug my phone into the computer it doesnt read it when in debug mode, but if it isnt in debug mode I can as storage.

Open SuperOneClick - assuming you downloaded the version I recommended in the guide.
First thing to try is using a USB port you have not plugged your phone into yet that is directly attached to your computer - meaning no hubs or addon usb boards.
Try that. Let the computer install the drivers. It should say they installed and click Root.
Also - verify what you currently have on your phone before proceeding.
Lastly - you will need to refresh your browser to see my replies
That did it. Thank you so much. But now one last question. How do i find the IMEI to make sure it changed? It said rooted but everythings on my phones looks pretty much the same as it did before I rooted it. An also when it was rooting it said LOG: write failed (errno=14) alot. Does that matter?

Read this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21953587&postcount=1
It will tell you how to find your IMEI and how to back up your EFS folder - which is VERY important. And you can go to Market, download 'Root Checker Basic' to verify you are rooted.
And hit thanks

OH HELL - YOU DO NOT WANT YOUR IMEI TO CHANGE. READ THE GUIDE!
I missed that part of your post!
Thanks for the help. I do have another question. If I want to change ROM's do I just flash them the same way or do I need to do something else first before I flash it? An by the way, the IMEI was still the same. I thought it was suppose to cahnge. Sorry this is my first time ever doing this.

I just flashed a rom and now my phone is stuck omn the start up sceen and has been like that for 10 minutes now and doesnt do anything. It is stuck on the samsung Galaxy s screen. OMG
Uh oh. What were you on and what did you try to flash thag got you stuck?
Bionix_Frost_SGS4G
An used the sgs thing to flash
So you were on Bionic Frost? Or tried to flash Bionic Frost? I need to know what you were first on - then what ROM you tried to flash.
Tried to flash
Hehe. Ok. So you tried to flash Bionic Frost - a Froyo based ROM. And what were ROM were you using before you tried to flash Bionic Frost?
Sherbear
You are making me laugh. We will get this fixed. But I need to know what ROM you originally used. Or that can be said - what is the first ROM you flashed? I am assuming it was a GB based ROM but I was to confirm first before we proceed.
Hey guys,
My infuse was bricked so I took it to the shop and got a new replacement device.
It was on 2.2.1 so as I got home I did the OTA update to 2.2.1 (but newer version) and updated it officially via kies mini to 2.3.6 UCLB3.
I have no idea how to root this guy and put Red CWM in it to start using CM9.
I have looked through the "how to root" threads..
I have never used heimdall and I tried once and did not understand how to use it unfortunately..
I only know how to use Odin..
is there a kernel that I can flash that gives root + Red CWM (in Odin) that is required for the CM9?
I saw one poster who said who will upload a Odin flashable root package for 2.3.6 but havn't seen it yet.
Thanks in advance

I just got in and am working now on getting some kinks out of an Odin tar.md5 to make it a little easier to get to a plain stock UCLB3 with root. That has a stock kernel and no CWM recovery, though. That being said, if your goal is to get to CM9, this isn't really what you want. I'm making that more to just have an easy and fast way to get to a rooted, stock UCLB3.
To get red CWM recovery, just flash a custom kernel like Entropy's Daily Driver using Heimdall. Reboot to recovery after flashing this, as that is where you will do the work to install CM9.
Good luck!

Look man,
i've been in the custom ROM business for a while now..(i9100, i777, and the infuse 4g)
i know how to read and search the thread.
clearly I was not successful in satisfying my inquiry.
I've read in this thread (From what my search results tell me) that the rooting of 2.3.6 official update requires the flashing of the proper kernel using HEIMDALL. (As opposed to oneclick methods that i used when i rooted the infuse 4g before i got my replacement today).
So my question is this. Entropy (btw, thanks for all your contributions related to CM9 on i9100, i777, as I have CM9 running on both of my devices) in his CM9 thread for infuse explicitly says i need to be flashing in RED CWM. so how do i get red CWM onto my device?=where can i go to learn more about heimdall flashing? All of the heimdall related threads say that it's super easy but it's not really intuitive to me! Youtube videos don't make sense..T_T
please direct me to a place where i can learn how to properly flash things using heimdall, as i am only familiar with ODIN.

Quick way to get to the Windows command prompt. Press the Windows key (key with the Windows logo) + the "R" key. When the run prompt pops up, type in cmd and then press Enter. But, yes, that is the command prompt.

Wish you would stop accusing me of not reading when i did read... lol
anyways
to sum up clearly what my situation is:
I found every "tool" that i need,
i just needed a very clear instruction as to how to utilize those tools, specifically the program "Heimdall".
I did download that UCLB heimdall package a while ago and had a look at the things and did not even know where to begin.
For example,
when i unzip the .jar filed named Stock_SGH_1997_UCLB3_Repartition-One-Click", i get a bunch of folders that seem meaningless to me. I don't know where to begin...
and for heimdall version, does it matter which one i use?
the folder named "com" has interesting things inside it, and i have a feeling that i need to do something in that folder but I don't know what. =(
I'm very frustrated because for i9100 and i777 i never had to do any of this.. just flash a custom insecure kernel via ODIN to get root+CWM and then flash CM9 away..

Did you go to the Heimdall link in the steps that I pointed you to, and that you said that you would read in more detail? Because, if you did, you would see that the stuff you just posted about Heimdall one-click isn't even remotely related to what you want to do.
Heimdall one-click packages are based on Heimdall, but aren't what you need to use. Go to the Heimdall link in the steps that I pointed you to, scroll to the bottom of the page, and download the one for your operating system (Windows, right?). Unzip the package, and read the README.txt file. Do everything it says. Then follow the steps that I posted.

you see i've already tried...
when i click "browse" and click the .jar file, it gives me error saying
"Tar header contained an invalid file size"....
Edit: attached pictures of what's happening when i browse and enter the file.
I tried to do it one more time and i saw it decompressing , as the readme says, but then it gives me that error sign again..
Oh okay, so you are using Heimdall, but are trying to flash something in the frontend. What file are you trying to flash? To do what you want to accomplish you have to download Entropy's Daily Driver, extract the package, drill down into the folders and flash the zImage file. Sounds like you're still just trying things, when all you really have to do is this, like in those steps I'm still directing you to read.:
heimdall flash --kernel zImage
and then you have red CWM. I'm out, I've got an Odin flashable tar.md5 to finish up.

Okay,
I guess i'll give it a try...
thanks for putting up with me and trying to help!
ok, here goes. i saw a video on youtube
(i'm a new member, so i'm replacing this link. the video is "Root & Install Ice Cream Sandwich On The Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant No Computer Needed" by eddie1west)
it seemed so easy, right? i'm looking for the most stable Tmobile Vibrant ICS. Before i do that, now i have to un-junk my phone. i tried to follow that guy's instructions to put the new OS on my vibrant, but i messed something up along the way. Then i realized when he shows his phone's files, they have a different name and/or version than the links he provides. that may have had something to do with it, but it could also be that he started from stock in january, and i started from gingerbread in july....
well i put some update.zip file in the root (but was never shown when or if it needs removed), then finally got the phone rooted (but when i held all 3 buttons i never got the BLUE menu like he did. mine was RED until i applied his update.zip and then it was only GREEN until i rebooted. it always starts at RED), then installed his gingerbread over mine, then tried to load his link to ICSv13 (even though the one he used was v10), but all i got was a never ending boot. i thought maybe i needed to start from where he did, so i watched his other video (LINK REPLACED: "How To Go Back To Stock Eclair On Your Samsung Galaxy S With Odin 1.3" by eddie1west) and tried to start all over (but his download links didn't work and i had to find all the files singly). So, using odin v1.85 (but he used v1.3), i only ended up getting froyo (not eclair) and NO google apps icon....! Sigh
then it seemed like every link i clicked to try to fix my issues just brought me to this website. so i'm thinking you all must know your shhhhhhhtuff! i've read through so many forum pages like the "enable a lagfix"/"disable a lagfix" pages, the "flash with 2 files"/"flash with 3 and check a box" pages, sometimes Odin has PDA as the second button and sometimes it's third, some that say to flash without that update.zip file (so delete, flash, then put it there? then leave it?). and to top it all off, most answers take me to an older page (and program or file versions have changed or have updates since then....all newer stuff still compatible with each other?) AND a lot of the links i've clicked on are broken and i have to hope the file i find is the same as the instruction writer intended. (i guess if a file size was indicated, i could compare them kb for kb...)
about an hour ago, i was going to reflash some OS that kind of worked, then try to disable those 2 voodoo commands some page said to enable, then take the update.zip out, then try everything all over again when i got the message "CONVERT PARTITION, SYSTEM NOT AVAILABLE, CONVERT PARTITION, SYSTEM NOT AVAILABLE"!
THEN i thought.....HANG ON! JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE A P3N1S DOESN'T MEAN THERE ARE LAWS AGAINST STOPPING AND ASKING FOR DIRECTIONS!!!! LOL!
So I stopped messing with the phone. From where i am right now, how do i get to a stable version of ICS? Will someone please give me a step-by-step list on what to do now? And can the list include file links that aren't broken (or a single zip file with everything in it would be like hitting the lottery!) and things i can look for to know i'm on the right track at the 1/3 mark and 2/3 mark possibly?
and could i please get a little forgiveness for being so long-winded when i get frustrated? and a tissue? and something to hit? (well..while i'm begging...can i get a large stuffed-crust meat-lover's and some diet dew too?) i may have found the reason that so many people use drugs! lol!
FYI, i'm on T-mobile using a T959V
FOLLOW UP-----
I moved this question here because I was just informed that the Vibrant is NOT the name of the Galaxy S 4G!
So what ur saying is the update.zip works on the t959v? And gives you root......I had a good feeling it would.
But anyhow you should go to the dev tab here in this forum and dl gremlin remover (one click)! and use that to get u back to stock.
We do not have a stable ics.
We are just now getting cm9 ics but you've got to understand its not perfect yet.....stick with gb for awhile and learn how this phone functions.
And don't worry...like the vibrant .....this phone is in my findings.....unbrickable

That is quite correct. They are different animals. If the gremlin remover doesn't help or get you where you need to go, I'd suggest using The T959V Heimdall One-Click Collection. Following the instructions there will get you back to a booting, stock Gingerbread ROM. From there you can go find ROM/ROMS of your liking (we have great developers) and give it/them a go.
Let us know if you need help.
well i meant the MOST stable Android 4 (aka cm9? ice cream)... or, for that matter, Android 3 (aka cm8? french silk pie? twinkie? zinger? lol! yum.....) would work too...
ok, i'll go find that program this afternoon/evening and fix the phone. (i just have to remember not to get that prog wet or feed it after midnight....)
now that i feel like an accidental guinea pig because i found you an answer you didn't know, then do you want me to test the compatibility of anything else out on it before i fix it? post your working links and i'll report back.
also, thanks for the gremlin help.
@stephen_w
is there an Odin one-click zip dealy thingy (and yes, that IS the technical term )
Lol I'm good I use to have the vibrant and just had a feeling this phone could have been rooted without hooking up to a comp.
Gremlin remover is an an Odin one click in itself.

Aokp and Cm9 are pretty stable just a couple bugs but not a big deal haven't tried miui v4 out yet. Good luck lol
Sent from my GT-P7510 using XDA
So how did it go?
I'm running cm9 btw....its very stable been running it now for 2days now and they got ringer working so really the only bug is front camera and I don't use it so for me I'm good
Alright, so I need a little help here deciding what to do next.
My girlfriend has the SGH-T959v with android 2.2.1 on it.
It had been randomly shutting down when the screen turned off. It was much the same as the Samsung Captivate had its issues.
It also wouldn't charge sometimes and would also not turn on unless the battery was removed.
Well, I replaced the battery with an OEM one from a mobile store.
Now there are no more random shutdowns but there's a whole slew of different issues.
If the phone is turned off you have to remove the battery, put it back in, plug it in quickly, and then turn it on.
If the phone charges too long all the signal stops working until a reboot.
The phone always thinks it's charging even when the battery is draining.
It's a pretty irritating problem especially with the reboot issue because if we're out and away from electricity and it gets turned off accidentally then there's nothing we can do till we get back to the charger.
Has anyone had these issues and solved them with a new ROM?
I had the random shutdowns on my Captivate and solved it with CyanogenMod. I'm thinking about flashing but I don't want to wipe it all and then have it not work or brick the thing (it is unlocked on Straight Talk so I also don't want to relock it to T-Mobile)
Some foresight would be appreciated before I move forward with it.
Thanks
Why don't you try a ROM and find out if it does anything? Questions like this are pointless because you can answer them yourself by just trying it.
Yes, flashing a better ROM will help in certain cases

Actually my question was whether or not anyone has had this issue.
I'm trying to see if it's a known firmware problem or a known hardware problem so I don't waste my time.
I don't have all day everyday to backup the phone and flash and test and then reinstall all the apps.
Thanks for the contribution though.
That being said would anyone suggest a TW ROM for this? I don't want to change the functionality because she's used to TouchWiz and not tech savvy
Now I must throw in, you should search around for a TW styled ROM. I don't know if we have one or not, but I can tell you that looking yourself will be a lot quicker then waiting for somebody to feel sorry for you, search for it, and give you a link to it.
Ignore those guys. Dont flash a custom rom YET.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1822626
Read that post follow the directions. I suggest reading the thread it links to while backing up the phone. Then while actually doing the flashing with heimdal follow it.
Now be sure to follow eollies directions of flashing the kernel after the initial boot or wifi will be broken.
This will wipe her phone out and reflash everything plus give you root access to remove bloat and add things like titanium backup.

Whoops looks like eollies pulled the file from dropbox.
Just follow the directions in the thread by lumin30 that eollie links too.
I forgot to say why I suggest using a one click. This device sometimes just needs to be reset to factory. And Using a one click will remove all stuff not suppose to be hanging around.
Here's another one that I find much more simple.
Heimdall One Click back to Stock for the T959V
I have the grimlin remover one click on my computer I can upload it later

I have it also, but cant get it to upload for whatever reason. So.....
Here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1500427 Post #41 has a working DL. get it, unzip, run it. Maybe it helps him.
Use the heimdall one clicks they are 2.3.3 stock touchwiz. Like I said follow lumin30's guide to the letter. He is a recognized contributor for a damn good reason. That guide has also been featured on the portal. I would flash the antonx kernel after for root and then flash bhundvens latest kernel. This will allow just a bit more control and troubleshooting if something happens.
Alright, I was just throwing it out there xD
Really guys? You're not even answering his question and linking him to old guides that are complicated. If someone needs to go to a stock KJ6 rom just link them to lumin's guide!
Anyway, I doubt you will find anyone on these forums who are still running the 2.2.1 stock rom, I personally haven't run it in over 2 years when I first bought my phone.
Samsung has released an official update from Froyo (what her phone is running) to Gingerbread (the last officially released version for this phone).
I recommend you try that, but know that there is a long-sms bug. If you go over 140 characters the message will get cut off and you will get a "message sending failed" notice when you try to send it. You can instead try to use a 3rd party app like handcent or gosms that will split the message for you if it goes beyond 140 characters.
If you would like an easy to follow, reliable guide WITH PICTURES, then go ahead and follow lumins' guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21953878&postcount=2
Just remember that everything on her phone will get wiped, but you can use google to back up contacts. It sounds like it'll be worth it.
Again, lumin's guide will allow you to upgrade her phone to the last official rom Samsung released for our phone.
Good luck!
I wonder if Samsung kies is still upgrading.
