Alright, so I need a little help here deciding what to do next.
My girlfriend has the SGH-T959v with android 2.2.1 on it.
It had been randomly shutting down when the screen turned off. It was much the same as the Samsung Captivate had its issues.
It also wouldn't charge sometimes and would also not turn on unless the battery was removed.
Well, I replaced the battery with an OEM one from a mobile store.
Now there are no more random shutdowns but there's a whole slew of different issues.
If the phone is turned off you have to remove the battery, put it back in, plug it in quickly, and then turn it on.
If the phone charges too long all the signal stops working until a reboot.
The phone always thinks it's charging even when the battery is draining.
It's a pretty irritating problem especially with the reboot issue because if we're out and away from electricity and it gets turned off accidentally then there's nothing we can do till we get back to the charger.
Has anyone had these issues and solved them with a new ROM?
I had the random shutdowns on my Captivate and solved it with CyanogenMod. I'm thinking about flashing but I don't want to wipe it all and then have it not work or brick the thing (it is unlocked on Straight Talk so I also don't want to relock it to T-Mobile)
Some foresight would be appreciated before I move forward with it.
Thanks
Why don't you try a ROM and find out if it does anything? Questions like this are pointless because you can answer them yourself by just trying it.
Yes, flashing a better ROM will help in certain cases

Actually my question was whether or not anyone has had this issue.
I'm trying to see if it's a known firmware problem or a known hardware problem so I don't waste my time.
I don't have all day everyday to backup the phone and flash and test and then reinstall all the apps.
Thanks for the contribution though.
That being said would anyone suggest a TW ROM for this? I don't want to change the functionality because she's used to TouchWiz and not tech savvy
Now I must throw in, you should search around for a TW styled ROM. I don't know if we have one or not, but I can tell you that looking yourself will be a lot quicker then waiting for somebody to feel sorry for you, search for it, and give you a link to it.
Ignore those guys. Dont flash a custom rom YET.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1822626
Read that post follow the directions. I suggest reading the thread it links to while backing up the phone. Then while actually doing the flashing with heimdal follow it.
Now be sure to follow eollies directions of flashing the kernel after the initial boot or wifi will be broken.
This will wipe her phone out and reflash everything plus give you root access to remove bloat and add things like titanium backup.
---------- Post added at 07:49 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:37 PM ----------
Whoops looks like eollies pulled the file from dropbox.
Just follow the directions in the thread by lumin30 that eollie links too.
I forgot to say why I suggest using a one click. This device sometimes just needs to be reset to factory. And Using a one click will remove all stuff not suppose to be hanging around.
Here's another one that I find much more simple.
Heimdall One Click back to Stock for the T959V
I have the grimlin remover one click on my computer I can upload it later

I have it also, but cant get it to upload for whatever reason. So.....
Here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1500427 Post #41 has a working DL. get it, unzip, run it. Maybe it helps him.
Use the heimdall one clicks they are 2.3.3 stock touchwiz. Like I said follow lumin30's guide to the letter. He is a recognized contributor for a damn good reason. That guide has also been featured on the portal. I would flash the antonx kernel after for root and then flash bhundvens latest kernel. This will allow just a bit more control and troubleshooting if something happens.
Alright, I was just throwing it out there xD
Really guys? You're not even answering his question and linking him to old guides that are complicated. If someone needs to go to a stock KJ6 rom just link them to lumin's guide!
Anyway, I doubt you will find anyone on these forums who are still running the 2.2.1 stock rom, I personally haven't run it in over 2 years when I first bought my phone.
Samsung has released an official update from Froyo (what her phone is running) to Gingerbread (the last officially released version for this phone).
I recommend you try that, but know that there is a long-sms bug. If you go over 140 characters the message will get cut off and you will get a "message sending failed" notice when you try to send it. You can instead try to use a 3rd party app like handcent or gosms that will split the message for you if it goes beyond 140 characters.
If you would like an easy to follow, reliable guide WITH PICTURES, then go ahead and follow lumins' guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21953878&postcount=2
Just remember that everything on her phone will get wiped, but you can use google to back up contacts. It sounds like it'll be worth it.
Again, lumin's guide will allow you to upgrade her phone to the last official rom Samsung released for our phone.
Good luck!
I wonder if Samsung kies is still upgrading.

Hey guys, THIS IS URGENT!
Ok, here's my problem. Over the past week i have been forced to reinstall my ROM/ROM'S several times. My Infuse will at times shut itself down and i will have to restart my phone. after i restart my phone i notice that all of the apps that i have on the phone that i have gotten from the marketplace will be grayed out and really not on my phone at all. this is getting really frustrating and if i had the money i would be visiting my AT&T store to get a windows phone. I love android and want to stay with it but i am getting pissed.
Do I need to ODIN back to stock or what? The phone will run for about a day and then it will just do what i described above. If I have to ODIN to stock then could someone please tell me how to do it because i have not had to deal with that yet. I would like to be running Zeus on my phone but that is when this whole ordeal started.
If someone could please help me with this i would greatly appreciate it. I really hope that someone has had this same problem. Any help would be awesome!
Thanks,
Bassman

I have notice that crash mostly on zeus. sometimes it is triggered by tibu backups or different launcher or different setting of TW launcher with special animations etc.
This effect probably carried over from flashing other roms over zeus without proper factory reset or wipes.
go to my post on the q/a rom; use jordan's method of flashing the rom you want.

i looked at the post that you gave me. is the method done by ODIN or heimdall? i am getting ready to bootcamp my mac so that i can try his method. after i do that method will i be able to run zeus again?

his method is with odin.
(if you are familiar with heimdall, you can take the package apart and use heimdall).
on the last part, flash Zeus ROM
OK, I will give that a shot. Correct me if I am wrong but I have been reading about ODIN and a lot of the stuff that I have seen says that it is not safe for your phone. Is that the case? i would rather just take it back to stock and leave it there if i have a high risk of bricking my phone. Also I would like to thank you for helping me with this issue.

you're welcome.
SOFT bricking the infuse is pretty common. Easy to restore. According to Adam Outler, a bad bootloader flash is possible to HARD brick it.
I think if you're interested in using ROMs other than stock (what comes with the phone), learning how to use odin or heimdall is a must.
These tools will be need to restore your phone to it's original state.
There are some risks, but if used correcly, most are minimal.
I would venture to guess the devs and flashaholics odin their device more times than you can imagine.
It's a matter of comfort level.
In reality, I think the stock froyo or one of the GB leak stock is just fine.
I had a "funny post" in the q/a section you should read.
again thanks for all of your help. you definitely gave me a lot of insight and knowledge that i needed to know that i probably wouldn't have gotten anywhere else. i managed to get caty running. i tried to flash zeus and it bootlooped the samsung screen. so i just decided to go with caty. dlev just wasnt cutting it for me. you have been a huge help and i will definitely recommend this thread to other people who have had this problem.

If you did get caty running again,
Before you do a whole lot, boot into cwm recovery.
Factory reset. Then wipe cache. Then goto advance. Wipe dalvik. Fix permission. Then reboot.
This should give you a relative clean slate.
Caty is also a very nice infuse base ROM. You're not really missing out on much. Just enjoy the phone. Leave the frequent flash to the flashaholics.

I did do all of that and the ROM seems to be running flawlessly. Thanks for your help man.

we have pretty much everything except the stock recovery image. need someone to mod kernel for root so w can get stock recovery off an unmodified phone. I've tried but really don't know what I'm doing.

Hi Nanition:
As j3r3goss stated, Shabby needs someone to help out. We need an unrooted phone so that we can grab the original recovery that comes on the phone. If you have an unrooted exhilarate and can donate some time/effort, Shabby would be the best person to contact. You can reach him by going to http://webchat.irondust.net/?channels=hitsquad Just type in his name (Shabbypenguin) and if he's lurking he'll respond.
Shabby had someone volunteer, but he said it didn't work out (no details as to why or what happened).

stock tar
Here's what I used to get the stock OS back, minus recovery of course. The tar contains the system and boot and can be pushed via Odin. For some reason when I had the radio files in the tar it would fail in Odin so I found a script to update those via CWM. I'm not sure what all needs to be done but since mine was extremely messed up I pushed the system tar via Odin then booted into CWM Recovery flashed the radio.zip then performed factory reset x3, format cache x3, format dalvik cache x3 and fixed permissions. It took a bit but booted just and I have had no issues.
You will need to perform a touch key fw update after you boot recovery, but everything else appears to be fully functional. We still need to get some assistance in getting the boot.img rooted so that we can get a dump of the stock recovery.img.
Hope this helps.
Obviously these are to be used at your own risk.

I am about to start working on a custom System ROM for this phone. What Apps should be included, what apps should be removed (AT&T crapware of course - but what else)?
I want to make a basic one with just a few key apps, and a more advance one for the ultimate tweaker/hacker.
All suggestions (but please be polite) are welcome!
We also still don't have the original restore.img - so if you want to help w/ that, let me know, I may have an angle that we can get it with.

Right now the biggest things for me are bloat and launcher. Everything AT&T needs to go. Is there a way to seperate Google apps or do they pretty much install together? Ther are way to many Google apps that I don't use or ever care to use. Not a big fan of the TW so I'm using ADW, but that can be easily changed by the user. One thing I have been trying to find is support for volume rocker music controls. I use this thing for for music all the time and hate having to skip tracks from the screen.

I take absolutely no credit for this, I merely tried it and it does infact work for our phone as well. I was at 42 BTW.

I don't know if Shabby needs a phone or not. I personally, haven't heard from Shabby since a couple of weeks ago.
You can always go to his site and PM him and make the offer.
I was actually hoping my wife would buy one of these, and I was going to try to grab the stock restore, but she opted for a Galaxy S II SkyRocket instead (larger screen, more memory, thinner, etc. - but she did like that my phone is smaller (edge-to-edge)).
Anyway, we're pretty much stuck at the moment. We don't have the original restore, and we can't seem to get it.
I think I know what needs to be done, but I'd have to consult w/ Shabby and j3r3. If you're willing to try yourself, you need to get the rooted ROM, and get it installed on your phone. Then, as I understand it, you need to adb the phone and dd a restore.img. Once we have that, we can then install custom ROMs and revert back to stock if needed.
Other than that, we have full root, and I have been able to uninstall AT&T crapware, Samsung Crapware, and also most of the other system stuff that isn't needed/wanted.
The next step is, as I find time, to create a minimal ROM that has only what is necessary for the phone to function. There will be a couple of other apps (to verify root, and allow you access to all files and system settings), but other than that - that'll be it.
Let me know if you think you'd be willing to be a guinea pig on this - and you should let j3r3 and shabby know as well (if shabby is still interested).

GHORR: Here's the deal: As of right now, there is no way to unlock your phone for use with other carriers unless you can convince AT&T to send you the unlock code. To do that (I know this from experience), you'll need to be able to explain why you want it unlocked to them. Read this thread for more info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1812976
I know that doesn't help. However, you can also do a search for "SIM Unlock" - there are some phones that have had their system files hacked and you might be able to unlock it that way. Note, I am in no way responsible for anything that happens to your phone. This is at your own risk.
Good luck

Hi i did go to Xperia Developer thread but it said i can only ask questions in General forums.
So here i am i really need help, i rooted my Xperia Arc and almost nothing is working, i can't turn on the Wifi, mobil network works for a second then the phone shuts down mobil netorks, keypad, etc.
When i start my phone i get: unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stopped, when i try doing something else i get alot of "unfortunately" messages. please help.
I followed every instruction for rooting i have the 2.6.32.9- DooMKernel, almost all apps are gone and the superuser app have 0 apps in it.
Hi zobar,
There are General & Q&A forums for the Xperia Arc and you'll get users there with the same device, whereas this is a general forum for anything to do with any phone, regardless of make/model/os.
Do some reading in both the General & Q&A sections in this forum...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=962
If you can't find an answer then start a thread in the Q&A forum, as that's where all questions should be posted. The only place you can't currently post are development forums, but they're only for releasing development work anyway.
Hope you get your problem sorted
Try rebooting

Straightforward answer
Before a more experienced member rightfully closes this thread I will try to help you.
Download flashtool. A simple google search will sort that out.
Install it. The program will have a picture of a lightning bolt as its logo.
Find the stock firmware for your device. Search for that in google.
After downloading the firmware you should see it has a .ftf at the end.
Go into computer then flashtool then firmware. then drag and drop the .ftf into that folder.
Close the folder.
connect your arc.
Open the flashtool program.
Click the bolt icon in the top left.
select the name of the firmware you downloaded in the left panel. it will highlight blue.
Click ok (bottom right).
A box will appear telling you to put your device into flash mode. Follow the instructions it gives.
Once this is done the box will dissapear and firmware will flash.
Finally device will reboot and phone will be back to normal.
Hope it works for you. :good: Please thank me with the button if you appreciate my efforts. Please post in more appropriate places in future and someone will answer quicker. Sorry if this isn't what you wanted.

DO you have any good new karnels? or any guides please? i followed one and bricked it so maybe the guide i used was bad? :S
-
Did my unbrick guide work? SO your device is ok now? I hope so.
Here is a mini guide about phone terms. Sorry if you know this already.
Rooting is simply giving your phone administrators rights. No roms or anything. Once rooted you could install clockworkmod which would allow you to install a rom that would work on you STOCK kernel (the one that comes with xperia).
A kernel is a set of instructions to a phone. different kernels or custom kernels (not stock) enable you to flash some more advanced roms as not all roms will work on STOCK kernel.
Also, in most cases, different kernels allow overclock and undervolt. These things allow you to make your device run faster.
Unlocking your bootloader is required to install a custom kernel. Unlocking a bootloader can be difficult and if done wrong, can brick your device completely.(make it useless like a brick) This is why I did not do it until a few days ago - because I was scared.
If I was to recommend a rom, I would say cyanogenmod (cm for short). They focus on getting the galaxy nexus android - pure version.
You flash kernels with flashtool. But you MUST have an unlocked bootloader to do this.
If your device is fixed now i would say google cyanogen mod 9(ice cream sandwich) or 10 (jelly bean). CM10 is less stable (not everything works) than cm9. but cm10 is more fun. make sure you look at guides for your device and not any random one.
Sorry for the lecture. Thank if you found this useful. I appreciate it. Sorry if this isn't what you wanted.

if you do not understand anything or want to ask anything else please feel free. Also you can check out videos of roms for your device on youtube and choose one you like. then look for tutorials on xda or youtube.

Hi almost everything worked out in the end just one problem left, the mobile network after rooting it tunring on and off like its droping the signal and after min it regains it, its a constant loop with network off and on.
Try switching on airplane mode and then switching off. This will restart your phone's radio and may fix this. Otherwise I am not sure. Great to hear it all went well

Thanks everyone for being such undersanding community i finally managed to do everything i wanted, i installed Google play from Gapps: http://goo.im/gapps
Im loving the Cyanogenmod 9, its so cool
Just fyi I think he forgot to wipe data possibly, this can be the cause when the roms are 'half compatible'
Also, it wasn't bricked because it actually turned on

I have found a root method now.
you use Poot-debug.apk and Ministro II.apk
This may not be a traditional Q&A format, but I really wanted to make sure that the plan I have in mind is going to work out for me.
Hi! I'm a noob. I want to flash my first ROM ever after having gotten frustrated beyond belief with how often my Infuse crashes (every few hours I get the triple vibrate to crash). I've already rooted the Infuse and installed CWM though it seems that it was pointless for me to do both of these things as the steps I'm to follow seem to install the both of 'em.
Phone: Samsung Infuse
Carrier: AT&T
Current Firmware version: 2.2.1
Baseband version: I997UCKH1
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9
Build number: FROYO.UCKH1
ROM I want to install: Unofficial CM10
Steps I intend to take:
Back up with Titanium Backup (Free) - Done as according to ctkatz's thread.
I did not do a launcher backup, mostly because I don't know what it is and I don't believe I have one I'm interested in keeping. Also, I didn't use Rom Manager to make a nandroid backup since in the threads I've read the general consensus seems to be Rom Manager is REALLY AWESOME at bricking phones, but not so good for much else.. Rather, I booted into CWM and told it to make a backup. I'm under the impression this made a nandroid backup. If this didn't, please somebody let me know.
Install 2.3.6 Gingerbread via jscott30's thread and installing option D. And for some reason, this is the only step that requires me to use Odin. I'm not really sure why, if anybody wants to clear that up it'd be great!
Use Qksters EFS backup script to ensure that if I somehow mess things up, I can still save my phone! And to run this I just "flash" it like I would a ROM. Which is by selecting the install zip from sdcard option.
Follow Entropy's CM9 guide to go from GB to ICS And this is just because you can't jump from GB to JB? I'm assuming it's something along those lines. Either way, his guide seems straightforward enough. Also during this step, put the ROM, Overclock Kernel, and Gapp files for CM10 on my internal SD card.
Wipe in CWM
Flash the ROM in CWM
Flash Overclock Kernel in CWM because if I'm going through all this trouble to doctor my Android, I may as well give myself the ability to overclock it
Wipe Cache Partition in CWM I don't really know what this does, but I'm assuming it doesn't wipe anything I care about
Advanced/Wipe Dalvick Cache Same as the previous step. I don't know what it does, but I'm following instructions.
Reboot And I'm supposed to understand this first reboot will take like 5-10 minutes and I shouldn't run around my house crying that my phone broke when it takes a long time to reboot.
Wait 15 minutes and reboot a second time
Log into google account And this gets my contacts back
Restore user app data This gets my apps and my 3 starred all angry birds levels back?
CAREFULLY restore some system data that is green
And after that, I get to play around with my brand new shiny OS and enjoy my phone!
I apologize that this is not a very concise accumulation of questions, but there's not really a single guide that goes step by step through this ENTIRE process of going from Froyo to a customized jellybean OS while making sure you don't lose any app data. It's taken me about ~5 hours of reading through a number of topics and my brain is starting to feel fuzzy, so I really just wanted some of the more experienced members of the community to doublecheck my planning.
Thank you guys so much! Everybody in this community is just awesome for dumbing this process down for those of us who do not understanding the inner workings of a computer : ). I'm very appreciative!
You have pretty much the right idea.
There's a few pointer i would suggest. Back up your contacts to google. Save all your photos to your PC.
When you are making the move from 2.2.1 to 4.1.2 or 4.2, I would start it all new. I would not restore anything you had in froyo (2.2.1) to 4.1.2.
With that in mind, put your phone into download mode, flash jscott's gb with bootloaders.
Flash cm9 and then cm10 as instructed on their ops or andros's write up.
Also I noticed you have a step about flashing the OC kernel, but OC has now been integrated into the kernel that comes with the build.
And as qkster stated, avoid restoring data. If there is something essential you do not want to lose you may restore data for that specific app and in case you start having issues, you know what to blame.

Luckily, the guide I read on backing up suggested both of those things, so I've done those.
I'm underway! I managed to successfully install the option D from jscott, but I'm a little confused on how to flash the bootloaders. Do I need to put my phone back into download mode to use Odin again? I tried that, and Odin doesn't seem to want to recognize my phone.
And sadly, I can't skip out on the bootloaders as I'm sure you guessed. Upon trying to go to CM9 I failed miserably due to rainbows. I actually used your guide to get back to well, stock UCLB3, and from there I've been trying to get the bootloaders on by putting my phone in download mode.
With no luck, sadly. Odin just doesn't want to show my phone as connected. Kinda stuck at the moment!
EDIT: I re-read the guide of yours I followed and saw that all I had to do was flash the thing a second time with the install bootloaders box checked. Unfortunately, I've done that, and I can clearly read the words "Uploading SBL...SBL upload failed!" on my screen.
Doesn't take much of a genius to figure out that the BL likely stands for bootloaders, so now I'm slightly freaking out. Heimdall One-click is currently trying to end the session. I'm of course going to let it go as long as I can hoping that it ends things nicely as I'm terrified to try turning anything off at this point. Hopefully I didn't just permanently destroy my phone =\
Andros: Oh thank you for saving me from the OC mishap. I suppose there's some good in me not having gotten that far yet due to problems!
EDIT 2: I can see the light at the end of the tunnel! I swapped my USB ports around a bit and kept trying with your Heimdall One-click stuff and finally got the bootloaders in! Once that went through the rest was easy as pie : ) Everything's going smooth, I'm currently installing JB Gapp stuff, then I'm going to follow the rest of my ROM guide and I don't forsee any issues. Thank you guys again, both of your guides and your responses were very helpful!
I want to thank YOU arguro. If everybody had the patience and intelligence to so thoroughly research what they wanted to do there would be so many less help I bricked my phone threads and a whole lot less irritated developers.
You went into the process with the right amount desire / fear. Glad you made it and welcome to jellybean!

Did you install the adampk rom?

no I haven't...
so far , what I did is
root the pone with the one clicker (wich was a success)
did the recovery with the clockworkmod recovery thing,
restarted and exectued this website's tutorial to jellybean (start with WWW stuff.androidauthority.com/g2x-p999-t-mobile-cyanogenmod-10-cm10-unofficial-115536)
and then, look like it failed..
this morning, I managed to get back to the recovery boot screen and found that if I press the house icon it show up a menu.. but this menu giving me access to reboot, wipe cache, data or install update.zip (which was supposed to fix my problem) but this menu is blued out and unaccessible..
dunno if it helped..
right now, I am trying to get acces to my phone doing the no battery boot thing but my pc doesnt seem to recognize my phone + I am at work hehe so I am pretty much limited in acces due tu the it protection and firewall stuff
I am gonna try to redo that stuff tonight at home but meanwhile, if any of what I described may give you a clue on how to help me, I really appreciate the effort!
thanks again for the support guys, I know it can be a pain sometimes to help people screwing some beginner stuff like I probably do right now

I say you needed to use the g2x android development forums on this site to find a suitable jb rom, not this other site. The one click method isn't very stable, so nvflash is most definitely what you need to try to get working. There are very thorough tutorials on how to get that to work. Do you know which clockwork recovery version you have installed? Should be 5.0.2.0. Once you get home, I suggest you read read read. Do as much research you can to make sure you can follow nvflash instructions to the letter. I know I personally spent about a week researching to make sure I had a solid understanding of the procedure.
I recommend getting nvflash going to get clockwork properly installed, then download a rom from xda, nowhere else. I would even say use a gb rom before trying a jb ...the jb roms are hackfest versions, so they have (from my experience) much poorer battery life, and lack hardware acceleration. Netflix and many 3d games won't work. You can use adampk or mazout's roms but they don't have working radio, i.e. no phone/SMS functionality.

Boot into recovery, there should be an option to format or wipe system. Do that then flash the ROM. It won't boot if you flash it over stock.
Also, use the paranoid android rom found in the development section, same cyanogenmod base but works better.

Ok, wait I think I understand what you're saying now. If you can, pm the op of that thread you used to unbrick. Ask that person if you need some kind of different file in that .zip file to work on your carrier.
I remember having to use that guide to get back to stock. Glad to see you're making progress. I know it can be frustrating when devices get wacky. Good luck!
