[Q] Building a rom for the Transformer - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I've been playing around with building CM quite a bit lately. I've made more than a handful of apps. I've read tons of articles, including the ones in the infamous post that Cyanogen made. I'm just looking for answers to a couple questions. First of all, I understand how to build CM from source, but I don't know where to get the files for the transformer. I know you can get the kernel source from asus, but I'm wanting to modify the stock rom. Also, is there some sort of method similar to using the extract-files.sh script that cyanogenmod uses when setting up your environment? One last thing, once I get all of those and I make the modifications that I want, how do I build said rom? Do I have to write the make files myself?
I've searched all over the place for at least a month on and off now. If I'm just retarded, then flame away, but every time I ask somebody for help I'm just met with "You need to read more." If somebody could please just help me out a little here I would greatly appreciate it.

Mods can you delete this? I figured it out on my own...

Nnnoooooooooo!!! Share your information with us! I was considering trying a quick & dirty ICS build for the TF101, but didn't even know where to start. If you know all that stuff relevant to the TF101, please share! :-D

I'm buiding a ROM as well and searching for inforation as well...

Alright alright haha. I'm still getting things straightened out, but I'll tell you what I know so far. I've got alot of studying to do right now, but you can add me on google talk. [email protected]. I'll be posting tutorials on my website for various things including the ROM stuff that I learn once I get finished with finals. I'll post a link here when I get some tutorials up.
Just let me know who you are when you add me.

Cool, three months from now you'll probably have almost everyone that wants to make a ROM, trying to add you.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk

Well I am more than willing to help. I've had my struggles and there are very few people who seem to want to. Of course I would imagine that most of the people who are developers on here get bombarded with messages all the time. I'll probably end up posting some tutorials on my site eventually. Hopefully that will help.

New Android ROM website, for newcomers(idea)

Ok guys, this is just a proposal/idea. I have an idea to make a website, that people can easily find their phone, and then it will display all the ROM's available for their device. As well as show them the ROM's it should also be able to display images that would help people that aren't technically experienced to install and enjoy the ROM's that we do everyday, with ease. The only problem ( and of course people are wondering, why tell us just DO IT) is i have limited X-HTML experience and Javascript experience. I would need the help of all the great developers here to promote their ROM (giving helpful information), and someone(s) to help develop the website. Basically i want to be able to easily find a ROM instead of searching through pages and pages trying to see if and problems persist, and easily state what their ROM is all about. This could really be a break-through website, that can take the awesome geeky-ness of XDA and transfer all the knowledge to help everyone. I really do love XDA, but sometimes it is hard to keep up with all the new terms and lingo. It would also help to de-clutter XDA, leaving developers noob question free. I know i probably sound crazy i know. but if anyone is interested in helping please PM me, it would be greatly appreciated. and it would be the start of something new for ROM's, mainstreaming if you will.
Cheers
...And if this is posted in the wrong place i do apologize in advanced.

Calling all devs

Please only reply to this thread if you feel you have what it takes to cook, port, or fix a custom rom.
We all want rom's, and we all want to flash things it's why we signed up for this site and follow it so closely. Now, the atrix 2 community is short handed on devs so we need people who will step up to the plate and help with this. For now, all I need from you is a reply to this thread. So that you can get your name out there and be known by Jim and myself. I will help you along the way to building your roms. DO NOT be afraid to ask for help. The best place to ask for help is in a reply to a thread so that other members searching for info can find answers to the same question's. You may also PM me at anytime I will respond as quickly as I can and I WILL go out of my way to help. Jim is also a great help and much more fluent in the linux environment then myself. So come on peeps we have a great device here, its time to make it shine!
This OP will be updated from time to time so please check back here often, MOD please sticky this!

As stated I am here too, and I will also respond to PMs as well, and I am willing to put in what is needed to help anyone out with cooking, or Linux / Android OS questions.
Let the Development begin to flow!
Yes, I also vote to make this a sticky. To our MODs: Please?
I've talked with Jim about this as well and I will be trying to start on something next week but can't guarantee a timeframe since I will be starting this brand new. I will also be trying to port over a theme or two as well.
I CAN PROMISE LOTS OF QUESTIONS THOUGH!!

I would like to try my hand at making/porting a ROM, I have experience with Linux/Unix. Is there a resource for learning the ropes of making a ROM?
still waiting for my atrix, but count me in .. I'm quite familiar with linux but never develop any ROMs..
I'd like to try and help.
Hey guys, I just want to re-open this call for help.....
I know that both lfaber06 and I are swamped with day to day stuff as well as things in here, and we also have cogery helping out, and JRW28 has jumped in and done a couple of things as well.
Thanks cogeary and JRW 28 for all the help so far!
We really need some people to jump in and help with ROM development and porting, no experience needed, just the desire to give it a shot, and some time to spare and have fun with it.
I have been unable to work on any ROM building/porting in quite a while, since I am working on some very low level hacks, if you want to know something I am working on, it is the same thing kohlk and a few others are working on, for the razr and bionic. I am not ready to reveal anything yet, because I don't want Moto or AT&T to catch wind and block in the next release. I am getting closer to this, and it is something I have been working on in here since day one, so most of you know, with out me saying anything, what this is.... don't ask in this thread what it is, PM me instead if you must know.
If you want to and are able to help, with ROM building/porting, reply here, and send a PM to lfaber06 and I, and lets hopefully get some more stuff flowing.
Thanks!

I'm willing to be a part of developing for this phone. I do have to admit, while I'm a fair hand at linux, and have the Android SDK set up on both Ubuntu and Windows 7, I have never even begun to try my hand at Android development. I'm familiar with reading code syntax, though I can't actually code, and I know my way around both bash and the windows command line. I am however, gifted with the ability to learn very quickly, and have a lot of time on my hands at the moment, so if there's anyone that can help me along with android development, I'd love to be more of a contributor.
I'm still willing to help in any way I can.
Just pm me n let me know where to begin, I'm always willing

I'm willing and consider myself able. I'll do some reading and research over the weekend. I typically have three hours a night through the week free (est). If there is a starting point you think we should focus on outline it. We could start independently and go from there.

I have received everyones PMs, and I want to thank you.
I have not replied yet, because I have sent a PM to lfaber06 and we are figuring out which tasks we need filled right now with the projects we are working on. Once lfaber06 and I have figured it all out, I am hoping later this week, to have it all laid out in a PM to those that have PM'd me.

[Q] Galaxy s 4G ICS

Do you think we will ever have ICS on the galaxy s 4g? I mean we saw it on G1, and lots of unsupported phones, and on the galaxy s 1 which doesn't support ICS officially. What is the problem stopping the development ?

Threads like this.
Also, the other phones have like a billion and one kernel devs. Not to mention our phone is Sammy's black sheep, by that I mean this phone is way different from other sgs.
Lastly, we have at least 3 other ICS threads why not ask there?

Why does everybody get annoyed when a regular person just wants to know whats wrong out of curiosity? I don't want any ROM or anything I just wanted a technical answer. is the problem the source code being unreleased? will the company ever release it?
I wish I could help, I would really love to. Its like a dream or long term goal to be a dev, study programming languages etc... but that requires lots of time and I'm just waiting a bit as i'm not sure where to start.
I am sorry for any misunderstanding as I know Devs already have rough days and nights with developing and improving. I wasn't "Demanding" or "pushing" as i'm not that person. I am just seeking knowledge, and if the Q&A section isn't the right place to search for Knowledge then I don't know where is.
The problem isn't with you so much as it is with the million dollar question that's been asked and answered a million times....its the question all devs cringe over when they see it repeated time n time again.
Put yourself in their shoes for a minute.....they put out as much as they can with what they can and people keep popping up this same question like they just aren't happy with what they are getting
To answer your question, and anybody else that wants to ask,
It is being worked on. We cannot get ICS to boot due to coding and kernel issues. I semi successfully ported an ICS ROM, but due to all the mods and changes, it felt empty. So we went back to the drawing board and started over. Since we don't have source code, it makes things much more difficult. Be patient. And for the record, the first place to search for knowledge is Google. Fb is right though. We do need more help. The more people we have working on this, the better our chances are. Learn how to compile kernel and ROM from source. Learn scripting. And learn how to Google...

I do understand what you mean, and I already put myself in the dev's shoes and I really admire their work, all of it. But I went through all the threads regarding ICS, and sadly their aim is to push , demand and request stuff from devs as if devs don't have enough on their minds already, and that is really annoying and disrespectful. But not all people are like that. I don't have any requests( I have a Nexus S with ICS, SGS 4g CM7.2) I am just seeking knowledge.
I am really grateful for what each and every DEV offers as it is from their personal and free time. Sorry for any misunderstanding

What Thomas posted is true but the main reason we dont have a working ICS port is this statement above.
The op makes a good point, this is the Q&A section. Even tho there are many threads asking this same question most of them have ended up in bashing with nerf bats or a mod locking because of insults. Ive read the other threads, but most people will stop reading when the conversation turns sour. You might actually read the other posts but your mind shuts it down. So a informative post will slip in and you wont catch it.
The biggest problem with threads that ask this question is assumptions. When people stop assuming and start to understand the person asking the question things get resolved.

I think that since we have begun posting builds for everyone out there to try and hopefully gain progression, it is time for the disclaimer:
This is, quite obviously, not only a work-in-progress, but being accomplished by novice developers. We aspire to greatness but are still in our infancy. Having said that, no one will knowingly post anything they do not think will be successful, and as of now, no untested builds will be posted on the front page. Nevertheless, no one is responsible if you lose your files, brick your device, or inadvertently cause a nuclear war. If you are seeking absolute perfection, RUN NOW WHILE YOU STILL CAN!! However, if you are all about the learning process as we are, stick around and see what 'develops'!

*A fellow journeyman of the development process has begun a blog with useful tips on learning Breakfast, Brunch, and Lunch, among other things. He goes by the name synrgi, and a link to his blog is here:
http://blog.cameronpickett.com/2011/09/16/breakfast-brunch-and-lunch/
It has been suggested that we learn the ins and outs of Github and utilizing our own repository. I have one ready to use and it can be found here:
https://github.com/BMP7777/project-rookie-4.1.1
It makes sense that we keep our little project 'in house' until we are ready for the big leagues; Also, it will help us all have a place to gather new, workable files and share among ourselves. (thanks to new ion?)
INSTRUCTIONS, TIPS, and TRICKS:
Many of us rookies have been having trouble getting ourselves 'up and running' with our environment, myself maybe the most. In an effort to save new rookies some headaches, I will say that the general consensus for a successful environment the first time out is to follow steps #1 through #5 on the 'Compile JB on Ubuntu' tutorial. From there, following the steps listed in sk8rs 'Cyanogenmod 10 Alpha' is said to be the way to go. After many failed attempts, I have followed these steps and performed a successful (bootable and functional) build. It can be smooth sailing for some, and for others(like me), it can be like having a root canal. But, KEEP TRYING! Follow the steps, practice, be prepared for any number of issues, and research any time you have a problem or question. Questions posted here will be answered; we are all one big happy family. But, if your question is silly, i.e. something you should have taken the time to explore before asking, don't get your feelings hurt when you receive some ribbing and ridicule along with an answer. It happens to me all the time. LOOK IT UP. It will eventually work out and you will be successful!
Rule #1 is RESEARCH
Rule #2 is RESEARCH(Remember FIGHT CLUB?)
Rule #3 is PATIENCE
Rule #4 is DON"T GIVE UP
Any question, no matter how 'noobie', is welcome here. But, I think everyone would agree that the fastest way to learn is to research AND ask for help. All the above topics are here to assist in the learning process, but some of the 'HOW TOs' can also be slightly contradictory in terms of steps if you are new to the process. A good example is the above listing of steps pulled from the one tutorial and the other. The reason behind this is simple: the entire AOSP(Compile JB on Ubuntu) tutorial is meant to get you started if you want to compile and build from the whole android base. Sk8rs thread is designed with building ONLY Cyanogenmod 10 in mind. Sk8rs thread was posted for those already familiar to the process, so us rookies need to start from ground zero. The best advice from one rookie to another is to study, practice, THEN ASK. CHECK THE POSTS, THREADS, AND STICKIES. For those new to XDA, you can look up specific questions you have by typing them in the top right box. If they have been asked, you will get a hit. No one minds helping, and we all need it here, but pretty soon the questions will begin to get redundant like in every other thread. Like with everything else, LOOK IT UP.
Also, it was rightfully pointed out to me that we need to be STUDYING THE CODE. LEARN THE COMMANDS. NONE OF US WILL GET ANYWHERE IF WE JUST COPY AND PASTE. THE WAY TO LEARN IS STUDY!!!
Here is a very useful post by cyanogen, as found by new ion?; everyone should look at the advice offered here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=667298
As with everything else, these instructions are a WIP. More to be posted as I learn...
Some of the more experienced Devs have taken in interest in this thread, and have offered to make themselves available for the OCCASIONAL question. Please guys, let's not badger them to death! Google is our friend!

Just a little question... Did you contact CM10 developpers on the Transformer Prime thread? They probably can be helpfull, as the codebase is pretty similar with Tegra2/Tegra3? Makelegs, Craigacgomez have CM10 running on their TF201 and Loganmc10 on the TF300.

I have tried contacting logan with no response back, but here's the deal. I am going into surgery on Thursday, and will be knocked out for a while. If I can't get this thing stable, il either post what I have for the community to work on, or give it to a private dev for a joint rom. Dunno yet Wel see how today goes

Long painful 2 or 3 weeks listen to your doctors
take your meds. stay away from children and sick people.
wear your mask when outside and everywhere else you go:good:
Good luck, ftmaniac948, remember there's a lot more to do with the development after you get back!

[Q] New guy - is XDA for me?

Hey guys!
Did some some searching around on this site and couldn't even find a mention of my device. I just recently bought a Huawei Y210C android phone. It is a Chinese manufacturer, which might explain the sparsity of information in English about it.
Anyway, about me, I do some programming in Java, and I want to eventually be making android apps. I also want to root my huawei, try some different ROMs on it and stuff. Now, as far as android development goes, I'm a pure beginner. Does it matter that there aren't people talking specifically about my phone, or can I snag some 'how to root' guides from other devices and ROMs, etc., and use them effectively, or would I have to figure out how to root it on my own?
Essentially, what I am asking is: given that there is no sub-forum for my device, and that I'm a dev noob, will I find useful stuff around here?
cheers
For anyone, and everyone , unless your gonna hack XDA, or blow the servers up then NO! otherwise yes, and you are very welcome if you ask me . Always nice seeing another XDA member. You may or may not know shiz about flashing a ROM, or kernel, or unlocking bootloaders, etc, etc, but that's why there are tutorials to get people started
Everything you needed to get started should be here , welcome to XDA

As far as your phone. You can for sure utilize XDA, I just did a search and there's not really much of anything for your phone, but you can for sure still post stuff you make for it on here . I'm pretty sure you could utilize the 'Android Developing and Hacking' or 'Legacy&Low Activity Devices' to post your work for that phone .

XDA is a great information resource for pretty much anything Android related. Being that you have a desire to develop apps I'm 99.9999% positive there is someone on XDA that'll help you out any way they can if you have any questions. In the end though only you can answer your own question. Joining XDA was one of the best choices I have made and now its inspired me to learn the Python language and then I'll tackle Java lol.
