[Q] Really Poor Graphics Quality - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've search before post this new thread.
I'm currently using Nexus S with [Oxygen ROM] + the latest Nov23rd [franco.kernel].
I've tried CyanogenMod7, NSCollab & Oxygen ROM and all of them has a bad
graphics quality. I mean when I set a gradient image to my home screen wallpaper,
the result show up is a poor quality gradient image like this :
{

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
FYI :
I'm using both JPEG & PNG image extension.
Either jpeg or png is generate the same result.
Am I the only one who experience this?
Is it normal for my Nexus S?
If it's not normal, then how to fix it? is there any drivers / kernels / scripts?
The big question is, why don't google pay some attention to the image quality?
Please help me to solve this problem.

You made me curious about this, so I searched for a gradient image and it looks fine. Are you sure it's not just the image quality? Try finding a HD image.

Are you sure it looks fine on your NS ?
I've try to made some gradient image from photoshop and
I made bigger resolution about 1000x X 1000x. And the result is the same.
I'm not sure whether it's about a lack of some kind of image drivers
or maybe the it's just about the image color problem....
Btw, are there some kind of driver fixing things in NS?

Mine looks nice. Its samoled so its going to have some dots.

Wow....nice man....
But mine is SCLCD. And I'm sure this is not related to a particular type of screen
technology. I was using Samsung Galaxy S I9003 which use SCLCD screen and
have no problem with the image quality. I was very smooth in I9003.
Now, how can I9023 has this problem? How to solve this? Please help me.

I guess you are using GO Launcher Ex. Try enabling the Preferences » Advanced Settings » High quality drawing option.
Note that it may reduce the overall performance of the launcher & app drawer though (slower transition, lagging, etc.)

Yes I do. But I've checked the option up.
The same result is shown on the Stock Launcher.
Is there another way to solve this?

Try a lower resolution. Try using the native wallpaper resolution for hdpi android phones.

Try setting the wallpaper from within the Browser instead of using Gallery. The gallery app has terrible colour depth.

May be you should post the image that you used as background so we can try it.

Use Crop wallpaper from the market to put the wallpaper

The image I used on Samsung Galaxy S I9003 (with SCLCD) has no such problem.
Seriously, Am I need any drivers for the phone?
I'm sorry for this stupid question. I'm just a noob who eager to learn

Your image resolution is strange. The typical wallpaper size for Nexus S should be 960×800 (width×height)
I guess the launcher tried to resize the image to match the appropriate size, that's why the gradient pattern got stretched.

Do you mean that the Go Launcher Ex is trying to resize the wallpaper?
I have tried this on Stock Laucher too and the result is the same.
Is this related to the ROM (oxygen) I'm using on?
or the kernel (franco) ?

OMG...!!!
I just flashed my Nexus S back to MIUI and.....
OH MY GODSSS...!!!
I'm not experience this issue on MIUI ROM 1.11.18.
This is the wallpaper I'm using on.
MIUI is a great ROM but I don't really like it because
of its heaviness. I prefer Oxygen ROM because it's light.
The image above is the same photoshop creation I made.
With the same image size but in different color.
Anybody can solve this problem ? Please help me.

plus try this resolution: 960x800
thats the native wallpaper size for the nexus s.
if you went over it will get compressed to that size which may cause unwanted effects. ie what youre having.

HTC LiveWallpaper Slidshow

This bug has appeared in every ICS ROM for the Sensation and I am actually surprise no one has reported it. This minute, subtle, annoying bug has driven me face first against a wall . Before I start explaining the problem here are some screenshots.

Left Image:
This is how the wallpaper SHOULD look like when using HTC LiveWallpaper Slideshow. As you can tell it is not magnified and zoomed in. This is how it looked like when using HTC LiveWallpaper Slideshow on Gingerbread.
Right Image:
The wallpaper is obviously magnified using HTC LiveWallpaper Slideshow. Every image is zoomed in and distorted affecting its quality.
Solution I have tried but failed:
People have told me it was due to the wrong ratio size of the wallpaper. This is NOT TRUE! Regardless of ratio of the wallpaper, it will never magnify the image because this had never happened in Gingerbread. Despite that, I have gone ahead and used wallpapers that were 540x960 and lower. No matter what ratio the wallpaper is, using HTC Livewallpaper Slideshow on ICS, it will always magnify the pictures.
Help:
I primarily use HTC Livewallpaper Slideshow to display pictures of my family and friends but I am unable to do so because of the magnification issue. Imagine a baby face instead of a tree in the screenshot and how it will look. Just very annoying looking through a Slideshow of smudged and disoriented faces.
I don't know much about porting, but is anyone able to just port the GB HTC LiveWallpaper Slideshow on to ICS directly? Or will that cause a problem? Please, can someone look in to it?

Hate to say it, but I experience the same thing. I know exactly what you are talking about regarding the "movement". Transitions? Although that is a great feature, it does not solve the magnification problem.
Sense 4.0 might allow you to use MultiPicture Live Wallper, though. It doesn't work with Sense 3.x, but perhaps with Sense 4.0? I know it's not exactly a solution to your issue, but it might be worth looking into.

Sorry man, I know this is annoying but it is obviously a bug in the HTC code and the devs can't fix it.
Why don't you simply surround your picture with a large black border and then it will get cropped off to the right size auto-magically?

On sense 3.6 I don't think you can but with sense 4.0 you get to choose between 3 options. Just click on the htc livewallpaper and preview it. From there, there is a settings button then you can take it from there.
Thanks for the tip guys I'm trying to multi live app and it works nicely, I can change the timing to an hour (altho there are lots of times when the picture changes prematurely, but that it's ok with me) but I've noticed that my selected camera shots still zoom in, like the OPs, but my downloaded wallpaper images do not! They look perfect. Way

No. This can't be a hard fix at all...
It is HTC Dev Team's fault, they did not build Sense 3.6 properly. AOSP ICS allows wallpaper scrolling, that is why Sense 3.6 got the same resolution as AOSP which is 18:16.
my advice is edit all your photo/picture using Adobe Photoshop by manipulating Canvas Size (under Image menu). **Canvas Extension Color : Black**
Here is quick guide to help you:
1) First, edit your photo to 9:16, using Rectangular Marquee Tool, Style: Fixed Ratio
2) Image menu > Canvas Size. change 'cm' to 'percent'. set '200' for Width
By doing these, your image will be in the middle of black 'space' and the processed image will be nicely fit into your screen
---------- Post added at 05:28 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:20 PM ----------
As for Sense 4.0, just resize/crop the image to 18:16 ratio then it will be very nice with the Pan & Zoom transition effects =)

Hey, I want to thank you. This seems to be the only way to fix this issue. Although it is tedious, livewallpaper is something I must have.

Wallpaperize & WallpaperizeFree

Here i am!
Again!
I am glad to introduce you my last application called WALLPAPERIZE.
Wallpaperize is now stable but i want to add features in future, actually it does a very simple thing: it sets wallpaper for you.
Where is the news?
Let me explain...
I am not used to keep scrolling wallpaper, i hate it, so i have ever wanted to set an image as wallpaper but usual methods relay on cropping wallpaper for horizontal and vertical scrolling.
I do not need that, i need an app that brings an image and put it as wallpaper, nocrop no frill.
Wizardii is doing that but i can not understand the odd interface and also the bizzar behavior, so here it is WALLPAPERIZE.
Actually Wallpaperize has some limitations (that i will implement very soon):
- only landscape wllpaper
- can not tile in case of that image is smaller then screen dimensions
Wallpaperize comes in two flavors:
WALLPAPERIZEFREE - Free

WALLPAPERIZE- Paid version (IF YOU LIKE IT PLEASE THINK TO DONATE, IT WILL SUPPORT MY EFFORT E IT WILL ALLOW ME TO CONTINUE TO DEVELOP)
Both versions have and will have the same fucntionality.
This is my first paid application after UPD8R and SWAT, I hope that someone will help me with this latest project in order to continue to develop also FREE applications.

P.S.: it would be very polite that someone of you left some comment here or on play store, please...

Not in this Rom, but i used Gallery and Quickpick to set the wallpaper.
Seems I got same result as the other users. Wallpaper is displaced towards the top of the screen, leaving the bottom black (without image). I'm on 4.0.3/4 with stock launcher.
Any clue why is the app behaving like this?

That is more odd then previews posts... currently i have no clue and no idea why wallpaper is not displayed correctly.
In theory chosen image is rezized to screen size (1280x768, visible area) and then plotted inside a black (in your case) rectangle with virtual desktop dimension size (1500x1280, if i am not wrong).
Virtual desktop is what you see if you keep scrolling wallpaper mode.
Above dimensions are not hard-coded but requested to the system, so i can't explain that effect.
Could i send you a test version trying to log what happens?

The default dpi is somewhere around 240 or so. Setting it to 160 gives you more space on your homescreen among other things. Its set to mdpi so everything takes up as many pixels as it would on a tf201, just that the pixels are smaller.
le rustle face
Yeah Ill never go back from changing DPI. Done it for years now but this tablet is a huge diff once its done. Your right with 160 it seems to be right. Remember everyone, you MUST install Nova, Apex first or Launcher will crash and put you into a tricky spot.
I dont think people are very educated about LCD Density. Once one changes this setting and leaves it for few days you will not go back. Its hard to understand but once you read a few emails, look at some websites its major change of your device. A waste of our great FHD screen we have leaving it default. Also if you have problems with Google Play download LCD Density Modder Pro to fix it.

I'm confused. Less dpi is supposed to be better? Thought it was the other way around? Or is it that we are fooling the system into thinking there's less pixels?

We're fooling the system to think the screen is bigger as in screen size, not resolution.
Hardware wise, higher dpi is better of course but software wise, that is up to you to decide.
Looks pretty cool. Aren't some icons (like in the text editor) too small to be pressed accurately? How about external monitor?

this is why i don't mess with dpi. that and there always seems to be some launcher/widget problems.
I just attempted this with the "pro" version, it threw up an error about not being able to find a file, then, once reboot was attempted, it would hang on the Asus logo. I had to manually re-install the factory firmware with a memory card, then re-root. This was on a rooted .26 device...possible complicating factors was I was running the weather widget and a live wallpaper on Nova.

The image is too large. Change the size to 1200 x 800 pixels and you should be able to see most of it (I had to reduce the dpi settings on my current wallpaper to be able to use the entire image).
Make a picture that is 3 times as large as the image you want to use that is kind of plain or like a frame then paste your image into the center of that and put the results on your GNote10. Use gallary to crop the image to the size you want to use and your finished.

u can also try multipicture livewallpaper
I was struggling with similar issue - any custom image, even with really high resolution was looking way worse than the sock wallpapers.
When you are setting custom image to wallpaper from gallery, you need to crop it so it fits your screen vertically and horizontally.
Yesterday I've found this app: Image 2 Live Wallpaper and it solved my problem. Here are few sample screenshots:
Setting regular wallpaper - you lose a lot of the image by cropping it so it fits horizontal and vertical screen:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Vertical compare (no differences):
Horizontal compare (a lot of differences):
You will probably need to play with the app's options - I have all check boxes unchecked.

Another Excellent G3 Wallpaper site

Hi all. I just came across a website that has produced some very well made G3 wallpapers that really shows off this phone's screen. Unlike some of the other HD wallpaper websites I've been guided to, this is one that already has the wallpaper resized to fit our screen if you use the Google Photos app to save it as home screen wallpaper and not the default gallery app. Just tap on save as wallpaper (and save as lock screen wallpaper if that's what you want) and it's done. No need to try to crop, resize or position a certain part of the wallpaper onto the screen because the rest won't fit. I should add that I only use the static home screen feature, so those with multiple screens, this may not be as appealing to you. These are 1440x2560. Hope you enjoy!! Wallpapers Lg G3 1440 2560 Quad Hd Awesome Hi Quality
Examples of some I've downloaded:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}

Use the Google Photos app to set it as home screen wallpaper. Don't use the default Gallery app because it will zoom and crop it. Also, I only use static home screen. If you have multiple home screens, then I don't know how well these will work. You might want to find some with a resolution higher than 1440x2560 if thats the case.

Download an icon pack. Then download ThemeX from the market. Then use ThemeX to pick out which icons you would like to use and download them to your sd card. Go the LG home screen, long press on the icon you want to edit and pick the icon that you saved to your sd card.
Here's another one: http://www.lgg3wallpaper.com/
Man, this cropping is getting on my nerves. Does anyone know how to stop the wallpaper from cropping?

Don't use the Gallery app to set as wallpaper. Use the Photos app to set it as wallpaper. The Gallery makes you crop it. The Photo app allows you to save the entire image.
I am using the photos app (google) and it autocrops the pictures I try to set as background. Any suggestions?
Seems to me that a lot of these wallpapers aren't really QHD at all. Sure thats the size of the image, but they have clearly been upscaled, probably from 1080P or even 720P. Most when zoomed in to 100% are pretty jagged or blurry.
Finding REAL 1440P portrait wallpapers is proving to be pretty tough.

Pretty sure its ThemeX. Looked for ThemerX and doesn't exist. But the app works just how you explained it.

Yes, that's it. Didn't realize I put the "r" there. I was at work at the time. Glad you got it working though.
For all you users looking to avoid cropping issues, download Wallpapyrus from the Play Store. It sets your picture as your wallpaper without cropping.
Not at all.

It really isn't difficult at all, the problem is that people aren't aware of something called Wallbase. There you can find tons of wallpapers up to 4K resolution. It has a nice app to it as well. Totally free on Android Market.
Don't give two ****s about any wallpaper app, pack, or anything called something like "G3wallpapers.com"... On Wallbase you can find exactly what you are looking for and not some ****ty up-scaled wallpapers. Cheers.
Another Wallpapers Site !!
A lot of wallpapers here: http://www.droidviews.com/downloads/wallpapers/
If you want a scrollable wallpaper at the best res, you'll probably want 2880x2560. 1440x2560 gives just a static wallpaper that's not scrollable (unless you crop).
Thanks... Fantastic Site

I beg to differ, viewing at 100% clearly shows that most of the pictures sizes, even on Wallbase are the same basic image, just scaled to the size you download, the original source image is often just 1080P, even many of the 4ks are obvious upscales
