[Q] Custom contact ringtone problem. Help please. - General Questions and Answers

First of all, let me say that not only am I new to android, I am also new to smartphones in general. So when - in your amusing video, which I quite enjoyed watching - you say 'noob'...I mean NOOB!
I have Googled this problem extensively and have posted this question on 5 other android support forums over the last month or so, and although it seems (from my research) many people have this or a similar issue, no-one has come up with a solution. A forum memer from one of those websites has now suggested I post this here. I have, before posting, searched this site also for a solution, but it appears that although some have a similar problem, there has not yet been a solution found, or the advice given hasn't worked in my case.
So here's hoping somebody here can help with this irritating and inconvenient issue:
Device: Samsung Galaxy Ace
Carrier: Virgin Mobile
Country / Language: UK/English
OS / Browser / build number: Android Gingerbread 2.3.3
I am having the problem where I have set custom ringtones for some of my contacts, but they are not always being played as they are assigned.
I have all of my ringtones in an folder on my sd card (/sdcard/ringtones, having moved them from /sdcard/media/audio/ringtones to see if this solved the issue. It didn't)). I have a custom ringtone (mp3) set as the default ringtone and a couple of other custom ringtones set for a few of my contacts. However, when I receive a call the phone does not play the correct custom ringtone for that caller but instead plays the custom ringtone assigned to the previous person that called. If the caller is also the previous person to have called me, then it will play the correct ringtone, as they are the previous caller. (If that makes sense??)
To reproduce: Basically I install some mp3s onto my SD card. I go into my contacts, choose a contact, then click 'edit'. I then set the desired ringtone as the custom ringtone for that contact and click 'save'. When that contact rings, instead of the assigned ringtone, my phone plays the ringtone of the person who called me before that. When the next person rings, it plays the ringtone it should have played for the last contact. And so on. When I check the details for that contact, it confirms the ringtone I had chosen is still selected for that contact, it just doesn't play that one, but the one of the previous caller.
In addition to posting on Android help forums, I have also reported this bug to Samsung, although I'm not convinced it is a Samsung problem as clearly (according to my research) it is happening across the board with several other makes of Android phones. However, the reply I received from Samsung was:
"Thank you for contacting Samsung. As of yet, Google has not developed a fix for this fault so we may have to have the phone taken in by one of our engineers without any real guarantee it will be resolved. We could set this up for you but you may have to wait 28 days for the phone to be returned to you."
I am sorry, but I think it is unreasonable to be expected to give my phone up for a month, with no guarantee the issue will be sorted, just to be able to use a facility Samsung state is already available on the phone when it is clearly not.
I am inclined to believe this is an Android problem, and therefore would really appreciate any advice/a fix/solution anyone on here may be able to offer.
Thank you.

This problem - or lack of a solution - is really annoying me now as no-one seems to have a fix for it. I have over the last month posted on 6 forums: Android Central, Android Forums, Android Community, Google Android Support, OHA Project Issues and XDA developers. In total the post has had over 2500 views but NO solution!
I have also submitted the issue to Samsung - they don't know how to fix it either!
Have I got the only unfixable problem ever to affect an android phone??!!
I just don't understand why the developers of both the phone and the operating system can't solve a problem in their own product!
PLEASE, can anyone help?

"Have I got the only unfixable problem ever to affect an android phone??!!"
Looks like it

Thanks for all the interest. Not.

Well. I was advised to post this question on here by a couple of other Android forums, as they said you guys love trying to find solutions to this kind of thing.
But not even any interest or replies or even acknowledgement, least of all any suggestions.
Guess those Android forums just got it wrong.....

It might be true that Samsung can't do much to fix this, it's clearly a software problem and maybe it has not been fixed by Google (or maybe it has been fixed and you don't have the OS version that has the fix, i.e. Gingerbread 2.3.6/2.3.7)
I'm sorry to see that nobody replied to this yet, but the reason might be simply because nobody really knows how to fix (if possible) this problem. Again, this is a software problem and Samsung doesn't have much to do here, so you could try and flash a newer OFFICIAL rom for your Ace, as custom roms might have some other bugs. (You could try with CyanogenMod maybe?)
I hope you can find a way to make it work good luck.

Device: Samsung Galaxy Ace
Carrier: Orange Romania
OS: Android Gingerbread 2.3.3
I too have had a similar problem: when a normal contact calls it uses default ringtone... when a custom ringtone contact calls after that, the same default ringtone is used... if the custom contact calls again the custom ringtone is used.
Possible solution:
Put all ringtones in SDcard/Media/Audio/Ringtones
Go to Contact -> Edit -> Ringtone -> select Sound -> browse SDcard/Media/Audio/Ringtones and select your custom .mp3 file -> Save Contact
Test to see if it works and then reboot and see if it still works.
Please reply or press Thanks button to let me know how it turned out

Thanks, but I had already tried this in the beginning, but no luck

I'm sorry to hear that... That exact method helped me. It may still have a glitch every week or so but it doesn't happen very often.

unbelievable, looks like there is truly no solution.. screw everything that Android has to offer if something as trivial as this can't be fixed.

TF3D Date/Time Stamp SMS Issue (2016?)

First of all... Happy New Years Everyone!!! I have a Sprint TP2. It's Jan. 1, 2010. My TF3D, however, thinks it's 2016 when receiving text msgs on my SMS stamp dates. I tried messing around w/ some settings on my phone, (doing soft reset, messing w/ TF3D calendar settings, changing WinMo time zone, etc.), but for some reason I keep getting my text msgs showing up as "1/1/16" as the date/time stamp in TF3D on my phone. It is also in the WinMo Threaded SMS, which wouldn't make it a total TF3D issue. When I change the calendar settings in TF3D to that calendar date, it only shows the time and not the physical date since it's a current day in TF3D's judgement.
The reason it shows that 2016 is the year, I believe, is that Jan. 1st on the 2010 and 2016 calendars both start on a Friday. Does anyone know of an existing fix or if there's some way to fix this without hard resetting my phone?

Verizon here.. same problems all over PPCGeeks. I am running MM Impact rom 12.28.09 2.5 and have the same issue. Maybe a prize for the first person to resolve it???
Thank you. I'm not the only one. I have the EXACT same problem. 2016 SMS timestamp. Tried everything I can think of.
Mines to, the exact same year also... its stupid because this 300 dollar "high tech" phone cant keep time better then my last cheap Razor.

It seems this is not just affecting a small group of people.

I dont even think a hard reset will fix this problem. I believe its an issue built into several WM6.5 Rom's

Special Thanks To Ziggy!!!
I have to say that this is the quickest response to a sudden issue such as this. Didn't realize it could be solved that easily and within the same day. Nice touch putting this in a .cab format for those who aren't comfortable editing regristy files. Thanks again man.

x2, worked like a charm, may your online-name live in mobile device history ;D
Question about this. I don't have this issue BUT the SMS server on my provider is messed up. If I'm on 3G, it will date all my incoming SMS's one hour behind. If I'm on Edge or GSM, they are the correct time. Will this solve my problem aka use the device's time for the timestamp?
Will this work on GSM devices?
Hey all, while searching for a fix for these, I came across these links. They provide hot-fixes, by HTC. This has not only FIXED the problem of 2016, but also put the MMS/SMS separate thread issue to rest as well (if you are scratching your head, my phone, on top of the 2016 bug, was making separate threads for picture messaging, making it difficult to keep everything organized).
US Cellular Touch Pro 2: http://www.htc.com/us/support/touch-pro2-us-cellular/downloads/
Sprint Touch Pro 2: http://www.htc.com/us/support/touch-pro2-sprint/downloads/
These are the only Touch Pro 2/Tilt 2 Fixes that were available via the HTC website. Verizon and AT&T either are not affected or have not made the fix available, yet.
Hope this Helps you all.

I know the link has been posted but short version is
If your rom cooked or OEM uses OEMDrivers (chances are is does)
then go to the link posted above
load the following on your phone and reboot when done loading BOTH to save time.
-Ziggy471 USCC Rilphone.cab
-CorrectSMSDate.zip
works for me
if you wanna know how read the post or simple version
first file patches/replaces a dll used when reviving sms to fix the issue rather than work around it like the reg edit "fix" file
second file fixes your screwed up times on the texts already on the device.
have fun hope that helps

Not sure I follow completely. The links I posted do both fixing whatever files needed fixing AND change the text messages already on the device. This was all on top of the fact that all the threads were together again (both SMS and MMS were in one thread, instead of two or more). AND, to boot, those links were to fixes made by HTC and for the Touch Pro 2 (for Both Sprint and US Cellular Versions). All other versions are work-arounds and third party (not made or authorized by HTC or the phone company), which can lead to extra charges if one were to have to bring it in for repair/replacement and they see non-standard Roms and so on.
Have a nice day.

Can anybody answer this question for me?
I'm looking for the download for the Official Sprint Hotfix for the 2016 timestamp. When Sprint/HTC released the patch, the HTC website and Sprint Website had different versions. My wife and I both have TP2's. I've updated to 6.5 and constantly flashing. I cannot convince my wife to leave the stock 6.1. I left the hotfix undone on hers in hopes of convincing her, but to no avail.
Now she really wants it fixed. HTC and Sprint have removed it from their websites and only have the 6.5 update. I have the one from the HTC website still (not sure how I lost the one from the Sprint website) and it gives invalid version. I have searched here, ppcgeeks and google, but only able to find the ones from the HTC website or non official fixes.
If anyone still has the one from the Sprint site laying around, an upload would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for your time in advance.

(Q) 3 Questions about ROMS

I'm a newbie and i got 3 questions about roms before i install it.
1) whats the best looking rom out there now?
2) is android considered a rom?
3) whats the best rom that saves the most on battery power?
1) Depends on your device :]
Whatever device you may have, go to the main-forum panel and locate [scroll down] until you find your specific phone type. Open the Development section and click on a few to find some images. Some look better than others, some perform different. Its all about personal preference.
2)The Stock [standard] Android System is a ROM. [Note; Stock ROM]. These are un-touched unless otherwise said so. Although that wouldn't be a stock ROM anymore now would it?
3)Again, depends on which phone you have. If you want, post your device name and I'll help you out.
As said from TKTAB911, everything depends on the device. There are different roms for each device, you just have to go to the appropriate subforum and read the threads. Depending on the comments you can find out if people are satisfied with each rom.
Usage problems
Hi everybody,
I am using Android (26.JAN][DFT/CWM] NexusHD2-Froyo V1.9G [Android2.2.2][Kernel: tytung_r2_oldcam) on HTC HD2.
I like this build very much.
Altough I have some problem:
- I am from Hungary. The build does not know hungarian language (it is not problem of course). I am using hungarian keyboard, for emailing, and sending sms. When I use extended(?) characters (ie: ő, ű, á) at sending sms, the length of sms reduce from 160 to 70(?). When somebody uses hungarian language android, it can handles this characters. Also my old Nokia phones was an option not using Unicode (or extended) character. Is it here any settings, or application, what can help, that i could use these characters without reducing the sms size?
- With the built in Exchange client I can not move email to Exchange folder. (Altough I can see the content of the exchange folders). Is it any chance to move letters to these folders?
- I have not got built in FM radio. I haven't found it on market neither (only internet radios). Could you advise something?
Thanks for helping me,
ga
Try one of the Handcent SMS, ChompSMS, GO SMS apps.
You can contact the developers to fix the issue. The handcent sms dev does respond to your mails.
Hi duk3r,
I tryed Handcent SMS. It perfect for sms extended chars problem. Furthermore the application is very good and beautiful, thanks.
Any ideas for the other two problem? (Moving email, FM radio)?
Thanks,
ga

[Q] Motorola Droid callback issue

Hello Developers. Non-developing embryo here, with a question. First, an abbreviated background. I am in Ireland, originally from NY, and was given a Verizon Motorola Droid XT912 (now running JB 4.1.2) by my 93 year mother who was compelled to buy it but, of course, never could sensibly use it. When she sent it to me, I found that unlocking was unnecessary - a foreign SIM card and thesomewhat annoying but less than occasional 'unknown sim' notification, followed by my 'ok' was enough to get it to work fine. Being a US phone, it was set up for US phone numbers - I get around this by putting the +353 in front of all my contacts - no problem. However, when someone calls me, their local number shows up without the +353, and if I miss the call and just click on the number to call back, the phone automatically puts the +1 0 (for USA) in front of the number, and naturally the call doesn't work. Not the end of the world, but annoying. I figured I would see if rooting the phone could get me to the file where this +1 is indicated so I could change it to +353. I have rooted the phone, backed up all with Titanium backup (got rid of a lot of VZ garbage) but have no idea about how to locate the file in order to change the text. I'm hoping that someone here has an idea of how to do it. Be reminded that my mother is 93 - which makes me, um, older, so, please be kind. Thanks for any suggestions that anyone has.
By the way, if anyone has suggestions of any additional Moto/VZ applications that are listed in Titanium that, being in Europe, I'll never use, I'd appreciate that as well.

Please install a stock ROM of your locality/region. Search the "RAZR HD Android Development" thread for the ROM. Also search youtube for "HOW TO INSTALL <rom> RAZR" videos. when you are confident enough, start with the process!
example) I am from Asia and we have no JellyBean here, I installed "XT910 European Retail ROM" with help of a Development thread and a video "how to install jellybean xt910" in youtube.
The steps are to be done carefully. Also make sure to install drivers before you start!
this will get you out of all issues!
Ah, thank you. I have begun to read the procedure here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1955447
Frankly, this is well beyond my capability and confidence. I imagine it is just easier to having to live with a small work around regarding the callback prefix. I was hoping that this would be more like a Linux procedure, where such a directive would be found in an etc or configuration file, and only needed to be edited. I shall keep studying, but I imagine that my ignorance and the risk involved far outweighs the inconvenience of a call back number.
Thanks again for your response.

Series of text logs following a restart - Not observed before what are they? (And a couple of other questions)

Hey there, got a few questions that I'm hoping someone knowledgeable could answer for me. If this should be posted elsewhere let me know, any advice would be great! DM replies are welcome.
I'll be vague but recently I've begun to notice inconsistencies on my phone that I share with someone very close to me. They are more technologically capable than I am and have so far protested their innocence. so I'd really like to know what's happening if at all possible, may be nothing but I don't have the experience to know either way.
1. Found a series of txt logs that I didn't seem to be able to open, they appeared - after my phone powered off - in my documents folder with time stamps that appear to be shortly before the phone was turned on again (images included below). What are they? I have never noticed these before.
https://ibb.co/DV512T4
2. Whether coincidentally or not I also noticed 2 entries in my notifications for "download.bin" and "unknown" each from before the power off however when searching my download manager, found nothing, what could this be? Come to think of it I have noticed very similar occurrences in the past however didn't think of it as odd until recently.
3. My notification history has reset about 4 or so times in the past few months, to my understanding this should only be possible when disabling and reenabling the setting - I am referring to the 24 hour breakdown. I cannot find any mentions of this and with other things I've noticed recently (permissions manager being accessed multiple times during the play time of one particular game interspersed with the use of chrome observed through app manager, empty notification categories etc). Phone has been out of my possession each time. Am I correct in saying that this is evidence of the data being manually cleared/affected, can I even find evidence as to whether or not that's happened? I have not found any information on the 24 hour breakdown disappearing other than "turn it off and on again to wipe" - If so, is there a way of accessing or restoring old logs so I can check the days where the history went?
I had a talk with the person about things like hidden apps, operating system changes and a load of other stuff that went over my head so I really don't know what to expect but I've since changed my passcode and restricted their access until I have a better view of how my phone's been used.
Final question, I've noticed a large number of screenshots and camera photos being taken according to my device care setting and history, problem is when I go to access my gallery, recycle bin etc - They aren't there. I haven't yet tried recovery methods as I am unsure about my options but advice on that one would be good.
Thanks for your time and any help offered in advance!
I remember a similar post not too long ago, that was almost exactly the same. Now it seems the same post, but posted as a first post of a new member. I find this dubious...
My advise: do not share your phone with anyone, especially when in doubt what they do with your phone.
If you are suspicious of what they may have done/installed on you phone, do a factory reset and continue with a clean phone. Before factory reset, back up only files/data that you trust.
Finaly, this post seems to have no relation with the S21 Ultra, so you're in the wrong forum.

Problem here is that I can ask her about things like this and get an "oh I don't know" etc etc. When you lack the technical knowledge to know for sure it's a real downer because frankly I could be staring evidence dead in the face and be unable to see it. Looking at these logs, what would you say is going on here? I need someone that actually understands this stuff to put my mind at ease, or alternatively tell me exactly what's gone on.
I've asked about the facebook downgrade attempt and simply got asked "Why would I do that, there's no benefit to it. Wouldn't even know how". I am not having a fun time right now lol.
Thanks a lot for your reply

You seem to have missed the point, the idea is to try and gain understanding on the log and to determine what process would have caused it to generate and contain the data it does over 3 months after purchasing the phone. I don't know if I explained that well enough so if so my apologies.
I don't know how to answer that myself so I used a public forum to try gain the answer, I don't feel like that's wrong?
Also this is a log from an S21 Ultra 5g so it made sense to post it there

Hi there, trying to figure out why no sound is made from the head unit OR the phone when connected through bluetooth.....Not running Android Auto (disabled app).
Is there something simple I'm missing? 1st dive into these android head units, Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
Mekede or Winca or ???
****added hwinfo pics
Only solution I've found is to disable Sounds option in bluetooth access on the phone AUDIO and MESSAGE ACCESS. This at least allows the phone to make it's notification sounds while connected to head unit.....phone calls still get routed to head unit.
Doesn't seem there's any working method to have a notification on screen/with sound with this head unit....for now this will do
Update......it appears setting the unit's bluetooth Version to AVRCP 1.6 (in developer options) allows for app notifications to sound through the head unit.....No on screen toast etc, but I'm happy with the notification alerting audibly

What unit is this?
What can i do/what can't i do?
Can/how can i root it ?
I've been reading but it is all just a blur of info to me at this point......anyone care to help clear the clouds for me??
Thank you in advice!
Trying to answer a bit of your questions, as notifications via Bluetooth are also a grey area for me.
Your unit has a fyt manufacturer id of 116. That id is used by YIN, NaviFly , Mekede , Prelingcar, Runningway, NIDYGR, Hengcheng, COHO and a number of unbranded units/resellers (and the list grows almost daily on aliexpress). Pick the one you like , but actually it doesn't make a difference. A Mekede firmware (last one 14 March 2023) will do fine.
What notifications do you want?
WhatsApp -> Register your unit under your phone, and it will receive notifications as well. @Clandaries wrote a post about that. See here.
Use the paid version of Tapatalk on your unit and do the same. It can relay multiple notifications.
About rooting: Why do you want to do that? What do you think it will bring?
"What can I do? What can't I do?" Wow! This is really a very broad question which can result in thousands of answers. Tell us what you want. That gives us the option to give you more specific answers.

Thank you for clearing up some questions i had! It really helps me out. As to notifications, mainly it'd be nice to receive sms messages w/pop up on screen (not required, but it would be convenient)
Root, well honestly I'd like to use viper, i see that it's mentioned that it doesn't "work", that's something I'd like to play with (again not a necessity but i use viper on my phone and it makes a huge difference on vs off.
I think however most of what I'd like to do is run through different firmwares , for instance (not sure if available) but I'd like to try different firmwares with different camera apps, for instance current firmware has a Front Camera app....but nothing to manually view the rear cam....i believe, could be wrong, that some firmwares might even have a camera dvr app built in .....features like that which are missing....i tried a 3rd party dvr app from playstore but they all seem tailored to using cellphone cameras so its hit or miss as to if the apps even recognize the cameras......
Had one app that recognized front camera and it would record, but even switching to reverse would stop the recording and not resume.
Most of what I'd like to do may just be out of range of potential for these units....I'm really trying to feel out the limits and expectations.
Thank you 1000 times !!!
I appreciate you taking your time to answer my posts and helping to educate me on these devices.
I'll be reading back and forth through these post until i feel comfortable enough to start tinkering (and grab a factory firmware in case i mess up )

Viper might work nicely on a phone without DSP.
However, all these units come with a highly modifiable DSP nowadays. You don't need Viper (from my point of view).
And indeed, to prevent usage of Viper, you can now only use it when rooted.
