(Q) 3 Questions about ROMS - General Questions and Answers

I'm a newbie and i got 3 questions about roms before i install it.
1) whats the best looking rom out there now?
2) is android considered a rom?
3) whats the best rom that saves the most on battery power?

1) Depends on your device :]
Whatever device you may have, go to the main-forum panel and locate [scroll down] until you find your specific phone type. Open the Development section and click on a few to find some images. Some look better than others, some perform different. Its all about personal preference.
2)The Stock [standard] Android System is a ROM. [Note; Stock ROM]. These are un-touched unless otherwise said so. Although that wouldn't be a stock ROM anymore now would it?
3)Again, depends on which phone you have. If you want, post your device name and I'll help you out.

As said from TKTAB911, everything depends on the device. There are different roms for each device, you just have to go to the appropriate subforum and read the threads. Depending on the comments you can find out if people are satisfied with each rom.

Usage problems
Hi everybody,
I am using Android (26.JAN][DFT/CWM] NexusHD2-Froyo V1.9G [Android2.2.2][Kernel: tytung_r2_oldcam) on HTC HD2.
I like this build very much.
Altough I have some problem:
- I am from Hungary. The build does not know hungarian language (it is not problem of course). I am using hungarian keyboard, for emailing, and sending sms. When I use extended(?) characters (ie: ő, ű, á) at sending sms, the length of sms reduce from 160 to 70(?). When somebody uses hungarian language android, it can handles this characters. Also my old Nokia phones was an option not using Unicode (or extended) character. Is it here any settings, or application, what can help, that i could use these characters without reducing the sms size?
- With the built in Exchange client I can not move email to Exchange folder. (Altough I can see the content of the exchange folders). Is it any chance to move letters to these folders?
- I have not got built in FM radio. I haven't found it on market neither (only internet radios). Could you advise something?
Thanks for helping me,
ga

Try one of the Handcent SMS, ChompSMS, GO SMS apps.
You can contact the developers to fix the issue. The handcent sms dev does respond to your mails.

Hi duk3r,
I tryed Handcent SMS. It perfect for sms extended chars problem. Furthermore the application is very good and beautiful, thanks.
Any ideas for the other two problem? (Moving email, FM radio)?
Thanks,
ga

Need someone to recommend me a ROM

I have been searching for recommendations on custom roms and since I am new I do not know if they are up to date.
I have heard of manial 2.5 and 2.1; but do not know what they are.
Also I heard there are custom roms of 6.1 and 6.5 but what is the difference?
To install a 6.5 rom do you need the 6.5 stock rom or can you do it from 6.1 stock rom?
I want performance, stability, speed, web browsing, and landscape slide out usable along with so it will work if I turn the phone and all sensors usable.
I am wishing to getting a head start since I am getting my Sprint CDMA TP2 in a few days. Any TP2 users here that think this phone is good and had it for a while?
NRG (aka EnergyRom) is probably the most popular ROM, i've been using it in various iterations since 12/09. It works well though Sprint picture mail can be problematic at times and I've been unable to disable HTC's texting/sms app (It can be ridiculously slow when you have a long conversation). 6.5 is a little more touch friendly than 6.1 but it's not a huge change. I use NRG's rom with sensity and CHT v2.0(cookie home tab which increases home screen flexibility). XDAndroid is also very nice (I'll switch permanently once they get the headphones working)
I have used nrg rom and have currently been using the superrom.
It's bare-bones and very fast. I had to add some of the .cab's that
i wanted but they are really easy to find. Phone has only frozen
on me like once and i have a large amount of text messages stored
on the phone.

Like i freezes on texts, will if freeze if I write emails on the web? Like on a forum post I may want to reply using my phone, but my reply will be long; will it freeze that way?

I have tried about 15 already and have just decided 'Mighty Rom' will be sticking around. Very fast and stable it seems.

I hope it doesn't have the same flaws as energy rom. I think I will stick with the stock Rom first. Can you list me any internet, text, calling, landscape mode, sensors, physical keyboard etc. any other possible flaws it may have? Is it wm 6.1 or 6.5 layout?
Can you link me to the most up to date mighty rom thread and original maker?
The HTC messaging problem and sprint picture mail problems aren't ROM specific. HTC messaging can take 20+ seconds to load when you've got a ton of messages(it doesn't affect the web browser or email), you can bypass this by clicking all messages before replying to a new text (this opens the default text client rather than the HTC one). There are fixes that are supposed to bypass HTC messaging entirely but they don't seem to work.
The sprint picture mail problem is due to sprint picture mail not really sending pictures but instead links to pictures (you have to install arcsoft messaging and some other files to make it work). Sharky's rom may not have this problem (since it was developed specifically for sprint) but pretty much any other custom rom will.
Sounds like you already got your answer! Try my ROM Check my sig. for my PPC Geeks thread. Seeing as how that site is more geared to CDMA, that's where all my ROM action is.
Are there any other roms that are made for Sprint winmo 6.5?
How much memory RAM does your rom have on boot up sharky?
I just today noticed on stock I am unable to send/ receive text messages but can call and browse the internet. Problem happened after a few installs like flash lite, nfs shift, resco explorer, and maybe sktools cleanup has ran and broke it. So I plan on moving on to a custom rom.
Do any custom roms change radio? Because I HOPE NOT. I don't want an SAR change lol. SAR level change will be bad.
in refferance to sktools clean up.......you have to be carefull what you delete esspecially in the invalid registory entries and values mode......i usualy leave that alone unless i no for sure what i am deleting wont affect the phone.....and also just go to your file explorer/mydocuments/regsrybkp and restore what was deleted....
I couldn't find registry backup anywhere.
got your reply my friend..get back to you in a few hours...
ok...i am no expert...ther are a lot of smart guys in this forum when it comes to ppc's...thumbs up to them...what i no about this is experience because i have deleted 100 things before i learned...i no that if you use the registry cleaner in sktools it will tell you that things are invalid and so on....when they are actually valid....why, i dont no...but first check to see if back up deleted entries is selected to yes.....in your sktools program under tools menu go to settings...then scroll to invalid registry entries and at the bottom of that list you will find that option...the same for invalid registry values...if they both are yes then everything you deleted should be in your files program under 'registrybkp'....mine is under 'mydocuments'/'registrybkp'.....and if the deleted entries are there just tap on each one and they should automatically restore...and last, if for some reason you dont have any backups then a hard reset would be my advice to you.....i hope that helped .....good luck and just keep going by trial and error!
MR.X ROM! is super fast but you cant send picture mails

I'm not allowed yet to post outside links, so you'll have to search Howard forums for this:
Touch-Pro2-Tips-Tricks-amp-Registery-Modifications
I have maybe a dumb question. What does a cooked ROM give me, more functionality and features or just cosmetic modifications?
Thanks
All of the above. More stability as well. Phone rarely freezes to the point where it needs a hard reset and also no screen of deaths.

Is there any way I could get manual or at least a list of features for each ROM?
It's either on the rom forum page or you check the rom out yourself. Usually the original poster in the first post will list a list of features and give pictures for their rom. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask and don't forget to thank me if I helped.

[Q] Mod ROM Newbie

The last time I rooted a phone and installed a custom ROM was on a HTC with Windows 6.5, so to say I'm rusty is an understatement.
And honestly, I liked HTC Sense so I never had the urge. But now, I have been waiting for the ICS Android for so long that I think it's time to Mod Again! And it will be nice to get rid of that pink T-Mobile crapware! So I have a few newbie questions, I'll hope you'll forgive me.
1. Will I be able to keep all my app store bought apps? How?
2. Can I go back to the "official" ROM if I have to send in my device for repair?
3. What are considered the best HTC Sense/ICS Roms for the sensation?
4. Will I be able to migrate my contacts? How? (and will I be able to get rid of the awful duplication of records that seems to have occurred somehow)
5. Is there a reason to actually not go for HTC Sense? I personally really like the smart linking features of contact related information and the way contacts work with all the social networks info in one contact record. I think the contacts are where the phone shines. I hate the bugs in the music app and I don't really like the photo app either.
6. Where can I find a good step by step guide? (I can find it myself, but while I'm asking the pro's anyways)
7. Are there any limitations such as things that won't work as well because of driver support etc?
Cheers,
Marc

[UTIL][APP]Lenovo Security / LeSec app (anti-virus/spam/theft/firewall)

Edit: Important: The newer V4 version of LeSec may no longer be usable for non-Chinese speakers. See this post #17 here, also to discuss alternatives
For all you Lenovo users out there,
I wanted to (re-)introduce this application. Because I have the impression that many Lenovo phone users rather quicly move on to migrated ROM's from for example APKHOT/Smileyvvv/Etotalk etc, where this app is cooked out.
You may want to reconsider going back to it, if it will still work on your phone with whatever ROM you have. It is really a very useful utility:
Firstly, it is a virusscanner. Not sure how useful a virusscanner is on Android, and as I want to avoid that discussion in this thread, that is the last I say about it.
It is also anti-spam. You can black- or whitelist SMS and Calls. See screenshots for an impression. Very useful.
Anti-theft is there. Send SMS upon SIM change, or remotely instruct the phone to send location or self-destruct. I suspect, but did not try, the SMS instruction is stored in /system, so a data-wipe will not undo this. But a good hacker will fully flash, so it only protects against noob thieves, like all anti-theft apps.
But those are common functions, readily availible in other apps. But now for the interesting feature:
It has a firewall. If that is the correct name. Or an app-wall. An permission-wall? You know those apps that you download that for some reason want permission to send SMS? Why does it need that? Or why does it want to read my contacts?
Well, you can per-app decide to block a permission. This app does not need to read my contacts. That app does not need to send SMS. And it will show you if an app tried to anyway. How cool is that?
Guest- and Childmode. Hide some apps. After all, we do not want junior to see daddies tripple-X rated apps. Or the wife. Which is why you can also hide certain contact's and call-history entries (wink, wink). It may also apply to banking apps and your bookie, though that is a bit more boring. Oh, and in Child mode the radio turns of as we want to protect junior from radiation...
Some of you that use Etotalk or APKHOT ROMS may have noticed the notification area buttons to these last two that were dead because this app was missing.
We could of course worry about whether this app in itself is not a spy, reporting everything you do to the Chinese government. But you may not be aware that this is true for *any* Chinese clone you buy. Typically those clonemakers do not release the kernel or framework source, so such a spy would be in there, not in a de-installable app. And if you are really worried about it, make sure you get a phone where you can install CyanogenMod compiled from source.
Personally, I doubt either Lenovo or China is interested in me, and if they do it means they have a Infinitesimals bigger datastore to clog their machinery before they find something on people like Liu Xiaobo or Tenzin Gyatso, which is actually a good thing. But I suspect the app is simply without such sinister intentions.
Anyway, attached is the version I got from my phone. From a Lenovo A750 ICS 4.0.3 S306. But I suspect it works with any phone that uses the Lenovo Framework, so any Lenovo ICS phone that has a not too heavily modded ROM. It did also work on the ICS 4.0.3 Lenovo P700 ROW S113 (Rest Of World edition) edition.
I provide update.zip installers for MT6575 and MT6577 (because I know their partition table). It probably also works on Lenovo Framework phones based on MT6573/MT7513 or even MSM7227/MSM7527, maybe even GB ones. But then you need to take the two *.apk files from inside the zip file, and copy them manually into /system/app, as the update.zip installer will not work for that.
But do try, and please report back if it does or does not work on your phone/rom. There is also an uninstall package. Oh, and you are messing with /system, so as always, at your own risk, ensure you can always flash back a working ROM or have a Nandroid backup before you experiment.
Your zip didn't work on my A789, which is using the apkhot based rom available on forum.china-iphone.ru. After extracting the apk files, copying to /system/app and manually setting permissions, it's working like a charm.
Thanks, I really missed it. On the most recent cooked roms, I miss many things available on the Lenovo official ones, like the fm transmitter, or the butterfly-like widget on the default home screen. Some cookers tend to leave out any non standard apps without even taking some time to know what they do. Not all Chinese apps are rubbish or impossible to understand, and Lenovo is a serious company.
Ok, here you have the FM radio and transmitter of the A789, but it probably does not work, as it is Odex'ed.
And I uploaded seperate installers for MT6575 and MT6577
Also, on your APKHOT, please confirm it actually blocks permissions and blacklists SMS. I am not sure how much the APKHOT deviates from the Lenovo Framework, so merely being able to install and configure may be too soon to tell.
PS: why not try my factory-cleaned A789 ROM? It comes with all those apps by default, and I now have 3 positive feedback.
Come to think of it, why did I take this security app from A750, when A789 is newer....
Edit: Because they are both the same version. In fact the LeSec has not changed since Dec 2010, according to the internal dex binary.
I have tested call blocking and it works, but it isn't so important, since call blocking is a built in feature of the Mediatek framework. You can block calls from any contact you have on your Google account just out of the box, and it works great. I've tested older phones which used older Mediatek chipsets and that feature has been part of the Mediatek framework since MT6573.
The FM transmitter won't work that way, since it is odexed. But it doesn't work deodexed, either. I've just got a deodexed version of the app, thanks to a friend from another forum, and it doesn't work very well. It works, but I had to stick the phone to the antenna on my radio in order to hear something. People I've talked to say that the transmitter works great on the stock Lenovo roms, so maybe it's just some incompatibility with the apkhot roms.
The only reason I'm not using your rom (which I have downloaded) is that I wanted to setup the phone in Spanish, and the rom I'm currently using is the only one I've found which contains that language. Just a quick question: is there any noticable performance increase on the s227 based roms? If so, I don't care using the phone in English, since I just want the most feature rich rom.
Thinking it twice, I've remembered another reason. One of the things I like most about the apkhot rom I'm using is that the external sdcard is mounted on /sdcard and not /mnt/sdcard2, which avoids problems with many apps. I tried one of the newest apkhot roms, based on s227, and none of the tricks to exchange /sdcard and /mnt/sdcard2 worked with it.
I'll reply to that in the A789 thread, as we seem to deviate from the security app.

I remember there was an update of that app on my A750 with your ROM. Now with apkhot I installed that package posted above and I have the older / original version. But there is no update offered...
That was probably on the S148 Gingerbread ROM. That one has an older version. I know, because I messed up trying to install it, as I had that older GB version and the new ICS one both in my Titanium backup. Also, the Dec 2010 date is probably false, I just got OTA ROW_S114, and it too had all files timestamed to Dec 2010. But I am certain the LeSec from S306 and S227 are the same, the binary compared identical. Official version is V3.5.1.3.5.2.0041 and the update button tells me there is no newer.
Every so often it does update the virus/blacklist signatures, but that is not the app itself. Current virus signature 2012.09.14 Current harasment (blacklist) 2012.07.11
But if you find a newer one, please do let me know.
I've been trying LeSec further and it works, but I found a problem I wasn't able to fix, so, until I found a solution, I've freezed it with Titanium Backup. The problem is that I'm using Go SMS Pro, instead of the default messaging app, since I need to write SMS in Spanish and the default app doesn't support Spanish characters like accents, etc. Go SMS Pro works, but every time I send an SMS, LeSec thinks an unauthorized app is trying to send an SMS in the background, and shows a popup to let you decide whether to allow it or not. I haven't found a way to disable that, and it's a bit annoying having to click two buttons everytime I want to send a message.
Its probably a silly question, but you did go into LeSec->ChargeShield-SMS and ensure that your app was allowed to send SMS in background?
Probably for reasons of 'likely form of attack' the SMS apps are (unlike other permissions) by default in a 'Warning' setting, but if the warning does not come to the foreground on your phone, it may simply not work.
Also, rather than freezing LeSec completely, you could go into ChargeShield, and simply turn of the ChargeShield.

No, I used the S148 just some days and updated to your S306 V1.2 and simply stayed there, because it works very well. After some time it offered me an update and the user interface changed a bit with that update. The way how you set privacy on app level and so on. The update button itsself never worked for me either.
Sadly, backup never worked on that rom. I found that out as I wanted to try apkhot. To be honest, I didn't try on apkhot, yet.
A few minutes ago, I was offered a 4.1.4 version and installed it. Now it's purely chinese
Maybe I have to reboot the phone for english...

How do I save it? Any idea where it has downloaded it's update? This was done within the app...
Well, it would have simply replaced the two apk's in the /system/app folder.
So look for:
LenovoSafeCenter.apk
LenovoSageWidget.apk
or something similar, it could have changed its name, or added a 3rd component.
Got the files?
Sent from my Lenovo A750 using xda app-developers app
Well, it seems that Lenove Security (LeSec for short, and LenovoSafeCenter officially) is becoming less usuable. As mentioned above, it is fully Chinese, no Engrish anywere.
I had a look at the new V4 of it, even decompiled it. Not only 100% Chinese, but is hardcoded in the app, there are no resource xml files that we could translate. A big pity.
Also, there is one app (Waze, a social car navigation app) that in the latest version is incompatible with LeSec. Though it is at this moment the only incompatibility I ran into, it is also a pity.
That may mean we need to find an alternative:
For now, these two has shown up:
LBE : Somehow, I think LBE is actually the company that makes Lenovo LeSec. Or at least, there logo is shown in the about menu of LeSec as part of the "in cooperation with" mentions. Maybe the reason why the free LeSec is limiting itself?
Anyway, I am trying out LBE at the moment, to see how it works.
pDroid : pDroid looks promising. Specifically, they are promising ICS support, but right now, only GB, so one to keep an eye on, but not availible to us just yet.
Permissions Denied : A Paid app. But if it works well, it may be worth it. Not looked at it yet.
So, LBE seems to work well. It does not have the hiding of apps for 'child mode' and 'privacy mode'. Nor does it have the 'anti-theft' or 'virus-scan' but it does the permissions thing well.
I tested, it nicely prompted/blocked permissions. And to be honest, using a slight more clear interface. If it is permissions, which was indeed what I was after, LBE seems to do the job. I also like I can block internet use separate for 3G and Wireless. Very useful.
One problem though: Waze is failing in the same way as with LeSec. Even if I make it a 'trusted' app. It seems the latest version of Waze simply does not like to be looked at too closely.
anti theft
I cannot input number In anti theft . for ex if I write +35989xxxxx I need two more digits but it does not allow it. If I write in national format 0899.... I have to write more digits than the phone number has. Any solution?
As mentioned, while I started enthusiastic about LeSec, it is now focussing too much on China alone. Not as good internationally.
Try using one of the other anti-theft solutions.

[Q] Main reason to install custom ROM's on WP7

Hi,
I have been a WP user for a very long time (A journey which started with HTC Artemis)
I had started using the custom ROM's provided by some amazing chef's over here compared to what MS was dishing out.
I am not having the WP7 from the first day it had launched (Started with the mozart and now on lumia 800)
I have not yet tried to root the mobile or install a custom ROM in this as for the first time I am loving what MS has given.
Since there are quite a lot of people here who are using custom ROM and also rooting their devices I was wondering what I am missing.
If you have rooted your device or installed a custom ROM please let me know the advantages of rooting and/or installing a custom ROM.
I had searched the threads and could not find an answer anywhere so if this was posted somewhere before apologies.
This has definitely been asked (and answered) before, but the short version is that custom ROMs give deeper access to the system (ability to replace system files, which are locked in ROM, and ability to completely bypass the security system, for example). They also can include the best firmware features from multiple different OEMs. Current "rooting" ability gives less complete access than a custom ROM (for example, native EXEs aren't supported yet, although that's being worked on and should be available soon), but also maintains the OS's ability to receive official updates. Stock ROMs are also less likely to have bugs than custom ROMs, though they typically also offer fewer features.
Of course, part of it comes down to the model of phone you have. LGs can be rooted, but don't get custom ROMs. Lumia 710s (and a very lucky few Lumia 800s) can get custom ROMs, but we havent' been able to root their stock ROMs.
I had checked a few threads but did not find the complete list of benifits in one central place hence this thread.
I am giving below the benefits of rooting based on my little knowledge. It would be great if some one would be able to add to this very small list.
Pro's of rooting
1) Can install the best firmware for your phone regardless of your carrier and your location.
2) Can side load apps which are not approved by MS and not in the marketplace
3) SMS tones
4) Using the phone as mass storage (Not sure about this one)
5) Change the available fonts and metro theme colors
A very small list from me so it would be really great if someone could expand and also correct if the above list is wrong.
I just really dont know if I should custom rom mine. I have so many sms and mms, couple of my games are finished, and final fantasy is still halfway through. Carbon isnt in the marketplace anymore but I still have it. Also messages in whatsapp viber and kik, risking all those for full unlock and homebrew apps that I need but lived without since I bought a titan. If it were possible to export messages, and game progress, and import them back, then I'd definitely custom rom mine, else I'll just have to get a lumia 920 and then do a custom rom.
Ability to send all files through bluetooth to other phones is also great, you should really consider jailbreaking.

It's defenetly worth trying out the 7.8 rom, with the windows phone 8 startsceen!! (link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1908624)
I'm sure you won't regret this one!!! (Microsoft is said to release this February 2013!)
And after you have the Nokia apps (Maps, Music, Drive, City Lens & Counters) you won't let the custom rom's go!!!
(Use this HSPL guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32097753&postcount=14)
For the backing up part: USE CABSENDER! (http://xboxmod.sylvester20007.com/TOOLS/WP7-Update-Cab-Sender.rar) (as Admin)
Thanks sianto I really appreciate it, but I've read some posts around that backing up via cabsender and after installing a custom rom, you won't be able to use that backup anymore as the ID changes per rom install. Is this true? Is it not like in android where you perform a full nand backup and restore anytime?

Thanks sianto I really appreciate it, but I've read some posts around that backing up via cabsender and after installing a custom rom, you won't be able to use that backup anymore as the ID changes per rom install. Is this true? Is it not like in android where you perform a full nand backup and restore anytime?

Well, it is unstable sometimes! But you just need to copy the folder xxxxx - xxxxx - xxxxx - xxxxx - xxxxx
x: is something random
from an temp folder called Windows Phone Update C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update
to an safe location, and (after flashing) place it back (with still an extra copy on a safe location) and just use R.
It "should" work!

Editing / Modifying existing Custom Rom Utility?

Hi All,
I was wondering if you could point me in the direction of (IF SUCH A UTILITY EXISTS) a webpage / App / Windows Utility, that can open a pre-made existing custom rom. And say for example it can.....
1) Change the Build.Prop file, from Chinese to English and strip out any other unneeded settings.
2) Remove Chinese Apps, or any other unneeded Apps
3) Replace key Chinese Apps, with English Apps... (ie: swap pre-configured MS Bing Voice keyboard to Google Keyboard)
Basically, just tidy up a pre-released Chinese rom, into English....
Does such an App, or service exist....??? If so, can anyone point me in the right direction please...
Thanks, Lister
What you are asking for is very complex and is never one in the same across other devices. In this typical situation the best solution is to manually make the changes.
Hi Modding.MyMind,
Thank you for your quick reply, indeed I was able to make the changes post (AFTER) the initial setup, which I had to exit the setup process as the built in Voice Keyboard didn't recognise some of the words I was saying, and there was no fall back typing keyboard to type what I intended. So it meant I missed some of the in-setup questions / options. Sure, I can sign into my Google account once swapped out to the Google Keyboard that I kept on the SD card. But things like personalizing it were missed.
I'm sure about a year ago or so, there was an App on the PlayStore that could packup your installed live rom, and turn it into a flashable rom. Sure I guess thats what CWM or TWRP project can do... But sure there was a specific App that made it more like a rom packager...??
Any clues...?? Thanks, Lister
