I'm planning to get the skyrocket. My options are...
1) Buy a no contract unit from AT&T for $600, and root it.
2) Buy a rooted unit for $570 from an online seller.
Now, where I to go with route 2, would I have to contact AT&T to access their LTE? And then tweak the settings?

You have to contact at&t either way to access lte

Well the first route would entail me walking in to a corp store and buying a unit at whatever price they will be selling it to me for since I just got my contract renewed in Feb. I guess in a way I've answered my own query I sppose, better to get the phone unit from AT&T and root it and then delete all the bloatware.
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
Yes and taking that route you will have a waranty as well
I guess I might as well spend the extra dough and get the unit from AT&T and hope to God I don't frak the unit when I root it.

Aha! Forgot about that... Last Q for the day....is the following the way to go when it comes to rooting the SR or would you suggest something different/better/easier...
Being the noob that I am this will be my first foray into rooting a phone.
But I digress, here's the link I had read on rooting the SK which looked rather easy n simple enuff even for me....

If you had good payment history in the last 6 months you can just do an exception upgrade and get the phone for $100 over the going sale price... Well if you agree to a new 2yr agreement and a $18 upgrade fee.

This is the most cost effective if you don't care about another few months added to your contract... not many folks know about the exception upgrade program.
Especially good deal if your market sells it at $149. Then you're only paying $249, which is the normal price in some markets.

AT&T Has changed the exception upgrade program. Any smartphone costs $250 more than the lowest price when doing an "early exception upgrade".
Thanks guys! So I obviously ended up getting it but wanted to know if I could root it using the following link, since I don't know squat about ODIN or how to work it, I'd rather use this "one click" to root it.

So I was forced to execute my Inspire today. It was rooted, I've tried different roms/radios, flashed rooted stock rom/stock rom. It was never reliable: always dropping service, not receiving/making calls at random times, mms unreliable. I took it back to best buy to try to get it exchanged for a new one. Of course the phone was working flawlessly when I got to the store. The good news is that I had purchased the best buy protection plan for it at $10/month. I had enough of the phone not working reliably for its intended purpose and had to smash it in order to get a new unit. I went back to best buy and turned in the broken phone, and after more than a few suspicious looks from workers-got my phone sent in for repair. Of course it's not going to be repairable (I hit it with my baton , which crushed the screen and phone in the middle), so now I wait a few weeks for my new unit.
My question is, should I cancel my ATT contract and go with a different provider. I loved the actual phone, I just think the ATT "4G" service is horribly unreliable in my area. Or, are there any good Android 3G phones for ATT?
BTW, I am coming from an iPhone 4 before i got the HTC Inspire. iPhone worked awesome, I'm just tired of Apple products.
You can exchange/return your phone within 30 days so why the hell did you "smash" it?
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk

I LOL'd when I read that
In my opinion, you have the best android phone AT&T has to offer...and on this thread? I think a lot of people will think the same thing. A lot of us inspire owners are previous captivate owners! That phone REQUIRED tweaking to get it to work smoothly (and for me, to get gps to work)
You could get the atrix, but there's not much tweaking/modding/flashing you can do with it due to a signed bootloader.
yeah, smashing it was a stupid thing to do.
cancelling your at&t contract will cost you a lot of money.
LOL, its crazy that someone has to go to those lenths to return a phone, but its true especially at stores like bestbuy its like ok so u want me to go in parking lot and run over it with my car a few times? then you will exchange it? and if u didnt have a problem with it why would u want a new one? Funny the smashing with baton part though.
^ he said, he was having problems.
i agree with others, you had 30 days to return it, i don't understand why you didn't just do that, and get another phone.

I don't think any of your understood, lol. Best Buy refused to take it back because it was working fine in front of them. And I did literally say to the kid working there, "So if I take it out in the parking lot and run it over with my truck, you guys will take it back?" He replied, "Do what you gotta do, if you come in tomorrow with a broken phone I'll act like I didn't see you come in today."
BTW I paid full price for the phone ($450ish).

That was my reason for looking to get it fixed. I have pretty good soldering skills and I woulndt attempt it.
Juls if they will warranty it I would go that route. I figured it was out of warranty.
Side note, has anybody attempted to get mobile odin ported to the sgs4g? That would do away with the need for a cable.
The mobile Odin will only work if you don't Odin back to a non rooted stock.....must have root to use it .....I looked into it and will eventually let it run its 30 min long log to hand in for a request for our device

If you went with insurance I hope you told them you lost phone? By doing this it allows you to keep your phone for parts or even use it as a tester phone so you can try to flash risky stuff without worrying about being left with a dead device you will have spare. Hope you understand what I'm saying. If you say phone has problem you pay 130 and ship back your phone to them. If you already told them there was an issue and they want phone back wait a day call them back and say the phone is now lost
NOT stolen this way the phone can't be locked out hope this helped

I have not tried after I received the phone but have called a day after I put in claim and no problems. It's worth a shot I mean it could really happen. I always tell them I lost it why should I pay 130 to give my phone away and then they fix cheap and sell it high. Even if the device is broken there are still good parts that you or someone else could use
Side note you can put old phone on ebay and probably get at least 100 dollars to help cover the insurance cost.

I should of seen that coming. But who is screwing who, as phone company charges 600 for device then they require a 2 year contract and phone is only warrantied for one year so you buy insurance at 10 a month for 24 months another 240 we are now at 840 plus when phone breaks you pay another 130 for a grand total of 970, and you get a refurbished device. I understand what your saying, however it is insurance fraud. I disagree with people doing this and will speak up every time. Plus Im sure your comment and my replies will be reported to a mod and get this thread either locked or them removed. Because xda doesnt condone this and doenst allow these type of conversations.
Food for thought, if you are caught doing this it can also cause you to be non insurable as well as criminal charges or for however long the insurance company feels necessary to report you as a risk for fraudulent claims when attempting to get insurance in the future.

I agree with you and understand where you are coming from, but it makes me wonder...
If you were to flash your device and hard brick it, and you have insurance. Would you call Tmobile and say "I rooted my phone and was attempting to load third party firmware on it when I messed up and my device will no longer turn on."?
Or would you simply say your device does not turn on anymore?

I sat for three days with a semi hard bricked Droid X that I got the day after they released. I was about to buy a new phone when moto's version of odin was leaked and I was able to restore it. I also thought my Optimus V was beyond restoration and after hours and hours of tinkering got it back alive. I had paid for insurance from best buy and thought about using it but personally I couldnt do it.

I can assure you, as an attorney, that the terms of the insurance policy are such that when they pay a claim on a lost phone, it becomes their property. It's no different than if your car was stolen and then returned after you settled up on it.

I just wanted to post this for all of you considering getting a new phone on AT&T, such as the One, S4, Blackberry, etc. According to what I have read, it looks like AT&T is starting a promotion tomorrow that will give an instant $100 or more credit toward a new phone of your choice when you trade in your old working smart phone, ( 3 years old or less). This may help in the decision making process for many people.

Hopefully this last for more than 30 days since they won't budge unless im within 30 days or less.

Techinically, Sprint via internal memo and training has no real cares about your rooted phone. The rooting community is to large for them to "cut off" as it were. If something is wrong with your phone via rooting, i.e. boot looping, bricked, if you have the Equipment Protection it will still be changed for a replacement. As someone who fixes their phones as well, my main position is to correct the issue by reflashing the phone to stock software. If all else fails... no harm no foul. (They are going to refurbish that phone eventually anyway)
As for leasing, if you upgrade your phone every 12 months (early upgrade)then you shouldn't worry about resetting to a new 2 year contract. With a 2 year contract you have to wait 20 months to get an early upgrade option.
