Hanging in there - Great Hardware, painfully bad software - Verizon Droid Charge

The most amazing thing about the Samsung i510 is that even with the Rezound, Bionic, Nexus, and Razr out or on the horizon it’s hardware is still pretty damn good. Dollar for dollar, it is arguably the best screen out there and the CPU is quite adequate. The RAM is a little low, but again it’s adequate. I even really like the physical buttons and the Battery is ample (from a physical perspective).
The software! It’s all the software. I don’t think I will get a Nexus when it first comes out because I’m sure 15 days after I have a Nexus in hand Samsung will finally deliver 2.3.6 OTA with source. There’s no reason that this phone can’t become a great performer, sip slowly at battery all day long, and get CM9 in 2012 - but the patience VZW and Samsung asks of us is excruciating!

I agree I usually trade phones as soon as possible and my wife said no or what are you going to get next. I said actually Im happy with this phone atleast for awhile. Not like I was before and trading or buying as soon as I can. In between now and next year I see a possible dramatic advance at even what is coming out this year.

I totally agree. But I am not looking to upgrade to GB. It sucked on my D2 and I will not download it on the Charge. I just keep upgrading the Modem software on the Charge. That makes a big difference for me with each new software update.

GB is better than Froyo in every way on this phone. I had constant lockups and random reboots under Froyo, but everything is smooth as silk under GB. You can't compare two completely different pieces of hardware and two different software builds to each other in terms of performance. I tried at one point to go back to EE4 and I was back EP1 within two days, because by that point, EE4 was just painful to use.

Currently on EP1W and I think its great. I find that EP4P radios to seriously rock. I will upgrade to EP4P base soon depending on when we get the OTA update.
My phone is super-stable overclocked to 1.252 GHz. Seldom radio issues, good voice quality. I freeze all kinds of stuff with Titanium Backup. I generally have no issue with RAM, but don't play games... All my apps (150 user installed apps) are stored on internal memory for speed. I may upgrade the rather slow class 2 micro-SD card to a class 10 card though.
If you take some care of your setup, you will be rewarded with a great phone.
Current Setup:
Humble 4.22 EP1W
Imoseyon Kernel 3.1
Modem: EP4P
V6 Supercharger
3G Turbocharger
I/O Scheduler Changer (running noop)
Tegrak Overclock
Changed Vocoder to EVRC-B
Voodoo Control Plus
Voodoo Screen Tuner
Oh, by the way, am I the only one not not highly stoked about the Galaxy Nexus? My primary complaints are no Wolfson DAC, pentile display, curved glass, and no micro-SD slot. Also, it has the same GPU as the Charge, albeit clocked higher. I personally will wait for the Galaxy S 3 for HD SAMOLED+, but who knows what the audio hub will be (hoping its the Wolfson.)

I used to think gb sucked after loading the earlier builds. Really buggy and laggy.
So I stuck with ee4 for the longest time.
After trying out the latest ep4 build, I completely changed my mind. Superior to froyo in every way.

I was right there where you're at...then I went from stock to Humble 5.0...phone is now pretty frickin nice in my opinion

Latest GB release is smooth
I agree with all the posters here. I finally flashed 2.3.6 and what a difference it made. Lag is non-existent for me, battery life is much better, data drops have practically disappeared and phone is snappy. GPS still is slow and not very accurate. Download GPS Fix from the market and run it before you use GPS....problem mostly solved.
Overall, made this phone run the way it should have from day 1.
Those of you waiting for the release, don't. Follow the instructions and flash the new release. It is very easy and you will be glad you did !

Humble 4.22 and 5.0 are both based on GB. You can't tell me you don't experience the buzzing noise issue, can you? THAT to me is a show stopper. I don't care how fast the datarate is but this phone still needs to make calls reliably.
Tried every GB leak variants out there and none of them has that issue solved.
Have gone back to debloated EE4 with Imoseyon's latest kernel and the latest EP4P modem installed. Been very happy with it; man, it's fast, no lag, super stable, no issue with swypes 3.0's cursor jumping around like crazy when you're posting your post on forums (surely you all have gone nuts over that problem).

I can tell you that. I don't have that issue. I'm on the phone between 30 minutes and 2 hours a day. I've heard it exactly once, ever.

I am not on Humble, but I'm running a coredroid themed version of the 2.3.6 TBH leak with imoseyon 4.0 so it's basically the same thing as Humble.
To be totally fair, I do mostly texting & don't make a ton of phone calls but I have never once had a problem on a call. I talked to my boss yesterday for 45 minutes on a call & it worked just fine.
On the occasional calls I do get or make, this phone (for me anyway) is loud & clear & much better then any previous phone I have owned (& I have had a TON of phones)

Tons of posters on this forums have the same issue.
But I hope you're right. And I intend to prove your theory, hopefully soon. As soon as the GB OTA is out, I'll be demanding a replacement if the problem persists. With a Nexus perhaps, if I'm lucky.

Mind if I steal your build? I wanna try this out. How are you OC'ing the kernel? Just with Tegrak?

The noise just started happening on my wifes phone and she is bugging me about it.I dont really have the problem so was thinking of just re flashing radio files and see what happens.

I think I have to agree on all counts. I was super excited about the Galaxy Nexus coming to VZ & had a standing order in with our VZ corporate rep telling her I will buy it as soon as you can get me one.
I am having serious second thoughts however. I am so incredibly happy with my latest Charge setup (2.3.6 TBH leak W/imoseyon 4.0, LPP Plus, Fuju tweaks, camera button mod, coredroid theme etc.etc.etc.) that I am beginning to realize that with the Galaxy other than the dual processor it would actually be a downgrade for me in a number of ways.

Stumbling upon a really great ROM/Kernel/Modem combination

Cognition v3.04 + Speedmod latest version + JL3 modem
Simply put: amazing. Several things are worthy of note. First, scrolling and general responsiveness of the speedmod kernel with 500hz is buttery smooth. It also has several tweaks you can enable to maximize battery life. But, the greatest difference came with the JL3 modem. Everything was instantly snappier. GPS locked in 4 seconds flat (I kid you not), and soon had 12 locked satellites. I had never before seen a lock with 5m accuracy, and it held it like a champ. Second, DL/UL speeds went through the roof. Normally I'd see 1.5Mb D and .3 Mb up. Now I see 3.5 Mbit down and 1.4 Mbit down. Couldn't be happier. But it gets better. The battery voltage before showed 3950 millivolts. Now it's down to 3750 mV.
Better GPS, speed, internet and battery life? Awesome.
Have you tried to make a phone call? I had the same setup and thought I was on cloud 9...
Until I called my wife... She said, "it sounded like gremlins were trying eat me". So after a process of Modem flashing I've come to find that FOR ME is Cogs 3.04/Speedmod/UGHJK4 seems to be working good all around, except for my battery life isn't the greatest. Gonna give it a couple days to see if it pans out

I use Darkys rom but find that for my area JK4 has been the best so far as well. With JL3 it switches to the 1900 band frequently and in my house that gets worse reception so my battery drains fairly quickly.
As for the OP I know how you feel. Ever since I flashed an earlier version of Darky's I haven't looked back. It's been the best rom I've tried out of all of them. Despite being a complete flashing addict I've hung up the cable for the time being as I'm more than satisfied with my current set up.

Totally off topic, but that has to be THE BEST quote I have seen on this forum!
Back on topic, best combo and my current configuration is Perception 8 with Setiron's kernel. Just flashing the rom and the kernel gives me all working features that I need, plus speed and stability. And after I go through and take out all the apps that I don't use and incorporate all my necessary apps, I get around 54 hours of battery life before I need to throw it on the charger. That's with my normal everyday use consisting of mass amounts of texting, a few phone calls, browsing the web, and having 3 widgets running. All my syncing is set for 1 hour intervals, except for weather which is set for every half hour.
Not saying it will work the same for you, but it hasn't let me down at all, and it's been my daily driver for about 2 months.

Another Vote here for Darky's 9.02 with SpeedMod "Q" Kernel. I presently have the JT3 Modem and haven't had any complaints except I was at a friend's house yesterday and had a problem holding a Signal there,I might try a different Modem.
Firefly 2.0.5 w/ eSPyel oc/uv kernel based on Hardcore's q kernel with jk4 modem.... i have it oc'd at 1400... results may vary on diffrent phones... but this thing is blazing fast been hitting low 19's on linpack scores and battery is good....

[Q] just got the Nexus S 4G. should i stick with stock?

Hey everyone, i just upgraded to a Nexus S 4G this morning from the ol samsung transform, and i was planning on applying cyanogen but then i messed with the phone a bit, did root and restored a couple of my game apps...it seems to work with very nice speed, only serious issues ive noticed are just with the signal, sensitivity of keyboard, and i havnt had time to see battery life yet..
But i was wondering, since the stock rom is so clean and fast, why are we putting on different roms like cyanogen?
More importantly, as far as kernel, whats the best kernel right now for nexus 4g? im running stock kernel, but naturally and ideally id like even more speed(not sure what id use it for, but always nice), better battery life, and better data signals..
ive been reading about overclocked kernels a little bit and such, so basically im wondering about what you guys would say to all this? should i change rom &/Or kernel? to what? why? does overclocking at 1.4ghz like these kernels say have any negative side effects? things like that.
Thanks for your response!

There are quite a lot of things that can be changed by flashing a custom ROM. Cyanogen is reported to be more responsive than stock android, and a slight improvement on battery life and performance. Also, with other ROMs like MIUI you can completely change the entire GUI basically. The lockscreen becomes changeable by one click in the themes app. I've also noticed a slight improvement in battery life/performance and responsiveness.
Also, with regards to kernels, they add extra features (like voodoo sound, BLN notifications, UV'ing, OC'ing, etc). Now if you're looking to overclock your CPU AND save on battery life then that is probably not going to happen. If you OC the CPU you'll as a result draw more battery power when it reaches it's peak. Hence why I went with the TEUV88 kernel. This kernel undervolts the CPU yet manages to give me the same performance as the stock kernel. It runs extremely nicely and the battery lasts me about 24-30 hours on moderate usage where as before I was getting around 16.
Hope this helps.
Edit:: note that both undervolting and overclocking can be dangerous for any phone. The kernel developers put their kernels through testing though to ensure they are stable enough for most people (I hope anyways). But be aware that it is possible to damage the hardware be either of these methods.
yeah im looking at more undervolting for battery life cause current performance seems great for me as of this point. but i mean cyanogenmod doesnt change much since its built on gingerbread, its just slightly more customized, but on the actual performance side, it is a slight increase? so whats the best kernel for undervolting and still getting stock performance or more? im guessing its the one u just mentioned? cause i saw a voodoo kernel or something on main dev page and itwas undervolted and OCed to 1.4 i think...idk.
Yeah you might be talking about the matr1x kernel. It ocs to 1.44 and is uved also. Plus has voodoo sound, bln and bld. Some people have issues with cm7 and some don't. I really don't like the look of miui so I can't say for it. But I use decks 1.3d with zero issues and matr1x kernel with zero issues along with heavy use 4+ hrs screen time in over 12hrs. Personally running 1.44 your phone will prolly lock up but I run 1.2 non stop no freezes or lockups or reboots. Try them and see qhich ones fit you and what you like.

I'm still on stock with mine and honestly, I don't need anything else... i get 12-15 hours of moderate use and i don't really know what lag is because i never experience it with my phone.
The above posters are correct in everyway. I mean it definitely comes down to preference. I was averaging about 13-15h on my stock kernel/rom but my phone would be basically completely dead.
I switched to TEUV88-rammstein2 (Trinity Undervolted rom). It has Voodoo sound, BLN (backlight notification), and with todays update it has touchwake mod. So as you can see my phone lasted 15h (still with 35% battery left) with 3h of screen on, and 45m of audio streaming, and lots of texting.

22hrs Std. Battery on GB and Sense 3.0 = YES!

OK, so I know there has been a lot of b*tching about the Tbolt battery life, especially if you are running Gingerbread and a Sense 2.1 or 3.0 ROM (I am running BAMF 3.0 R4.9). I just may have solved this issue when you can connect to a WiFi access point!
Using a program called Tasker, I have created specific profiles that actually help save my battery as well as do a lot of other things to make life easier. The learning curve is somewhat steep for non-Tech geeks, but it's not too difficult after you get the hang of it. (I think the only version of Tasker in the market is pay for use, but you can get a free trial from the Dev's website directly.)
On to how I can get a 22+ hour standard TBolt battery:
1st new profile:
-Called "WiFi"
-Context = WiFi Connected (Any SSID)
-Task = NET>WiFi Sleep>Never
2nd new profile:
-Called "Dim Screen"
-Context = Power Source Any, click "Invert" button (so when the phone is not charging).
-Task = Display>Display Brightness>Set to "20" and check "Immediate Effect" (you can certainly change it to something higher, but you may not get nearly the same battery life).
On WiFi, I can get almost 23 hours of battery. On 4G, I can get upwards of 8 hours, 3G I have yet to test.
Since LTE was just turned on near where I live, I noticed that my TBolt was making WiFi sleep while it sat in my pocket not in use, therefor switching to 4G/LTE and draining the battery. The brightness obviously helps when I am not plugged in no matter if I am 3G/4G/WiFi.
I have some other useful profiles setup. Like I have the phone screen go to Auto Brightness and into the Sense Dock Mode when the phone is charging. My favorite is the Car Dock Profile... when the phone goes into my Car Dock, the Bluetooth turns on, GPS goes on, and Google Music Starts.
I am a big fan of Tasker now... there are a lot of possibilities with the program!

I'm gonna say you might want to try a MUCH more modern ROM. I'm having very little trouble eeking 18 hours out of mine under moderate use, and well over a day if I'm not messing with it much. It will typically consume around 1.7% per hour unused, LTE on.

how do you get the GPS to enable? I've tried to set up my GPS to come when I open maps, navigation or anything that needs gps enable but I get "sorry that action is unavailable on this device."
Llama also does what Tasker does. And its free. I find that Llama works better too. I can get near 24 hours with everything stock.

Modern? The ROM I have is running Gingerbread and is full Sense 3.0 (which appears to be a big battery hog). When I was on a GB Sense 2.1 ROM from the same Dev, I was getting better battery. The only thing that may improve the battery any more on GB/Sense 3.0 would be a new and improved Kernel, though I think I am on one of the more stable ones.

You are right, my bad... it throws up a disclaimer that GPS enabling is not available on any 2.3 ROM because of the Pop-up. They suggest using Cyanogen (sp) if you want to use the feature on a 2.3 ROM.

Potato, Patahto. I like Tasker and found it really granular once I started playing with it. I don't mind paying for an app that is well Developed and supported. (If you like Llama that much, you should use the donate version to "thank" the Dev team!) The 23hrs is an estimated capacity right now as Battery Left is still calibrating.

I think he is refering to roms based off the 2.11 leak. battery life in that Ruu is much better than any other previous ruu. Any roms based off it will give you more life by default. The bamf 4.9 Rom is kinda old when your talking about custom roms and it isn't based on the 2.11 ruu.

You say BAMF 3.0 R4.9 is your ROM. This ROM is old, based upon the 2.01 GB leak (which is about 4 leaks ago), which was terribly flawed in many ways, and isn't even being developed by BAMF anymore. The newer kernels won't even work right on that ROM because aspects of the WiFi and camera have been changed in later leaks.
You're application of Tasker is probably one of the ONLY rational uses of such an app. Using it for such things as turning GPS on and off is pointless, and redundant, because Android already does that as long as you have GPS enabled. Having it enabled doesn't use any power unless you're using apps that abuse it, such as some of the traffic update apps that constantly update your position.
Power management apps aren't quite as useless as task killer apps, but for the purposes I see people use them for, they're not doing you many favors. I'm generally not a fan of these apps and I strongly recommend against task killers because the result of their use simply increases the amount of NAND reads the CPU must make, which is the most power intensive operation that CPU performs.
Newer ROMs, such as the RUU 2.10 and 2.11 based ROMs, are significantly better on battery life than the older ones, especially when used with the radios from the 1.70 OTA, 2.07 RUU, 2.10 RUU, and 2.11 RUU. I'd make the jump to a more modern ROM before I tried manipulating an older one to perform. Or, move up to a newer one and do the same thing and see what you get. In any event, there's good room for improvement.
I tried several ways to conserve battery and finally decided that it just isn't worth it to me to have to stop running game apps, to have to set the phone up a specific way, to carefully monitor what each app does etcetera. I went out Tuesday and bought a extended battery from a Verizon store. With discount I paid $25.00 for the battery and cover. I am now getting right around twenty five hours total battery life off one charge and I have watched videos, played games, played music, and did whatever else I could think of to kill that battery. I am ecstatic with it. Now when I am out overnight mountain climbing with the missus granted I will undoubtedly kill some apps. Wouldn't do to run into BigFoot, Smokey the Bear, and Jason Vorhies with a dead battery and no chocolate bars ( since she for some reason feels I should diet) now would it?
ps. I made sure it had antennaes on the cover. It has more than my original cover does. And the clerk had no clue why i was even asking about the antenaes on the cover

Yea tell me about it. At the Verizon kiosk in Costco I actually argued with the guy because he was spouting off about the Specs on AT&T phones being better than what were on the Thunderbolt. Saying how much better AT&T was and all this stuff. I listened for only a few minutes before I realized he was an imbecile. He was just throwing out things that made him sound like he knew what he was talking about. And yea you read that right. This brain fart of a human being was promoting AT&T from a Verizon kiosk

Considering I do use a bunch of Apps that can use GPS (Foursquare, Weather, and my Car Dock=Car Home) and I don't always need GPS on to do what I do in them, I choose to have GPS inactive as to not chew up more battery than is necessary.

I have never and will never use a task killer. Tasker is basically a way to create a 'macro' or series of them to help do things without having to click 18 different things on your phone. Apples to oranges.

Really...newer kernels don't work with BAMF 3.0 RC4.9??? That's funny because I'm running Ziggy's latest on BAMF 3.0 RC4.9 with working WiFi and camera, front and back.
Out of all the 3.0, 2.1/3.0 ROM's this is the only one that I have never missed a call because I could not answer the phone because of the end only call bug.
It might be an older ROM but it's still one of the best for this phone.
UberBAMF, Adrynalyne's side-project BAMF, both of the Gingeritis ROMs, Th3ory's ROMs, Synergy... Where the Ziggy kernel came from. Maybe I'm wrong and 4.9 uses the 2.07 base. I've used nothing but 2.07 and newer Chingy ROMs for the last 2 months as daily drivers and I've never once seen this "end call only" bug.
Ziggy's kernels aren't freely available so I don't consider it an available custom kernel.

Anyone that downloads Gingeritis, or Synergy has full access to Ziggy's kernels. I would call that freely available. Either which way they still work on BAMF 3.0 RC4.9.
As for the ROM's you listed not one of them are a full Sense 3.0 ROM like RC4.9.
If you have never had the end only call bug consider yourself lucky because there are theads on both themikmik and team BAMF about this bug.

End-call only bug is real. In 2 months of running bamf (currently on uber 3), I've encountered it once. Others have been plagued with it. Basically, when someone calls, it only displays the large "end call" button.

I hardly call Ziggy's kernel freely available by any stretch of the imagination. That's like saying iOS is free to anyone to use. Not really if you ONLY get it with this product or that! Ziggy also flouts the GPL like it's no big deal, so obtaining his source is nigh impossible. He's got one of the least available kernels that exists.
Sense 3.0 is eye candy. Like live wallpaper, its cool for a day, that's about it. And Rosie launcher is weak. I mean, if that's your thing, cool. It's your phone. But AOSP roms are far beyond BAMF, and far more stable. Shift B2 is the best rom I've run on my Bolt, hands down. With G+ loaded I get between 18-22 hours moderate use. Without G+ I can get a little over 28 hours. This is all 3G, as our towers havent been upgraded yet here in BFE. I understand the desire for battery life on stock battery. I pocket mine for 8 hours a day, so extended battery is unappealing. I underclock to 768 and my phone is still more responsive than it was with sense at 1.4.

[Q] Performance

I'm finally receiving my MyTouch 4G Slide today. I was just curious how the performance is? Is the stock ROM worth wild? Does anybody play N64oid, or PSoid on there phone? If so, how's the performance? Also a personal stand point whats your favorite ROM?
I want to try out the Port of CM7, but Sense 3.0 is pretty neat. If anyboyd is running a Sense 3.0 Rom, or CM7 would they recommend it?
cm7 > sense
The Sense that the MT4GS is vastly superior to previous versions of Sense, but I'm still waiting for a viable release candidate of CM to come out.
Your battery drains pretty fast with 3d games, and if you charge while you play, your phone gets hot as hell, I recommend rooting so that you can keep it underclocked as much as possible while you play. Gaming performance is good enough that you don't need full cpu power

...as I sit here in my car waiting for my shift to start, i'm playing Castlevania: Symphony of the Night on Fpse. You can find it in the google market, and if you have any old ps1 games laying around it's worth every penny.
Works great, when i'm at home I plug the phone into my t.v. and play it that way. If anything I think it runs more smoothly when plugged into the t.v. - the audio syncs just a bit better with the same settings.
Checked my email and figured i'd cruise through here real quick before they let me in to get started.
Haven't had a chance to play with n64oid, I don't have any n64 games around anymore so I passed that one by.
About the stock ROM:
Horribly bloated, full of crap, loggers and other BS...you can find the info in a few threads around here.
If you decide to stick with the stock ROM, freeze, uninstall or kill the zipwhipgroups apk and also flash Undeadk9's security patch. Those two actions should close all known security flaws to date.
I've played with all the ROMs available, and they all offer something fun approaching the phone from different angles.
Play with them and i'm sure you'll find something (honestly...anything) better then the stock ROM.
My daily-driver keeps ending up being my own frankenstein, and once i'm basically out of a job when december hits i'm looking forward to mostly finishing it off.
Performance-wise the phone is fantastic. Even on the bloated bogged down stock ROM it still flies, and once you start flashing some of the more optimized ideas people have shared with us, you'll be even more impressed with it.
Make sure you hit up the battery thread floating around here to see why you should switch away from the stock HTC battery. I use an anker battery, and couldn't be happier - but you should see what siani_8 has to say about the Mugen batteries. Pricey, but apparently worth it. I found my anker battery for just a few bucks on amazon.
The stupid stock battery gets ( to quote another members apt description ) "Stupidly hot". Heat is death for a device like this, and whether you go with a mugen or anker, you should switch for sure if you're going to get into gaming or pushing the devices limits...otherwise you'll burn it up.
Just make sure to cruise through my backup thread, link in my sig, before you go flash happy. It'll probably make life easier for you in the long run, and it's a good review even if you're already familiar with it's contents.
Always happy to see new faces around, and you'll love the device. Best of luck!
Thank you all I read a lot about the battery issue. Considering getting one, but I might just run at 800mhz. I'm coming from a G1, and iPhone 3G. This thing fly's! But I'm having another issue, I can't root. Everything is set up right. But Rev. hangs on Zerging Root?? Or is it supposed to do that? I haven't rooted in a good 3 years. Any help is good help ;D
Also all the Emulators work, even the super buggy NDS one. I kept all my older games so I have the "Legal backup". But the games that needed the expansion pac run slow with sound on. But there on http://slideme.org/ if anybody want's them.
I'm a bit lost on performance with the MT4GS. In all my testing so far I have been getting my best benchmark score with stock rom and stock kernel without overclocking. I've tested with multpile benchmark apps and consistantly get lower scores using custom roms and kernels even while overclocked up to 1.7 Ghz. The whole thing has me baffled at this point. Using quadrant advanced I average 2100 range with all stock, compared to 1800 average using custom and overclocking. To add to my confusion, my original mytouch 4G with single core is averaging 2800 in quadrant while only overclocked to 1.1 Ghz.
I must be doing something wrong, by all rights the slide should be scoring much much higher.
Does anyone have any ideas why I'm getting my bizarre results?
Thanks much everyone.
Sent from my myTouch_4G_Slide using Tapatalk
Usually benchmark scores that are lower are better.
Not always, but in most cases this is true.
Quadrant didn't support dual-core processors, or well, or something if I remember right. I mostly ignored it when I was benchmarking things not long ago - wasn't working right on our phone.
Say what you like about Sense, I'm not a fan of proprietary junk either, but they have the camera right on this one. There's zero shutter lag, and the camera has the features and response of a mid priced point & shoot. It's one of the best cameras in any phone, and would sell for a nice price even if there were no phone attached. And that is largely because of the Sense framework on the back end.
Because of that, I highly recommend UndeadK9's Senseless ROM. This ROM is an AOSP themed ROM but he has kept the Sense framework on the back end, but only where it benefits us. He is very sensitive to issues with the ROM and responds to (i.e. usually fixes) them very quickly. And he posts on here as if he doesn't have a life.
If you use his ROM tip the man, he deserves it.
With quadrant i was getting better scores from my mytouch 4G, but if it is only using one core then the odd results make much more sense.
One thing that has had me confused is with custom roms and kernels on the slide, when I run benchmarks, my scores are about the same regardless of being overclocked or running stock.
Based on the scores, it looks like overclocking is having no effect. I can say that there are definitely performance increases with the slider regardless of what the benchmarks say.
I did try UndeadK9's new rubix rom, so far I'm very impressed.

Imo there is nothing wrong with the stock rom. It has very few bugs and my phone scores 4650 on antutu. I was one of the first people to get the phone, online pre, and I got the anker battery. The new security update from tmo also gave me better 4g signal. I have only three gripes with the phone.
1. It doesn't run at 1.5ghz which it is fully capable of
2. You can't name homescreen folders
3. There is no true favorites
If you want the phone just to run cm7 vanilla don't buy the phone and get a newer gx2

AOSP Lockscreen Mod for GingerClone

I can't take credit for any of the work here, I just modded the framework-res.apk and twframework.apk so that I could use the standard Gingerbread sliding tab lockscreen on my favorite ROM GingerClone. Thanks goes out to the Platypus Dev Team and everyone else involved in making this. The KJ2 Locks Mod does in fact work on GingerClone AS WELL AS OTHER ROMS, but it replaces a large portion of the theming elements of the UI with the ones from Glorious Overdose. I fixed this by modding the frameworks.
Call me crazy, but I'm a big fan of the standard Gingerbread interface, even on my old phone running CM7, I used the standard theme.
***BUGS***
-- Landscape tabs don't match portrait tabs
The only thing I've noticed so far is that the landscape lockscreen tabs do not match the portrait lockscreen tabs, but since the phone screen needs to be OPEN and locked for you to ever see this screen it shouldn't be a big deal. I've torn through the res files and can't seem to find the landscape lock tabs, so unless they're not images and are actually hard coded, I can't figure out where they're at. Maybe the dev could point me in the right direction?
Once again, I can't take credit for ANY of this. I just modded the work created by other people.

Thanks man! So I'm assuming we have to flash this? And how are you getting a 2300+ score on quadrant? I tried tegrak and even at 1.1 it was freezing up my phone and doing the 1vib followed by 3vib when it didn't freeze it up.

try 1.2, that normally is pretty solid.
See I tried 1.2 but it froze even faster, and that's why I tried to downgrade to the 1.1
My q score suprised me too! First of all, it's the ROM. GingerClone is the only fully de-touchwized ROM available currently and it amazes me how well this device performs on a close to vanilla Android OS (especially for Froyo! I can only imagine that this phone would FLY with Gingerbread or ICS)
I OC'd using Tegrak to 1.125Ghz. Any higher and the system locks up on my phone regardless of ROM or kernel, but if I buy the full version of the app, I'm pretty sure I could get at least 1.4Ghz with overvolt. In the past I've noticed that especially refurbished phones can have issues with overclocking. My first LG Optimus could EASILY overclock up to 800+ Mhz stable, but I bricked it and the replacement they sent me was a refurb that couldn't handle more than 730Mhz and be stable.
But the real magic lies in using the latest version of V6 supercharger. I set mine to Aggressive 2. I had to run Quadrant a couple of times because I thought it was a glitch or a fluke the first time it broke 2000.

yeah, I forgot to mention that (figured it was self explanatory). You flash it in recovery.
I just flashed GingerCloneV2, I have not overclocked or supercharged, and my quadrant score was 2025. I ran it twice to be sure it wasnt a fluke. My phone has never even approached 2000 before. The highest score I have gotten prior to GC was 1695. This rom is crazy fast. Never would have imagined a rom based on kd1 could be this fast, considering the fact that supposedly kj2 is the most stable. I just flashed this, so I cant say if this rom is stable or not yet, but I hope it is. If it stays this fast AND its stable, then I wont even worry about overclock or supercharge.
yea same here, ran quadrant on stock gingerclone and got a 1950 and was like "whaaaaaat" its pretty awesome.
have tried supercharging it, with update 9 (and maybe thats where i'm going wrong), and after about an hour it begins to do the 1 buzz followed by 3 quickfire buzzes endlessly, and i'm forced to reinstall Gingerclone. do you guys think its because i should use update 8 for supercharger? its still blindingly fast though
edit: oh and i was wondering if there was some way to take that stupid "update social network" thing from the notification bar with this lockscreen mod? because it takes away the option under the display portion of the settings.
Thanks for the heads up on the lockscreen mod disabling the social status thing. Personally, I always left it on because when you turn it off you lose your power widgets in the drop down too. I know there are widgets that do the same thing, but aside from my launcher and the Google search widget I leave my desktop clean.
I'll have to look into the original framework from gingerclone and merge some of the code with the one from the lockscreen mod. I have some exams to study for this week, but I'll try to get around to it.

assuming you're running the free version of Tegrak which only changes CPU clock, for the majority of SK4G phones running at 1.2Ghz will actually result in a net loss in performance over 1.1Ghz. Without upping the voltage along with the clock speed, the processor actually begins to encounter errors.
I run into the same thing on my PC. I can safely overclock to 3.0Ghz, and I'm more than capable of overclocking to 3.2, but performance rapidly degrades any higher than 3.01 Ghz without overvolting. At 3.0Ghz, my Geekbench score is around 6500, whereas at 3.02 it falls to under 3000, and at 3.2 it's at about 1200 (if you've never used Geekbench it uses a baseline score of 1000 which is equal to a 2005 PowerMac G5 dual core, and doubling the score means doubling the performance).
If I bump the voltage up from 1.25 to 1.3v, I can overclock even higher than 3.2Ghz, but my computer doesn't have adequate cooling for that and it overheats within about 5 minutes.
So as you can see, faster clock speed doesn't necessarily equate to having a faster phone, the exact opposite can be true. Overvolting would most definitely result in a performance spike, but keep in mind that there IS NO COOLING on a cell phone, not even a heat sink. Excessive heat can very rapidly damage your phone or even break it. Another thing to consider is that not all silicon is created equal especially when you're talking about CPUs.
Look at Intel for example, they sell the EXACT SAME cpu set at different clock speeds as a Celeron, Core2duo and Core2Extreme based on how the individual chip performed on a bench test. This is why overclocking is actually possible. sometimes you get lucky with a well manufactured CPU, and sometimes you end up with a dud that can barely perform at the clock speed it's rated at.
