Default application forgotten on every boot / memory cache - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Hi Guys
I'm using Valhalla 1.1 (2.3.4) with KJ6 modem and KJ1 kernel.
Also using Adrenaline shot v12.
Since i got the Valhalla ROM i always had this problem where all default applications are forgotten on every boot / memory cache.
This really annoys me and last night i tried replacing kernel (from kh2 to kj1), i cleared Dalvik cache, cleared partition cache, rebooted and defined all applications defaults, returned to CWM and fixed permissions.
Still nothing !
I'm almost 99.999% sure it is caused by the ROM, but i have ~100 apps and everything is nandroid backed up, i don't have the will and strength to back it all up in Titanium and flash a new ROM, or perform a Factory Reset.
My question is, where are the applications defaults stored in the system ?
I think i will settle for forcing them into the system.
Other than that i have absolutely no problems with the ROM.
I will happily make the switch to a good MIUI port (now that we have the source code) or ICS port, but i realize it will take some months before that will happen.
Thanks,
Itzik.

Phone reboots-runtime reboot or soft reboot?

Hi all,
When I am browsing market then decide to press the back or home button. Sometimes my phone will reboot for no reason, this happens maybe 3/5 times when I'm browsing market. I'm running the bionix rom with 1.3ghz Trinity kernel. This happened while I was running bionic with 1.2 ghz Trinity kernel.
Thanks!

Does it happen specifically with the market? Or does it also happen with other apps too? Also, are there any other common factors among your random reboots (the colloquial term for what you are referring to)? My best advice would be to wipe your dalvik cache, cache, and data and then reflash the rom and kernel. Restore your apps the long way and see if that solves your problem.
(the reason I'd recommend this is that it sounds like there is an issue with your flash and a clean flash might clear that up)
Hey thanks for the fast reply, I actually went to clockwork and wipes every single option avaible except dalvick. Also it only seems to happen while closing or switching from market. I have not experienced the reboot during calls issue like other users. So if I do wipe Dalvick cache, does it uulnable root? Sorry, my first android phone here.

Its no problem man, everyone has "silly" questions when they start. =)
Basically, the Dalvik cache (found in advanced in Clockwork Recovery mod, aka CWM) is a list of things to boot. It speeds up the booting process but it also can cause issues during boot if there are conflicts between an old rom and a new one so wiping this is always good.
When you flash a new rom, you don't need to wipe everything, just wipe the Dalvik Cache (again found in the advanced section of CWM), Cache (found in mounts and storage and the actual action you'll be selecting will be "format cache"), and Data (found in mounts and storage and the actual action you'll be selecting will be "format data"). Once you do this flash your rom. Now if you're going to flash a kernel that you have never used before, I generally suggest allowing the phone to boot to make sure everything is fine, get myself all setup, to do a NANDroid backup before adding the kernel. That is my preference and is by no means necessary. Once you flash the kernel you can reboot and re-add your apps.
Now, I mentioned Titanium Backup and I'm still not sure you 100% know what that is so let me explain (as it is a very useful tool). It is a program that backs up your applications all with their data (IE preferences and the like). It does a great job (with the one exception that due to the way Android is built it cannot restore widgets) but it does require some work so it gets tedious when you have to use it a lot. I generally only use it the first time I'm flashing a new ROM. If you want to have a variety of roms you can easily access and switch between here is something I posted in another thread that can make it very, very easy to do:
kenvan19 said:
For reference to the OP, this is what I do. When I see a new rom I want to try I do a backup through Rom manager (it allows you to name Backups rather than just have a date/timestamp). Then I do a titanium back up of all my apps. Next I flash the rom and/or kernel I want to try and then do a titanium restore of my apps, get everything set up how I like it and then immediately do another NANDroid backup through Rom manager.
Right now I have these backups on my phone:
StockWapps (Stock rom, stock kernel, rooted, with apps set up)
CM7apps (CM7 rom, standard CM7 kernel, rooted, with apps set up)
CM714apps (CM7 rom, trinity 1.4GHz OC kernel, rooted, with apps set up)
Bionixapps (Bionix rom, standard bionix kernel, rooted, with apps set up)
Bionix13apps (Bionix rom, trinity 1.3GHz OC kernel, rooted, with apps set up)
Bionix14apps (Bionix rom, trinity 1.4GHz OC kernel, rooted, with apps set up)
On my wife's:
StockWapps (Stock rom, stock kernel, rooted, with apps set up)
CM7apps (CM7 rom, standard CM7 kernel, rooted, with apps set up)
BionixZuneApps (Bionix rom, standard bionix kernel, ZuneEvo theme, rooted, with apps set up)
If you see the pattern its basically ROMThemeKernelApps for easy reference when restoring. Its so simple that I told my wife this morning to put her phone back to stock and she was able to figure it out with only minimal help getting to the right screen (she is a complete techNOTphile)
Also, I have a backup on my computer of all of the backups. Unlike Simms, I only do backups when I make significant changes to apps, themes etc (by significant I include changing a shortcut on my launcherpro dock lol).

Woah thanks. I really don't mind not backing up haha. So I did what you said and wiped cache/data and dalvik but this time I used stock kernel with bionix. The problem I have now is that the rom manager bundled with bionix says I don't have clockwork installed and when I try to install from there, it just hangs and I have to force close, not a big deal but I can't even backup I guess.

Hmm. Try this: turn off your phone and then once its off hold the volume up button and then press the power. This should boot you into the bootloader. Now using the volume rocker to scroll and the power button to select, select recovery. Let it boot into that then tell me what color the text is in recovery.

Hey Kenvan,
Thanks for the help, I decided to revert back in to stock Android with no root and I have stopped having problems with anything! I also do not experience the rebooting during calls bug.
Thanks!

[Q]Home button not functioning

As posted in the gummy thread, I am experiencing my home button not functioning. Good news i narrowed it down. My roms are good and when fresh the home button operates normally. I have been up and down flashing left and right between GB and Froyo and the roms that overlay them. Titanium backup is the issue, or rather me backing up. yesterday I flashed to EE4 Eclipse pbj coming from GB NAMELESS Eclipse. I restored and that's where the problem showed. My dock went to just applications and none of my buttons worked except for holding power button. I booted to CWM and cleaned cache and wiped, i was left with a working fresh rom.... So now i have the same problem again when restored system i lost my home button, I filtered the restoration files too, only did contacts, mms and things along that line... My question what is the bad restore that i'm doing and how can i fix my current bad restore without losing everything?
thanks Jeff
I noticed that issue with earlier versions of nameless. perhaps it is something with that.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using Tapatalk
although currently i'm not running nameless maybe it autobackuped up part of the system when NAMELESS was on my device. Restoring must change a file that isn't compatible with other kernels. If only i could pinpoint the restoration file that does it and get a fake file to replace it
So randomly after 2 manual starts I lost all the launcher icons and no longer have a lock screen. This occurred after I installed a boot animation app. changed my logo, execpt I restarted once and everything was intact. The second restart was where problems arises. Tomorrow im wiping and restoring apps only. Thanks for the help nitro

Simple solution. Don't restore system data. Restoring system data can play havoc with your device when coming from and to different roms. Think about it, some of those system settings you are trying to restore might not even exist on another rom. Stick to restoring user apps, and select user app data, and then get practiced in redoing system settings after a wipe. You'll get used to it doing this over and over. It takes me only 20-30 minutes to go from completely wiped back to my usual setup.
Remember, when restoring data, less is more.
Yep thays what I was thinking. Purchased titanium pro now im back after factory reset not flash

phone corruption, crashes

Something got corrupted on my phone. Most of the important things on my phone won't launch or stay opened such as:
*contacts
*phone
*sms
I have a red triangle on my status bar that says "Unexpected error" . When I click on it it doesn't display anything. Sometimes it will quickly display some type of error from the "go SMS" app before closing.
I repeatedly get notification boxes that tell me android process have stopped. They include:
*android.process.acore
*com.android.mms
*com.android.email
I've tried restarting, battery pulling, and uninstalling a lot of apps but nothing helps. I even reinstalled my kernel and ROM with no improvements.
My theory is that the last text message i received clobbered something in memory. I have been trying to find out where the text messages are stored on my phone so i can delete them and see if that solves the problem.
Anyone got any ideas?
I'm using:
1) EE4 Debloated V4.2.1 Froyo kernel -- PeanutButta Jelly - 7.30.11
2) ee4 debloated v4.2.1 Froyo Rom - 6.10.11
3) Clockwork Mod Recovery imNuts - 7.30.11

My suggestion is to just flash the ee4 debloated rom right over what you have. Wipe cache and dalvik cache and don't worry about data so you don't lose your data. Also if the kernel you are on is the pbj voodoo kernel then flash kernel in same session in the recovery so you remain on ext4. Otherwise it won't boot

I already reflashed the ROM with no luck.
Is the cache clearing and dalvik cache clearing available in the Clockwork Recovery screen?
I don't understand what you are saying about the ext4 session. I need to flash the pbj kernel in the same session as what? When i reflash the rom or when i clear the caches? Maybe you can rephrase.
I am currently using the ext4 filesystem.
Big fat fail. Neither clearing the dalvik cache nor the regular cache helped.
Factory wiping phone seems to be the only thing that worked.
I would try backing up all important info like pics, documents, things of that nature and putting them on a computer and then odin back to factory and start all over again. I constantly get process.acore FC's all the time (especially on the car dock and charge base) so I may end up doing the same.

I had similar problem that started in my contacts database when I was running a similar configuration as you. The factory wipe worked for about a week. Ended up going to stock and then rerooting to get stable.

Been running for a month with no issues. Factory wiping fixed whatever was wrong.
Try disabling voodoo, and flashing.. Either ee4 with pit or ed1 with pit.. If that doesn't work.. Swap sim cards.. PS.. Any time you use odin remove sim card

[Q] cm7 gps, other issues

Rooted my Sensation 4G with this tutorial - http://www.androidunite.com/2011/10/07/how-to-gain-s-off-and-root-the-sensation-4g/#comment-3770
Used teamwin recovery. Installed cm7, now my GPS doesn't work. Google and forum search is all over the place on this. Need some help please.
Also, keep getting a FC error for Google apps framework or something.
Tried wipe cache, wipe Delvik Cache, and wiped google contacts app and framwork app. still getting it. Could use some help with that also.
Lastly, if I get these working or not, I would like to try a diff ROM, like miui...do I have to wipe everytime i flash a new rom, and restore data apps etc. or can I just boot to recovery from CM7, and then flash a new ROM?
I don't know much about cm7 so its probably best to check the cm7 bible in the dev forum. In the past i have had little niggling problems with a newly flashed rom, internal storage maxed out or mms wouldn't send, and usually reflashing the rom fixes it. Not always but most of the time.
Before flashing any new rom it is always best to wipe before flashing a new one. Backup your apps with something like titanium and restore then once your new rom has had time to settle. If you don't wipe, settings from the old rom could interfere with the new one. Whatever you use to backup your apps, don't restore the backup data. This could also interfere with your new rom.
Hope this helps a little.

Legend 3 ICS Edition Update

Hi there. I currently am running the Legend 2 ICS Edition ROM for Infuse 4G. I just noticed there is a new update Legend 3 ICS. If I want to keep all my files and apps, do I just flash the Update file (instead of the Full Wipe file)? And do I need to go through the same process, clear cache, dalvik cache, etc.? Probably no need to wipe data and factory reset.
Any help is much appreciated! Thanks.

I suggest do a full wipe, if you want to keep your app, "tibu" titanium backup is great and well worth app, buy it...I did and worth every dime. IMHO Tibu will and can backup your apps and restore them.
So I suggest get tibu, backup your apps, do a full wipe install Leg3 go back to Gplay download/install tibu back on, then use the program to restore your apps only in this case.
Plus tibu can do a full backup of your data & apps, say you find your DD but want to test other ROMs, use tibu to backup data & apps, go test the another ROM, and want to come back to your DD ROM, you can then do a full data & app restore...plus there are lots of YouTube vid on Titanium Backup app.

You can do the update and keep your files, which is the reason for the update. Though, like Bigjoe says, a full wipe is always prefered, but not necessary.

The reason why everyone suggests a full wipe is so that you dont potentially run into any problems after the flash. ie flash not working, or camera wont load... little things like that that make it hard to narrow down problems. One of the main things people are going to ask is did you wipe before you installed? It helps to eliminate and remnants of left over roms so that you dont have any issues with the new rom. Its called a Bad flash.
I hope i answered your question!
Thanks for all the replies! So whether it is the full wipe ROM or the update ROM, both go through the same procedure of booting into CWM first? I will try Tibu for app backup! :good:

Try doing an odin or hemdall back to stock with partitioning, then flash the full wipe rom.

So I've been using your latest release (full wipe Legend v3) and I did factory reset, clear cache and dalvik cache, fixed permissions, etc. The phone is occasionally laggy now, usually when I open web browser it would stay on the white screen a several seconds. Sometimes, when I open my phone, it would stay on the black screen even though I never turned it off and it still has battery. So I had to long-press the button to restart. I've already rebooted and shut down numerous times but these problems still persist.
Also, bluetooth doesn't work for me. When I enable it from settings, the "Turn bluetooth on" checkbox stays unchecked and does nothing.
Should I reflash again? I did to a Titanium Backup to restore apps and settings... Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

With any rom, you should be able to install More Locale 2 from the Play Store to get support for Turkish (and many other languages).

My bet is the tibu restore of your settings is what is causing the issues, I've had problems and have known others that had problems when restoring system settings with tibu, especially if the tibu backups were done on another rom.

I only started using tibu when I had Legend ICS v2 and then I immediately upgraded to v3 using the full wipe ROM. And then I restored all apps and settings. I'll try wipe and re-flash without restoring any settings in tibu. But honestly, I only wanted to backup my widget and screen settings (such as app shortcuts on home screens) but tibu didn't back that up.

I'm a noob so I don't know what those are. But I've only flashed ZEUS final and then Legend ICS v2 and v3. Full wiped and cleared cache on all those flashes.
I've reflashed to stock and then back to Legend 3 without restoring anything. It is all better now, very snappy. The bluetooth can be turned on now but for some reason, it doesn't detect my Jabra headset no matter how many times I scan. But it detects my Macbook Pro...
