Well, ive been having signal/call quality problems and a broken speakerphone so I decided to exchange the phone for a brand new one.
On this new phone the speakerphone still doesn't work (the other person can't make out what im saying at all). Both phones have had this same problem, why does HTC not fix this?
By dialing *#*#4636#*#* I have switched the network to edge only and now get 3 bars instead of 1 in my house. Im hoping this fixes the call quality problem Im having.
Depending on how my call quality is over the next week, I may go back and see if I can pay the difference and get an Atrix.
Tell them you're having signal issues @ home and you'd like one of the microcells. That will alleviate your signal issue while there. The speaker phone, I dunno, mine has worked just fine on both of my Inspires.

Ive read different reviews and it seems very hit or miss as to whether or not they will give you one for free or charge $100-$150. Do you have any experience with it?
Called ATT, they sent updates to my phone supposedly, I seem to be maybe getting 1 more bar in H+ but not consistently. He told me to call a store and tell them you're having problem and ask about the microcell. Would be nice to get that for free, but still bummed about my speakerphone.
if you've only got one bar of signal, it could be the reason your call quality could be so low- may not be much an issue with speakerphone at all... does the other side hear you without trouble when using a headset or the phone itself?
and i'd assume you're using the stock rom that at&t ships- maybe you could install the volume+ app and tweak your speakerphone settings?
Which setting cuz for me it just yes back to hspda

The speakerphone doesn't work even when I have 3-5 bars. I will be talking to them fine, and then once its on speaker they say "what what, i cant really hear you" and then once i take speaker off they can hear me fine. Both stock phones have been like this? I will check out the volume+ app

speakerphone TERRIBLE
I have also had major problems with the speakerphone on my phone since I bought it. I think I am right around the 30 day return point, but I have been to lazy to return it to stock and take it back. Not sure if it is a hardware problem or if the phone is just like this. I asked my friend who has the same phone, and he said he didn't notice a problem.
It's like the mic input is way too sensitive, so when I put someone on speakerphone whatever they say gets looped back into the mic and echos VERY loudly back to them. Absolutely impossible to have a conversation with speakerphone on which is very annoying because I prefer it most of the time.
I can also notice that the problem exists when I use Soundhound. I can play a song at an extremely low volume and the input meter on Soundhound is always completely maxed out. If the song is at a normal volume, it often won't be able to detect which sound it is because it must be coming in too loudly. So I have to turn the volume way down and try again.
Is this not a normal thing on the HTC Inspire? Has no one noticed this? Or am I having some sort of hardware problem?
Can anyone think of a way to fix it, such as a mic input level adjust?
Thanks.
I exchanged my phone 3 times at ATT because of cell signal and call quality to later find out they are working on the towers in my area - so they say. I had 3-4 bars of service about 2 months ago and now i'm down to 1-2.
In the end, I threatened to switch to verizon and ended up walking out of the store with a free microcell. - I've also been on a ATT Premier Business Acct. for the past 5 years - so that might of helped.
Call quality on the Microcell is superb. Some of my text messages don't want to go out the first time and I have to resend but other then that its pretty good.

- Also, depending on your ROM, Radio, RIL combination - you may have the wrong Radio for the ROM you are using. I had a few different ROMS installed and the radio provided clear call quality on my end but on receiving end they stated that there was a echo. I switched radios and flashed the appropriate RIL and the problem went away.

The mic for the speaker phone is on the back.. when you use the speakerphone, you have to talk to the back of your phone.. not the bottom.. if you talk to the bottom mic they wont be able to hear you. This has been talked about on these boards countless times. search
I came from a Droid X and ever since I've had my charge one thing has annoyed the tar out of me: how hard it is to hear people and how often people tell me it sounds like I'm speaking through a tin can. Is this just me and should I take it back to Verizon and get a different one?
My fiancée has a charge as well and when she calls me (her voice quality is noticeably worse than other people) it's almost unbearable to talk to her. It's like listening to someone talk over a tin can through an earmuff...when coupled with my already bad overall sound quality.
Any input would be grand. My return policy expires in two days and I want to make sure if it's just me I have time to get a replacement.

Some information would be great. Like.
Where are you located.
How far is your nearest tower.
What changes have you made to the handsets.
Were the handsets updated to EE4 or are you still running ED2 and awaiting the update.
Where did you purchase the handsets. Have you tried talking to the seller to see if others have had the same problem.
These answers will help in trying to help you with your problem
Thank you in advance,
Dragon Stalker
Not sure how close our local tower is, we live in Bloomington, IN. which is a pretty large college town so reception shouldn't be an issue. We're both running EE4 and the handsets were purchased new at the Verizon wireless store, not a 3rd party vendor.
From day one I noticed people told me I sounded muffled and I noticed, in turn many calls I received I struggled to hear due to either the incoming caller's sound be wretched or the earpiece just wouldn't go up any higher to hear clearly.
I haven't asked Verizon yet if it's a common problem, figured I'd get some input on here first to see if it's just me or if others share my plight.

Ok cool. Check your pm.
This is my second charge and ive had the sane problem. Talking on this thing is nearly impossible. The handsrt speaker cracks and pops if the volume is above half. Im actually contemplating returning it for another phone. I actually love the phone but the voice quality while talking is horrendous. I haven't seen a fix for it either. Drops way more calls than my DX ever did.

For those who already have a One S, do you also have a contact noise in the background when you're talking to someone on the phone?
It gets louder if you turn up the volume and it is pretty annoying. Am I the only one having this problem?
What could be the reasons for this?

In comparison to my hd2 it has a better battery life. I would say about 6-8 h online time. The only disturbing thing I found so far is the noise when calling someone.
The processor is devilishly good, everything is smooth and fast. Also it fits perfect in the hand, not too big and not too small either.

6-8 hours immense browsing with the phone. After that I have to recharge the battery, but not sure yet.
After 15 hours (about 30 mins using internet, most of this time in standby) I still got 75% of battery life.
I have 53% battery life after 24h not charging.
I used it for some surfing, sync, whatsapp, facebook and some other apps most time in wlan. 8h was completely standby, the rest was a mix of using and standby.
My first impression is, that the battery has an acceptable life.
That seems to be decent, though I do wonder how it'll be once it's all settled in, but back on topic. Do you still get that sound while using the headset or a bluetooth? Related to this, but is it just you or does the other person hear it, it might be the mic (or does the One S have a dual mic setup?) backfeeding or something like that.

I have this problem too. It also feels like there are sometimes kind of interruptions in the conversation.
Haven't had a call yet...if the issue is there I hope it is a software bug. That can be fixed easily. I also hope they will get rid of that ugly on screen menu button and bring the htc sense blur live wallpaper back!
And the flip clock should always flip and not occasionally.
I received my replacement one s due to call quality issues and the new one is even worse. everyone says i sound like im in a tin can as my voice is SUPER muffled. they can hear when i start and stop talking but the words just arent sharp enough to hear anything. wtf is going on with this phone?
This can be operator issue.
Yup I've had that too. I get it about every time that I call a new number. Completely muffled and can't hear other side. But that might just be me sincevI'm convinced that my phone is completely defective.
I've noticed that my phone lags in basic tasks that even my mytouch 4G handled smoothly. It'll even freeze halfway through a song quite often. Not sure what's going on but I've had major performance problems with my One S even after a full reboot.
My battery dies in about 10 hours of mostly being on standby. I go to school so I listen to music for about a total time of an hour and half throughout the day.
I turn my Internet off, wifi off and Google location services off and still the same result.
Battery settings says it's mostly using the screen even though it's off for about 85% of my use... Anyone else?

I migrated over from a mt4g as well. The call quality on that thing was perfect. You might want to try and do an exchange on your one s because mine doesnt hang on basic tasks and ive been really surprised by the battery life in comparison to my mt4g. With some moderate morning use (some games, surfing, app downloads) and then forgetting to charge it afterwards my phone lasts on stand by from 9pm to 1pm the next day with some charge still left over. it sorta lags a tiny bit but nothing to complain about. the only game ive really played on it is temple run and it seems to glitch in the beginning a few times by freezing and continuing the game but it sort of fixes itself? My screen, like yours, is apparently always the culprit for battery time even though i have it set to auto brightness and have it so it turns off in 30 seconds.
the call quality is what i can't handle. this phone is great but if i can't make a phone call whats the point!? i'll be getting my 3rd replacement on monday =/
3rd? Wow. I had about 17 exchanges on the mytouch 4G (no joke) and was hoping that I wouldn't have to go through any on this phone. Was there anything special that you did with the phone? (ie charge before 1st use?). I'll probably just tell Tmo about the call quality and lag for them to exchange it. I hate that they won't take battery probs seriously and ask you to do a factory reset.

!! You sound like me. I lost count on how many returns I did on my mytouch4g. In fact... that's how I got my one s.
I b*tched and had so many returns they offered me whatever android I wanted (after threatening to cancel and not pay them sh*t and getting into an argument with their "customer loyalty" department when she tried to "upgrade" me by sending me a sidekick -_-) for free... so I waited until the release date of the one s and ordered it =3
Even though nothing too special must be done with these phones batteries I still let it get an entire charge before I started to play with it. The phone is perfect in every way and I honestly had no complaints until everyone I spoke to told me I sounded like I was muffled =/
My first phone - Everyone could hear me fine, i couldn't really hear them...everything was high pitched and muddy and buzzy sounding for me and it actually hurt my ears to talk to anyone
My second phone - The complete reverse. I can hear everyone fine but no one can hear me.
My third phone - I'll let you know... I'm stuck at work but I'll find out tonight.
(i still haven't sent any of my phones back in case todays phone is even worse.)
They don't take anything seriously -_- every time i call them I'm prepped for the argument because they never know wtf they're talking about. I always had to tell them "HEY...This is my 20th mytouch...CHECK MY ACCOUNT...(by then they just sit silently when they see i'm not lying)... i'm PRETTY SURE i know how to trouble shoot and reset my phone, no there isn't any water damage, so stop wasting my time and send me another phone so we can both get back to whatever the hell it was we were doing >_<" all of my rage.
EDIT:
Received my phone and the call quality isn't 100% but its SUCH an improvement from my other two devices. I'm keeping this one. It'll do. I can hear everyone (not as great as on my mytouch4g) fairly well without any muffled sounds and they can actually understand everything I'm saying. Finally! Definitely try and return your OneS.... i know it's a pain in the ass but it's worth it in the end =/

Haha yup I was offered a sidekick too! I will never know how in the world they find a sidekick a "comparable model" to the mytouch4g and not a Galaxy S 4g at least.
I called about an hour ago, they said my replacement will arrive on Wednesday. They charged me a $5 fee though. I'll definitely charge that one for at least 8 hours and hopefully get more than 4 hours of heavy use out of it.

Well I got my replacement Wednesday. Charged it for 13 hours and still have insanely weak battery life. Apart from that, my phone rebooted once while on my pocket and being unused. Then it was lagging during browser use and rebooted again. I'm pretty ticked off considering my mytouch experience with T-Mobile and HTC. At this point I might just return the phone, reverse my upgrade and cancel in November when my contract is up and I could get a good black Friday deal on whatever new iPhone Apple offers by then.

here is all i did, and no improvement until last step.
1. tried different radios. 1.13 and 1.15 and reflashing 1.20, no improvement
2. installed ElementalX 6.1 kernel and nothing
3. tried In-Call Quality Fix for Sense 5 here > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2482089
4. finally i tried flashing phone.apk from here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=46945481&postcount=1844
after 2 days, it seems the problem is solved.
So i picked up the Maxx HD over the weekend. Loved the phone but the call volume even on the highest setting was quiet. Is anyone else having issues with this? I saw it mentioned on a few reviews but not on everyone. I ended up returning it and going back to my S3. Opinions
My wife keeps telling me i'm a little muffled and i guess it is kinda quiet as well.
I was also being told i was muffled. Hmmm
Sucks cause I really liked the hardware
Mine is loud and clear- almost too loud at times. The network could have an affect on call quality/volume at times as well.

I have this issue as well. A lot of people have asked me to repeat what I am saying. I did not have this issue on my last phone, the droid charge. I have turned off the voice privacy setting and it seemed to have helped a little bit, however I also have been consciously trying to speak louder and hold the phone closer to my mouth. I went into the Verizon store shortly after buying the phone and the sales man denied it. He let me listen myself from his phone and the signal sounded cloudy to me
Had the phone since it came out and not once had these issues with the call volume or muffled sound. Its actually loud and clear for me.
If I hold my phone it is crystal clear
If I use my shoulder to talk I get that muffled response from people
Otherwise its a solid phone...just annoying it does that

Yes, I'm one of the people that think the max call volume on the HD isn't as loud as some other phones, but still loud enough.
For example, on the HD I had the call volume set on 6/7, but the Galaxy S III on 4/7 was the same volume. Turing the GS3 up all the way is way louder than I need.

Just picked up my HD and having the same issue. Is there a fix for this without root? I know with my previous phones there was a tweak

When you call granny, does she keep saying "Huh?! Wut?!" or does the conversation flow pretty well? Rate this thread to express how you feel about the Moto G5 Plus's call quality. A higher rating indicates that calls are clear and crisp, and that regardless of background noise, you can hear the other party clearly (and with ample volume) and they can hear you.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
As for me noise cancellation works correctly, sound is clear enough
The worst call quality in Moto G5. I can hardly hear the other person on the phone. I have to the phone in speaker for listening. Pathetic phone. My first and last Moto Phone. Will sell this phone whenever I get better price.

Better than my previous phone.... Its as clear as it can be
I hear a lot of reviewers and users complaining of low call volume. Personally I don't what they're talking about, all calls I've made and received have been clear plenty loud enough to hear over any background noise. Excellent call quality and reception, better signal strength than my wife's S8+.
Sent from my Moto G (5) Plus using Tapatalk
For me there is this call quality issue too. It is worst when putting the phone between head and shoulder. It is no issue using the speaker.
Another related issue might be, when I try to use the Google Assistant while driving. I was using e.g. "Ok Google, what is my next turn". This only works with my G5+ having the engine switched off. As soon as there is background noise the voice commands get not detected.
My guess is a quite bad microphone.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
There are issues with call quality, even after the software patch. My call recipients have been very frequently complaining about the terrible audio quality(a faulty noise cancellation system/ mediocre mic).
If this issue doesn't go away with next update, its definitely a hardware problem. I'll hold my decision till then :|
I received my new G5 Plus yesterday. I've made a couple of calls on it using the bluetooth in my car (2015 Subaru WRX) and I was heard loud and clear. On my end, however, audio was very low and it was difficult to hear the conversation. I had to turn the car radio all the way up which resulted in the radio blasting when finished with the call. Listening to voicemail on the handset, the audio does seem low.

This right here, I always do this and as soon as I do it people tell me they can barely hear me. I did try HD voice for the first time the other day since I switched to Verizon and that sounded like perfection though.
Don't know if you're still soliciting comments on call quality - but I have an interesting perspective. I've had the G5 plus since May of 2017. It's been great. Call quality was clear in both directions, in speakerphone or regular mode. Speaker volume for media (YT, Pandora, etc) was more than adequate. Then, about a week ago, it thought it was hooked up to charger when it wasn't, and wouldn't charge properly. I did an advanced warranty exchange through Moto, and the new one arrived on Monday.
The original phone never went above -35 firmware. This new one arrived with -83. The new one is still plenty loud with media content - but horrendous with in-call volumes. The speakerphone is barely louder than on regular mode. And that's with the volume turned up all the way. I'm calling Moto tomorrow to get this exchanged.
FWIW, both phones were rooted day one - using the same approach. I will relock and flash and unrooted stock image back to the phone tomorrow to verify that this isn't a kernel issue - and I suspect it isn't.
TL;DR - there may be legitimate hardware differences between the same model G5 Plus (RETUS) phones. That may account for why some complain about the issue and others have never seen a problem.
------------
Well, several hours later, after rolling back to 35 and bone stock, I had FULL volume on this new replacement phone. I've rooted it, and added my apps, and the volume has remained full, both speakerphone and earpiece. So I don't think it's hardware.
I'm downloading -83 and will apply that tomorrow to see if that's where the problem returns. Will post results here.
And to add on to my last post - after flashing the latest (.83) stock firmware, the speakerphone is hosed again. This is with a locked bootloader/unrooted clean image. Went back to .35 and speaker works again. I think Moto has a bug in their .83 software.

Nice too see someone doing some correct diagnosis, sadly the chances of Motorola reading this are zero.
Just to add, my uk G5plus has also never had volume issues, but then we seem to be the last place to get any updates, only had august update a month.

The worst call quality in Moto G5. I can hardly hear the other person on the phone. I have to the phone in speaker for listening. Pathetic phone. My first and last Moto Phone. Will sell this phone whenever I get better price.

Will u tell pls, Where from j bought the phone & what's ur exact model no XT-16xx?
Its a real dealbreaker that with so many awesome PIE custom ROMs around with their awesome kernels with all the goodness of Gcam ports and awesome battery lives, the only bummer seems to be the in-call volume in the custom ROMs. Also, any MP3 played in any music player just is not loud enough as stock. Just because of this reason, I have decided to go Stock until that issue is resolved in the custom ROMs. All the developers "claim" that their ROMs have the Oreo firmware. My question is that is not the sound part of the firmware? How can they screw up that basic function when upgrading all the other cosmetics with kernels and all? A terrible workaround for this issue in the custom ROMs that I have heard is to "use Viper4android" or some other stuff to correct the audio.
Call quality is very poor on AT&T, mostly because of AT&T's lack of support for this device. Thing is, I bought this device for it's advanced features, which I have not been able to take advantage of to this day. I've been trying since day one of buying this device to get them to support wifi calling, HD voice, and VOLTE features on this device. The VOLTE is the worst, because when I'm on a phone call, it automatically downgrades my internet and/or mobile hotspot to HSPA+.
Sadly, AT&T only seems to care about supporting devices that are purchased directly through ATT these days. It is disappointing since when I first purchased this device, I was using a Tmobile Pre-paid SIM card and those features worked fine on there. Truth is, that is why I'm on XDA forums being active again, hoping to maybe find a solution to my problem here since AT&T support can't help me at all.
I've used Moto g 2013 and 2nd gen before. The call quality on those were excellent especially in the 2nd gen. I can't say the same about g5 plus tho. On a quiet place, the call quality is okay but it becomes hard to understand what's being said from the other side even in a mildly crowded place.
