I cant help but notice, after trying 4 or 5 different ROMs that are on here, they are all basically the same, just with a few different programs missing from some and included in others. Has no one made a ROM that is different or interesting - i'm sick of looking at the HTC Black theme with the HTC Home screen

So change the home screen and change the theme. Better yet, you could cook a rom yourself if you're unhappy instead of starting another pointless thread.

Then change your theme and home screen, my friend!
Well while the roms may seem similar, some are much faster and more stable than others.
As for your other point, the beauty of windows mobile is that you can do whatever you please with it by simply installing cabs. Don't like HTC Home? Remove it and replace it. Sick of the HTC black theme? Change it. By simply searching on google, you can find thousands of windows mobile themes.
If you want your phone to be really unique and interesting, you can't count on different roms. The rom chefs make a good base rom for you, it is up to you to personalize it.
You could always try any of these things to help sproose your phone up.

If all roms are the same, why have you bothered flashing new ones? Obviously your original shipped rom is as good as those offered here because "... they are all basically the same" - so why not flash back to the original and stop creating pointless threads.
The reason you (and we) flash new roms is because of the subtle differences - some faster, some more stable, some better looking without tweaks, maybe also because only ONE component is better etc etc.
As for no one making a rom that is "different or interesting" - I find them all different AND interesting. I'm also trying to learn how to cook my own by extracting or adding the components that I like best - if I come up with Rom Utopia I'll post it here - but I won't find this Utopia until I try all the other roms and extract the best bits.
In summary - flash if you want to or don't bother if they are all the same anyway, but stop posting useless junk, and stop criticising the work of others until you are in a position to be their peer.
This thread so doesn't belong in this forum.

Paulmezza, you have the beginnings of a valid point here, but you haven't finished it. What would you like to see in a ROM that would make it stand out from the crowd? There are some great programs and customisations out there, why not make a list of what you'd like to see in a ROM, and then post it. As other people have pointed out, we're only limited by the core Windows Mobile OS itself, everything else on the phone can be customized and tweaked. Post what you'd like to see and you might inspire a budding chef to build some of your ideas in - or you can take the plunge and cook it yourself!
There are some many applications out there that you can use to mod your phone to make it special. Go check out handango.com or somewhere else to find what your looking for. or Google UI's for your phone. The only things making your device generic is you.

i agree with u it would be good if cooks did have major changes between their roms, i wanted to try and cook my own a t-mobile themed wm 6.1 rom but too complicated and i have no time cose busy with school since its the final year. No need to attack this guy for this its just his and my opinion, some days im sitting here looking at the detail of the roms see if there is anything to attract me to a certain rom end up basicly throwing a dart of a board with their names pinned onto it.
Mods please close this pointless thread......
its not all that point less whats wrong with a little criticism? i mean i like the work of the cooks im not saying i hate to roms juts variety would be good as well.

What he stated in his post was that quote:
"Has no one made a ROM that is different or interesting - i'm sick of looking at the HTC Black theme with the HTC Home screen"
So the problem for him is the fact that they all look the same, not that there are subtle differences between them. So like others have already said, if someone does not like the look of a Rom, go ahead & change the appearance! Take the time to learn how to use RLToday, Ultimate Launcher, WAD and the whole slew of other Today Plugins and Customization apps that are out there. Its not really the chefs job to supply the eye candy, thats where individual taste comes in. Their main goal is cooking up a fast stable rom.
Part of the problem lies with the end user...
Before selecting a Rom do you really know what you want out of your device?
I for one decided that as Applications are bound to change and what I want to do with my device is equally varied I would be better off the what's known as a "Clean" Rom.
So when I cook Roms that is what I make. I remove everything except the Core OS. then I add in registry settings that I prefer such as cache settings, at&t keyboard layout, etc.
Then I take all of the extracted applicatons and build cab files for them (unless I find someone else has already done a good job of this) and I collect those cab files into one place to share with everyone.
So with my XDA Live Rom what I've ended-up with is exactly the applications I choose to use with the max amount of free storage space. The effect is that I don't put any cache files/e-mail attachements on my storage card so I can safely use it when connected to my PC(s) via Card Export II.
Like anything in this universe, cooked roms are only what you make of them...

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU PAULMEZZA. This is BS and I'm sick of it too.
Now please excuse me as I watch 700 channels of HD TV with my mind scanning remote control and automatic potatoe chip feeder...
a lot of cooks want to accomodate for the majority out there. Some cooks made a couple themes for theres and they put in a lot of hard work changing every bit of icon on the rom. If you are looking for something totally different, try some third party software to change up your desktop. There is this you can look at.

the one thing i could imagine right now: i like the possibility to change the

to get the latest and the best
HTC takes so much of time releasing the official updates
so if you want the latest you have to depend on custom ROMs
and you can even get stuff which is not meant for your phone
like touch flo,manila interface etc

manila is just like a "codename" for touchflo!?
anyway... so if there is a bug or something like that and htc takes month
to release updates, the xda-devs come and create their own roms.. or if
someone would find out that the hd actually has everything hardware-
related whats needed for tv-out, he could make a rom that supports that?
and a rom is always specific to one model of a device?!? you cant use a
kayser*-rom for eg a diamond, can you?

Well for example by removing things from a rom you don't use, you can make your phone faster or have more memory.
Sometimes program such as manilla run better or faster when they are built into a rom.
Flashing a new rom means that if you hard reset, you will reset back to the rom you flash.
You can put new program and or drivers stripped from another phone (omnia, opal, ect) (this would be useful beacuse they may be newer and more improved)
Its all a matter of opinion on what you want to do with your phone, if you need help with something you are trying to get you need to giver us an example so that we can give you an example of pluses and draw backs. (there are alot of things it does and its hard to just list them)
well, thank u very much. i think i get it now. somehow like n-lite for desktop windows. but still it would be nice to have a list in the wiki with all roms, their compatibilites and main features...

I think the variations between ROM's are overrated. To me they are pretty much the same unless you are crazy about details.
1) Sometimes your phone comes with bloatware, software that comes pre-installed on your phone. Depending on who you are you would think that this bloatware is annoying crap. You might want to get rid of it forever.
2) You see...even if you uninstall these bloatware, the installation files (.cabs) can still be found or stored in your phone's internal memory (the ROM). This takes up alot of space in your phone because you are not allowed to delete these files or cabs from your phone. See...this is still an issue because most phones have internal memories smaller than 400 megabytes and internal storage get's used up quickly.
3) It is best to install programs in the internal memory (the ROM) because the software will not be very buggy. I have installed software on my storage card before, and I tell you this: I advise you not to. Basically, if you are a user who installs dozens and dozens of applications on your phone than you should flash (install) a ROM that has little or no bloatware.
4) Some ROMs not only include bloatware, but they include demo music files and demo video files. If these files are stamped into your ROM's memory, then you do not have permission to delete this crap. Therefore you need to flash a different ROM that has as little filler as possible
5) Some ROM's contain software that was never included with your phone: for example... Touch Flo 3D ... Touch Wiz (not ported yet) ... or Windows Mobile 6.5 Software/Plugins
If you crave for Touch Flo 3D, then flash it. If you crave for Touch Flo 3D without a lot of bloatware from the developer, then you have to look for it. If you crave for a Touch Flo 3G with a lot of applications (that you consider beneficial instead of bloatware) then get it.

I don't want to come out as needy and disrespectful. This is just a request.
Can anyone creat a custome ROM that is as close to stock as possible?
With a few exceptions. Of course remove all the bloat ware, creat a new status bar by removing the t-mobile logo that waists space and the previously used apps (we all know how to hold the home button), and lastly make a numeric battery. Try not to use the circle batterys but stay as close to the original as possible.
Ooh as well fix sence 3.0 and have lockscreen icons.
Also I do use the caller I'd feature T-Mobile provides I don't want $4 down the drain so.please keep that function.

if I ever get some free time (not likely in the next 2 weeks) I will start cooking up some roms for us. I'm in the middle of a big transition right now and just haven't had time to sit down and start tearing roms apart. -____-
op: have you checked out the UOT kitchen? you can accomplish most of the status bar and battery tweaks you want through it.
the bloatware I would just uninstall with TiBu or any other program capable of uninstalling system apps.

No rush guys this phone isn't going anywhere. I would love to learn how to cook. I need to get over the big learning curve. The only reasone I ask is because there are specific files I don't know if are usefull or not. Like for example the new caller id feature I don't know witch files are associated with it. I do freeze as much as I can in tibp but I feel like its still slowing the phone down or taking up space. I've been a windows user a long long time and feel like when you uninstall something it's not the same as having a clean install. I can't get over that mindset. BTW thanks for the quick responce.

Those two changes require a framework hack, which requires another hack in services to disable signature verification. I've always wanted to remove those damn "Recent Apps" from the status bar, but only recently learned how to disable signature verification for when the framework is modified.
We have some amazing devs I'm sure sence 3.0 framework will be easly modified. Although I'm sure you can change the status bar without framwork mods like they did on the MyTouch 4g. Unless I'm wrong. Also thanks for revolution.

Until ROMs start coming out, use titanium backup to uninstall any of the bloatware you don't want. I uninstalled just about every app on my phone, and installed better versions of the ones I wanted, and in one case I uninstalled a stock app, then downloaded the same app from the market.
After getting rid of all the bloatware I noticed drastic battery life improvement, so I started looking at other things that were always running in the background, two of them were the preinstalled note pad app and Google Maps. I would stop them, and they would be back running in a matter of moments. I uninstalled both of them, downloaded Google Maps and ColorNote. For some reason, Maps is never running in the background any more. Not sure why that worked, but it did.
Well as I said in the post before I'm using the freeze function for now so I don't ruin anything. It goes into why I don't like doing that.

Means you have to copy SystemUI.apk to your computer, decompile it, re-write part of the code, re-compile it back into an .apk, then install it on the phone.
One of those "easier said then done" things, but not terribly difficult if you read through the thread and take the time to install the tools you need to your computer.
I'm intrigued by this, but there are other things on my list for this phone before I get around to something like this.

I wasn't expecting much dev support here in the beginning. I think ports will start showing up slowly but don't expect it to be anything like the Sensation subforum.
it's a shame because this is a killer device that can run anything thrown at it. with some patience and luck we'll get some devs who are interested in creating things for the slide... maybe from the G2 section once more people start changing over.
at least there's really nothing function-wise on the stock rom that makes it unusable for me. once the bloat is gone and ADW ex (or whatever home replacement you like) is loaded, it's pretty much all I need.. some aosp love would sure be nice though for me.
Yea, but it's a new device...and an expensive one so a lot of people don't have one yet.
For early adopters it's hard sometimes, my approach has just been to try to document everything as thoroughly as possible so that when devs do come, they have less work to do.
Of course, the best way to get something done is to do it yourself - i'd like to make my own ROM for this device, but i'm a long way from that. It'll happen, but i'm pretty positive that by the time I get it all figured out Cyanogenmod will have been ported to this device.
Still won't stop me from doing it though, i'm too curious.
Meantime, posting up everything we can learn about the phone will help in getting a custom ROM when a dev willing to do so comes through here.
I was wondering the same thing. I'm coming from the HD2 and the Galaxy St Vibrant so anyone who knows those phones understands.... I was thinking this forum would be a little more lively.
I've gone from refreshing a lot to refreshing once a day.

Yeah. Totaly. Look at the phones I've owned in the signature. I remember going back to the razer the forums were packed with hex mods and java games. Maybe not this specific one. Still this is the biggest mt4gs forum.
Someone above noted that the phone is new and expensive. That is definitely a factor. Also, from what I saw, T-Mobile didn't really market this phone heavily before it came out. Right at the launch I saw a good amount of ads but not long before. Like the SGS2 has gotten real advertising saturation. This phone is a real contender but because it doesn't have a huge screen it received, and continues to receive, less attention.
Things will pick up but at this point I have prepared myself for a wait. Devs will eventually get the word on how good it is and then things will pick up but it will take some time. For me, the hardware we have is worth the wait.
I did have a thought. Find out if there are devs working on this phone. If not, we could look at collectively getting a phone to a dev that could get it moving.

Just a couple of questions, so I hope you see this because I haven't posted ten times yet...
#1 no American or Canadian English setting (on initial setup, and under language settings)
#2 where's the Beats Audio?
Still love it, though. Noticeable difference in speed without background apps, and much better internal storage. Also, mildly improved battery life.

It's based on the stock EU ROM, so no, there's no American or Canadian English. I could add them but it'd add to the size of the system or no real reason. I'm sure you can live with the Queen's English
The Beats Audio doesn't show up anywhere in the UI, it just works its magic in the background. I even notice a difference when I use it with my cheap £20 eBay headphones so I know it's working
If you've seen other ROMs with the Beats Audio showing up as a setting on the UI, that's probably because they have the Music app from ROMs of newer phones. I might see if I can get that ported to my ROM now, come to think of it. Thanks for that idea
P.S. to further improve battery life, go to your sound settings and turn off all the sensor based stuff if you haven't already, that makes quite a difference!
Hmmm...haven't noticed a difference with my 20 buck Panasonics, or in my car, though that's with an FM transmitter (a good one, though).
I guess I'll live with the Queen's English, though the patriotic side of me cringes, eh?...
Weird, maybe it depends on the music you listen to. Stuff with heavy bass sounds better at least
God save our gracious Queeeeen
I just tried to stick the /system/apps folder from a Sensation XE onto my ChaCha... The ChaCha didn't like it too much. I'll experiment more later, see what I can get working. Looking around the XE ROM, there's certainly stuff here which shows whether or not Beats is working in the actual UI, so I might add some of that in if it plays nice with the ChaCha.
Cool! Thanks for all your work. Is it possible to move these posts to your thread in the development forum, so others can see what's going on?

Also, the facebook key doesn't work anymore. Can this be sorted out in an upcoming relase--is it possible to have the key open up the Tinfoil app?

A moderator would have to do that, but yeah, mods if you're reading this, moving these posts into my Stock Plus thread would be helpful, cheers

That's something else I'm looking into. I know it can be done, others have done it, I've just got to edit the right files in my ROM so it goes to Tinfoil.
I promise I'll start posting there once I cross this ten post threshold. I understand why they do it, and it clearly has an effect on the quality of the posts, but it's still annoying .

To confirm, I am going to try and implement a fix to the dialler bug this week when I continue work on my ROM. My first priority is Aroma at the moment but it's on my list of things to do.

Glad to hear that. Ur ROM was my 1st ROM i installed after Root this device.
Original ROM is good for user who have less experience in Android or someone love Sense UI of HTC. CM7 is only good for Tech guys.
Stock ROM feel on CM7?
I have been using Chacha for almost half year now, and I like it to core. Have tried almost all ROMs so far. CWM's backup/restore functionality is pure bliss. At times when your hands are itchy, go ahead, mess up your system, do all your experiments. When done, just restore and you are back to your normal mood! Excellent!!
About the ROMs, I try them a lot, but finally do settle down to ROMs based on stock, as my daily ROMS. These are ROMS which I try my own with some experimental versions, or ones available here like from Hexgore . The reason is, there are quite a bunch of apps on Stock ROMS which are perfectly tuned for Chacha's small screen, and hence I find them more efficient than other alternative apps. Here are apps I find too good and difficult to part from.
Mail App
Dialer App
Messages App
I agree that there would be a lot better apps (like K9 for mail). But the easy of bigger icons, easy to tap organization of icons, just make be feel to stay with this mail app.
Now, coming to point, Will it be possible to get these apps work in non-Stock environment. Similar to Gapps package, if we can get to package these apps, it will be great.
I myself, will try these experiments one by one, and report my observations. But just would like to know if there are any like-minded people like me. Please comment. Thanks.
