Hello, I visit often to look up stuff on the phone, but first time posting (plz be gentle)!
During a rom installation process... I installed the villainrom and then accidentally reboot the phone before I flashed the conversion package... The phone shut off and now I can't turn the phone on at all. Nothing comes on when I plug it into the charger, either...
Any suggestions? Insights?
UPDATE: Returned the phone to AT&T no questions asked since it wouldnt turn on
So youcant get into download mode either? Do u know how to get into download mode? If it wont then u need a usb jig. Checkout this thread for info on the jig http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=954458

First thing I'd try is pulling the battery for a good minute it two. Put the battery back in and then hold down both volume keys (keep them held) while plugging in your USB cable connected to your computer. Hopefully you'll see the download mode screen.
See if you can get this done first.

This is a simple fix if your able to follow directions with the jig. Relax and breath, and go to radio shack. No need to brainstorm here...
edit: Will someone else chime in here, lol, I'm thinking he's looking for more than 1 opinion.

But as Thnikk said, it's good to have one anyways. Good luck, and let us know how it goes.
The jig will work, I was in a situation close to yours and nothing worked till i built the jig. There is a nice step by step guide on how to do it. I suggest not cutting up your USB cable and buy the MicroUSB iGo adapter while you are at radio shack. Just search the forums or google for iGo jig.

Nice, but if the rep turns it on.. He will come across a GalaxyS SGH-I897 logo during boot screen and not like the usual boot screens that comes up for a stock captivate. Do you think he will spot the difference??

You must not want you phone to work again. Keep trying and be patient, it took me a little while when I first came up with the resistor method.
Use a desk lamp and/or a magnifying glass to see the prongs better.

No luck. Been trying this under a table lamp with magnifying glasses. Phone switched on for a couple of times and stuck on boot screen. May be 301 is what it needs. I will pick another 1k resistor and give it a try.

Well if your getting past the att world phone screen it could be a kernel issue, use a jig it'll work, if your not getting to the kernels's boot screen then take it to the "service center" not the rep that sold you the device if you cant get the jig to work, and if you got it from amazon and you purchased a two year account up/new take it to the service center att's service center supports all contract devices for one year no matter the retailer you purchased from (minus the iphone heh "droid food")so take it in if the phone dosn't get past the att world phone screen. if it dose use a jig flash to stock if your still having issues after a "Passed" stock flash take it in, and if you got to the reset part when flashing stock and failed.

No luck with the jig as of now. Will try using the Igo adapter later today. Managed to borrow an iphone from a friend and yeah Android FTMFW.
So I lent my brother my nexus s that had cm7 on it. He got into the clockworkmod, went to mounts/storage, and proceeded to format everything (bootloader, boot data, etc. everything in there) he said he thought that would fix the force closes, I figured no biggie, but now I can't even get the phone into download mode and I have no idea what to do, the phone will simply not turn on
wow.... dont even know why he would do that.
rule 1: dont lend people your phone.
and i dont know why you would try and get into download mode, Odin isn't the first thing you want to go to.
1. turn the phone off (if it isnt already)
2. hold volume up + power
... what happens? does bootloader mode pop up?
- plug your phone in your computer's USB
- does the sound for USB plugged in occur?
- does computer detect it?
Can't access fastboot.
Phone sometimes recognizes it and says this device is not recognized and it couldn't install the usb driver, sometimes when i plug it in it does nothing.
Didn't want to lend it to him, had no choice. I told him he should have just fixed the permissions on the phone, but then again he's not exactly android literate.
thats just dumb on his part.. i dont know why he would try and mess with your device. if it has problems, just ask you first.
its probably bricked if you cant access download or bootloader... definitely bricked if the computer is unable to detect it
your only way out of it is to get a replacement
In Device/Drivers of windows under Unspecified there's this:
SEC S5PC110 Test/BD
says drivers are not installed
Anybody out there with a solution?
I think there is more than one driver you can try, though I've never flashed anything in Windows (Linux already comes with the driver ), so I don't know for sure. I think I've seen people mentioned a few drivers before, try search for all the "brick" threads here.
Easiest solution might be to download a Linux live distribution (f.e. ubuntu) and run fastboot from there. No need to install any drivers.
Kicking him in the nuts will probably make you feel better... I don't know if it'll fix your phone though.

Yes, hit up http://www.mobiletechvideos.com/blog/?page_id=970 For 50 bucks they'll fix your phone and ship it back to you in no time. They got my phone on a Friday, I got it back on either Monday or Tuesday. Of course they're based in Texas and I'm in STL so it could differ for you, but the point is, they're fast, reliable, and professional.
Thanks for that - I'm based in Ireland but I'll give them a shout and see if we can do business......
Thanks a million for the reference PUMA. Please contact me when you are in need of a brick fix. I fix hundreds of Galaxy S / Samsung / HTC variants and several others in a brick of nearly any scenario. I've devoted a lot of time to providing and almost unseen service to people in need versus parting the phone out or trashing it.
I can buy one at a good price that the seller claims will not power on after trying to flash a rom. I know a lot of times one can work there way out of a apparent brick but I do not want to shell out cash for a real brick.

If the phone goes into download mode (volume down when plugging into computer w/ battery out) it can "probably" be recovered. Without knowing what said person flashed its hard to tell for certain. If they flashed firmware for another device, it might be done.
http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/...harge-full-factory-tar-flashing-software.html
That is what you would use to recover it.
Its common to soft brick (recoverable with some work) but one would have to make a serious mistake to hard brick the Charge.

I'm waiting for someone to post the modem image before I just throw mine away.

Yeah I thought it would more likely be recoverable than not. I know the fascinate was pretty good about that. Maybe I should get it.
If you can get it into Download mode, it can be recovered
Well find out soon enough. I either got a good deal or an expensive brick.
Samsung flashing pst is somewhat confusing to use. I managed to brick my friends phone last night to the point where odin could not connect to the phone but samsung flashing pst did the trick. Make sure you install all the drivers that come with pst and double click on the droid charge after opening samsung flashing pst then click on the sw download button on the left side of the new window. Then follow the directions in the link you posted. If you can access download mode you should easily be able to unbrick good luck I hope you get this fixed

Welp. I got it and it does not even look like it is pretending to power on under any circumstances.
You know how to go into download mode right? Open Odin, remove the battery in the Charge, plus the USB into your computer & while holding the Down volume rocker plug the Micro-USB into the phone and if done correctly you should see the triangle on your phones screen
Yeah I did that and there were no signs of life and I have done this part before on the fascinate. I guess maybe I will see if Samsung will fix it.
So I just installed the Alpha 7 for ICS. I followed all the directions on youtube and after the process was over with i rebooted the phone and it never came on. Help is needed.
That's because you brickd it. That's for the sgsII I777......we have the sgsII I727 completely different phones. Its done. Your going to have to get a new phone. The only ics we have is in xborders thread and there's no beta 7 for that. For future reference. Don't flash anything other then what is here in our devices dev section. Sorry hope u get a new phone quickly.
beat me to it...
So there is absolutely no way to unbrick it at all?

1 ) Turn your phone off. Power it off. Set your phone down.
2 ) Take your USB cable and plug it into the computer/laptop ONLY.
3 ) This requires both hands. Pick up your phone and hold down the volume up and down at the same time then plug in the USB to your phone with the other hand.
4 ) Keep holding the volume up and down buttons. The phone will vibrate, still hand and when you see Download mode. Let go.
This is for the US version, not sure if theres a difference tho.
Follow this guide....

You may be very lucky and get into download mode. I really doubt it. If it won't do anything at all when you try to power on. No lights. Then yeah its done. This situation usually yields a brick to add to the pile. Of people who should please spend more time reading/researching. Before attempting to root/flash. It will only benefit you. To understand what your doing before you leap in blindly.

Call your carrier and get the phone replaced by playing dumb. If that's not an option then call Samsung and play dumb. Your phone will be replaced. I don't recall there being any unbricking services yet for the i727.
For the future, you should know that this happened because you installed mali 400 drivers for a device that uses the adreno 220.
I got $5 on it.

Hello, so here is the story the best I can tell it. I have done quite a bit of work on Iphones, Ipods, and roms on my own phones, because of this my friends son asked if I had ever JTag'd a phone before, which I had never heard of at the time. Apparently a friend of his was trying to load a custom ROM on his Verizon Galaxy S3 and something went wrong. Unfortunatly, I have no idea what ROM he tried loading or how he tried loading it. All I do know is, there is no response on the phone at all, the screen stays black. When you plug it into the computer, the computer recognizes a device but asks for a qhsusb_dload driver. I have read that this is a hard brick, and needs Jtag service, however I have also read that it is really hard to actually hard brick a phone, and this is actually more of a soft brick. Can anyone confirm this, and is it possible that just a USB jig will work to force it into download mode? I have ordered a Jig and it should be here next week, but I wanted to ask some questions in the mean time. Thanks for your help.

I pushed a corrupt ROM and it borked. Contrary to your post, it is easy to brick this S3. I've hard bricked twice.... Just be sure the files you flash are for your variation of the S3 (ie don't flash an ATT rom onto a VZW fone) and make sure you got a good download by checking the md5.

It's a debugging port that can be used to push firmware onto memory. Mostly used for diagnostics and initial programming since it allows debugging after the first cpu instruction.
