[Q] Will USB Jig work? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hello, so here is the story the best I can tell it. I have done quite a bit of work on Iphones, Ipods, and roms on my own phones, because of this my friends son asked if I had ever JTag'd a phone before, which I had never heard of at the time. Apparently a friend of his was trying to load a custom ROM on his Verizon Galaxy S3 and something went wrong. Unfortunatly, I have no idea what ROM he tried loading or how he tried loading it. All I do know is, there is no response on the phone at all, the screen stays black. When you plug it into the computer, the computer recognizes a device but asks for a qhsusb_dload driver. I have read that this is a hard brick, and needs Jtag service, however I have also read that it is really hard to actually hard brick a phone, and this is actually more of a soft brick. Can anyone confirm this, and is it possible that just a USB jig will work to force it into download mode? I have ordered a Jig and it should be here next week, but I wanted to ask some questions in the mean time. Thanks for your help.

Good luck. That qhsusb tag denotes a hard brick.

That sucks, that my friend, is a hardbrick, fixable, but its a process and tedious.

I had the same thing happen to me. See here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1770341
I pushed a corrupt ROM and it borked. Contrary to your post, it is easy to brick this S3. I've hard bricked twice.... Just be sure the files you flash are for your variation of the S3 (ie don't flash an ATT rom onto a VZW fone) and make sure you got a good download by checking the md5.
FWIW, Josh over at MobileTechVideos.com has JTAG'd me back both times. Fair price and quick service. I believe he's the only dude in the US doing it...

hi there, unfortunately i flash the wrong rom, and the result is the same of the first poster
what i can do? what is jtag?
i have bought a j usb someone have used it? it works?

what is "jtag?"

It's a debugging port that can be used to push firmware onto memory. Mostly used for diagnostics and initial programming since it allows debugging after the first cpu instruction.

i have bought the jig usb, i'll try, if download mode starts, then what i should do? follow this guide? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840030

Interested to see if you are able to get the jig to work. I have not heard of a jig working on a hard brick. Yes if you get back into download mode just start the process over with Odin

Phone completely Dead

So I lent my brother my nexus s that had cm7 on it. He got into the clockworkmod, went to mounts/storage, and proceeded to format everything (bootloader, boot data, etc. everything in there) he said he thought that would fix the force closes, I figured no biggie, but now I can't even get the phone into download mode and I have no idea what to do, the phone will simply not turn on
wow.... dont even know why he would do that.
rule 1: dont lend people your phone.
and i dont know why you would try and get into download mode, Odin isn't the first thing you want to go to.
1. turn the phone off (if it isnt already)
2. hold volume up + power
... what happens? does bootloader mode pop up?
- plug your phone in your computer's USB
- does the sound for USB plugged in occur?
- does computer detect it?
Can't access fastboot.
Phone sometimes recognizes it and says this device is not recognized and it couldn't install the usb driver, sometimes when i plug it in it does nothing.
Didn't want to lend it to him, had no choice. I told him he should have just fixed the permissions on the phone, but then again he's not exactly android literate.
thats just dumb on his part.. i dont know why he would try and mess with your device. if it has problems, just ask you first.
its probably bricked if you cant access download or bootloader... definitely bricked if the computer is unable to detect it
your only way out of it is to get a replacement
In Device/Drivers of windows under Unspecified there's this:
SEC S5PC110 Test/BD
says drivers are not installed
Anybody out there with a solution?
I think there is more than one driver you can try, though I've never flashed anything in Windows (Linux already comes with the driver ), so I don't know for sure. I think I've seen people mentioned a few drivers before, try search for all the "brick" threads here.
Easiest solution might be to download a Linux live distribution (f.e. ubuntu) and run fastboot from there. No need to install any drivers.
Kicking him in the nuts will probably make you feel better... I don't know if it'll fix your phone though.

any chance that this could help you?
Ddi you ever get your phone sorted ? I'm now in the same situation !
Yes, hit up http://www.mobiletechvideos.com/blog/?page_id=970 For 50 bucks they'll fix your phone and ship it back to you in no time. They got my phone on a Friday, I got it back on either Monday or Tuesday. Of course they're based in Texas and I'm in STL so it could differ for you, but the point is, they're fast, reliable, and professional.
Thanks for that - I'm based in Ireland but I'll give them a shout and see if we can do business......
Thanks a million for the reference PUMA. Please contact me when you are in need of a brick fix. I fix hundreds of Galaxy S / Samsung / HTC variants and several others in a brick of nearly any scenario. I've devoted a lot of time to providing and almost unseen service to people in need versus parting the phone out or trashing it.

Any chance to reanimate completely dead device?

You either have a severe hardware failure or a corrupt bootloader.
Since it's nearly impossible to corrupt bootloaders on our device I'm guessing hardware failure. Take it in for warranty service.
What were you doing with it before it died? Provide details.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild him. We have the technology.
I have had two people now that have had completely dead batteries and did not know. Try to charge your battery. See if the emblem comes on while charging. If it does leave it alone for at least 4 hrs then try to enter download.

If you are using a Windows PC to run Odin, make sure that you have installed the correct drivers to connect with your phone. I believe these are proper:
http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/c...ATT_SGH-i997_Infuse4G_USB_Drivers_5_2_0_2.zip
You can also spend $1.99 on eBay for a resistor jig:
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=jig+download
I once had something crazy happen after a bad crash with an experimental overclock kernel for the vibrant on my captivate. the screen went black even in download mode. but the phone was infact in download mode just no screen image. it flashed in odin and restored me back to stock.
I know its an off chance but if you happen to have had a similar error and your drivers in windows aren't installed right then it may look like a hardware failure.
if you have insurance get another one. if you haven't voided the warenty send it to Samsung. if you want to help out development donate it to Adam outler. he wants something not restorable by normal means.
My Infuse recently did the very same thing. DEAD ON ARRIVAL! I tried all forms of CPR but she died an untimely death while attempting to flash back to stock. I had done that many times before so it wasn't anything I did wrong. I took it back to the ATT Store and they sent me to the device support center to get a new one. The new one is far more stable ans performs better than my original out of the box model. So just take it back and get another one or call warranty and they will ship you one overnight.

Yeah, you just got a bad model, it happens.
At OP, if you have warranty with AT&T, take it back to the store, and ask for another one. If not, call Samsung, you can ship them your phone and then they'll either fix it, or send you another one.

Depending on what you were doing, you may have hard bricked your phone. A usb jig may work for a soft brick but since your phone has no response whatsoever, chances are its hard bricked. Go to "mobiletechvideos.com" they provide a JTAG service that unbricks hard bricked phones. give it a shot
Why pay for JTAG service when his device is still under warranty? Contact AT&T or Samsung. One of the two will hook you up.

[Q] Anyone has experience on replacing a rooted SK?

There's a lot of threads on replacing rooted droid phones. But i couldnt find anything on Samsung T-mobile phones.
i bricked the rooted sidekick 4G yesterday (a hard brick, when i boot the phone, it doesnt turn on, only a little back light comes up, no samsung logo; when i release the power, screen goes back to dark). And today i asked for a replacement and it will arrive in a week.
When i send back the brick phone, they told me to take out battery, battery door and sd card. Then they will check what happened to it when they get the front piece of the phone
So my question is are the tech people able to find out my phone was rooted and void the warranty. Or they will just replace the phone since they cant really turn on the phone to check anything.
Thanks in advance guys!
they will just pop in a test battery n see if its hardbricked
For your sake, you probably don't want to go flashing your device again. But, they probably aren't going to specifically know the device was rooted. You erased everything when you flashed the device..
I still doubt you really bricked it...

what if it is hard bricked? does that included in the warranty, or they will charge me extra money?
@orange: the problem is, it wasnt really bricked at the beginning, i was still able to get into download mode, so i tried to restore it with odin.
But idk what happened during the restore, the phone just wont boot after that, nor get into download mode/recovery mode. So im pretty sure its hard bricked =[

Samsung phones are damn near impossible to hard brick thanks to Odin, but even so if you turn it in they won't know anything if they can't even boot the phone up, they will through the battery in, see it doesn't boot, and send you a new one. They don't have the same tools we have

[Q] Noobie help: Phone Bricked during rom installation

Hello, I visit often to look up stuff on the phone, but first time posting (plz be gentle)!
During a rom installation process... I installed the villainrom and then accidentally reboot the phone before I flashed the conversion package... The phone shut off and now I can't turn the phone on at all. Nothing comes on when I plug it into the charger, either...
Any suggestions? Insights?
UPDATE: Returned the phone to AT&T no questions asked since it wouldnt turn on
So youcant get into download mode either? Do u know how to get into download mode? If it wont then u need a usb jig. Checkout this thread for info on the jig http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=954458

First thing I'd try is pulling the battery for a good minute it two. Put the battery back in and then hold down both volume keys (keep them held) while plugging in your USB cable connected to your computer. Hopefully you'll see the download mode screen.
See if you can get this done first.

Does anyone have any information on successful returns/exchanges to AT&T when the phone hard bricks like this?
I have read alot of people reaturned there bricked phones and they were exchanged. If it doesnt power onor do anything they cant tell that u bricked it theyll just see it doesnt work and exchange it.

Yeah id go that route first it is easier. But for futre order yourself the jig it really does work . An tons of people have and have used them. Its an awezone thing about samsung phones. Unless you physically damage the hardware the jig can save your ass

black screen, can't get to download mode

I think I posted this in the wrong forum, I suppose I was a little confused on my phone
I have a US AT&T version of the i727 Skyrocket. I think i accidentally flashed an improper kernel:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1369977
I didn't realize I was browsing the wrong forum *sigh*.
Anyway, when I went to reboot after installing the kernel in CWM, I get a black screen. If I hold down both volume buttons and plug in USB, I get nothing. It doesn't seem to put it in download mode. There, it doesn't get recognized in ODIN.
What are my options here? Would a "jig" actually do anything in this case? I can't tell the scenarios it can actually recover from and not.
Hard brick, its done
Jtag or send to samsung

If it does absolutely nothing, i'd say you bricked it which is quite possible if you flashed something for another phone. I don't think a jig will do you any good, based on things i've read before. Not 100%. Maybe someone else will give you some better input.
thanks for the replies. I can't get it in to download mode at all, so I'm afraid it's hard bricked.
Are there any guides to doing the jtag repair yourself? I'm pretty tech-savvy and comfortable opening up the phone, etc. I could get my hands on a jtag unit.
I just don't want to keep bricking it and sending it out for another $50. I'd rather have a solution where I can fix it myself.

Well, jtag for this phone was just made possible only a month or two ago. There may be a guide somewhere, but I dunno. You flashed something from a completely different phone, any time you do that you are pretty much guaranteed a brick. Just pay attention to what you're doing, man. Read more and flash less.

Right, understandable. Lesson learned there.
I can't tell if this is legitimate or not:

$50 isn't too bad. Obviously doing it yourself, if you could, would be better. I'd be on the safe side though and have mobiletech (i'm assuming you know about them), do it.
