WARNING: android tablet ad-hoc myth - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

do not waste your time rooting your archos 101 or any other android tablet in hopes of using your android phone like samsung galaxy s because it is ad-hoc
and no matter what you read on here..it does not work. no one can tell you how to do it or what to do because they themselfs have not done it. it will not connect it will only waste your time. also do not get fooled into thinking that by using wifi tether 3.1 or 3.2 beta will get you infrastructure as this is also a pack of lies. i did this followed what (simple steps) and my archos 101 does not even find it. so much for that idea.
so unless someone can prooth it working from a galaxy s to a android tablet...it will remain a myth.

i have successfully connected my Archie 101IT to my galaxy s2 using Wi-Fi hot spot. Standard android functionality. No rooting etc required

i have tried so many ways...sometime it will stick on finding ip address or it will say connected i will leave it a few min...it is showing wifi signal yet i still can not use the internet...so all the people who said they have done it with there galaxy samsung 1 not 2 as i have the first one, are not helping

what are the settings ? no one here knows how to do it...yet they say they have done it

Bluetooth tethering from any android phone?

Since my useless windows phone won't tether with my transformer and therefore I can't make use of my data plan and use my tablet outside of my house, I want to buy a new phone so that I can have data access anywhere I go. Do all android phones tether with HC flawlessly or is there something I should watch out for? I'd hate to spend the $$ and not have it do the very thing I bought it for.
Right now, I'm looking at the iPhone4 as I've confirmed that it will tether with my tablet no problem. However, I'm not much of an apple fan, and giving more money to Jobs does not appeal to me at all. My other choice is the Samsung Galaxy S2. Love this phone and it runs on Droid! Can someone confim for me that the OS on this phone would let me tether with the tablet? Assuming anyone here has a phone with similar OS.
Your help is greatly appreciated!

i use wireless tether in bluetooth mode to tether my TF to my phone, and works great. so depending on the phone you get, you might need a 3rd party tethering app (in my case wireless tether) and root, but for the most part, it should work.
I don't need a signature.
You do not need any programs to tether your phone to the TF. Doesn't even have to be rooted. Enable bluetooth on your phone. Then go into your TF, enable bluetooth. Pair your phone and TF together. Then click on the wrench icon on your TF and click on tether.
This is what I am doing on my DroidX to get online.
that wholy depends if your phone as built in profile for bluetooth tethering. my phone do not, which is why i need wireless tether to do it.
I don't need a signature.
I have built in BT tethering on my phone (I think; i see the option) and my TF and my phone both say "paired but not connected"....
How do I get them to connect?
Have any of you connected using wireless hotspot from an android phone to the TF?

Are you sure that you will be able to tether to the Transformer with an IPhone? I have a 3g IPad and have tried with both PDANet and My Wi 4 and have been unsuccessful.
I can tether to a Windows phone and an Iphone with the IPad and the two programs but not to the Transformer. I have tried Wifi- but the Transformer never detects the hotspot. I have also tried bluetooth- where I get a "tethered" notification on the Transformer but I also get "no internet connection".
I started a thread on this a couple of days back:

I also have Wireless Tether for my Verizon Fascinate. I am using version 2.0.5-Pre9. I set the app in Bluetooth mode and it set itself to discoverable. Well, I already previously paired my device so I just turned on Bluetooth on the Transformer and clicked the wrench next to the Fascinate. Unfortunately, I only have the option to rename the device. No connections are being made. Any suggestions?
If we can't connect via ad-hoc wifi or bluetooth, is there an infrastructure wifi app that we can use?

Transformer (as all Honeycomb devices) only has problems with ad-hoc networks. If you get a new phone, that is able to tether an actual Wifi hotspot you should be fine.
Your Windows Phone should be able to tether ad-hoc networks right? I made a guide how to enable this on your Transformer. Only thing is, you need to be rooted. If you want to check out, go here:

That is so annoying!!!!
Why won't the Transformer connect to an IPad 3g created hotspot??!!
My laptop will, an IPhone will, my Windows 6.5 (sorry) phone will.
Why won't the Transformer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is it an "android" thing?
I'm able to bluetooth tether using the latest wifi android tether (version 2..not the beta v3) with my dell streak to my TF, if i use wifi tether it will kill my streak's battery in now time..using bluetooth might be a little slower but my dell streak battery last 3-4 times more...
I'm not been able to pair it with my epic 4g tho

I guess then your ipad probably creates an ad-hoc connection, which honeycomb doesn't like, as i said before. It's just a suggestion though, don't know anything about the ipad. If so, try the solution i posted earlier.

wpa_supplicant works in SGT P6210 ?

Anybody got the "wpa_supplicant" works in P6210 for Tethering over Adhoc?
also looking for adhoc on Galaxy Tab p6210 wifi only
Does anyone have a solution to this yet? Really want this to work.. already zapped my wifi on my first p6210 Tab and had to return it.
Please develop this someone.. for GT-P6210 7.0 Plus, WIFI ONLY, Honeycomb 3.2, already Rooted and running stable.
*Looking for: AdHoc PROVEN solution for P6210 (Already Rooted) So I can tether my Tab through my Smartphones wifi (Cell phone (mine is nokia) acts as 3g to wifi hotspot. thats why i got a wifi only tablet!)
Come on Geniuses!
Another way to bypass.
If you have wmwifiRouter installed in your wm smart phone, you may use this way to tether your Tab to the phone. you will need a hardware Access Point to bridge the wifi:
http://support.wmwifirouter.com/knowledge/KB0806019/
It works well for me, just for temp use though. still waiting for the wpa_supplicant to come out.
GT-P6210 Adhoc: Need solution
I looked up WMWifiRouter and found that its sister program for my nokia is JoikuSpot and I was running that steadily for a while for my laptop.. works fine for normal wifi (not adhoc) because our android devices block adhoc connections.. my laptop and desktop work fine... its only the android LOOK HERE -> www .joiku.com/help ... Top of page under "Solutions for Top 6 questions" .. Line #3 ..
>> 3.Make sure your connecting device (e.g. laptop or tablet) allows AD HOC WIFI connection. Some Android tablets block ad hoc wifi connections.<<
So we need developers (not me i'm stupid) to work on this.. Please guys!
What I meant was you may tranfer your smart phone's adhoc to a normal wifi through a hardware AP, then the Tab can pick it without even rooted.
need help
i see what u mean.. I cant find another ap for my nokia to do that. Also, i feel like android is blocking good features so big cell companies make more money.. I already have an unlimited data plan thru an offbrand carrier. If my tab didnt block adhoc i would love my tab more.. But im thinking about an apple product.. Boo i hate apple.
Im gonna check back everyday till someone notices me.. Please help
wpa_supplicant question..
Ok so my question is.. if u mess up wpa_supplicant is there a way to restore it.. i guess my first attempt at modifying this failed and bricked my tab.. is there a way to get it back? is it part of the Official ROM found under this thread:
> [Official FIRMWARES] Galaxy Tab Plus P6200/P6210/SGH-T869
> Official ROM for P6210
> ----------------
> US Retail Version
> ----------------
> www .multiupload.com/SYSK9QMO6S
> Thanks to clubtech
I mean this file is kinda important and i wasnt able to get the wifi working after my first tab attempt.. and i believe i flashed the above rom (but not sure)
Did u find a way to restore the wpa_supplicant ?
Help develpers, I'd really like to be able to connect to ad hoc networks with my Galaxy tab plus. We need a modified wpa_supplicant that will work. I've tried the ones out now and they break the wifi. Reverting back to the original brings it back.
Bad News
There is a larger issue of Samsung not releasing the source code for their tabs that is driving this issue. The Gtab 7.0+ uses an Atheros WLAN chip so the wpa_supplicant file must be modified not only for the proper version of the OS but also for the proper networking hardware which in this case is that Atheros chip (Broadcomm is a more commonly used WLAN chip). Since Samsung is so far refusing to make public the source code for this tab (even just the source code that would cover the the networking drivers) it is not likely that a developer can or will even want to try and take this on. If there was another manufacturer that utilized the same Atheros 600 WLAN chip and were also decent enough to release their source code, then this could possibly still move forward without Samsung's assistance. Unfortunately such a tab from another manufacturer seems to just be a mythical creature. Gary9d has asked Samsung for the source code but so far has not had much luck. A petition (see link at the end of this post) has been started that asks Samsung to release their source code to developers. Samsung may turn a blind eye and deaf ear the the whole petiton movement but it is worth a try. I beleive Gary9d has another thread in this forum addressing his frustrating attempts to get Samsung to do the right thing. Last time I checked that thread there was a small glimmer of hope becuase a Samsung rep had reached out and established contact with him.
http://www.change.org/petitions/samsung-mobile-help-third-party-development-achieve-full-potential-of-purchased-devices
Damn! If i knew that a little earlier i just bought one, although iets a great device.
Hope someone can still figure this out. Thanks for sharing this i think im gonna stop
Searching for now.
Try Bluetooth
As an interim fix until someone makes a working WPA_Supplicant file, try using bluetooth to connect your P6210 to your phone. I'm using a Motorola Triumph phone with bluetooth connecting it to my P6210.
It works like a champ and uses less battery on the phone.
Yeah works for me to, i use foxfi on my xperia X10 with corresponding pdanet app on my galaxy tab + works great i must say!

[Q] A Few Questions About the TF101 (Thinking of Buying)

Hi Folks,
I just bought an Acer A500 and I'm really disappointed in it. The screen isn't very good, and wifi seems a bit wonky on it. Not that I'm against hacking, because I'm not at all. I don't like the fact that it doesn't work with ad-hoc wifi connections out of the box. The thing I loved about it was that I had it rooted, recovery and a custom ICS rom installed within an hour.
I know the TF101 has a better screen so I'm not going to ask that. I've tried to search for most of this info, but you know how good search is, so I'll ask here.
I see the tab has root, is there a one click method that I missed? I thought I saw one for it at one point but haven't seen it since.
As far as wifi goes, will this thing hook up to our android phones using the tether apps (not pdanet)?
How easy is it to brick one of these? Stupid question I know, but I've been using Samsung phones which are pretty much impossible to brick unless you really screw up on a kernel, so I would just like to hear what you think.
Reason I ask is because I debated between this and the A500. I went with the A500 based on price. I've been theming over on the the Nexus S for AOKP and CM9 so I'm looking for a tab that I will be able to work with the same roms so I can expand into tablets. I've also started trying to do some source builds so I can make some of my own visual modifications to some of the jar files within the framework.
Thanks in advanced for any input you can give!
1. Easy to root, especially the earlier models.
2. Wifi tether & Bluetooth tether (I recommend bluetooth highly!)
3. Almost impossible to brick if you have one of the earlier Transformers with NVflash.

On a new model, all you get is CWM. So make a back up and hold it dear. Because if something gets hosed while flashing and you don't have anything to go back to. Its dead.
On an older model they have nvflash and can recover from anything.
So what I'm hearing is buy a refurb and hope?

Mine is a new model. SBK2. I have flashed it 30 times and never had an issue. Granted I have my original backup and origianl kernel on a 2 gig card I had lie'n around and then I placed that in my safe.
As long as you know what you are doing yer all good. Maybe. Lol
try to find a used one preferably SBK1 which is B-70(some) and below they are much easier to work with when it comes to modding and hacking (NV flash) which is like ODIN for Samsung phones. They are great tablets dont get me wrong but the new wave of devices are unfortunetly going to make these tabs obsolete much better than the Acer devices you spoke of

USB Tethering

It doesn't natively work on the Infinity, but I'm stubborn. If anyone can give me some direction as to how best to tackle this, it would be helpful. Maybe someone else had already started on something similar, or if not, at least a starting point.
Mind you, I'm trying to tether FROM my Sprint phone TO my tablet.

Have you tried connecting your Sprint phone via bluetooth? I noticed that when I paired mine, it showed up as a possible tether point but I don't have data on my plan so couldn't test it.
I also think this thread needs to be moved to the Q&A forum.
I doubt you'll get it working through USB. I dont think the Infinity has drivers for that.
There's tons of solutions to get it going over wifi, and if you want something a little more power efficient try a combination of PDANet for Tablets on the Infinity and FoxFi on your phone to tether over bluetooth.
Sigh... the entire point to this thread being in the Development forum is to develop the drivers needed to make it work.

Unfortunately, unless you have already developed such app, this post does not belong in the development forums, which are for apps/ROMs that have already been developed, not for posts about apps/ROMs that you would like to have developed.

Already posted in Q&A. Pretty much the sames answers you received there. Dude, just wifi/BT tether... No one is gonna hack the wireless network on your phone to get free 4G internet.
Obviously I need to go elsewhere, then. I thought this would be good place to go for aid with app development, and instead all I get is 'you're dumb, do it this way' and 'Development is for apps already developed, not for those in development' as seems to be the case. Thanks anyway, I suppose.
Not trying to give you a hard time and certainly didn't mean to insinuate you're dumb. You're just asking for something that doesn't really NEED to be done and really can't be done (at the moment). There are already lots of good solutions for what you're ultimately looking to do, tether your phone to your tablet to access the net. Being stubborn about doing it via USB just doesn't make sense (unless you're not really being honest about wanting simple internet access and you need USB tether for other reasons). Who would want wires when you can do it wirelessly? Wires suck... lol.
Hopefully you'll stick around and enjoy the community. Lots of smart nice people here ready to lend a hand.
Grave digging
I've found a need for this or at least a work around. I work offshore and internet is restricted to 1 device per person. My tablet cannot tether back to my PC but my mobile can. I can usb tether my phone to my PC while on wifi. However you cannot bluetooth tether while on wifi so my tablet becomes useless. Please if you're thinking I should just bluetooth or wifi tether using my data I will ask you to log off life and KYS because as I said earlier I work offshore there is no data. Is there a way to bluetooth tether while on wifi??

[Q] Wifi Tether on TMO is Working, what's wrong?

Okay, I am sure this has been talked to death by some people here....but....I have been trying to get WIFI Tether to work between my HTC One S (rooted TMO) and Wifi Galaxy Note 10.1, no such luck until tonight. Now it WORKS!
I have spent days searching threads and everyone had the same advice, go with Barnancle or Foxfi....I downloaded both...Barnancle never would run right and I could never see it on my Tablet. Foxfi...well, after I read that I had to download stuff to the tablet, I gave up on using it. So, back to square one....Wifi Tether has worked for the IPOD and I decided to give it another try....
I went the route of downloading Google Chrome to my HTC
I downloaded User Agent Switcher Chrome addon and changed User to XOOM
I then started Wifi Tether made sure my setting was Generic ICS(JB)
I also checked on Routing Fix
Then restarted Wifi Tether
The tablet recognized it and connected!!!!!!!!!
I was able to access the internet!
Now, here is my question.....What am I missing?....This seemed to easy and I fear I am missing something, am I supposed to run Chrome on the Tablet? User Agent Switcher on the Tablet, too?....Keep Google Chrome open on HTC while WiFi Tether is connected?...These are the details I never found answers to....
Otherwise, do I just turn on Wifi Tether and connect my Tablet as I would to any Wifi?....and this should be the usual process... I spent so long looking for an answer I feel that this is too easy of a solution, not that I want it to be more complicated .
I don't use tethering too much, but it comes in handy when trying to keep the kids quiet in non child friendly places.
Any advice would be great. Thanks:fingers-crossed:
I believe tmous gives a courtesy 200MB now before they redirect you to buy a tether plan. And their new price tiers include 500MB with the option to buy more. Wouldn't be surprised if they're allowing it to get people used to it so if/when they lock it down more people will buy it.
