Bluetooth tethering from any android phone? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since my useless windows phone won't tether with my transformer and therefore I can't make use of my data plan and use my tablet outside of my house, I want to buy a new phone so that I can have data access anywhere I go. Do all android phones tether with HC flawlessly or is there something I should watch out for? I'd hate to spend the $$ and not have it do the very thing I bought it for.
Right now, I'm looking at the iPhone4 as I've confirmed that it will tether with my tablet no problem. However, I'm not much of an apple fan, and giving more money to Jobs does not appeal to me at all. My other choice is the Samsung Galaxy S2. Love this phone and it runs on Droid! Can someone confim for me that the OS on this phone would let me tether with the tablet? Assuming anyone here has a phone with similar OS.
Your help is greatly appreciated!

i use wireless tether in bluetooth mode to tether my TF to my phone, and works great. so depending on the phone you get, you might need a 3rd party tethering app (in my case wireless tether) and root, but for the most part, it should work.
I don't need a signature.

You do not need any programs to tether your phone to the TF. Doesn't even have to be rooted. Enable bluetooth on your phone. Then go into your TF, enable bluetooth. Pair your phone and TF together. Then click on the wrench icon on your TF and click on tether.
This is what I am doing on my DroidX to get online.

that wholy depends if your phone as built in profile for bluetooth tethering. my phone do not, which is why i need wireless tether to do it.
I don't need a signature.

I have built in BT tethering on my phone (I think; i see the option) and my TF and my phone both say "paired but not connected"....
How do I get them to connect?

Have any of you connected using wireless hotspot from an android phone to the TF?

Are you sure that you will be able to tether to the Transformer with an IPhone? I have a 3g IPad and have tried with both PDANet and My Wi 4 and have been unsuccessful.
I can tether to a Windows phone and an Iphone with the IPad and the two programs but not to the Transformer. I have tried Wifi- but the Transformer never detects the hotspot. I have also tried bluetooth- where I get a "tethered" notification on the Transformer but I also get "no internet connection".
I started a thread on this a couple of days back:

I also have Wireless Tether for my Verizon Fascinate. I am using version 2.0.5-Pre9. I set the app in Bluetooth mode and it set itself to discoverable. Well, I already previously paired my device so I just turned on Bluetooth on the Transformer and clicked the wrench next to the Fascinate. Unfortunately, I only have the option to rename the device. No connections are being made. Any suggestions?
If we can't connect via ad-hoc wifi or bluetooth, is there an infrastructure wifi app that we can use?

Transformer (as all Honeycomb devices) only has problems with ad-hoc networks. If you get a new phone, that is able to tether an actual Wifi hotspot you should be fine.
Your Windows Phone should be able to tether ad-hoc networks right? I made a guide how to enable this on your Transformer. Only thing is, you need to be rooted. If you want to check out, go here:

Yep sure have, do it all the time works like a charm

I use the Wifi Hotspot feature of Stock Android 2.2 on my HTC Desire to tether my transformer. No dicking around with Bluetooth or 3rd party apps required.

That is so annoying!!!!
Why won't the Transformer connect to an IPad 3g created hotspot??!!
My laptop will, an IPhone will, my Windows 6.5 (sorry) phone will.
Why won't the Transformer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is it an "android" thing?

I'm able to bluetooth tether using the latest wifi android tether (version 2..not the beta v3) with my dell streak to my TF, if i use wifi tether it will kill my streak's battery in now time..using bluetooth might be a little slower but my dell streak battery last 3-4 times more...
I'm not been able to pair it with my epic 4g tho

I guess then your ipad probably creates an ad-hoc connection, which honeycomb doesn't like, as i said before. It's just a suggestion though, don't know anything about the ipad. If so, try the solution i posted earlier.

USB tethering

I have a tp2 on verizon. When i plug in the phone if i choose Internet Connection Sharing will i be charge the extra phone as modem fee by verizon, or is it like the wifi router in it being free?
I think they are going to charge you unless you run the silent teather thing. I think it was called ICSInstall.CAB. Ive been using the usb teather for a while since installing that and have not seen any charges.
Although thats one of the things Im concerned about with the new verizon mr2. Im hoping that still works without getting nailed by the big V.

The tethering in Energy Rom does not let verizon see you tethering. I have used his rom recently and have tethered with no additional charges on my bill. I have even used it to play games online. You can surf safely using your TP2.
I can't say with 100% certainly but I believe you can use WiFiRouter as well. It's pretty slick. You run it and connect to the internet then you can connect to it with any other wifi device. It does have encryption as well so you can create a secure (well, semi-secure) hotspot. Pretty quick too. I found this thread which has lots of user feedback if your interested:

Wouldn't just using the USB Tether product hide the tethering from Verizon without having to use the cab that you mentioned?

[Q] WinMobile 6.1 Bluetooth tether help needed

I'm a total noob to android so please forgive the total lack of knowledge. I have the HTC Touch Pro 2, (european version) and I want to run my TF tethered via bluetooth off my phone. Can someone PLEASE post steby by step instructions, both for what needs to be done on the phone AND the TF in order to get this to work? I've been trying for a few days now and nothing. I can pair the phone with the tablet but it says "paired but not connected". It's frustrating.
Thanks for any help!
No chit it's frustrating. I've been trying myself with the same setup and N A D A!!! I'm no rocket scientist but daaaaammmmm why is this hard???
I had a diamond before my evo, and I know there were apps out there that did wifi tethering. Have you looked into that?
wifi tethering wastes much more power, why are ppl so ignorant of this? no one in the Android camp seems to be informed enough to ask for Bluetooth tethering, which is what bluetooth was largely designed for in the first place.
Windows Mobile had this for ages.

THANK YOU! Bluetooth people...BLUETOOTH! Anyways, looks like I can pretty much forget about this. Not many people have had any success. My friends iPhone tethers via bluetooth no prob, but then I'd have to buy the Iphoe and....hang out at startbucks.
I can't help you with windows mobile but I tether via bluetooth from my nexus one to my Transformer without issue with nothing needed at the transformer end.
If the device doing the tethering supports the profile the TF is expecting it just works (Pix or it didn't happen attached).
[Edit]
Looks like Android uses the PAN profile and Winmob may be exposing the older DUN profile
Thanks SilentMobius
I have gotten as far as the TP2 showing connected and tethered on the phone as well as the symbol on the Transformer, but it will just not transfer data. I'm asuming that any Android phone would be able to tether w/the Transformer? I'm with Sprint and guess I need 2 upgrade to the Evo or something.

Probably not I'm using http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ for the bluetooth tethering (cm7 only have wifi built in) It has limited compatibility and only works on rooted phones, but it's been around since the G1 and is pretty stable.

Would you try "BT Files Transfer" for testing this function?
Not sure about WM6.1, but on my TD2 running WM6.5 it works fine. Pair up the phone and TF then run Internet Sharing on the phone (its in the Tools folder on mine). Select Bluetooth (PAN) from the dropdown instead of USB and hit connect. You should then be able to tether from the TF by selecting the phone from the bluetooth settings

Wi-Fi Tethering Question

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, or whatnot. Just so many darn sub-categories..
Anyways, I've had a HTC Inspire 4G before, thought I would love an iPhone 4s, well I jailbroke it and such, and still missed Android. So today I purchased another Inspire 4G on eBay.
It'll arrive Saturday, and I wanna root it, and flash it with a custom ROM.
Is CM7 or CM9 better? I was curious about CM9, since my Inspire is only single-core with 512mb of RAM. Isn't that borderline?
Alright my main question is: I want free Wi-Fi tethering on my Android, someone told me when I flash it to CM7, I can enable Wi-Fi tethering, and AT&T won't ever catch it. Is that true? Cuz I had an app on my iPhone from Cydia, that allowed me to tether Wi-Fi for my laptop, and it worked amazing. I really want that on this Android phone, but also want a program that works well, and that won't get caught easily by AT&T (I guess it needs it's own VPN, instead of using AT&T's).
Thanks for any and all help, and sorry again if I posted in the wrong section. -EG91
The main thing you need is for your computer to-be-tethered...you need an addon for your browser that Allows you to change your agent settings. Super user agent For firefox works great
Gotcha..
Hmm, so it won't be like the real Wi-Fi hotspot then? Cuz on my iPhone, I could press the Wi-Fi tether button, then find the wireless signal on any phone or laptop, and connect to it easily.
I was hoping I could do something like that with my Android..

USB Tethering

It doesn't natively work on the Infinity, but I'm stubborn. If anyone can give me some direction as to how best to tackle this, it would be helpful. Maybe someone else had already started on something similar, or if not, at least a starting point.
Mind you, I'm trying to tether FROM my Sprint phone TO my tablet.

Have you tried connecting your Sprint phone via bluetooth? I noticed that when I paired mine, it showed up as a possible tether point but I don't have data on my plan so couldn't test it.
I also think this thread needs to be moved to the Q&A forum.
I doubt you'll get it working through USB. I dont think the Infinity has drivers for that.
There's tons of solutions to get it going over wifi, and if you want something a little more power efficient try a combination of PDANet for Tablets on the Infinity and FoxFi on your phone to tether over bluetooth.
Sigh... the entire point to this thread being in the Development forum is to develop the drivers needed to make it work.

Unfortunately, unless you have already developed such app, this post does not belong in the development forums, which are for apps/ROMs that have already been developed, not for posts about apps/ROMs that you would like to have developed.

Already posted in Q&A. Pretty much the sames answers you received there. Dude, just wifi/BT tether... No one is gonna hack the wireless network on your phone to get free 4G internet.
Obviously I need to go elsewhere, then. I thought this would be good place to go for aid with app development, and instead all I get is 'you're dumb, do it this way' and 'Development is for apps already developed, not for those in development' as seems to be the case. Thanks anyway, I suppose.
Not trying to give you a hard time and certainly didn't mean to insinuate you're dumb. You're just asking for something that doesn't really NEED to be done and really can't be done (at the moment). There are already lots of good solutions for what you're ultimately looking to do, tether your phone to your tablet to access the net. Being stubborn about doing it via USB just doesn't make sense (unless you're not really being honest about wanting simple internet access and you need USB tether for other reasons). Who would want wires when you can do it wirelessly? Wires suck... lol.
Hopefully you'll stick around and enjoy the community. Lots of smart nice people here ready to lend a hand.
Grave digging
I've found a need for this or at least a work around. I work offshore and internet is restricted to 1 device per person. My tablet cannot tether back to my PC but my mobile can. I can usb tether my phone to my PC while on wifi. However you cannot bluetooth tether while on wifi so my tablet becomes useless. Please if you're thinking I should just bluetooth or wifi tether using my data I will ask you to log off life and KYS because as I said earlier I work offshore there is no data. Is there a way to bluetooth tether while on wifi??

It does have the drivers for it, but it requires a change in the framework to allow it to use the USB device when you plug it in. I have this enabled in cm.

[Q] Wifi Tether on TMO is Working, what's wrong?

Okay, I am sure this has been talked to death by some people here....but....I have been trying to get WIFI Tether to work between my HTC One S (rooted TMO) and Wifi Galaxy Note 10.1, no such luck until tonight. Now it WORKS!
I have spent days searching threads and everyone had the same advice, go with Barnancle or Foxfi....I downloaded both...Barnancle never would run right and I could never see it on my Tablet. Foxfi...well, after I read that I had to download stuff to the tablet, I gave up on using it. So, back to square one....Wifi Tether has worked for the IPOD and I decided to give it another try....
I went the route of downloading Google Chrome to my HTC
I downloaded User Agent Switcher Chrome addon and changed User to XOOM
I then started Wifi Tether made sure my setting was Generic ICS(JB)
I also checked on Routing Fix
Then restarted Wifi Tether
The tablet recognized it and connected!!!!!!!!!
I was able to access the internet!
Now, here is my question.....What am I missing?....This seemed to easy and I fear I am missing something, am I supposed to run Chrome on the Tablet? User Agent Switcher on the Tablet, too?....Keep Google Chrome open on HTC while WiFi Tether is connected?...These are the details I never found answers to....
Otherwise, do I just turn on Wifi Tether and connect my Tablet as I would to any Wifi?....and this should be the usual process... I spent so long looking for an answer I feel that this is too easy of a solution, not that I want it to be more complicated .
I don't use tethering too much, but it comes in handy when trying to keep the kids quiet in non child friendly places.
Any advice would be great. Thanks:fingers-crossed:
I believe tmous gives a courtesy 200MB now before they redirect you to buy a tether plan. And their new price tiers include 500MB with the option to buy more. Wouldn't be surprised if they're allowing it to get people used to it so if/when they lock it down more people will buy it.
