Notes from a Rookie - Samsung Infuse 4G

My objective was to get bluetooth (Voice Dialing) working on my Samsung Infuse. I switched from iPhone and reliable bluetooth support was a must-have feature.
Being a rookie, I was overwhelmed by all the terminology. I had a lot of questions such as:
1. What are all the steps involved to install Voice Dialing?
See the steps below.
2. Is rooting similar to a tethered jailbreak for iPhone?
No, there is no concept of tethered in the Android world.
3. Would I have to install a new baseband that can never be undone?
Nope, Android is not an iPhone prison.
4. Does the GPS work on a rooted phone?
It works on my phone. I have not heard of this issue on Android phones.
5. So what is the downside of Rooting?
There is a very small chance of bricking the phone.
The automatic time setting with ATT does not work.
I had to switch to manual time setting but that is not a big issues.
There might be problems with HDMI output but I have not tested it.
Following are the four steps I followed:
Unlock and Root
I followed the steps in the post:

Some observations:
1. Samsung Kies is available at:
http://www.samsung.com/ca/support/m...softwaremanual.do?page=MOBILE.SOFTWARE.MANUAL
3. Problem with root.bat:
- The firt time I tried the script got stuck
- I had to kill the window (click the big red X)
- It worked fine on the second attempt
Modified 3e recovery
I followed the steps in the post:

Some observations:
1. I used root explorer:
- Learning adb shell requires some effort
- The Youtube video was a big help
Infused V1
I followed the steps in the post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1105413
Some observations:
1. First I installed Gingerbread:
- The "Voice Dialing" app is incompatible
- The app would crash regularly
2. I reverted to v1.6.0
- So far this ROM has been very stable
- All my music files were not impacted
- I did lose my contact information and apps
- I like it a lot better than the default stock ROM
Voice Dialing
I followed the steps in the post:

At the end of the journey, I realized it was much easier than I had expected. A great community and an an open architecture has made this possible . The only problem I saw was too much information.
I might post follow up comments if I run into any more issues.

Your info will help others.
But just for Voice Dialing you can get "Hands-Free Voice Dialer" from the market for free. Or pay for the full version to get extras that you probably won't be used.
The free version allows you to use all of it's features for a limited time, but Voice Dialing will always be enabled.

Truckerglenn,
I tried two commonly used bluetooth apps:
Hands-Free Voice Dialer
Vlingo Virtual Assistant
Both of these worked but were highly unreliable. There were many issues but the biggest problem I had was making multiple calls. The first call would work fine. For the next call the apps would get confused. The only way to resolve this problem was to kill the app and start all over again. This may not be possible when I am driving.
The above situation is more common than one might expect. I was with a client on the phone when the call got dropped because of poor signal. Now I had to take the next exit, find a parking and apologize to the client.
With "Voice Dialing" I have not seen any major issues so far. I have made multiple calls successfully and the voice recognition is fairly accurate.
I am interested in the experience other members have had with the various bluetooth apps. I am wondering if the problem is in my bluetooth headset as opposed to the app. I have a Motorola bluetooth headset that I have been using for an year now with my iPhone with no problems. I don't remember the model number and the print on the headset is all blurred.

I'm a truck driver and use. Blue Parrot headset. The only trouble that I've had with the the Hands Free is if I use the No Lock widget.
Myself, I've had trouble with Voice Dialer, which is now included with AT&T's Gingerbread.
Cranky...

Umm for all the voice related features, i use Vlingo... same thing as siri really. reads text back to you too. so it should work over bluetooth.

Audible Player Skin

For those who like audio books like me, I've made a skin for the Audible Player. It's a similar theme of the WM Dialer skin with Dutty's 7b Non-touch ROM. If you've seen the default skin for this player... you understand why I made this.
It is a subscription service and I recommend it. I just don't have time to read as much as I'd like to I listen to these audio books on my commute to work. It's not very easy reading books on a 240x320 screen.
If you want to know more:

Here are some screens of the skin:

========================
Installation
1. Run APWMInstall.exe from your PC while synch to your device (if you don't have Audible Installed)
- Installs AudibleAir to download your books files to your PDA
- Installs AudiblePlayer
2. Download your audiobooks to your device or storage card for playback (need Audible account)
3. Place Audibleplayer_Kaisergreyskin.cab on your device and double click. Cab will begin install. Select to install to the same place you installed the AudiblePlayer (I recommend installing the programs to your Device since the memory requirement is low for the programs. You can have your books files defaulted to your storage card separately).
4. Open Audible Player
- Select Menu >> AudiblePlayer Skins...
- Kaiser_Grey should be now installed and selectable.
I was absolutely thrilled to see this skin. I had made a couple of skins for previous versions, but never got around to this one.
I'm getting ready to install in now.
I'm curious, I've been having problems with downloading full books to my ATT Tilt (after having easily and successfully downloaded hundreds to my 6700).
I've recently flashed to one of Dutty's ROMs and am hopeful it will fix it. Have you experienced any problems?
Also, I have an old utility called btaudio that opens the audio channel so you can listen via bluetooth, would be happy to post it if appropriate. I usually map it to a hard key.
I can tell you that this application posted on this thread works perfectly on Duttys 7b hydrid ROM. There is also another way to do this.. by using Audible Manager and linking it with the free Micro$oft Reader... although I haven't tried this. Now that I made this skin.. it looks really nice and maTches the WM6 dialer on the 7b ROM, so I'll probably stick with it.
If you wouldn't mind, could you post the bt utility here. I could search for it, but it would make it convenient for anyone else who wanted to try this out. Thanx.
I've installed your version and it seems to be working better (at least it appears to be downloading a book correctly while connected to ActiveSync).
Are you able to download full books via the wireless data connection/AudibleAir? I experimented with it a bunch and found that it wouldn't work unless I selected 60 minutes or less.
I figured it may have been something to do with the ATT network (I was formerly Verizon) or a problem dealing with my 8GB SD card.
Just copy it to the device and it can be run directly from there. If you name it something different, you can even use a voice command to launch it.
By the way, I've had contact with somebody on the development team and they indicate that there 'is some new stuff in the pipe (finally)' and that they hope to have something to give us in early 2008.
Happy Listening!
Here is the btaudio file.
Oh wow... I didn't notice that. My wifi won't download through audible air, even though the internet is working fine with my Opera Browser. hmmmm? I tried several download settings.
I turned off wifi and was able to download a 2MB book over 3G(HSDPA) in about 10 seconds... very fast. I used quality of 2, 60 minutes, storage card... no problem.
Don't know why?
If you hear anymore about audible development pls post... there's probably not huge interest on this board for that but I'll be watching.
Thanks for the btaudio btw
@smuook,
I installed Dutty's v3 last night and it includes a BTAudioToggle App that I was able to map to the PTT button. A little better than btaudio in that it turns it on or off.
I recall years ago participating in a thread where that one was cooked, but forgot all about itl
@smuook, check your PM.
For those having failures downloading full books via AudibleAir, I've found that turning off Direct Push email and/or Active Sync helps a BUNCH.

[DEV GUIDE]The purpose of HtcLoggers.apk

[NOTE: This information was passed to me by an anonymous source.]
***Thanks also to Joeykrim for helping me verify a few things on how this works - and for testing it out***
A lot of people have removed the due to not knowing what it did, and concern over the "big brother" possibility. Here is EXACTLY what the app is for, and how we in the dev community can utilize it. I have included the file for you to reinstall as needed. Installing it into /system/app will autoload it for you.
It's purpose is to provide logging of various aspects of the device when you're having issues, and help you identify exactly where those issues are occurring. This includes:
dumpstate (bug report)
dumpsys
Device logs
Radio logs
Events log
Kernel log
To use it:
Dial *#*#HTCLOG#*#* (*#*#482564#*#*)
You're presented with 3 options (Collect Log Files, Snapshot Report, System Loggers)
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
- Collect Log Files gives you options to move the log files to the SD card
- Snapshot Report let's you run "dumpstate" and "dumpsys"
- System Loggers gives you some options
- Device Logger
- Radio Logger
- Events Logger
- Kernel Logger
Enable the logs you want, then enable "Auto Start Logging"
- you need to do this in order to have the logs start
-
Hit the "Back" key twice to return to the home screen
Reboot and then wait for the issue to reproduce
When the issue does occur make note of what time the issue occured
Copy the logs off of your SD card and and find the time the issue occured and begin to analyze what was happening
When you're done, don't forget to go back into the HTC Logging and disable logging
Reboot to clear the HTC Logging auto start
I installed and pushed the dialer code on cm7 rc0 and it ran. I wonder if this would help the devs with accessing the radio thru a dialer code and app in AOSP, like htc uses? Its the app itself that responds to dialer codes.
Nice find i always wonder the hell was the apk for

It will definitely provide anyone - especially devs - with information necessary to track down the source of a problem. Glad to know it works on CM7.

No problem. Me too - and figured others could use it.
Wow nice, no more adb logcat for some things, thanks
Well I tried it on a HTC MyTouch 3G 1.2(Magic) running Cyanogenmod 6.1(2.2.1) and could not get it to work. When I entered the last star in the sequence, the screen went black and then back to the dialer. Any ideals?
Ok it just automatically rebooted, removing apk.

Yeah this is in EVO 4G for a reason. On new versions of HTC phones they will probably have this - but right now it's only the EVO that does.

UI improved
Better help
Added debugging menu item
Fixed sound options not returning to default on some devices
1.1 - more better stuff
Totally rewrote app
More options
Better UI
Oh come on - only 5? This thing is gold
9 - a little better than 5, but still pretty bad!
Not many takers then - looks like i need to do some bumpin...
26 lucky people
I like this but it has trouble with the lockscreen - sometime it appears then is overriden by the lockscreen...
Im looking into this issue!
Hey ftgg99, just installed and going to give this a try! Could you give a breif explanation of the minimum, maximum & step intervals please? I looked for a "help" option within the app to explain. I'm mostly interested in the auto call back feature for when Att drops my call. (I know the second it happens now with Vibralert!) Also, will the app request root the first time it is needed? Ive installed and changed settings but it hasn't requested root yet. Hopefully I get a chance to test this soon, just waiting on a busy signal or call disconnect. Thanks.
I, too, would be interested in a description of the interval settings. I installed, gave root permissions, and I've had a coupler of busy signals with nothing happening from Redial Me. Running Android 2.2
Okay I definitely just got a busy signal but RM did not request root. Turning the on/off does not prompt root either. I will uninstall and try again after I get some clarification for the intervals. -Atrix

Looks like you're having troubles as well. I've been calling a radio station all day to try to win tickets to a Willie Nelson concert for my father in law (huge fan-fathers day, ...yeah.) AND I've gotten a lot of busy signals, as expected. I, on the other hand, did get prompted for Root Access upon installation. I also verified that Superuser remembered "Redial Me" and it does have root access.
Haven't received a single pop up, prompt to redial on busy, or anything.
If this can get up and going and get the bugs worked out it will be exactly what I've been looking for for a LONG time! How awesome would it be if someone had an app that would continuously keep redialing until call connection for radio giveaways and promotions? Pretty sweet!
Also great for contacting people who are constantly on the phone with no call waiting... can sneak in between calls!
Let me know if there are any kind of logs I can pull or anything I can do that would help in the development for this. As of now, the app is doing absolutely nothing for me but I will keep it installed for logging/testing purposes.
I installed .apk, enabled Redial Me, .. tried it out... nothing. Rebooted, tried again, busy signal but nothing again...
Android 2.2, GladiAtrix 1.83 P-Rom for Motorola Atrix
Ill be working on a complete overhaul in the next few day - im taking the app over from a rather lackluster apprentice we have just let go. Many changes are coming!
As for details of the settings, they are as follows:
Minimum interval - the time after first engaging before the app starts redialing.
Maximum interval - the longest interval before a redial is made
Step interval - Redial Me incrementally increases the time it takes to launch a redial at this rate
Does that make sense?
Yes that makes sense. Thanks for the explanation.
Just this morning on a reboot RM (finally) prompted me for root.. I have rebooted many times since install. Sadly the prompt lasted about 3 seconds instead of the usual 10 (prob cause the phone was booting), I only had time to read not accept. Uninstalled and looking forward to the overhaul.
The easiest way to reset superuser is to go into the su app and forget whatever app youre having trouble with - then start it again and wait for the prompt.
How soon can we expect a new release? I'm excited to see this come together. Any idea why I'm not getting prompted to redial after receiving a busy signal?
Next few days... and no idea, better just write the app from scratch...
Done. Demo is up as well. If you were early to the party, PM me ill send you the xda version beta for free!
What do you mean with early to the party I just waited for the new version to test it since i read about it
i'll join in, i'm always trying to win stuff from the radio

[App] Root Call Blocker needs testers

Hello guys, im the developer of Root Call Blocker, an advanced call and SMS blocking app for rooted phones.
The app's home is here at XDA:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1051274
We have had multiple reports that blocking is not working sometimes on the American sammy phones, so we need some nice people to do some testing.
You can use the Groups function of the Lite version to do the testing - it gives you almost everything youd want from the app anyway.
Please post comments here, but also use the "Write to us" dialog in settings.
This is great, my bug with calls comng through sometimes when call waiting with more than 1 number was fixed in 165! Thanks a lot!
Enjoy... and remember, an update is always just around the corner!
Could you guys please test the following behavior for me:
1. How the app behaves when a blocked number attempts to connect during call waiting
2. How a blocked caller is handled when "Dont answer" is set as the reject method and you are currently on the phone and have not enabled blocked call vibrate notifications within the app itself
Dont forget to send logs with descriptions as well.
Come on people, i really need some feedback on this!
Come on guys - feedback will help me help you!
Awesome, working perfectly here thanks. Dont thing ive ever had issues with this app (maybe once had to do a manual license check)...
Thanks, could you please test the behavior i described above? Its very important!
Guys, an update has been rolled out. It contains an important new workaround thast needs to be tested.
It may help those people who have data issues, especially on LTE enabled phones sometimes.
Please help me test this by installing the app, rebooting and waiting for data to return with the screen on. Please wait 3 minutes at least before sending logs via "Write to developer" in the app.
Dont forget to include a description. Thanks!
Working perfectly for me! Thanks, this is absolutely top class. Ive been using CM as well, great app too.
Enjoy. And dont forget that im always checking these threads, ao comments and suggestions are welcome!
Any issues to report?
Maybe found a bug... just maybe
This actually sort of saved my a$$ so not sure if I should list it as a bug or not LOL anyways I'm using Miui on a HTC Desire Z and I loaded my root blocker pro and added a password and put it in hidden mode. I always back up my blocking settings so I forgot how to load root blocker pro when it's hidden, so I went into the settings into manage applications, then I uninstalled root call blocker and re-installed it and said no to the restore, got into the setting and restored manually. Could be a security flaw, what do you think?
There is no way to prevent this other than taking your sd card out. Its an android flaw.
Yes, its a problem with android itself!
Any issues to report?
Not sure if it the app or not. I have an evo shift. Im using the free version and ever since i installed rcb i lose all service sometimes, data and phone. A reboot fixes it. Like i said i never had this problem before i installed rcb. On a lighter note it works great awesome app! I will be buying when i figure out if it rcb or not
Supremly transmikked! Sense in disguise
RCB will only interfere with data at first run, so it isnt the app. Bad radio, bad signal, pretty much lots of possible reasons...
Ok, i did find that it is blocking all picture mail(mms). Is there a setting to fix it?

[APP][2.3+] Vcustomize 1.0

An app to make calls and record voice memos without having to unlock the screen or look at it.
After years of shying away from the new OS (WP, android, iOS) because of lack of control, I decided to give up my WM6.5 phone and write an app myself.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vivekiny2k.vcustomize

Vcustomize lets you make calls, record and listen to voice memo, turn on flash light, and tell time while the phone stays in its cover. Since Android does not allow keypress access to background services, I use proximity sensor to know when the phone is in cover and only then I bring the actual app up. This way it's almost invisible to the user. The sensor can be overridden though.
It's not perfect, but I am working with whatever resources android provides. I use it daily and could not live without it, despite the shortcomings. So I decided others should be able to benefit from it as well. I have tried to make the description as simple as possible, have uploaded a demo video, and made the app free with ad-support.
I hope to add more customizing options if there is enough interest.
Please send feedback and suggestions at [email protected]
I have released version 2.01. It includes many features available on the screen when phone is locked.
----------------------------------------------
2.01
- added flashlight
- added review calls (need directory configured in /sdcard0/vcustomize/callrecordings.txt)
-----------------------------------------------
update history
2.00 - fixed force close problem. App runs without crashing.
- added options on touchscreen to
- make calls (need directory configured in /sdcard0/vcustomize/contacts.txt. format is "name|number")
- record voice memos
- interval shooting ( can be termed spy cam)
- backup files (need backup script configured in /sdcard0/vcustomize/backup.txt. format is "source|destination|delete-source-after-copying-flag")
Going to give this a go thanks for this!
Release version 2.02. I have added timers and alarms (you lose them if phone reboots), full screen postview, and some general stability improvements
It took me two hours to add option to turn off data and wifi when screen is turned off. My android reported 4% battery loss in 6 hours, that's 150 hrs or 6 days of idle time! This was with a bunch of apps and messengers running in background (obviously deprived of data).
The only downside is you will not get any updates from network based apps (gtalk, messenger, email, whatsapp etc) when screen is turned off. but they will get updated in seconds after turning on the screen.
I'd really like to try this app but play store says my device is not compatible. I'm running gingerbread 2.3.4
