First of all, this is meant to be an informative post, not a bash fest...
I'm kinda new to Android. Tested a lot of models before finally getting a T-Bolt the day after release.
I've used a ton of Sense and AOSP based ROMs since.
I've kept up as best I can on the MIUI thread, and it looks like they have a dedicated following like most of the popular ROMs.
Can someone please give me a cliff notes version of the highlights of the MIUI series ROMs?
In other words...what's the big deal about them (Again, I don't mean to sound like a jerk when I say that, I'm looking for knowledge and info...)
It looks to me like an iOS kinda clone/software the two times I tried it on my phone. Is there no app drawer, etc?
Those are the kinda things I"m interested in...objective thoughts.
I didn't feel this tread belonged in dev section by any means...
Thanks!!
MIUI is like Sense/Blur. It's a complete UI overhaul of the entire Android operating system. Although there is no app drawer, you can simply switch to your favorite launcher (ADW ex, Launcher 7, GoLauncher, etc.) Outside of that, MIUI is fast. Very fast. There are lots of themes out there for it (excited for Vicious to get the ICS MIUI working.)
Yea no app drawer like iphone but you can use folders to organize things. Its like iOS on steroids it merges the best of Android and the best of iOS. I ran MIUI for a good couple weeks and switched back to sense only because of the MMS not working. (I have 3 kids and a baby on the way so me and my wife send photos to each other alot.)
But when I did run MIUI it was fantastic very fast and smooth looked good settings was all there right in front of you. You can't really go wrong its based off AOSP so think of Cyanogen or Vanilla Android so there is no sense widgets or anything just have to find stuff you want from the market.
IF you can buy bootmanager (i think it scalled) and run more than one rom and test htem back and forth. Its great ill go back once MMS is fixed for now Sense is really good im on Chingy's Gingeritis 3D atm
I played around with it for about 30 minutes today...it is fast.
That being said, I'll wait till MMS is available as well.
Thanks for the input...much appreciated!!!
Sure no Problem its a fantastic rom. Vicious is making the ICS version that should be out sometime today I'll probally flash it and run it for a week and be sad at no mms and go back to Gingeritis lol
Oh and superb battery life as well. My extended battery just got twice of it's juice after switching to MIUI.

MMS has worked just fine for me on MIUI using Go SMS. I use the stock SMS app since its themed with whichever you theme you choose for the rom, but use Go to send/receive MMS.
Battery life on MIUI has been the best I've experienced by far. I've tried just about every rom (Sense & Aosp) for the bolt, minus maybe 2 or 3 of them. Even if I chose not to use one for a daily driver, I always at least try the newest latest and greatest thing. I've been off the charger for roughly 15 hours and I'm sitting at 81% battery right now, using the stock battery.
I'd been hooked on BAMF Bliss and Synergy Eternity which are both Sense 3.5, and when I tried MIUI when Vicious released it I had only planned on playing with it, then going back to one of the 3.5 roms... obvious to say, that didn't happen. The battery life, speed, smoothness, and ability to customize won me over.

How do you get go to work with mms??
My name is Revos I'm a recovering flashaholic running Liquid Gingerbread 3.0
GoMMS is only capable sending pics and audio. it will not recieve. also the recipient of the mms only recieves a url.
Not necessarily true. I've been sending and receiving MMS with Go SMS pro for days, as has my wife on her Evo running miui.
Also, search xda for "alt app drawer " app if you want an app drawer. Its a free apk. You'll still have to place your. Apps in one folder, or make several for categories. I personally like having an app drawer on my dock.

If you had to pick the top 3 things that are better in MIUI than AOSP what would they be?
MIUI is so fast its crazy, I love all the built in customization as well. Beyond that there is unlimited support out there for themes and what not, and being cross platform it is very easy to go out and find information. There are very cool features baked in ( pressing home from the lock screen and holding it turns on camera leds for a flashlight for instance ) I swear when I first started messing with miui on my INC and DX I was ALWAYS finding new features. It makes D1's feel like current devices its so fast.
As far as an app drawer, I have bounced between placing all my apps in one folder and putting that in my dock, to organizing them on my home screens, to bundling them all into separate folders. Right now My home screen to the left of my main screen is filled with 12 folders,
Chat;
Google talk/voice group me
File Mgmt;
File Explorer ( miui's awesome file manager ) downloads drop box and docs to go
Bench Marks;
Speed Test and quadrant standard
Widgets;
BW, swype installer, swiftkey x, pure grid calender, multi icon, hackers keyboard, circle battery, and voice search short cuts
then notes, social, gadgets ( bar code scanner and such ) trivia apps, news, root tools, tools, and media.
I could get by with less, but I needed an even number for appearance reasons lol.
Then I have a folder in the middle of my dock with my most use applications, gmail, email, market, facebook, ebay, paypal, ect...
Never going back to another rom now that its stable, just have people email me pictures. MMS will come soon enough
I'm guessing this has the same problems of aosp builds?
1. No nfl network
2. Wonky GPS?
Yes, on nfl mobile. But on gps it works pretty good for me. Navigation and what not. Just a problem with weather widget. Which some times give wrong location but can be fixed easily by setting location manually

I have not personally flashed this ROM on my phone (likely will now that it is fully ported), but the excellent battery life is one of the highlights of this ROM, based on what I have heard from my friends who run it on their phones and what I have read on multiple forums. When I flash it, I will report back my results.
14 hours and at about six percent on a rezond battery.... I'm somewhat of a heavy user though, and I do not take any steps to make battery life better, all my email accounts check every 15 mins, screen brightness all the way up ect...

All these positive reviews. I think I'll have to give it a go. Ran it daily on my INC, hadn't on my Thunderbolt as i waited for stability.
It seems like that point was now reached.
Just want to mention that I've been trying to kill my battery, I have left the screen on and have tethered to wirelessly to my ipad, and my phone has only dropped 1 percent in the last half hour

So, despite weeks of rock-solid performance from Inspired Ace, I got bored over the weekend and decided to install CM7, since people talk a lot about getting such great battery life from it, and because it appears to be kind of the "gold standard" in the Android community.
I gotta say, I'm not impressed. I really miss how intuitive Sense was, not to mention the excellent functionality of many of its components that AOSP-based stuff just doesn't have. 2 examples: the clock app and the dialer app. There are more, but that's not the point of the thread.
I figured that since there are so many people running AOSP/CM7 over a Sense-based ROM that there must be something I'm overlooking, so I wanted to hear from some folks what it is they love about non-sense roms. Is it the aesthetics? Are there functions in CM7 you really like/need and can't get with Sense?
Please don't say "It's personal preference." That is obvious. What I'm looking for is the reason someone prefers one to the other.
It slows the phone down. Plain and simple. I personally like sense but its boring after awhile. So I load Go Launcher and widget launcher. Plus I prefer GO SMS and GO Contacts/Dialer so in the end sense just ends up as bloat.
I know I like to be different from everyone else...someone asks to look at my phone, I let them, but they don't say much because its standard android. When I am running AOSP people are curious how this and that on a phone with native stock Froyo.
Why be the same to the millions of other android users? People who rooted their phone want to make it known to everyone who looks at their phone and make them look twice.

For me, its about customibility and usefulness. After all, being able to customize is what makes Android great. I do not like the sense launcher because I want to be able to customize it to a configuration that is actually useful. Aosp or miui type of notification panels have more convenient options that I actually use. The sms of sense is plain and boring. Sense isn't all that bad, but once you start exploring what's out there, it opens your eyes to bigger and better things.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
I love Sense, always have, it's one of the more eye-candy oriented Android skins. I remember waiting patiently and then being so saddened when the Sense port to the Galaxy S line died away.
That being said, I always keep either LauncherPro ar ADW EX on the phone so that I can run the super clean Ultralinx themes that I like as well. Sense is great, variety is better.
So the idea is that instead of having Sense do everything it does and hogging resources, you just find single app replacements for things you like about it?
I tried Go Dialer/Contacts and it's awesome! Everything I loved about Sense dialer!
I also started messing around more with CyanogenMod Settings and found some really cool stuff, like the lock screen settings. I'd like to find a way to get the Sense look back in the notification bar, like the wifi/cell bars. Any ideas?
I can't stand the Sense dialer. It's ridiculous that I have to press 4 times just to get to my favorites.
I liked Sense 2.5 on my old AT&T Tilt 2 (Windows Mobile) very much. When I switched to the HTC Inspire I felt that something was missing and that there was not much Sense past the clck and weather widget.
Using SPB Shell 3D now.
Sense has gotten a lot better with all the revisions. That said its still pretty bloated and slows down the speed of updates to a snails pace compared to CM.
Agreed with all above. I always install Launcher Pro anyway so I loose all the sense stuff anyway. My only problem with cm7 and why I'm not running it now is that I love the htc music player. People say, oh there is some just like it on the market, but I'm sorry this is the first phone I have owned were right out of the box you turn srs sound on and whammo instant awesome sounding music lol
Other than that, after awhile away from sense with a different launder you really start to not miss sense. Its one of the best, if not the best stock launcher out there but really the eye candy only lasted a bit with me. Sense is really laggy with a few widgets open also.

Hi there, I'm not even sure if this is the right place to ask it but I'll shoot anyway.
I own the Samsung Galaxy S, and the one thing I liked and found really handy about the roms for this phone is that on the pull down drawer they have shortcuts to Wifi, GPS etc etc you know the drill...
Now, I was thinking of getting the Nexus S for my girlfriend, except that I wanted to pre-load it with a custom rom for maximum speed less she come complaining to me that her Nexus S is slow, and as I found with the stock rom, such functionality like that in the SGS can't be found on the Nexus S stock.
I'm here to ask if there are any good roms that have them or modifications that allow for that, because I took a look at the "famed" Axura's rom and it doesn't have it :x
Bear in mind that the rom has to be stable as well so I don't think Nightly builds would be good for her to use in the long run since she knows nothing of rooting etc etc
CM7 has Power Widgets.
My impression of CM7 seems to be a bit bloated as compared to other roms though, and not to mention a video shows the drawer as a "pull-up" drawer instead of a "pull-down"
In terms of speed is there a faster better one with the same pull down drawer? which is also stable. I know its asking much. :X
Here's a great option:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122127
It's a lightweight, fast, stock 2.3.4 AOSP-based ROM with some of the CM tweaks added (status bar power widget, improved widget picker, optional battery percentage, etc.).
It is my personal favourite. I've been running it for over a month with no complaints.
Interesting interesting interesting thank you for that suggestion. Will definitely consider it. Thanks

Yeah agreed. The CM today isn't the same CM I knew back during the G1 days. It is way too mainstream.
But I consistently use it because of the features that are added. Battery on CM7 has not been as good. It's doable but it could be better and there isn't really a "dedicated developer" for the crespo for CM7.
Oxygen is a good alternative. Only thing I dislike about Oxygen is the contacts. The call button is missing on the right.
+1 for oxygen. CM and Nexus S do not play well together from my experience.
TB is my very first android, and i have come a long way, but maybe not long enough
as i can not for the life of me understand why everyone nut over the rom dubbed as cm7?
why???
I have been on almost single rom on the TB, and countless updates on each of them..
what is so special about CM7? do you prefer running linux?? why not run windows 3.1 on your quad core computers?
is it nostalgic?? or does it simply remind you of your ex girlfriend that you loved?
I know the dev team for the CM7 works very hard but so does every other dev.
So is it because cyanogen mod are simply better developers, and with their code other devs could build their rom with their findings..
i need to know, in order to get to the promise land
I guess some people hate anything other than stock android. But tbh I can't stand stock android. It is so boring and not polished.sense is so nice. But cyanogenmod is really fast and responsive. And battery life is a factor
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
i'm sure a full fledged cm7 has good battery life.
not the current one. everything else seems to have better battery life
Its not bloated with extra crap. I love sense but to me CM7 always seems to be the fastest rom I run on my TB. It started out really popular with the TB because it was the only way for people to get gingerbread on their TB. It has grown so much and is finally, in my opinion nearly perfect. Its been a great trip and people have stayed with it till now and it has been well worth the wait. Stock android(for the most part) is a nice breath of fresh air.

It's not really stock android. It's close, but there's many improvements that work well with the system. OMFGB is much more vanilla than CM7. It's also 100% opensource (unlike sense roms and aosp roms like miui) which is useful if you care about more than the rom because you like to hack around on the source and don't trust certain roms like miui (no offense, but I am not using a rom made by chinese with no source given, just too creepy for me as far as how much control you are giving them aside from the fact they give back nothing to the community).
For the OP's information, there's plenty of information out there (including articles on wired and many screen casts on youtube) about CM7, besides their own site/wiki/forums/irc channel
there is much about cm7 that you don't know.
start here for a very small list of features... http://www.cyanogenmod.com/about/features
but this list barely scratches the surface. none of my favorite features are even listed here, and the cyanogen settings menu has literally hundreds (thousands?) of additional modifications you can make to your device.
i flashed cm7 for the first time about a month ago, and i won't ever be able to run sense again. i've been converted

yeah tons of features you only wish other roms had most of the time. I love the media track skip via the volume buttons with the screen off (similar to what blackberry does). Makes it way easier to switch songs or repeat one when you are running.
Its cause we want android without all the battery hogging and performance issues associated with crap like motoblur, sense, touchwiz etc. Plus cm7 has so much more features than being basically a asop rom. Its provides a lot of customization with your phone, which is what andrioid is all about.

I like the simplicity of stock-ish Android and all the tweaks and customizations CM offers. Sense is nice and all but way too heavy for my enjoyment.
I've only used CM7 on my nook color and was very impressed by its responsiveness and options. I heard of using Android OS's with overlapping UI but I figured this would only hamper on the overall user experience. I'm def open to different versions of Android for tablets. Any suggestions?
Hello my name is _________, and I'm addicted to CM7..............
Another cool factor is that it's available for so many different phones. I had CM7 on my EVO with Sprint. When I got my Thunderbolt I immediately rooted it and flashed CM7. There is a CM7 build for every major carrier in the U.S., So as long as you chose a supported phone your not stuck with some crappy user interface or an older version of Android. The main reason I chose the Thunderbolt over other Verizon 4G phones was that there was a CM7 ROM for it, but then again I'm an addict.

- swipe notification bar to adjust brightness
- lockscreen gestures
- custom long press home/menu/search options
- long press back to kill current app
- hundreds of themes easily switched via Theme Chooser
- incoming calls in background when screen on
- permission management
- any app to sd
- built in performance and overclocking settings
...just to name a few. The real question is why do so many people have such a deep hatred of CM7? If you don't like the ROM you don't like it. Why make such a big stink out of it? If others want to like it then let them be

i remember putting CM on the first phone i rooted, the MyTouch 3G... and it was the only one i ever used on that phone. This time around, i've experimented and tried out just about every single ROM for the TB. This time i would say that Synergy is my fav only because i managed to get better battery life with it then CM7(and its overclocked).
that plus, i know its ridiculous but i prefer for the green light to come on when the battery is at 100%, not 90%(yes i know that's just how AOSP ROMs are). im just use to going "oh green light, time to unplug".

who says we hate cm7? I just said it wasn't the best thunderbolt ROM. It's quite buggy as far as cm7 builds go.
I guess my point is that if this is your first time using cm7, would you be defending it as much.

I think he was just looking for pros and cons of the ROM more than calling it out.
Thread is not titled
"CM7 Sucks!"
I rarely use CM, but I think it is a really good ROM, with a good team behind it. Also, basically anyone who is into rooting/romming/modding their Android phone owes something to the CM team, in one way or another. I personally don't like it because, and this is hard to explain, it is almost too good. Lol. It feels like a stock, out-of-box software. I know there are tons of settings, and it runs great often times, but it just lacks the pizazz that I'm looking for. Not like overly flashy drag your phone down kinda stuff, but just a little something extra.
That being said, I, again, really appreciate the rom. I am currently using it on my Thunderbolt until we get some ROMs based off of the OTA if it ever comes, and have also used it on my D1 and Incredible.
What is the best Rom for MYTOUCH 4G
Depends on what you want out of your phone
I have an HTC Glacier (MT4G). I have played around with many, many ROMS for the phone. I have even meesed around with the 2.3.4 leaked "official" ROM. In my experiences, the Cyanogen MOD 7 ROM has given me the most flexibility and best battery life. I flashed CM7 and uninstalled the ADW home replacement that comes with it and installed ADW Ex. I use my phone to listen to Pandora for at least 8 hrs at work, send roughly 250 text messages a day, make a few short calls and play around looking things up online periodically. My daily activities allows me to get almost 36 hours of battery life before a charging. With ADW EX and a fw other apps.. the phone is exactly how I want it. Hope this helps.
Thank You
Okay Thanks I will try it
Royal Ginger 3.0 is another one that I use a lot. It is a build off of CM7.. just a few other features and doesn't come with ADW. It does have a few additional apps tho. Either way.. They are both pretty cool.

Which Rom is a personal preferance.
I currently run F1 Innovation, Fast, Stable and smooth. Not sure about tethering.

Still i haven't installed it but I read that CyanogenMod 7 works flawlessly on the Infuse. I read you can use it to connect usb devices to your phone so i guess it can do pretty anything, tethering included.
The only thing that seems to work crappy is audio through bluetooth but i bet it's not a big problem : bluetooth is one of the most stupid and unsecure tecnologies ever invented.
You will find on this forum tons of informations about roms...just read it!

Don't install a Samsung based rom, which is everything but CM7 or MIUI. Both CM7 and MIUI are AOSP based. MIUI is too much like iOS for my liking. I have been running CM7 on my infuse since I got it, and before that on my inspire, and before that on my captivate. CM7 is the only way to go.
For what it's worth, I'm running CM7, the newest nightly on 1/19. Very stable (some apps I had while running stock Froyo or Infused 2.2.3? would force close alot, not on CM7, but it's a very selective few apps I use for work), very smooth, very fast, overclockable to at least 1.4 gHz for most people. Some people do 1.6 gHz but it's not stable for my phone. You can undervolt it by some amounts for that extra battery savings, and it's constantly having features added to it, like T9 dialing that I discovered was included (much MUCH love for this small thing).
For all the added features, I regularly go through my phone and make sure I don't have apps that do things that are now part of the phone, so I keep the app list short and sweet. Having redundant features means that 2 things are trying to do the same thing, and I'd rather punch out my battery more and more without giving up some conveniences I had Dialer One on my phone, and it's not that great looking, but I had it just for the T9 dialing. Once I saw that CM7 had a T9 dialing feature, I uninstalled Dialer One. The music app, while not as heavy on the eye candy, made me get rid of Doubletwist and Airsync. Airsync never really worked great, for me at least.
CM7 doesn't have fully working bluetooth on the Infuse, some people have trouble with auto brightness (my personal preference is that I'd rather use the status bar slider to adjust brightness), and HDMI out doesn't work. It also has some extra niceties, such as theming, a DSP Manager app (that controls audio levels and equalizers), and is pretty much always being updated.
The drop down bar can be customized almost entirely, and because bluetooth doesn't work, not that I want it, I got rid of that icon. I replaced it with a screen timeout toggle. It has many more options than that.
One thing, and I don't think this is CM7 exclusive, is that sometimes my text messages won't send. I'm using GOSMS as my messaging app until the stock messaging app starts sending ALL of my texts. MMS relies on a data connection so I tend to pull the drop down and enable that when I want to send a picture or download one. Once it starts working the same way, I'm uninstalling GOSMS because it tends to be heavy and sometimes lags up noticeably.
I don't use bluetooth, and I don't think I've ever opened that HDMI dongle packaging, much less tried to use it. While it would be nice if they functioned, I get from day to day without even thinking about those. Your mileage may vary.
I'll throw my support behind CM7. I briefly tried ZEUS, but switched back after a couple days.

The only way to get a rom that has everything working like it should is to flash an infused based rom ...NOT an aosp rom..... cm7 is good if you don't need Bluetooth....as cm7 and miui use a different bt stack then Samsung ...so in my opinion that issue wont be fixed....and they have been known to have data issues....flash ANY of the infuse based Rome if you want complete functionality....period

Like others say if you need BT audio or HDMI stick with Samsung roms. I could care less about both, i have been bouncing back and forth between CM7 and MIUI for months now whenever there is a noteworthy update. Both are very quick and clean in my opinion and you can't go wrong with either one. I have tried most Samsung roms available but they are always short lived on my device...they always feel as if lacking something. Props to the devs for making them available though!!!
thank guys for the responses.. I am currently running the cm7.. looks great and smooth but i got a few issues maybe its the phone itself.
first: seems like my internet/wifi doesnt stay on at times or its not using wifi even tho its turned on.
second: the browser seems to be very slow and it force closes at times maybe it the site that i go to. ESPN scoreboards, i bet a lot so i check scores frequently and open a lot of pages.
third: yeah, battery does seem to go fast maybe because of the excessive use of the web.
BTW do you guys have to put in any apns?? I didnt'.
I don't think it's your phone. I'm still new at this, but as I understand it, you can make/flash tweaks and different modems that may help with the issues you encounter. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm on cm7 and I keep going back to it everytime I flash something new. It just works the best for me. As for data issues, you need to setup the apn fix listed in n0ctrnl's compiled cm7 thread. It's in the original post I believe. Also I flashed the latest modem (uckl2) found in the sticky of development section for modems

Go to wifi settings, hit menu button and go to advanced. Under wifi sleep policy choose never. Should fix the wifi connection issues your having.
I've tried many, but Zeus is the best one that's fully functional (BT and HDMI).

Definately Zeus for now. It's snappy, everything works and theres even a few themes as well as an ICS launcher. All the AT&T bloat has been removed. I used to prefer stock, but Zeus made me convert. It's just more responsive than any other rom for the Infuse.
It's all a matter of personal preference. I've run about 12-15 different ROMs on my Infuse so far. I keep coming back to Sensation 1.1. I really like being able to edit my status bar.
I didn't care for the camera in CM7, but it is a very nice running ROM. Only thing I miss is not having an extended power menu.
Just play with a bunch of them until you find one you like.
