Hey guys. I've downloaded several different roms over the past week and have yet to find one I like. Maybe you guys could recommend one. I'm looking for good battery life (at least a whole day, about 10+ hours. I like some sense, mainly the dialer and contacts . For the app drawer I like launcher pro. working 4g would be nice. What are some rom/kernel combos that you could recommend? I have an evo. Thanks
P.s. I tried vaelpak but had really bad battery life, even with other kernels.
I think you've made a criteria that will make your selection easy, but since you've already downloaded them all try each for two days and eventually you'll come across one where you just know its for you. Personally, I use Elelinux's froyo 2.2.1 rom with Erasmux flykernell11 -really fast
How's the battery?
The best way is to test several ROMĀ“s till you get to your personal best
Ok, I was an early adopter of this phone bought it the day it came out July 18th. There are a great many things that disappoint me about this phone, main thing being lack of Froyo at the moment. I'm tired of waiting for samsung, I have little faith it will truely resolve my issues which are the following
In order to use wifi I must reboot my phone, this only occurred after the official JH7 was loaded on it through the over the air update that ATT did.
Constantly having lag all the time, and having apps running that I never ever use and dont want such as ATT Navigator, ATT Family Map, etc. I was able to root the phone and get rid of those but it really hasnt helped.
My stereo bluetooth headphones must be paired EVERY single time I want to use them, its not the headphones because they work perfectly with 4 other devices.
Of course the GPS, it sucks for everyone, any of these or all fix that? Samsung seems unwilling.
So maybe I'm wishing too much but I've watched almost every youtube review of the ROMs that are out there and theres a few details that stick out for things that I want in a rom so I'll detail them here and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction as to which one has the best combo.
1. froyo based, I need 2.2 for certain apps
2. I've heard theres different modems that can affect HSPA, I want fastest download and upload.
3. No wild color schemes, I dont like orange or green. I quite like the look of the phone I think samsung did a great job with the touchwiz and I know theres alot of you out there that perfer the "vanilla" versions of Android. I'm not one of those people. I really loved the look of the cognition rom and some of the things it had visually.
4. Overclocking would be nice but not at the expense of battery life, I'm right in the 24-30 hour range just as most are on here, better would be great if possible.
Go to romkitchen.org and build your own there. There are many threads about the advantages of one modem over another, and you can pick pretty much everything yourself. Then search for CLShortfuse's GPS fix and you'll be set.
Don't worry, its extremely easy

24-30 hours of what kind of use? There are a couple roms out there with stock appearance
Cognition
Perception
Precision
Andromeda

30 hours, you have to consider what you are asking. I want faster dl, no lag, better gps, but I don't want to eat any more battery. It is possible to get 30hrs of light to moderate use. Heavy use will yield 12-18
Andromeda v1.2 is a rom that is pretty vanilla....simple and has the things your looking for. You have to try roms that you think will be what you want.

+2 for Andromeda 1.2.
You can fix all of these if you root the phone. The best ROM out there is the Rom Kitchen (aka "Doc's ROMs") over at romkitchen.org. You can "cook up" your own ROMs using the specifications you want. This is what is so great about the ROM kitchen, especially when compared to the other ROMs like Cognition: you can pick what you want, and don't have to take whatever it was that someone else decided was best. For example, if you want the benefits of rooting but want to keep touchwiz, the ROM kitchen has an option for that. It also lets you pick things like the theme, boot animation, apps, etc. There are 5 captivate modems, and you might just have to experiment to see which one is best. I did this, and it was well worth it. The one that worked best for me was the XXJPP modem. Just load a seperate ROM with each of the different modems, flash each, and download a few things to see which is faster. Also check and see how well the GPS works on each.
Rooting will fix the lag, although one of the ROM kitchen kernels (Glitterball's Voodoo) will improve it even further. There is something called "Project Voodoo" which is a community of developers who build a kernel tweak called Voodoo which completely fixes the remaining lag issue (this is caused by the inefficient way the captivate organizes its folders), and also improves a few other features such as resolution.
You should go try out my ROM its small and fast and stable. I'm getting great battery life and DL/UL speeds. Give it a shot.
Here.
Well I decided to go with the serendipity 5.9, I love the speed, my upload and download speeds almost doubled, bluetooth and wifi finally work like they are supposed to!!
I do have a few complaints though, like the keyboard for texting, I loved the samsung one, I hate swipe any way i can get the stock one back on there?

However, if you're still interested in the Samsung keyboard, it's in here:

Holy crap what a difference. Everything actually works and is super fast. I would be on cloud nine right now except for the fact I'm probably soon getting the Atrix, this will def hold me over till then.
Im using Precision 3.5 with the monochrome 3.5 theme. Its running the latest suckerpunch kernel. For sure my favorite combo I've tried so far. Its really amazing, not to mention dev'd by ryude, who is one of the best!

Need to get started on custom icons and I think I want to try my hand at a completely custom framework. Anyway, I was perfectly happy with 'dipity out of the box, but since I've flashed Paragon this phone is AMAZING. It's quite fast and the battery seems to last forever. Just now recharging for the first cycle after having to reflash my rom w/o a full battery, so after today I'll know for sure how long the battery last, but initially it seems like I'll get a day or so with my daughter constantly playing video's and games all day.

I wouldn't mind knowing either. I'm thinking it's a different launcher, but I'm only guessing. Still kinda new to android.
So, despite weeks of rock-solid performance from Inspired Ace, I got bored over the weekend and decided to install CM7, since people talk a lot about getting such great battery life from it, and because it appears to be kind of the "gold standard" in the Android community.
I gotta say, I'm not impressed. I really miss how intuitive Sense was, not to mention the excellent functionality of many of its components that AOSP-based stuff just doesn't have. 2 examples: the clock app and the dialer app. There are more, but that's not the point of the thread.
I figured that since there are so many people running AOSP/CM7 over a Sense-based ROM that there must be something I'm overlooking, so I wanted to hear from some folks what it is they love about non-sense roms. Is it the aesthetics? Are there functions in CM7 you really like/need and can't get with Sense?
Please don't say "It's personal preference." That is obvious. What I'm looking for is the reason someone prefers one to the other.
It slows the phone down. Plain and simple. I personally like sense but its boring after awhile. So I load Go Launcher and widget launcher. Plus I prefer GO SMS and GO Contacts/Dialer so in the end sense just ends up as bloat.
I know I like to be different from everyone else...someone asks to look at my phone, I let them, but they don't say much because its standard android. When I am running AOSP people are curious how this and that on a phone with native stock Froyo.
Why be the same to the millions of other android users? People who rooted their phone want to make it known to everyone who looks at their phone and make them look twice.

For me, its about customibility and usefulness. After all, being able to customize is what makes Android great. I do not like the sense launcher because I want to be able to customize it to a configuration that is actually useful. Aosp or miui type of notification panels have more convenient options that I actually use. The sms of sense is plain and boring. Sense isn't all that bad, but once you start exploring what's out there, it opens your eyes to bigger and better things.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
I love Sense, always have, it's one of the more eye-candy oriented Android skins. I remember waiting patiently and then being so saddened when the Sense port to the Galaxy S line died away.
That being said, I always keep either LauncherPro ar ADW EX on the phone so that I can run the super clean Ultralinx themes that I like as well. Sense is great, variety is better.
So the idea is that instead of having Sense do everything it does and hogging resources, you just find single app replacements for things you like about it?
I tried Go Dialer/Contacts and it's awesome! Everything I loved about Sense dialer!
I also started messing around more with CyanogenMod Settings and found some really cool stuff, like the lock screen settings. I'd like to find a way to get the Sense look back in the notification bar, like the wifi/cell bars. Any ideas?
I can't stand the Sense dialer. It's ridiculous that I have to press 4 times just to get to my favorites.
I liked Sense 2.5 on my old AT&T Tilt 2 (Windows Mobile) very much. When I switched to the HTC Inspire I felt that something was missing and that there was not much Sense past the clck and weather widget.
Using SPB Shell 3D now.
Sense has gotten a lot better with all the revisions. That said its still pretty bloated and slows down the speed of updates to a snails pace compared to CM.
Agreed with all above. I always install Launcher Pro anyway so I loose all the sense stuff anyway. My only problem with cm7 and why I'm not running it now is that I love the htc music player. People say, oh there is some just like it on the market, but I'm sorry this is the first phone I have owned were right out of the box you turn srs sound on and whammo instant awesome sounding music lol
Other than that, after awhile away from sense with a different launder you really start to not miss sense. Its one of the best, if not the best stock launcher out there but really the eye candy only lasted a bit with me. Sense is really laggy with a few widgets open also.

First of all, this is meant to be an informative post, not a bash fest...
I'm kinda new to Android. Tested a lot of models before finally getting a T-Bolt the day after release.
I've used a ton of Sense and AOSP based ROMs since.
I've kept up as best I can on the MIUI thread, and it looks like they have a dedicated following like most of the popular ROMs.
Can someone please give me a cliff notes version of the highlights of the MIUI series ROMs?
In other words...what's the big deal about them (Again, I don't mean to sound like a jerk when I say that, I'm looking for knowledge and info...)
It looks to me like an iOS kinda clone/software the two times I tried it on my phone. Is there no app drawer, etc?
Those are the kinda things I"m interested in...objective thoughts.
I didn't feel this tread belonged in dev section by any means...
Thanks!!
MIUI is like Sense/Blur. It's a complete UI overhaul of the entire Android operating system. Although there is no app drawer, you can simply switch to your favorite launcher (ADW ex, Launcher 7, GoLauncher, etc.) Outside of that, MIUI is fast. Very fast. There are lots of themes out there for it (excited for Vicious to get the ICS MIUI working.)
Yea no app drawer like iphone but you can use folders to organize things. Its like iOS on steroids it merges the best of Android and the best of iOS. I ran MIUI for a good couple weeks and switched back to sense only because of the MMS not working. (I have 3 kids and a baby on the way so me and my wife send photos to each other alot.)
But when I did run MIUI it was fantastic very fast and smooth looked good settings was all there right in front of you. You can't really go wrong its based off AOSP so think of Cyanogen or Vanilla Android so there is no sense widgets or anything just have to find stuff you want from the market.
IF you can buy bootmanager (i think it scalled) and run more than one rom and test htem back and forth. Its great ill go back once MMS is fixed for now Sense is really good im on Chingy's Gingeritis 3D atm
I played around with it for about 30 minutes today...it is fast.
That being said, I'll wait till MMS is available as well.
Thanks for the input...much appreciated!!!
Sure no Problem its a fantastic rom. Vicious is making the ICS version that should be out sometime today I'll probally flash it and run it for a week and be sad at no mms and go back to Gingeritis lol
Oh and superb battery life as well. My extended battery just got twice of it's juice after switching to MIUI.

MMS has worked just fine for me on MIUI using Go SMS. I use the stock SMS app since its themed with whichever you theme you choose for the rom, but use Go to send/receive MMS.
Battery life on MIUI has been the best I've experienced by far. I've tried just about every rom (Sense & Aosp) for the bolt, minus maybe 2 or 3 of them. Even if I chose not to use one for a daily driver, I always at least try the newest latest and greatest thing. I've been off the charger for roughly 15 hours and I'm sitting at 81% battery right now, using the stock battery.
I'd been hooked on BAMF Bliss and Synergy Eternity which are both Sense 3.5, and when I tried MIUI when Vicious released it I had only planned on playing with it, then going back to one of the 3.5 roms... obvious to say, that didn't happen. The battery life, speed, smoothness, and ability to customize won me over.

How do you get go to work with mms??
My name is Revos I'm a recovering flashaholic running Liquid Gingerbread 3.0
GoMMS is only capable sending pics and audio. it will not recieve. also the recipient of the mms only recieves a url.
Not necessarily true. I've been sending and receiving MMS with Go SMS pro for days, as has my wife on her Evo running miui.
Also, search xda for "alt app drawer " app if you want an app drawer. Its a free apk. You'll still have to place your. Apps in one folder, or make several for categories. I personally like having an app drawer on my dock.

If you had to pick the top 3 things that are better in MIUI than AOSP what would they be?
MIUI is so fast its crazy, I love all the built in customization as well. Beyond that there is unlimited support out there for themes and what not, and being cross platform it is very easy to go out and find information. There are very cool features baked in ( pressing home from the lock screen and holding it turns on camera leds for a flashlight for instance ) I swear when I first started messing with miui on my INC and DX I was ALWAYS finding new features. It makes D1's feel like current devices its so fast.
As far as an app drawer, I have bounced between placing all my apps in one folder and putting that in my dock, to organizing them on my home screens, to bundling them all into separate folders. Right now My home screen to the left of my main screen is filled with 12 folders,
Chat;
Google talk/voice group me
File Mgmt;
File Explorer ( miui's awesome file manager ) downloads drop box and docs to go
Bench Marks;
Speed Test and quadrant standard
Widgets;
BW, swype installer, swiftkey x, pure grid calender, multi icon, hackers keyboard, circle battery, and voice search short cuts
then notes, social, gadgets ( bar code scanner and such ) trivia apps, news, root tools, tools, and media.
I could get by with less, but I needed an even number for appearance reasons lol.
Then I have a folder in the middle of my dock with my most use applications, gmail, email, market, facebook, ebay, paypal, ect...
Never going back to another rom now that its stable, just have people email me pictures. MMS will come soon enough
I'm guessing this has the same problems of aosp builds?
1. No nfl network
2. Wonky GPS?
Yes, on nfl mobile. But on gps it works pretty good for me. Navigation and what not. Just a problem with weather widget. Which some times give wrong location but can be fixed easily by setting location manually

I have not personally flashed this ROM on my phone (likely will now that it is fully ported), but the excellent battery life is one of the highlights of this ROM, based on what I have heard from my friends who run it on their phones and what I have read on multiple forums. When I flash it, I will report back my results.
14 hours and at about six percent on a rezond battery.... I'm somewhat of a heavy user though, and I do not take any steps to make battery life better, all my email accounts check every 15 mins, screen brightness all the way up ect...

All these positive reviews. I think I'll have to give it a go. Ran it daily on my INC, hadn't on my Thunderbolt as i waited for stability.
It seems like that point was now reached.
Just want to mention that I've been trying to kill my battery, I have left the screen on and have tethered to wirelessly to my ipad, and my phone has only dropped 1 percent in the last half hour

What the best rom for our G2X with good performance and good battery life
How about reading? Have you tried that?
There is no 'best ROM.' That's like asking what's the best car or what's the best food, it all comes down to personal preference.
Really, you can't go wrong with any of them. I've found the best battery life to be with Tsugi 2.3.4 or Weapon G2x. MIUI and CM7 have a little faster drain, but it's not too noticeable, but you get tons of customization in exchange. In my experience with custom kernels, they all perform about the same, which is a good thing, they've all super fast.
Also, what Beekersguy said, this question gets asked literally every day.
Sent from my Tsugi G2x using XDA Premium App
Yeah, there are literally dozens of threads with the same title as yours. They all get answered the same, with the only difference being the addition of Tsugi.
Simple question gets a simple answer. CM7.
Yes, but there is very limited number of roms, most of the roms are about an month and a half old without any updates to them.

Quality over quantity.
I've only used Weapon G2X as of now and I like it a lot to be honest with you.
Everyones replies are true there is no real answer to that question.
Also, which version are you looking for...Froyo or GB
If its Froyo...go for Ultimate ROM,as for a GB rom i wouldn't know because i'm just waiting for ICS to come out and not deal with the constant GB updates but thats me. So for GB roms, other opinions should be taken into account.
The honest answer to this question is:
Whichever Rom works best for you...
That sounds like a cop-out but, follow me on this... The problem with the G2X was lousy support from LG from the beginning. That means that all of the Roms suffered various glitches. Froyo Roms (which I never experienced since I didn't have a G2X back then), Gingerbread Roms, both 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 all have had glitches. Cyanogen has never been 100% either, nor has MIUI...
What that means is, there's not a single Rom that can say "I have it ALL WORKING 100%". Such a best does not exist on the G2X, despite any claims to the contrary.
Even Tsugi has a number of issues. Some are due to my lack of ability, but others come down to buggy LG code. Without source code, we merely try to hack and patch to get things working better.
Cyanogen of course has source code, but has little information regarding internal workings, and unfortunately no dedicated developers working ONLY on the G2X.
So, in the end, you decide WHICH rom offers you the best features with glitches you can live with.
In general:
LG 2.3.3 Roms: Seem to have more Screens of Death & Random Reboots, but some people have bluetooth issues.
LG 2.3.4 Roms: Seem to have a little better battery life and stability overall, but there seem to be some USB issues for a few users, and some have bluetooth issues.
CM7 Roms: Battery life isn't as good, GPS isn't quite as reliable (not that it's 100% on LG roms either)
MIUI Roms: All the issues of Cyanogen + most people cannot get Wifi Calling to work.

As one of those users with USB issues I presume you are referring to, I just wanted to clarify -- it's really an issue with unmounting the SD card (which happens when you set it up for USB access), not limited to USB access. Just going into Settings and unmounting the card directly usually reboots the phone, just like attempting to set it up for USB access.
I have tried CM7 and MIUI 1.18 and both are having problem with black screen and rebooting....
I'm using Tsugi Rom and so far I love it. I do however prefer the other camera, BUT its better to have this camera working than none at all
Great phone I think.
Im on MIUI and have camera problem too. Like it takes a few times to open up the camera or its just black screen...

It does mostly depend on what you want in a rom. Cm7 is the most popular and known for its theming capability. Miui is known for looking a lot like ios. Most of the others are based off stock.
I personally use Whitehawkz's weapon g2x rom, since it comes with a stock launcher and a touchwiz launcher that is quite nice.
Though it IS up to you.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
I like weapon, though I can't say I've tried a whole bunch to compare.
I've used CyanogenMod since CM4 and CM7 was the first ROM I loaded on my G2x. A while back I loaded Weapon as a change of pace and haven't looked back.
Weapon G2x works fine so far
I've been using weapon 3.0 R1 for a few weeks now and it has yet to do the random freeze or reboot the stock ROM does sometimes. I haven't had to pull the battery out once! Sometimes the stock ROM would freeze so bad I'd have to pull the battery. Anyone else's G2x do this with the stock ROM?
I'm also getting pretty good battery life from weapon even with Wifi, bluetooth, and GPS on all day long.
It says I've been on the battery for 9h 15m 34s and it's at 69% right now.
Battery use says
Cell standby 24%
Wifi 24%
Bluetooth 24%
Phone idle 22%
I do use the TMobile Wifi calling feature because my tower coverage at my house is poor. And since I work at home and I'm here all day I just leave the Wifi calling on and just use that for (not always)perfect calls.
Ive tried a bunch of roms. For me right now its Bionix 1.2.1. A 2.3.3 rom. Kinda reminds me of my old vibe in a way. Anywayz this rom is boss for me. Semi transparent parts a few themes, options for downloads, its fast on wifi 2 3 4g. Smooth no hiccups or lags no reboots or freezing
Transitions r fast n ram management hasn't Been a problem for me. Did I mention its TEAM WHISKEY?!
