thunderbolt vs xperia play - Thunderbolt General

soo i have a xperia play and so far i dont rly like it i got it rooted with 2.3.3 and well i thought i would play more games on it but it seems i use it for more internet then anything else
hows the thunderbolt? any good roms? 4g problems? Des moines Ia is about to get 4g on the 17th and well this would be the perfect time to switch phones to a 4g one.
right now i have the unlimited data plan (got it before they switch to the whole pay for 2 gigs worth thing) if switch my play to the thunder bolt will my unlimited data transfer over to the 4G unlimited? or will they Cap me and make me pay more? do you have to pay more for 4G
im just gonna trade Phone for phone with this guy on CL said he bought it in Sep of this year so idk if these phones have problems are what

you can get emulators off of market(probably even the same ones that work on the play)... roms though, you'd have to track down yourself. 4g is a hell of alot faster then 3g(but so is the battery drain).
since you have unlimited data, that will carry over. also, I heard there's bluetooth gamepads you can use with the thunderbolt but I never bothered trying to get one.

when i said roms i ment android roms lol and custom roms

There are a lot of amazing roms, such as das bamf , cm7, MIUI, and liquid roms. And those are just a few of the many roms for tbolt

Unfortunately with AOSP roms you will have to spend a week or two trying out different radios to see which ones work well for your phone without giving you data drops.

The first radio I flashes works fine on all those roms I mentioned=)

Suprised at the lack of interest!

Seems devs are not flooding to this phone like they did with the TBolt, I have tbolt for work and Charge for personal right now and I do a fair bit of customization.
I got to say I cannot recommend the tbolt over the charge except if you MUST do voice calling and have data at the same time.
Hoping more Devs hop on board this great little phone!
It was the same when the Epic came out for Sprint. The Evo had the better development out of the two. Not that one is better than the other IMO. I have both the charge and the Thunderbolt as well.
I'm guessing it's because in essence if you already have the bolt why bother with a phone that's almost identical...
I'm hoping for at least a permanent root for WiFi tether after June 15th anything else I'll consider a sexy bonus

People that wanted 4G went with the Thunderbolt, and likely are "stuck" with it now due to contracts. Why spend another $600 to get a similar device. People that don't care about 4G are waiting for dual core phones, or if they are less concerned with 4G, a more up-to-date 4G phone. Plus, it is a Samsung phone which isn't exactly the easiest to work with from a development standpoint.
I got to say I cannot recommend the tbolt over the charge except if you MUST do voice calling and have data at the same time.
Are you saying that you can't do voice and data at the same time on the Charge? I saw a video where it was possible on youtube, but you make it sound like it is not possible.

It's only possible if you are in a 4G area. The Thunderbolt has an SVDO and LTE radio, which allows it to do voice/data with 3G or 4G coverage.

Yeah, only 3g in my area. I'm in 4g areas quite often tho.
Don't worry about it: when imnuts releases his recovery and root/Voodoo/UV/BLN kernel package, you'll have everything you need functionality-wise anyway in one fell swoop. Then you just need a bored themer to port some stuff and make it look shiny...
(No pressure, imnuts. )

thubderbolt best 4g Verizon phone?

ok guys i need ur gelp, i only got a 1/2 hour to decide. i found a great deal on a tb but i dont know if i should get it.
are you guys happy with the phone?
would u get a diff 4g phone
how is the batt?
a list of pros n cons would be great
might buy it for 175 used. i got burn with the fascinate and i dont wanna do the same.
tge reason i want a 4g phone is to lock in unlimited 4g before the limited plans get in.
Best 4g lte phone imo. Just make sure to get an extended battery down the road.
Great speeds
OK screen
Great dev support
Not so great battery life on standard battery

Get the damn TB. Put some BAMF on it. Enjoy.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
I can usually get from 8-16 hours from the thunderbolt on the standard battery, depending on use of course. I am sitting in wifi mostly, running das Bamf 1.8.6 right now. Over the weekend, I got 28 hours on a single charge on 3G, but I didn't use it much at all - just emails, a few websites but there was about an hour of pandora in there.
If you're interested in rooting/ROMing, I think the TB is definitely the best choice
I thought the Samsung phone was pretty good. Ofcourse I am not sure if it is worth the extra money, it probably sells for more than TB.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Not saying this cause I own one, thunderbolt hands down. The development community alone should be enough to make it the most appealing LTE device.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
I was wondering the same thing. Hardware wise the charge is superior but developer wise the thunderbolt has more support. I bought my tbolt used in like new condition for $350. The price jacked up once the tiered data plans were leaked. At $175 check to make sure the esn is clean and then go for it!

No, hahah sorry kinda stressed out abou it for some reason
I am getting it just in case they say u can't be grandfathered in for the 4g. I don't even have 4g here but 4g is the future and I only pay 10 for unlimited ( I got this crazy promotional deal last November) n I don't wanna lose it when I do get 4g around here.
I have to say I'm impressed with the Thunderbolt, and I'm not an Android guy. Well Im totally an Android guy, now. If I had gotten any other phone available currently, I would have passed it off in a week.
The thunderbolt's quality combined with developer support and the online community just form a smartphone-holy trinity.
I have an iPad 2, iPad, iPhone 4, and Thunderbolt. The short battery life the first three days was a con. Then I started customizing my settings, and about 3 hours after ordering an extended battery I realized "Oh ****, I've been pushing this dude pretty hard for 10 hours."
Needless to say, I only use it when I'm going to be out all night and she's pretty enough that I may not charge it first thing in the morning.
Rooted Thunderbolt on BAMF Sense 3.0 RC 4 with MR2 radio and latest dreamKernel.
By the way, I see you're in Queens. I work in Long Island City and get great 4g speeds. About 25 down and 5 up.

you keep unlimited as long as you keep your plan (3g/4g doesn't make a difference), they have said that as long as you are unlimited with smartphone data, you are good (according to engadget). If you change your base plan in any way, then you will lose the unlimited data.
Thunderbolt is a great phone with minor hiccups stock. Charge has better battery life and a better screen. Thunderbolt has a lot better dev support as do most htc products. Thunderbolt comes with 40gb total memory, not sure about the Charge.
Every Charge I've played with has just dragged. I attribute it to the way Samsung distributed the ram. Their battery life sucks too. I can get 2 days out of my TB. I've used a Charge that regularly loses 40% in 3 hours.

I love my thunderbolt. I bought it used for $350 went to verizon to activate told him it was used and he asked if I wanted insurance. I said sure. Had an issue that was within 14 days of purchase and they gave me a new in box. Yeah I know people will ***** I screwed verizon but people have a job and should be trained. Since I have had no problems, love the Roms put out and 4g is great.
I can't believe that nobody had mentioned that the.TB is the only verizon phone with voice and simultaneous data thanks to its dual antennas.

I like my TB, but this is my first Android phone so I can't really compare. People have gone over the pros for the phone, and I agree with them. Here are a couple of potential cons. #1 is the phone sound quality. I personally don't find it that great, and to me Verizon iPhone (my wife has one) sounds better. I thought the phone amp was such a basic part that it should never be an issue, but surprisingly it is an issue for me. #2 is the 4g battery drain bug. The good thing is that not everyone has it, and I hope MR2 radio finally fixes it (testing that right now). Other than that it has been a great phone for me, and I am definitely enjoying the dev support, thanks to the devs and people offering help on this forum!

i did the update att sent me the other day and the first time i tethered after doing it was last night then this morning i get a msg from att to call them. so i did and they informed me they knew i was tethering but could not tell me how they new i was doing it. so now i am thinking about a new rom. i will reroot first and see if it replaced the tethering apk. if anyone has any information on this update please let me know. i was going to copy the msg they sent to me for the update but it conveniently del'd itself on reboot.

People have been getting nailed right and left, seemingly regardless of ROM. I don't think the update has anything to do with it, they're likely doing some packet inspection to determine what OS the packets are originating from.
when i called in regarding the nasty gram. she emphasized to update my phone. so im guess that is where it is coming from. id agree with you.
Yeah, looks like it was the update. It's weird that all of you got caught those,
I tethered a decent amount a few days ago(don't care if anyone knows, even you AT&T spies!) while my home internet was out, not a thing.
Guess we know not to use any new updates from AT&T until we find out how they detect us without tetheringmanager.apk..
.

It's because you're using a stock ROM. I believe there's a service (though I can't for the life of me remember what it's called) that can detect if you're tethering or not. Custom ROMs remove the service so they can't tell.
Im on infused 2.2.3 and I tethered a little bit today and have not gotten anything yet, seems to working fine.

Yeah, I used that much the other week... I've been running CM7 so I'm pretty sure that AT&T is doing some packet sniffing to see the useragent of the packets coming through. I don't think it has to do with the OS you're running.
I got a nastygram saying to stop by September 30th or they'll charge me. So far this month I've use 18gb so I'm sucking as much as I can before they cut me off!!

Whammy!!! Double whammy!! Triple whammy!!! I thought I used net a lot cos I use close to 1.5 GB a month at peak times.. with my avg around 1 GB, and no tethering whatsoever. No wonder AT&T is tracking on tethering users.

Works for me and I just updated using the recent 14MB (I think) file the other day. and tethered for a few hours....so far so good anyway.
My wife who has a Streak just got her nasty gram yesterday, now she does tether ALOT, but her phone does not even show a disclaimer for the mobile hotspot like ours does. So, i dont think it has anything to do with the update.
I dont tether alot but I do tether and most months stay around 8-10gigs. (most of that is actually on my phone, I like Netflix)
She is pissed because out where we live we do not have any high speed internet options but we have AWESOME data speeds with ATT but none of the other carriers have anything close. we thought about getting one of those mifi hotspots but ATT only has a 5gig one and that is just a joke to to think 3 teens and 2 adults are going to make that work.

Lucky bastards... I'm stuck on 2GB, so tethering really isn't a viable replacement option for me.
That being said, I find it absolutely bullsh*t that you have to pay for a certain way to use your data. Why should AT&T give a damn how you use your data? I pay for 2GB, I should be able to use it, however the hell I want.

Agreed. You're robbed on a monthly basis from TMo. My line on a family plan is $60 a month for services that literally cost the company nothing. They could charge a fraction of that price and still make a profit margin > 100%. On top of that, TMo tried to dump a faulty device on their customers knowing full-well it had hardware problems. Don't feel bad; take everything you can from corporations and don't look back. They would (and DO) do the same to you.
I've had my share of bad experience with my G2X. Recently on kang's nightlies, I notice gps locks instantly. I've been very happy with my phone for a long time.
My one issue still remains, and its emails on stock app don't sync after 10 hours. If I can find a fix i'd be happy and giddy.
I am pretty sure the email issue doesn't exist on stock cooked 2.3.3 roms but I'm too accustomed to cm7 and the built in notifications. I refer cm7.
There are black screen of death I get but, I get by. Email just drives me mad.
More support for this phone either from T-Mobile or LG will be great. Can't complain now that I'm running BP n supercharger v6 nothing is wrong. Maybe GPS not locking fast enough but is way better than an iPhone.... can't say that I don't want ics cuz i do.... btw if u do get to beat the system I'd like to know how. Cuz I'm 1 month away from leaving T-Mobile and refuse to get 2 yr contract with them

Since this will be released in Q4, I'll be far out of contract by that point (was lucky enough to get an eighteen-monther) because I had a strong feeling that we would only get a year of support.
Doesn't bug me. The wizards on xda could get it working (look at the Sense 5 progress now) and I will have moved on to a One+ (if they release one)

You get absolutely ****e service, lucky to get two bars of 3G in an area from where I can see the phone mast from my back garden (going closer there's a box that says Everything Everywhere on it). Pathetic.
i think its a fake. they show the HTC Hero on this list which over 3 years old?!

I would expect more from EE, didn't know their signal is that bad, it isn't bad for me on T-Mobile except for some buildings.
Have you tried one of those Home Signal boxes that boost cell reception from WiFi?
I used to have unlimited data on Giffgaff back when I had my Wildfire, but their speeds are really bad, O2 limits them and too many people use the service. Can't wait for unlimited data with 3

The HTC Hero shows that it isn't getting the update, although it's still strange that they put it there in the first place.

its not interesting since we have aosp rom's witg latest 4.2.2 and great developers they do everything possible. our devs had done aosp with 3.4 kernel and sense 5 ports, we dont need htc to release update for us..
just my opinion ..
