I often get a warning from the market that i have not enough space to install an app. When i check the settings for storage and SD i have tons of space on internal, external and system space. why do i get this warning? what partition controls the app space and how can i increase it?
I get that with larger apps. Could it be RAM?
Funnny, seems you don't know what is what on a phone... RAM has nothing to do with downloading an app, it is a cache problem, Aeschylus button is both yalls best friend!

Hello everyone,
I have froyo on N1 Tmo.
I used this trick from adb
adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2
to move and then install all apps to the SD.
Yet, I'm down to 20MB memory and the warning keeps coming up in the notification bar.
I've gone thru the application remover and verified that almost every app is on the SD card, there are a few like google maps, that won't move.
Is there a way I can figure out what is using this internal memory? I've cleaned out my SMS and call logs, but I'm not sure how else to address this.
I just can't believe that the nexus one is having memory issues WTF!
cheers
To see which files fill up the most space on internal memory:
settings>applications>manage applications>press menu>sort by size
Hope it helps
Thanks. I was looking there but I think there is a disconnect in Android on that.
It seems that sorting them is by the app size, and since my apps all almost ALL installed on the SD card, my free RAM should be huge, yet it's not.
Looking closer, it looks like the "Data" field is where all the memory is being used up. It seems that all Data is stored internally.
For example Twonkymedia server is 3.67MB application size, but the data field is 65MB!!! When I cleared the data, I recovered 65MB of internal memory.
If there was away to make apps store their data on the SD...
Well I'm on a G1 Supercsdiv4 and it has this app that u can see what apps are open and which ones are using up ur memory, I think the app is on theunlockr.com

So, I now have the internal memory getting low icon in my notifications bar. The system says I have 51megs free. Anyway to get rid of this icon? Other than uninstalling apps or moving them to SD. That doesn't seen low enough to trigger the warning.
Clean the cache?

Many people are having that issue including me...i can't install even a small app once I get down to 50mb. You can use app to 2sd or a program like it to move any apps that can move to the external sd card.

Yeah, looks like the low storage alert goes off somewhere close to 50megs. I moved some apps to the SD card to free up space. It is just annoying you can't dismiss the alert. It is like rubbing salt in an open wound. Bad enough the phone has painfully low onboard memory but now I have to look at an alert telling me just how low it is!
Hi guys i was wondering if anyone knows a way for.us to get more internal memory i know theres the fota file thing. But is it posible in any way that we can buy or change the internal memory of this phone and put another one bigger?

Nope.avi
Internal memory is what it is.
Ok, it sucks having this phone with such small memory. I had a vibrant before and when you are used to have phone with big internal memory like i did it sucks big time. I hate every time that im dowloading an app abd give me the error of not having memory available
rught now im just with the default apps and the xda app, ninja jump and another game for my kids. Nothing more :/
Before wiping my phone last week i had 90+ market apps installed. I never got any errors regarding internal storage space. I remember using the fota fix app though.

Something doesn't sound right. I've got over 60 apps installed from the market with no memory issues. Check your internal memory to see if its full.

You'll have to root and apply the fota fix by Matt Henry http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13504566. Do this and you'll have all the space you need

Also you can use an app like app2sd or one like it so put apps onto the so card. I use this for games because they take up the most storage space. I use link2sd and use ext4.

Are you running a GB Rom? I had issues with link2sd and ext4 with apps disappearing back when the first GB leaks came out and we had all the busybox ext4 conversion problems. Since then I have kept away from it, but would love to use it again if it is running smoothly with the newer leaks / roms.

Have u tried App2SD app?... it will automatically change the location for the new installed apps to the SD card instead of the internal memory.
Ofc some apps just need to stay in the internal memory but, just to mention, i have 114 apps installed, 91 in the SD the rest in the internal memory (including the stock apps)

I am on octane with link2sd with no problems, there is a setting that you turn off so all of your apps don't go to sd. This way you can choose
Hi,
Just out of curiosity ... there are some apps that can be placed in System/app and some that can go in Data/app. I was wondering if I place apps in Data/app, will that take more out of my personal space and thereby leave less space for me to install other apps or will they all go into the space reserved for ROMS?
It may sound confusing, but am sure someone will understand what I mean.
Thanks for any input
It's all inside the internal memory, therefore it does not influence available space. I hope I interpret it correctly lol

Thanks my friend I was thinking the same, but just wanted to be sure!
No problem. You only have two different storages in your phone: internal and external. External is dubbed the sdcard, so anything that is not on there is in the internal.

Ah! ok! Now that logic certainly makes sense
Thanks again.
system/apps are preinstalled with rom. Read-only unless you have root. Deleting system app does not free up space for user apps in data/apps, but could free up ram from not running it in background. Titanium Backup can "freeze" system apps for same effect.
Deleting system app and then reinstalling from play store only takes up data/apps space, which has a predefined size of ~1.05GB. System rom size is ~528MB. Balance of the 16GB flash (~14.2GB) are for non-app storage (virtual sdcard).

Hi!
This is related to a Galaxy Ace 2 phone, but I posted by mistake on the general forum.
It seems I can't install/update large-ish apps using Google Play and I get an error related to insufficient storage.
The problem is that I have around 170MB available internally, plus 500MB on each SD card (internal and external) and the error shows up when trying to update Swype, Google+, Google Search, etc. (all around 15-20MB).
If I uninstall some apps/games (e.g. Angry Birds, Cut the Rope) the free space goes up a bit (not much, as I keep these on the SD card) and now I'm again able to update those apps initially mentioned.
It seems just like my Ace 2 is trying to keep around 150-170MB as some sort of reserved space.
Is this normal? Should I worry that I may have a faulty phone/NAND?
I'm using the MF1 BTU ROM, stock, but I'm coming from the MB4 version in order to get the full 624MB RAM.
Thanks!
Reserved space could be system files. Overwriting those could potentially brick your system.

Yes, pretty sure. I checked it via the Storage menu in System Settings and also via Titanium Backup.
Also, I'm not using any kind of script or app like Link2SD which mounts an EXT2/3/4 partition as /data. I think this excludes the possibility that free space is being incorrectly reported (but I'm not really sure).

Hi,
This is a very commun issue with Android, it seems that the algorithm calculating free memory isn't that efficient. The best solution is to keep more than 250MB on internal memory. And if it happens, to remove one or two apps

Why not try to install these apps on sdcard ? It may solve your internal memory problem.

That would indeed minimize the impact of the problem. However, not all apps support being moved to the external sdcard and some become a bit limited. In addition to that, even apps moved to the sdcard continue to use the dalvik cache on internal storage.
I have the same problem but i do clear the catch each time
