Is there a way to install the USB drivers and ODIN in Ubuntu Linux?
It's so hard to find clear documentation for a regular guy.
Thanks

You can either use Heimdall in place of Odin, or you can find a Windows machine and use it. Heimdall is much less straighforward than Odin. I know some people have gotten it to work, but most people just find a Windows machine.
its possible to run it in a vm box but I wouldn't use odin in anything but real windows just because you won't brick it if something goes wrong.. heimdall is also an option though I've never used it

I've heard that Heimdall isn't compatible with the Charge. What I wound up doing was installed VirtualBox and XP, and used Odin from there. Worked like a charm.
I'd much prefer a native solution, though.

I tried using Odin in XP on a virtual machine with USB support and out froze in mid flash. While the device was recognized as a COM port of the beginning of the flash at one point it did not recognize anything on the COM port and froze at that point.
I'm not saying it won't work only that it didn't work on that one case which is the only time i tried it. And this was back on my Fascinate.

You should be able to flash the kernel via Heimdall in Linux to achieve root access.

Hello I see lots of people having problems with odin. So I would like to introduce Heimdall. It's not new but seems to be forgotten. Heimdall is more manual then odin. With heimdall you have to unzip the odin file and put them into the proper spots. They are labeled with the files extensions that should go there. It comes with the drivers heimdall use which is different then odin drivers. Please use heimdall it should work better then odin. Here is the website that will also help http://www.glassechidna.com.au/products/heimdall/ video added too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TgyaUbjcm4&feature=youtube_gdata_player

i gotta say i only use heimdall now, after having various issues with odin (mostly of my own doing)
but really heimdall is a superior tool as you can selectively flash different parts of a tarball and see actually what you are flashing
and if you want to change your boot image (not the boot ani, but what is currently "samsung") you have to flash hacked paramfs which you need heimdall for too
I have not been able to get Heimdall to work yet. I did d/l the file and opened it on my MAC running Snow Leopard but when I tried to run it fails to open and it says its an incomplete install, removed, reinistalled and same issue. I d/l the latest version 1.1.1 from the site you posted, I will try again tonight.

Nope, doesn't work on my MacBook Pro, command line or front-end, with the Charge. I've used older versions of heimdall on my i9000 and my friend's Vibrant without issues.
With the Charge I get "Failed to detect compatible device".
Installed suite, reinstalled suite, rebooted MacBook Pro.
Searching now, but any suggestions appreciated.

Yeah, never been a problem before. Guess I better check it against my old i9000.
I installed the 1.1.1 OSX Suite, which supposedly installs the codeless kext (drivers) per heimdall's home page. Reinstalled it twice. Rebooted twice. Still no go.
Running out of time to screw around with it before work, guess I'll have to play later today.
thank you for the info and the how to video. I will try it tonight. I also have Win7 on my Mac so I can always go that route if necessary. The issue I am having is Heimdall won't actually run at all, it appears to be installing incorrectly or not fully.

Gonna have to find a frickin' windows box to use Odin. Ugh.
Hello Droid Charge users,
I've just released a new Heimdall command line binary (version 1.2.0). I haven't mentioned it really because it's untested, however I've added some functionality to Heimdall that should get your devices recognised. That in conjunction with the new PIT file functionality should mean you're good to go.
As usual the binaries can be download from the official Heimdall page.
Let me know how you go.
Thank you for the release

Downloaded, installed, rebooted. The command line still won't work for me either with the Charge. I get a "Claiming interface... Failed!" message.

I appreciate your help, but I feel like we're going in circles.
There are no "drivers" for OS X on the official Web site, unless you mean the kext that is included in the install of the various heimdall versions.
I've already tried version 1.1.1 and 1.2.0 on two different Macs now, and neither one will work with either the front-end (which is what the trick you posted addresses) or the command line. Both Macs can communicate with an i9000 with Heimdall.
So please, which version is working for you? Perhaps something older than 1.1.1?
I may have a screwy Charge, I can't even get Odin on my friend's XP laptop to recognize the Charge (and yes, I am in Download Mode with the yellow android shoveling).
I've literally spent 5 hours on three different computers screwing around with this today. I have never been this unsuccessful or frustrated with an Android phone on Macs, and I'm not noob to Odin or Samsung, I've had i9000 and Vibrant working on all these machines with Odin and heimdall.
i do mean kext. im on 1.1.1. I use the term drivers as i have a laptop on ubuntu a computer with windows and finally a mac pro

probably a driver issuue for odin, you can bang your head over that or find a friend with a mac or linux box and use heimdall. mac osx and linux dont use drivers for most usb devices thus eliminating that hassel of device recognition.
what windows version? are you running as admin? what drivers did you install? how? did odin work before? which usb port on the pc?

ok running odin in a vm can be as issue to set up. you might need to manually install the drivers.
http://www.glassechidna.com.au/products/heimdall/
this is heimdall, it is an open source alternative to odin and has a mac version. if it is like the linux version you need to launch it from terminal. dont repartition unless you have to, heimdall wants bootloaders for repartition and that is an unnecessary risk. dont use the pit, just extract the pda.tar.md5 and the phone.tar.md5 files from one of the odin packages and flash the cache.rfs dbdata.rfs factoryfs.rfs zimage and modem.bin
disable voodoo first! (requires reboot, takes a while)
oh, is kies running in the system tray? that might prevent odin from seeing the phone.
heimdall is probably better for mac users anyway but closeing kies might be all you need to do.
Should I uninstall kies altogether?

no because it will likely uninstall the drivers with it. you should be able to find kies in the system tray(might depend on the version of kies, im not sure about kies mini) and just right click and close if that is the issue. im not saying it is, it might be something else.

I'm getting an error trying to run this application. Seems like it too requires some behind the scenes work.
And I tried killing Kies with Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) but still no dice with Odin. I JUST used it Saturday to upgrade Infused...I just don't get why it doesn't work now.
Just as a tease...I suppose, I put my phone into Kies mode and lo and behold Odin noticed the phone. Of course, I can't flash in that mode.
I think my phone is doomed. Thank goodness it works at least for all other functions but...what in the world is going on?

im not sure if it is needed. but alot of programs ask for it, something makes me think odin or the drivers use it. i may be getting confussed with something else though, also kies may install it.
Windows is finally detecting my phone! Sorta....
I installed that microsoft software as well as Kies. Windows is now saying "Unknown Device has been connected".
And it says the device has malfunctioned and Windows has shut it down.
It seems everyone with the broken red cwm issue fixed it. But I'm trapped still...
And yes, I'm posting from my Infuse still.

As far as I can tell heimdall does not yet support the s3 and the website seems pretty dead.
I had to borrow my stepson pc to load a rooted stock rom via ODIN. Once you have that you can use dd to load a custom recovery, plus mobile ODIN is now available.

wow, that stinks. is there a way to fix that?
I use a macbook and had issues with rooting using heimdall. I think your best and easiest option is to borrow a friend's computer with windows and just root with that - since you'll be doing most things from recovery you most likely wont need access to windows again.
if i unroot, will i need a windows computer?
Has anybody been successful? The previous way using one click only works on 2.3.5. Using heimdall is unsuccessful. Im unable to flash cwm recovery using rom manager. All I have is my imac and I'd rather not have to install Odin and files and somebody else's PC. Any help?
I own both a pc and mac but I rooted mine on 2.3.5 using zerg rush and its rooted ever since. I can't be that helpful but you could always use parallels or VMfusion or even bootcamp to install windows on your mac just for the root.
It's not our model but you can check this as a guideline http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sU-fm6FOyKo
AFAIK, you have to flash CWM and use it to flash Superuser to root any version of Android higher than 2.3.5, but to do that you need Odin, which only works on Windows.
If Heimdall worked with SR we could use that to flash CWM but it doesn't. I had the same problem on Linux. Good luck!

My buddy recently rooted his phone using VMware Workstation 8. If you're going to go that route, just make sure you attach the USB device to the VM, and disconnect it properly before shutting down the system. Overall it was a fairly painless process. And if memory serves me correctly Workstation has a free 30 day trial.
Solution: rid the mac.

The only way I know that this may be possible is an Odin alternative called Heimdall, and I've never heard verification that anyone got Heimdall to work with this phone. I really couldn't help beyond that. Heimdall is more complex than Odin and I never used it, and I no longer have my Charge so I can't mess with it now either.
You could use boot camp.

Yeah it's Heimdall, Im pretty computer savvy, but that thing is confusing, there are some videos floating around that I saw. I think basically you can only flash Stock images (i.e. the Factory Reset things, ROM wise). You can flash kernels and recoveries though.
I'd recommend using someones PC for and hour or get on a torrent site and acquire Windows and an emulator.

Your mac should be fine because the sd card is formatted as FAT32 like a flash drive. You only need Windows for ODIN, which you will need if you want to return to stock. You know how to use boot camp right?
You can also use Parallels which doesn't require you to partition your HD.

Does that work with ODIN though? And I think you have to pay for that.

Parallels should work as I've used it for stock-flashing my Motorola Defy and have only flashed CWM via ODIN on Parallels without a hitch. (Now I need to find a root mod...)
Parallels cost money but also requires the user to supply the OS, in this case Windows. So it's really an annoying process, the best bet is to simply use a friend's Windows PC. I went through a ton of trouble trying to do it Mac-only for my Defy phone but it turned out to be a lengthy process that could have been solved by those one-click root apps for WIndows. Once she's flashed and you can use Clockwork Recovery (assuming it's similar to my Defy) you won't need ODIN except on rare occurrences which means: You visit your friend or you keep a virtual machine or a bootcamp partition available on your Mac.
