for some reason, my tmobile nexus s phone will randomly get real hot for an hours. i won't really be using it and although it's cm7 modded it's not overclocked. i used logging tester and i don't see anything running. any suggestions why this is? i'm scared in time this will shorten the life.
Try changing the kernel
Mines would do the same thing until I started playing with kernels..

Hey guys, my Nexus started having these weird moments where the screen would freeze and turn a weird sickly green color. I also just experienced a couple of random reboots. This happened on CM7 and OpenSoju...
Is this a hardware issue or did something go wrong with my software? Should I return to stock and start over with rooting and whatnot?
Please help
P.S. I'm still within in my 30 days from Best Buy

First, I should emphasize that my Nexus S is the garden-variety i9020T as used on T-Mobile, so it's not the same as yous. I never tried OpenSoju but I did try CM7 several times, both the stable 7.0x releases and the nightlies, and had very little luck with it, with symptoms similar to yours. The worst thing that happened a few times was finding that the phone apparently rebooted in the middle of the night and got stuck in the dreaded boot loop - a dim frozen Cyanogen boot logo showing on the screen and feeling hot to the touch.
I'm now on Jonathon Grigg's Infin1ty ROM and it's been very stable for me. I see that it's not one of the available ROMs for your 4g http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1071500 but there are some deodexed stock ROMs you can try. See if they get you stable, and then you can try some of the more bleeding-edge ROMs later. The 4G is a very new phone so there isn't too much available for it yet.
Yeah is probably the roms I haven't rooted my nexus s 4Gbut I got stock and I don't have any problems at all

I bet you are running out of ram. Been running cm7 on mine since the first build for it and it is smooth as butter.

Thanks for the replies, everyone.
Responding to the quoted one in particular, I don't know how I'd run out of RAM really, I'm only using the same number of apps as I did on my EVO and I didn't have problems with RAM ever. Is it just because of the ROM?
As for using rooted stock ROMs, I would but I -really- love Facebook sync to the point that I almost don't wanna go without it.
i had this issue once too with the nightlies cm7. its software related i guess.
Seems better now. Using nightly 5

My first issue with my G2x is that when I put my phone in my pocket somtimes and I ull it out to chck for any new text or anything. It has poweed off on its own and I have to power it back on. This usually happens like 3 or 4 times a day.
Second issue is that anytime I make or receive a phone call my phone automatically has the speakerphone on. This happen been happening since day one, rather it is rooted or not.
Third is not actually with the G2x, its more to do with Tmobile.. I have had three replacement phones since I bought my G2x and I asked Tmo CC if I could get a different phone since I have had so many problems with the G2x and have had three replacements within the last two months. And they told me the only other phone I could get was the Sidekick 4G... WTF!!!!!!!! If I wanted to downgrade I would just use my G2 or G1.
Has anyone else had either of these issues, if so how can I fix it? Cuz I refuse to get the Sidekick 4G and dont want to keep having to get relacement.
With TMO it seems like you must get a little lucky. It all depends on the representative you get. I have had better success with being nice and speaking with the next in command. TMO has far surpassed my expectations many times.
What os are you running? Stock? Is it rooted? Have you tried cm7?
I was lucky and got a phone with little to no issues. I do know some folks that had the black screen of death ran cm7 and it went away.

My current G2x is rooted running Weapons 3.0 with the ICS Theme and Droid Bionic Boot Animation. But the others were stock with the Clockmod Recovery flashed to them.
I still get the problems in stock too.I ran MIUI for a while, it didn't have those problems. I installed weapon to get wifi calling. I think CM7 based roms don't suffer from the issues.

I use to have the MyTouch 4g and I had to have it replace 3 times with in a 2 month period. T-Mobile allowed me to replace it with the G2X. So I would contact T-Mobile again and talk to a supervisor. It's better to talk with them and they can help you get a better phone. All they have to do is see how many times you replace the phone. They can look it up and then help you get a new better phone. If they don't threaten to go somewhere else, i'll bet they will help then.

Lol, yea well Im going to have to do that cuz it is getting very annoying to have to turn off the speaker everytime I make or receive a call. And the random powering off is even more annoying.

For the random powering off, have you tried different roms. I'm currently using the Bionix Reloaded rom with the dragon kernel specifically for this rom. I haven't had any real issues. My phone has rebooted twice first week but it was a data issue. Mr. Apocalypse is currently working on the issue and will have a new release out soon. I haven't had any more issues after the first week. Ive had the rom for about 3 weeks.
Also, I did noticed when I used SetCpu and overclocked my phone it heated up really quickly so I had to set it back to it regular clock speeds.
Select "stay awake" in your settings/applications/development. That should help with your screen not turning on when it sleeps also know as (SOD) screen of death. Download the free app "Stay Awake" from the market and you will never have a random reboot again. Its bad on battery life but its much better then missing calls, texts,or alarm clocks.

And its not the ROM your using its the hardware LG built the phone with. I have a LG smart TV that reboots after prolonged use too. I've tried every 3rd party ROM out there and still had random reboots. The best fix I found is my prior post and I run weapon 3.0 with faux kernel.

Correction ... the app is called "always awake" my bad.

My g2x got a lot of shutdowns on weapon only got one using Tsugi and the custom kernel
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
go for latest eagles blood (his own version not the kang) with latest Trinity elp kernel. Not had one reset, shut down, or hardly any problem at all. I only use roms where I have zero issues, not sure why anyone would do any different.
Honestly with your problems though (as long as your wiping everything when you flash) seem like an actual problem with the phone for sure.

use Tsugi
and flash the p990 cam do not do not do not use and other kernel

Hello!
My nexus s i getting very warm sometimes, im on kang milestone (stock kernel) is this normal?
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
yes, we all get hot and battery drops faster when this happens.
i think its the cpu governor and clockspeed.
if you put alot of apps on its prossess then it wil work faster, faster = frition. friction=hot. hot= battery drain at a faster rate. dead batt= xda question theads more threads= cramped order. cramped order= more cliick and seeing more ads. all us seeing more ads= more money for xda. xda=thrives off newbies
welcome. we are xda.
But is that normal? Can you recommend any rom that doesn't do that?

Ignore him
It's likely to heat up your phone when playing 3D games, using GPS an the like. Depends on what you are doing with the phone. Also, if you use OC it might get hotter than usual. If you think it's heating beyond any limits, try going back to stock for a couple of days, then if it does the same thing, consider hardware issues.
Is the screen getting warm even with minimal use? I had similar issues with cm7 once when I forgot to do my wipes.
Same with mine mate, few minutes on 3g with full brightness and u can start frying eggs on display screen.
I've found out that it's not happening when my brightness is adjusted at about 50%.
Just wondering how many of u, have set up their phones in auto-brightness mode, cuz i don't see to many post on this forum, regarding overheating issue with nexus s ...

I keep mine in auto-brightness, haven't had this problem.
That's strange, I'm running AOSP+ and Eugene's kernel, not overlocked or anything.
I found with some of these ROM using auto brightness just made it dim and go bright crazy. Either way. I found as bad as it sounds a fresh install the best thing. Titanium backup, sms restore, and then wipe everything clean. Solved all the hassles
Mine has gotten warm with heavy use since I got the phone.
If your running voodoo and have your gamma sliders boosted to hell and back, this also will make the phone run *quite* warm.
So I managed to fix my SOD while the phone was charging, by allowing it to stay awake. However, I still sometimes get SODs by leaving the phone in an idle state after a long while. How do I fix it in this scenerio?
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
I don't think there's a permanent solution for the SOD on the g2x. My phone used to black out when I ran an overclocked kernel. I would recommend that you test out different roms and kernels.
Hey guys,
My beloved nexus s 4g appears to be on It's last leg. After running cm9 stable for weeks without flashing any new roms or kernels it started freezing and locking up randomly. Eventually it started freezing midboot and doing nothing. Sometimes it hung on the splash screen and wouldn't boot. Sometimes it randomly rebooted into recovery out of no where.I tried wiping everything and starting clean, same issue. Most often, it will freeze after being asleep for a while and lock up when I press the power button
I tried running stock, same issues.
I tried relocking and unrooting, same issues.
I tried raising the voltages of clock speeds, same issue.
I have noticed if it's plugged in to a charger, it works perfectly. Any chance It's just a bad battery or something else?
Thanks for any advice guys and gals

Very strange...
RU insured? If so then swap it.
Have u tried to run a logcat to see if it shows anything after reboots?
I think batteries are like $10 bucks or so... or just go to phone store and tell them ur issue and use one if their batteries... but of course you'll need to be back to stock in case they check it
Good luck

It could be the battery not giving you appropriate voltage. I'd buy a replacement. At worst you're out of 10$, at best you Nexus S works.
Not insured. Upgraded to evo 3d, but I miss the nexus. I love the pure Google and form factor of the ns. Gonna try buying a new battery. Thanks gang

Got a new battery. Still has issues booting but seems to be a little more stable. Still not sure its usable as a daily phone :/
Thanks for the suggestions though
