Hello All,
I have looked on every forum I can think of for the past two days and can not find an answer to my problem anywhere... so if i am double posting i am very sry please point me in the right direction...
I successfully rooted my gf's optimus t yesterday using Z4root (extremely easy!!) My problem occurs when i try to flash the recovery thunderg.... I have tried many many times using a Terminal Emulator from the market and then (after much headache) I taught myself how to use adb shell. With both applications and after all my attempts I get the error message: cannot create /system/bin/flash_image: read-only file system. I have followed all the steps as carefully as I can from: All In One Recovery from Android Forums.
Here is the code I followed:
$ su
# mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 (your device /system path) /system
# cat /sdcard/flash_image > /system/bin/flash_image
# chmod 755 /system/bin/flash_image
# mv /system/etc/install-recovery.sh /system/etc/install-recovery.sh.bak
# flash_image recovery /sdcard/(your device recovery.img name)
# sync
I get the error after I enter: # cat /sdcard/flash_image > /system/bin/flash_image
Any help would be much appreciated thanks!

Why not just use ROM Manager to flash recovery?

I have used ROM Manager in the past to flash but I thought I remembered reading somewhere that the LG p509 was having issues with clockworkmod??
btw thanks for the quick reply!
I've used rom manager twice to flash recovery for optimus t ...never any problems...

rom manager can randomly cause problems, so id stick with this first.
what is the error that you get? check the following:
is the file "flash_image" located in the root of your sdcard? and make sure that the name of the file is "flash_image." if that is not the name of the file, replace "flash_image" in the command with whatever the file name is
You're receiving that error because you didn't copy flash_image to your sdcard.
Download it here
I went ahead and used Rom Manager (figured what the hell) and it worked great! Thanks to everyone for your help!
Now that I have flashed Mik's CM7 I tried flashing francos 19.4 kernel to overclock. Everytime I would set the over clock over 748 the phone would freeze, a white screen would appear, and the phone would reboot.... any suggestions??

That's classic kernel panic. Lower your overclock and try again. Keep lowering until it's stable.
That what I read but I was hoping there was another option... I was looking forward to pushing this little beast a little haha
Go to 729,710...729 is recommended but some users claim to get as high as 806, I've never used higher that 787, what your experiencing is called a KP (kernel panic)...try changing your governor around than OC at higher than 710 and see what your phone is doing...or try to start over from scratch...wipe it all than reflash rom than OC....just a heads up I run 480/729-767 on interactivex (governor) and noop for I/O scheduler..follow my configuration and see what it does for you

It's luck of the draw. Some can do 768 or better while others struggle at 729.
For example, mine is stable at 748 but panics at 768.
Trust me, your phone is a whole lot better now than when you bought it
Oh no question about it!! Its running sooo much smoother. The Optimus is actually my gf's phone. I put CM7 on it because I running it on my HTC Sensation and its awesome!
You can only push this device so far before you fry it, settle for adequate performance and stellar battery life....I'm not even sure why there's an option for us to OC past 787, our phones don't have a snapdragon processor....some roms can handle OC at higher voltages and some can't, most I got out of cm7 is 787 but its not stable enough for me

Thanks man Ill take your word for it! Any other suggestions/concerns with the phone?? I just flashed the rom yesterday so i dont know what to expect (as far as bugs and such) are there any nightlies yet?
Well if you have a computer, learn how to code source and you can cook roms for everyone else to enjoy....there is alot more to android development other than the basics...ie...root than custom recovery and custom roms....speaking of kernel panics, I just had one at 748 on popdogs oxygen port, cm7 I can easily run 767...btw are you using no frills or setcpu

Actually, CPU's rarely fail due to OC'ing. Instability forces you to lower the clock. The phone's metal casing and battery acts as a heatsink.
Batteries on the other hand are extremely susceptible to damage due to excessive heat. This is what you need to watch.
Is the stuff hard to learn? I'm not bad with a computer but to be honest it took me like two hrs to figure out how to adb shell haha... i believe im using setcpu with the interactiveX governor but i dont have the phone right in front of me so im not sure..

Read the sticky in the Dev section. Links to all the tutorials are there. Read them and see if it's beyond your skill set.
Didnt know that either thanks! Ill definitely keep that in mind for my Sensation shes tends to get a little warm. I have it OC at 1.56 which isnt that high but it still gets warm.

in your build.prop replace the current text with this: you can get things like tv.com back
Code:
ro.build.description=passion-user 2.2.1 FRG83 60505 release-keys
ro.build.fingerprint=google/passion/passion/mahimahi:2.2.1/FRG83/60505:user/release-keys
i would upload one for people to flash but as some many people are on diff roms/kernels it would just cause more issues then its worth best way to go about fixing it is pulling the file from your phone (or the zip from teh rom your on). swapping out the text and pushing it back to /system

Here's what I did from my PC with adb. (I have adb in my PATH so adjust the commands for wherever you might have adb.exe)
adb pull /system/build.prop
Then I edited the 2 lines on my PC with notepad++ and saved. Then I put it on my sdcard, remounted /system readwrite and copied it over to /system/build.prop and then rebooted.
adb push build.prop /sdcard/build.prop
adb shell
su (if your ROM didn't already drop you in to root, and check your phone for the superuser popup)
mount -t rfs -o remount,rw /dev/block/stl9 /system
cat /sdcard/build.prop > /system/build.prop

This didn't work for me either. Trying to get Pocket Blu installed, but it isn't working. TV.com isn't showing either. FWIW I have the new Market app if that means anything.

yes, and after rebooting a rechecked my build.prop file to make sure it took, and it was correct
Nevermind, I got it to work...
The end of the second line was missing the s. Put the s in, and it works perfect.
Can I get some clarification on this? I am using Mammon 1.0.3.1 and cannot get my sprint football ap to work.
Would this be an example of what this would fix?
Could the MSID number in my phone being different from my phone number be the reason it doesn't think this is a SPrint phone?
Thanks for posting a fix but it also didn't seem to work for me. I have been trying to load a program called Laser Appraiser from maket with no avail. Can anyone find it in their market?

I tried downloading it and saving it to my SD card, but it's a protected app. I use AppMonster, which backs up all the apps for when I do flashing, but it doesn't do protected ones. Sorry man, I tried.
sorry i havent replied, most of the roms out there SHOULD have this baked in... i know acs and quantum do and the cm rom should but ill ask noob just to be sure.
Hi Guys,
I am new in this forum although I am reading specific threads almost every day. I am currently using Endymion v2.2 and I am pretty happy form it. Previously I've tried some other ROMs but I think Endy is mine ROM.
In version 2.1 it was undervolted with -50 and it was working stable on my HTC Desire S. So when I've installed v2.2 from time to time I was UV it with -50. However after restart everytime it goes back to default state. So today my phone restarted incidently (happen about once per 1 or 2 days) and I've UV it with -50. After pressing Save and Activate permanently my phone freezed. No keys were working. After that it is restarting on every 20 mins. In fact it is alive for 1-5 mins, freezing for 15 mins and restarting itself. I've tried to boot it in recovery mode and deleted all types of cache (probably bad decission) but no change. I will be very thankfull if anyone have any ideas (Alternatevelly I could try to wipe and install v2.0 from scratch since it is the only one I have on the SD card)
Thanks a lot!

Change the U/V to -25 and if that doesn't work put them to default !
Also did you Underclock it?
I've tried with default and even with +25 (current one) but there is no difference.

Thats ok did you update OC/UV Beater2 as there were issues with newer versions above 1.5?
One interesting fact:
When phone is freezing all keys are not working. However I can call it! It gives a free signal but it doesn't rings. So maybe it is 'sleeping' somehow.....

Most probably since the problem begins when I've tried to do -50 in UV. But now according to OC/UV Beater2 UV is by default and OC is using the default setting which are comming from the ROM. I've revoke permissions to this application from Superuser but nothing changed
Any ideas how to swich off Undervolting/Overclocking?
Unfortunatelly I should be quite fast since I have usually 1-2 mins before next restart. (Today probably the phone restarted at least 20 times.)
I am also having my phone in the charger. I do know that I should not pull the battery in any case.
I have to travel so I will be back after about 3h. Since my phone is unuseful I will not be able to respond to this thread before I am getting back home.
Thanks to all for the help

Agreed, seems something wrong with of/iv beater. Please uninstall it completelly, by doing this (i assume you know how to use adb):
- reboot to recovery and connect USB cable
- adb remount
- delete the app from /data/app , don't quite recall the name, but its obvious once you see it
- delete /system/etc/init.d/98setvddconfig
- reboot
See if this helps.
Cheers

If you don't have time, the really important part is deleting the file in /system/etc/init.d

I've just installed Android SDK and JDK Will try to delete it on next restart probably after 10-15 mins or in worst case in next-next restart - about 30 mins. Will let you know as soon as I have some more info.
I was not quick enough in first attempt (since I had less than a min). I run ES File explorer and tried to find /system. By default it was on /sdcard and I do not know how to go to root folder and then to system (hope next time to have more time before freeze)
Btw now the phone is frozen quite funny because of back button press it is vibrating
Updated:
found this on Internet: menu->settings->root options-> check "Root Explorer" Will try it on next restart
Root Explorer option is swiched on. Now it says that /system should be mount

Hi...new here.....Originally SGS4G running froyo 2.2 with superuser, busybox, and rommanager via superoneclick psneuter option...everything saved...installed GINGERBREAD 2.3.6 stock via samsung kies mini...removed sim and sd to perform. everything about my settings and data on phone is the same...new rom very cool, crisper, brighter, nice boot animation (after tmob intro )and alot faster...however I lost all root priveledges ofcourse and am not sure how to go about re-rooting the new stock rom, or flashing back to the froyo I had set up..I'm not very concerned because nothing has changed but the root privs. ALSO...Superoneclick 2.2 won't work in ANY way at all. any ideas? or am I just stuck with this for now?

And then you need to push and install busybox using adb.

you don't have to use adb, just put this busybox into /system/xbin directory...
you can do it with RootExplorer or just in terminal.
Make sure owner, permissions are correct and make symbolic links to busybox:
#chown root.root /system/xbin/busybox
#chmod 04755 /system/xbin/busybox
#system/xbin/busybox --install -s /system/xbin
PS: you need to remount /system volume to be RW first.
Sorry took a while to get back to this...hollidays have been extremely busy for us. Anyhow I was able to SOC the gingerbread platform after a few tries and now I have a soft root for now. I'm having a hard time trying to get clockwork mod to work on my phone and from the info I've seen so far the galaxy s series phones aren't quite compatible with clockword mod for some reason. I'm still quite inexperienced in this area and haven't taken the time to look up as much info as I maybe should be. I've decided to give it a rest for now because all the offered roms I've seen short of ICSandwich are based on older firmware platforms and don't seem to offer anything very different/useful to me at this time. I'm gonna start playing around with some heimdall stuff when I get another phone to screw around with (probably an HTC). Until then, just going to enjoy 2.3.6 until 2.3.7beta gets the go. You guys here rock and keep up the info updates. I appreciate the help VERY much. BTW if u know of any newer gingerbread firmware packages that have been modded by a known good source I'd love to hear about it!
You could change the kernel if you are looking to change roms, very easy way is to download sgs kernel flasher from the market. download one of the cwm added kernals, i'm using kj1 from Dr honks thread, then open kernel flasher and find the .zip and flash

So, I'm attempting to root a Charge that the volume keys do not work. Apparently, 1 and 2 year olds who have great throwing ability is something the Charge, well, anything really, doesn't exactly appreciate. Normally, I root by going into the download mode, and flashing CWM, then installing the ROM. Obviously, not happening here.
My question is, has someone with more knowledge than I figured out how to accomplish this? Its running stock FP5. I really don't want to send it in because of the contract timing and wasteful of money. I'm also willing to experiment replacing parts, if someone knows anything about it...
Thanks.

If you have adb all set up and it properly recognizes your phone (something comes up when putting in the adb devices command) you can boot into download mode with
adb reboot download
Actually it's something I looked into recently for another member. I'm not saying it's not possible but I don't think we have the right tools for it. Originally ginger root was used via adb to root the charge but that's not going to work with our version of gb (assuming you could still find it). I'm not sure the format of cwm will work either. I'm not really proficient with adb so someone with more expertise might be able to get you going.

I also couldn't get a shell to run to get back in to uninstall. Sorry to hear of the troubles - not sure what would have caused the issue with tweaktools. You weren't able to su, or you weren't able to open terminal emulator? What were you messing with specifically in the tweaks?

Okay, Found it in ADB, and am able to reboot into download, so all is well, I think.
On the tweaktools issue, I kinda did something like this...One tweak does okay, so lets install ALL of them....after that, performed the reboot, and everything went very sloooow. So, I tried to get into a term emulator, and nothing happened, the shell wouldn't even start. Blank screen. So, I tried a different outside of ROM toolbox. Nothing. So, I played around with the settings here and there, and still nothing. I then went into root browser, and started trying to manually move the tweaks out, nothing different. So, I downloaded another term emulator, "Better Terminal Emulator" and got a bash shell to at least open, was able to get into tweaktools, erase all tweaks, clear downloads. But the shells still weren't operating right. They'd open and run, but nothing would show on screen. So, a erase/reinstall of SuperSU, everything good....LOL
Well, maybe it'll help, maybe not, but here's the path I used to do this:
Visit samsung's site for the ADB download and install to c:\android-sdk\ (default)
Put USB Debugging on in phone
Start up command line and Odin 1.82
issue following in command line (notably in the c:\android-sdk\platform-tools)
Code:
adb reboot download
Odin up some Tweaked 2.2 with recovery and kernel for root
once rebooted, issue the following in ADB shell:
Code:
adb shell
su (Checked phone to be sure root was granted)
cd /data
rm -R *
cd /cache
rm -R *
cd /dbdata rm -R *
reboot, then adb reboot download.
Flashed EP4 Stock, updated,
Updated to FP5E
Once again, USB debug, adb reboot download, and Odin Tweaked 3.1 with 0302,
follow above code again, reboot, and I think I have it right....
Since the volume keys don't work on here, is there a way to screw around in the recovery mode via ADB rather than only the keys? I see ADB sees the phone in recovery, and seems to want to connect with it....Second is, is there a way to play with this in the *nix enviroment? I also have been searching for the Gingerbreak, etc to root this thing on stock, but haven't been able to do it....and last, is there a way to do a data wipe other than what I did, and think i accomplished with ADB?
Thanks
With the CWM that I am using, you can use the hard buttons at the bottom of the phone to navigate.

Hotplug Governor:
The “hotplug” governor scales CPU frequency based on load, similar to
“ondemand”. It scales up to the highest frequency when “up_threshold”
is crossed and scales down one frequency at a time when “down_threshold”
is crossed. Unlike those governors, target frequencies are determined
by directly accessing the CPUfreq frequency table, instead of taking
some percentage of maximum available frequency.
The key difference in the “hotplug” governor is that it will disable
auxillary CPUs when the system is very idle, and enable them again once
the system becomes busy. This is achieved by averaging load over
multiple sampling periods; if CPUs were online or offlined based on a
single sampling period then thrashing will occur.

As you can see, hotplug is able to deliver you the fastest experience and the most fps in game (kernel independant), but it also allows for completely switching off one core to save battery life. In my testings, that worked very well. I also found out, that with this governor, my TF is deep-sleeping like a baby. No governor around here (not even smartassv2 ... could deliver me this performance while maintaining a decent battery life).
Tested on EOS 4.2.1 with EOS4 kernel
But try out yourself:
NOTE: This works on any 2.X kernel available (my Harmony series, ELiTE series, KatKernel series, or any other kernel except my divemaster)
Code:
1) Download a terminal emulator (if you don't have one already)
2) Download the .ko module from [URL="https://dl.dropbox.com/u/31119007/xda/hotplug-tegra-2/cpufreq_hotplug.ko"]here[/URL]
3) Remember the path you saved the module to (or preferably move it into /system/lib/modules)
4) su
5) insmod path-to-module/cpufreq_hotplug.ko
6) Switch to 'hotplug' governor with your favourite tool.
If you were too lazy to read my instructions, this is for you ..

As always, have fun, share, and report back!
I have followed the instructions, do I have to run it every reboot or just this one off?
Nothing really happened when I ran it but I guess it just loads the module.
Cheers buddy
Must say thanks again for all the amazing work!

wouldn't wake up after putting it to sleep, had to hold power button till it rebooted then it is gone from the options.
Soz
Running eos3 and kat69
Cheers
Good work! I was trying to do this same thing the cpusleeper app but couldnt get it to work. Definitely giving this a go.
Edit: installed fine but wont survive a reboot. Any fix for e this?

Got a reboot while browsing with stock browser for five minutes.
Eos81,kat kernel
The only problem as 2 people discribe abovme is RR or Random Reboot.
Thats only problem.
sounds very promising i'll try it out and report if I get any RR's.
Getting error insmod: Can't open 'path-to-module/cpufreq_hotplug.ko'
Cd to my download folder which is where it is, am I doing something wrong?

path-to-module should be the path the the module.

Wow I derped that up, thx lol.
Was running fine at 1.2 decided to bump it up to 1.4 hit apply and it rebooted on me, is also didn't stick after reboot like others have said.
In here you may find how to make permanent the governor insmod.
Long story short is "add a script in /system/etc/init.d , it can be something like 91modules. . Add execution permission and it can contain the same code as before. Reboot and it should load your module at boot (be sure that the path to your module is right).
Also, you can do that in one line as root in a terminal. First, be sure that your /system is mounted as rw, not ro. If you don't know how to do that, as root, in a terminal, execute:
Code:
mount -o remount,rw /system
Then:
Code:
echo -e \#\!/system/bin/sh'\n'insmod [B]/path/to/module[/B]/cpufreq_hotplug.ko > /system/etc/init.d/91modules | chmod +x /system/etc/init.d/91modules
"
It should load automatically next time you reboot.
I created the 91modules file and done the editing and file permission in ES File Manager, but the above instructions should work flawlessly.
Don't thank me for this. Thank MapleSyrup

Posts like this are keeping my work up and my releases coming.
People like you are the reason I am putting this much effort in this kinda old device .
For those who experience SOD/RR with hotplug and can confirm it's not related to anything else, please gimme a dsmg/ksmg (I recommend using 'Lumberjack' from the playstore (made by Chris Trotman, EOS founder).
*NO* logcat, that isn't any useful for me in this case ..
I do now have 2 days uptime with hotplug governor, not a single SOD/RR, pretty much usage (wifi on all the time, a little Riptide GP, web browsing, most of the time playing music) and still got 20% left with EOS4 kernel while achieving full performance while needed. This thing is deep-sleeping just perfectly.
I have placed the hotplug in the system this morning and my battery life still 99% im using it with dock and dono m8 but if theres any problem but seems my tf101 dont consume energy at all im starting to get scarry lol

I typed all this in and it wont survive uve a reboot. I placed the module in /system/lib/modules and typed that. When i see the | is that a new line or all one line?
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium
You can make that code in 2 commands, 1st is all before the | and 2nd the command after the |.
In order to work your final 91modules should look like
Code:
#!/system/bin/sh
insmod /system/lib/modules/cpufreq_hotplug.ko
In order to test if it's working you cat try to run it from the terminal (it may need "su" before)
Code:
./system/etc/init.d/91modules
If it's not complaining about not being executable, you may test to see if it's loaded with "lsmod".
If it's loaded it surely will survive the reboot.
I hope that helps you.
Looks like it created the 91modules file in init.d but when i try to set permissions using chmod +x it says bad mode. Maybe thats why it isnt working, wrong permissions.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium
Indeed the chmod +x command doesn't work.
You may use ES file explorer to set file permissions but also you need to allow it superuser access, mount /system as writable and "up to root" and mark execute and write to the user. At the end the file should have the following permissions: rwx r-- r--
Ill give that a try and see if that does it. Thanks!
thanks
Thanks RaymanFX, this is a great addition to our device.
Also thanks to all your work, you are keeping this device alive...
