sounds like it's connecting fine.. and you described it right, flash the stock rom in Odin first and boot up to make sure it works or do some minor set-up, then flash the latest 8/17 CWM in Odin and immediately boot into it after, make the backup then flash whatever rom/kernel you want (Gummy 2.0 has one included and will enable voodoo lagfix on first boot)
not that hard once you do it once or twice and kinda learn how it all works and whatnot

do you. mind shooting me a download. link. of stock rom and cwm what about kernals do I need to. flash a kernal or is. that included in stock. rom as well as gummy charged

GB Voodoo Lagfix Kernel (I'd recommend version 3.0.0+)
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/3426-kernel-gb-imoseyon-kernel-stock-repacked-v400-11611/
and no the stock rom does not include a custom voodoo kernel but the Gummy 2.0 package does so it will install the kernel and rom and enable voodoo lagfix on first boot (the Gummy rom package includes version 2.2.5 of that kernel I linked so it's a bit old, you can update it if you want by flashing the new one in CWM afterwards)

you don't really need to format the sd card as everything android related (not phone #'s or pictures or anything *you* put on there) will be wiped when you do the wipes in CWM

no no no stock rom in PDA first, boot up after the flash, power down and connect to Odin again and put CWM in PDA (everything goes in PDA) and flash then unplug phone after it passes and immediately boot into CWM no regular boot up.. then wipe data, dalvik (under advanced) and cache then flash Gummy or rom of your choice (custom rom build must match stock build like stock EP1W with EP1W Gummy 2.0), select reboot phone option and let the kernel activate voodoo lagfix when it boots up (may take a while)... once it starts you'll have a rooted voodoo custom rom, then you can hold the power button down until the reboot options menu comes up and select recovery to proceed to flash the updated kernel if you want
also the modems will be the ones installed with the stock rom, but you can flash new ones in Odin in the PDA section if you want

probably because the rom didn't include a custom kernel or for whatever reason it didn't make it work.. flash or reflash a custom kernel and there won't be any more problems

flashed bionix frost rom stuck on galaxy s screen

Ok so im new and I flashed my SGS4G using these directions to a T!
i would start with krylon final cwm. his directions are pretty straightforward. i used root explorer to move the file where it needed to be.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1099374
i am assuming you downloaded the rom already from the CWM rom section in the bible. its up to you. im biased towards bionix frost, but black ice is just as amazing.
i would also dl the ext converter and bali 3.1 kernel as well. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1123039) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1080871). place all of the zip files you download into the root of your sd card....which means that if you connect your phone to the computer and open it using windows explorer, it is that first window, which lists all of the folders. dont put these files in folders or anything.
once that is done, i restarted my phone in recovery shutting down fully and pressing the power+volume up+volume down. once there, i went to reinstall packages to get into cwm.
then when this loads, i wiped the system/factory reset and wiped the cache. then i went to mounts and storage and mounted my system. (the final mounting output should be: unmount, mount, mount, unmount). i then scrolled to "go back"
i choose install zip file from sd card. choose zip file, which should be the second option if my memory serves me right. scroll of ext converter and install that one. then when that is done, go back to install file from sd card, choose black ice or frost (i LOVE frost) and install that one. then when that is done, i flash my bali 3.1 uv kernel. when that is flashed, i click go back and choose reboot system. once that is done, you will see the galaxy s screen for like 5 min or so followed by the team whiskey logo. once you see this, it will take another minute or so to load up. once you see that the rom loads up...LET THE PHONE SIT FOR 10 minutes. i know it seems long, but just let it sit.
after 10 min or so, i would go into your about phone options and check and see that you have bali3.1 and that the rom is correct.
do these tweaks as well
fugu (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1127069)
init.d (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...ghlight=init.d)
you can flash a modem too (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1117331) using the same process as flashing any other zip file.
remember, the first option in choosing a zip file is update.zip from krylons final cwm. do not flash this after the rom/ext/whatever. im not sure if this has been addressed (im still a noob), but everytime i did that, i bricked my phone. lol. so just to answer your question before you wonder...cause i always wondered whether i should flash that or not. lol.
But after all this I get stuck at the galaxy S screen for more than 5minutes although it will let me back into recovery mode. Its called the "CwM voodoo lagfix recovery v3.0.2.8x" and then gives me a list of options. WHAT SHOULD I DO???
I would ODIN back to KD1 and redo it, but really make sure you have the mounts correct (I know you checked this already, but check it again.) If it still does not work, then I would still go back to KD1 and then try it again by re-downloading all the zip files again. That's what I had to do.
Those were my directions! Was my fault. Ext4 needs a supported kernel. You have one now. Go back into cwm and retry everything starting from wiping the cache and system. sorry about that.
Check your mounts after the ext4 converter just to be safe.

No, it didn't work cause you were coming off of stock. The ext4 converter needs a compatible kernel...which you didn't have. Now that you have that red cwm, you are running a compatible kernel. So everything should work now. Reflash everything like I started before after you wipe everything. It should work ok. Like I said it was my fault for not mentioning that, not something you did.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA Premium App
If you are no longer on the bali kernel, flash bionix, so you have bali 2.1, and then flash everything according to my directions. Ext4 will only work if you have the compatible kernel.

Bricked Phone

My son bricked his phone last night! I'm not familiar with samsung and odin at all. I have an evo and I'm always installing roms on my phone, so I'm aware of the process. Can someone please explain to me how to fix his device using odin. I have already installed the proper drivers and odin software. I'm not sure of what rom or where to get a stock rom from. I also dont know the process or steps to begin usin odin.
Thanks

Ok, I flashed the rom in recovery and it just sits on the splash screen. It's not boot looping, just sitting on the splash screen.
look up the noobs guide to odin in the bible and follow that. you should be up and running after that.

not trying to flood the q and a but need help with cwm odin...

so i have just about all the files i need 1. ep1w stock debloated.tar.md5 i have this i assume i flash this via pda but i was told i need to flash a kernal with this??? is this true... cause i just want to flash gummycharged 2.0 2. i have a file called recovery_charge.odin.md5.tar is this the correct cwm i have been hearing people having issues with the newest version whitch i had previously and could not fix don't want it to happen again. 3.can i just flash my rom of choce via odin like gummycharged odin version or humble 5.0 ?? plus the most recent cwm won't let me download anyway...
Yea I'd d/l the imeyosen 4 kernel.it is very fast and stable. Also has smartass and interactive x governors, which u have to enable in terminal emulator tho
i am not currently rooted but what do i do?? i flash the stock rom reboot and then flash a kernal via odin?? what about cwm?
ok looks like i already have this on my desktop but there is no way to flash this i do not have cwm yet that is my biggest hurdle i just want gummy charged... and people were having issues with the lastest cmw..
Well I can tell ya what I used when i got my charge. The thread in development I think is called root, kernel, cwm. That got me rooted with voodoo.then I just worked my way up from there. Upgraded my radio to ep3 made a huge difference for signal strength.then to ep4. Then I odin'd humble 4 which came with cwm. I then flashed emoysen 4 in cwm. Then flashed humble 5. I haven't had any problems with the cwm version he included.
But all that jumping around aside. I think you can Odin the radio straight to ep4 and Odin to humble 4 and after that do whatever you want in cwm.
so technically i can just flash the humble 5.0 odin file without being rooted and it will give me root and cwm haven't rooted yet or any rom for that matter i was just wanting to flash one rom and i am good to go such as gummy charge 2.0 odin or humble i don't plan on flashing a whole lot..
Well I can't remember if humble 5 has a kernel. I know it didn't when i d/l it. Unless the post has been updated. That's why i said go humble 4 first .it includes imoysen 3 .1 kernel I believe
And I'll say in my personal experience humble 5 is the most stable with best battery I've ran yet. And I've flashed every single rom there is for the charge. But it varies from phone to phone
so with no root i can just flash humble 4.0 and i am rooted with kernal and i am done??

I may need someone else to chime in cuz i didn't do it this way. But i think Odin with a rooted rom and kernel does it. I'm about 90 percent sure of that . Somebody? Anybody?
Also its worth it to upgrade ur radio to at ep4.
Just remember use the PDA button only in Odin
would like some assurance of a better possibility i guess technically i flash the stock ep1w debloated rom boot up, power off back to odin flash that cwm version you mentioned earlier in the thread do a backup in cwm and then flash via cwm.... correct.. don't mean to make things complicated..

Should be able to Odin one of these. latest is 8/17 .make sure u Odin a gb radio too. They have better reception and less data drops. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112804
I'd recommend humble. Its been alot more stable than gummy was for me. Tho gummy has a few more settings u can tweak thru tsm parts. Sometimes the juice isn't worth the squeeze
---------- Post added at 11:46 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:38 AM ----------
I suggest go ahead and flash this radio. Don't touch it while its flashing and put battery back in after its in download mode before you hit start on Odin as extra precaution. Hiccups during radio flashes are bout the only way to actually brick a phone ....or so I've read. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1339214

Ok just got this phone and have decided to go with Phoenix Blood rom, but how do i start? I have to be on froyo to root? Im coming from samsung epic on sprint that i flashed so im not completely retarded. Thanks for any help
Use superoneclick to root on froyo.
If your on 2.3.3 gb there's a flashable. Zip in development section to root.
Also you will want to use tgagunnmans nvflash method to install clockworkmod recovery in dev section.
Phoenix blood is a great choice btw, enjoy!

You're still on Froyo? To my understanding it's a good idea to flash the OTA GB first so that you'll get the up to date baseband. Once that's done just go ahead and flash PB.
no im on gb jsut thought i had to go back to froyo to root, so i just flash clockwork mod then pb and thats it?

Yes, but make sure you're using NVFlash to get CWM. Don't use Rom Manager.
Easiest way is using the tool unlockroot. It supports gb on the G2X. Or you can use nvflash, whichever you prefer.

From that thread:
Flashing the custom recovery using NvFlash is the only way to ensure that in the case your phone will not boot up, you will be able to get into recovery to fix the issue / flash a ROM / restore from nandroid backup. That is what this app will do for you.
If you flashed the ClockworkMod recovery from ROM Manager it does not flash the recovery to your phone, it fake flashed it. The only way you can gain access to ClockworkMod recovery is through ROM Manager at that point. Using this method is the only way to flash recovery so it is persistent and accessible booting to recovery.
If you have already flashed through ROM Manager you can still proceed with this method. Flash Away!
(You can use both ROM Manager CWM and have the nvflashed version working together. You just access either or one at a time, having the nvflashed one means you can boot to CWM. Welcome to Tegra2)

Follow the link. This is a must for tegra 2 based phones. It is always better to be safe than sorry and it also allows you to do a ton of other things, such as making backups and flashing roms. Let us know if you need help. The phone is pretty much unbrickable after you do this. It gives you the ability to recover from any major mistake.
Its in the dev thread, it low level flashes clockworkmod recovery to our phones internal memory partition. You need to install apx drivers first in order for the g2x to be nvflashed.

Just to add in, nvflash allows u to boot into cwm recovery whenever u want and u don't need to be next to a computer. I think that is how it worked for Samsung phones and Odin, where u needed a computer, but haven't used a Samsung phone so I could be wrong. Remember always make a back up of everything and play around with the different roms, not every rom works for everyone
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
Actually Odin is just like nvflash. It is used to put cwm on you phone and to put the stock recovery back on.
Once you have cwm you can flash what ever rom or kernel without the need for root. Just back up your stock unrooted stock rom before flashing anything else.
If you do that you will have your own stock backup with no need of finding it in the forums if you need to go back to stock.

I had this happen to me when I tried to flash CNA b4. No matter what I did I could not get out of recovery when trying to flash. I thought for sure I would have to go back to stock but I just fully wiped and reinstalled AOKP with no problems. It may have been a bad download or something but I had that issue as well.
