My son bricked his phone last night! I'm not familiar with samsung and odin at all. I have an evo and I'm always installing roms on my phone, so I'm aware of the process. Can someone please explain to me how to fix his device using odin. I have already installed the proper drivers and odin software. I'm not sure of what rom or where to get a stock rom from. I also dont know the process or steps to begin usin odin.
Thanks

from that link, go to the op, find the noobs guide to Odin and follow that. if you want, you can Odin to a different ROM. But I would suggest sticking with a froyo one until you know what you are doing

Ok odin worked. But now its stuck on the boot image. I can boot into recovery but when I restart my sons phone, it gets stuck at the boot image. Im not sure what I'm doing wrong.

odin it the first one
you'll boot to cwm
go to voodoo
disable lagfix and system.
factory reset clear cache
reboot.
put the second one on the root of your sd card
reboot recovery
flash audiophile(if your son like music he'll dig it).
Hope that works for you.

people still use those. SO last week. He says running audio ftw.
Just trying to point the guy in the get my phone fixed direction. I'll edit the post and make sure he boots to audio!
when they are talking about mounting, what does that mean. I see it in recocery, but when i select it, nothing happens.
Ok, I flashed the rom in recovery and it just sits on the splash screen. It's not boot looping, just sitting on the splash screen.
look up the noobs guide to odin in the bible and follow that. you should be up and running after that.

I tried to flash a rom with CWM but i couldnt mount sd, it gave me an error, then phone would not boot. I got into download mode and am trying to ODIN back to stock, but all i get is the 3e recovery loop. any ideas? in the recovery (3e) after one flashes, it gives: E:cant mount /dev/block/st110; E:delete_files_for_s1_data:cant mount DATA; Cache wipe failed. any help would be appreciated
which rom are you flashing with odin?
open odin 1.7 first on your computer
put your phone in download mode
odin should detect it
use ODIN whitehawkx KC1 found on this page
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117554
then just press start and wait for it to finish (approx. 2mins 35secs for me)
when its done, it will reboot you into the blue stock recovery and just reboot it and let the rom load for 10mins or so
i tried the stock KD1, the screen turned all blue one time, and when i threw my sd into my computer, it was in read-only state, and couldnt add or delete any files
Don't do kd1. go into the bible and find the noobs guide to odin. Follow those directions and you should be ok. Let me know how it goes

Hey Guys, I have the Samsung Galaxy S 4G. I've been trying to root and I've ran into so many problems. I use SuperOneClick. It usually doesn't work or just freezes. Before you call me a noob. Yes I have the Drivers. Yes I've tried different versions of Drivers. Yes I used different versions of SuperOneClick including Latest and Older that have been said to work. Yes I used different exploits for both versions in SuperOneClick. Yes I've ran as Administrator as well. I have Windows 7 32 Bit. I just don't know what's wrong!

It's boot looping now. It goes to homescreen scans SD card then reboots. The instructions tell me to do this.
- Install kernel using ODIN version, phone will reboot automatically.
- Go to recovery (adb reboot recovery).
- Disable voodoo

- Install busybox from market
- Go to recovery (adb reboot recovery)
- Enable voodoo
- Reboot
But do I get into adb reboot recovery? I feel like such a noob...

Here's the translation:
1) flash the kernel in PDA
2) let it boot up; shut down; go into CWM with volume up, volume down, and power
3) once in CWM, Voodoo > turn ext4 off
4) reboot
5) install busybox by Stericson in the market
6) go back to CWM with the same method as before
7) enable Voodoo
8) reboot your ROM and hear Linda convert your file system to ext4. She should say "convert data partition", "convert system partition", and end with "Voodoo lagfix is now activated".
To double check if Voodoo is activated, download the Voodoo app and check to see if ext4 is on /cache, /data, and /system.
Any GB ROM right now could pretty much be flashed over that without a problem.
I hope I helped!

sounds like it's connecting fine.. and you described it right, flash the stock rom in Odin first and boot up to make sure it works or do some minor set-up, then flash the latest 8/17 CWM in Odin and immediately boot into it after, make the backup then flash whatever rom/kernel you want (Gummy 2.0 has one included and will enable voodoo lagfix on first boot)
not that hard once you do it once or twice and kinda learn how it all works and whatnot

and no the stock rom does not include a custom voodoo kernel but the Gummy 2.0 package does so it will install the kernel and rom and enable voodoo lagfix on first boot (the Gummy rom package includes version 2.2.5 of that kernel I linked so it's a bit old, you can update it if you want by flashing the new one in CWM afterwards)

no no no stock rom in PDA first, boot up after the flash, power down and connect to Odin again and put CWM in PDA (everything goes in PDA) and flash then unplug phone after it passes and immediately boot into CWM no regular boot up.. then wipe data, dalvik (under advanced) and cache then flash Gummy or rom of your choice (custom rom build must match stock build like stock EP1W with EP1W Gummy 2.0), select reboot phone option and let the kernel activate voodoo lagfix when it boots up (may take a while)... once it starts you'll have a rooted voodoo custom rom, then you can hold the power button down until the reboot options menu comes up and select recovery to proceed to flash the updated kernel if you want
also the modems will be the ones installed with the stock rom, but you can flash new ones in Odin in the PDA section if you want

So here is my dilemma. I have the Galaxy S4g the stock firmware version 2.3.6 gingerbread. Since this update, my phone has become less and less stable. I therefore would like to try out some custom roms. I have my device rooted using superoneclick root.
Tried to flash CWM Final, following the instructions, including pasting recovery in the system/bin folder. Further research led me to the understanding that just using this method will not work with a device running 2.3.6.
Problem one, was when I tried to paste the recovery file, there was not in the /bin folder. I did notice that the recovery file is in the root directory of the phone. Can I replace this recovery file with the modified one in the root directory, and then will this allow me to flash CWM ?
If not, is it possible to even flash cwm onto the GS4G? IF so, I am sure that there is a how to out there somewhere.
Some help would be greatly appreciated here.

I had the same issue. recovery goes in sysbin folder.
next make sure the rom you eventually would like to use is in your root.
next you'll have to use heimedall and flash the appropriate kernal (kj6 is what I used, from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1380331
reboot after that and make your necessary changes to the mount system as required by the dev of your desired rom, and follow their instructions to flash.
