Infuse switching between HSPA+/3g/Edge - Samsung Infuse 4G

Ok so I'm looking for a little clarification on this issue. I've searched the threads and have gotten different answers each time.
My question is does the Infuse support 3G service?
I know that if your out of ranger of HSPA+ it will drop to Edge, but i can't find if 3G is supposed on the infuse.
It would seem kind of stupid to me if 3G wasn't supported...

Yes. It does support Edge, 3G, and 4G.

G2x 3G????

I have noticed in the 3 days since I have had my g2x that I never get 3g, I either get 2g or 4g on my status bar, but never 3g. Anybody else having this issue?? Considering sending it back to TMO for a new one. And yes I have a new similar card, got it about 3 months ago when I had my G2.

I've noticed the same thing though idk if that's really a bad thing....
They probably lumped 3g and 4g together.
That's what I was thinking but wasn't sure.....has anyone seen 3G on their status bar ever????

Come to think of it... I haven't.

I've read other threads here where people report seeing a 3G icon... I haven't seen it myself.
But it's possible that we're in areas where HSPA+ is turned on, which is "4G", and once you leave that range, you are in 2G (EDGE) territory. In other words, there's no area near us that is just HSPA (3G), it's either HSPA+ or EDGE.
Too many people not doing a search. No one has seen the 3g logo/symbol yet. Also a side note for those complaining about 4g speeds:
T-Mobile USA uses the 1700/2100 MHz AWS Band for its 3G network. The carrier states it allows faster download and upload data speeds utilizing HSPA+ technology, which allows for simultaneous voice and data. Upgrades to HSPA+ are planned for 2009 through 2010 which may boost average download speeds from 7.2Mbps to 21Mbps. (Reported from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-Mobile)
But my old G2 that I had just a few days ago hag Edge(2G), 3G, and H(HSPA/4G). Now with my new g2x it's either 2G, or 4G. No 3G.

yes they are lump together. It's always 4g or 2g. It's a marketing thing, they want us to think that we always have 4g, when a lot of the time we're only getting 3g speeds.

This, its not that we don't have 3g. Its that the display in the upper right hand corner says either 2g or 4g.

I agree. My "4G" speeds range from 1.5 Mbps to 7.0 Mbps down depending on my physical location

Actually there is a thread here where someone stated they did see 3G (I'm skeptical) on a long distance driving trip they did.
There is also a comment from someone that the "missing" 3G icon is a bug TMO is aware of and will fix in the first software update. Take it for what it's worth (although I would believe this one).
You will not see a 3G icon appear on any TMO 4G device.
Here is the reason:T-Mobile is using the same frequencies for 3G as they do for "4G". Meaning they are using the same cell tower/antenna. The upgrade in speed comes from a base station software upgrade and a strengthened backhaul. HSPA+ devices branded as 4G literally cannot tell the difference between 3G and 4G.

You forgot a technology: UMTS (on which HSPA is based). It can tell the difference between UMTS and HSPA (but not HSPA and HSPA+). That's why other phones have had separate "3G" and "H" icons. Both were originally 3G technologies (in the same way that GPRS and EDGE are both 2G), but HSPA has been expanded to now qualify as a 4G technology (I'm not going to argue semantics here, HSPA+ is 4G and provides faster speeds than WiMAX).
Has anyone pulled apart the framework-res.apk to see if there's a 3G png in there?
I haven't seen 3g sign either, only 2g or 4g, mostly 2g though, and I'm in vegas... I'm returning the phone for that reason, and I have very bad light bleeding from the top corners too. When calling t mobile, they don't even try to troubleshoot, I guess they r aware of that problem already. Now I'm waiting for another one in the mail

Just to add: The G2x is limited to 14.4Mbps theoretical maximum download speed So you won't enjoy anywhere near 21Mbps, or 42Mbps which is now rolling out slowly and is already in 3 cities (Las Vegas, NYC, Orlando). The most I've gotten on my G2x is 7.9Mbps down.

I can understand returning the phone because of the bleeding but to say your going to return the device because you haven't seen a 3G icon is laughable.

My beef is not the lack of a 3G icon, although I have yet to see one on my phone.
My beef is the lack of reception at my work, a problem the Galaxy S 4G and MyTouch 4G dont seem to have.
And why does the phone say UMTS when its on 4G ?
That right there tends to make me think the phone has an issue
(along with poor/no reception at work).

[Q] Can i get 4G

I have a rooted samsung Fascinate. I want to know if there is any app or anything that I can do to get it to recieve 4g from verizion. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I only ask because my town has 4g, but I only ever have 1-2 bars of 3g data service at any time. So if anybody knows if I can get 4g, or any way to get a better 3g signal.
Addt info: It is not any problem with my phone, most people in my town have terrible verizon 3g ever since they added 4g
nope its a radio and internal drivers thing.
No, Verizon 4G or LTE requires completely different hardware for the radio inside. The reason your service is suffering from the advent of 4G is due to Verizon converting existing 3G sites to 4G.
When this is done, 3G signal will depricate as there will be less 3G radios serving your zone.

[Q] Band Switching capabilities for Froyo?

Hey guys,
I was just wondering, is there any way to get band switching to work on our phones? (Example: being able to switch from HSPA+ to EDGE) This would be very helpful to me, since I frequently visit an area of VERY spotty 3g (to the point where it cannot connect to the web because it's taking too much time to switch back and forth). I know that my old Captivate was able to do make one band stick by going to settings>wireless and networks>and then there was an option there to switch. I saw this available in the Gingerbread version of Infused, and I am currently running Froyo infused (I like the better video camera) Is there a way to edit the build.prop to allow this or something? Thank you in advance.
I, too, would love this. Where I live the phone will only connect to 3g if I select hspa only in the infused v.2 rom. I would love to go back to froyo because of the video recording but I need to be able to select hspa only.

You can only do it with the Rogers modem.... You can find it in the modem thread in the dev section...

Doesn't that seem odd, though? BTW, I get significantly lower HSPA+ speeds with the Rogers modem than the AT&T one. I guess I'll have to deal with it. It just seems odd that devs haven't looked into why this is.

Why is a 4G phone getting 3G speeds

So on my phone It says 3G at the top. Sometimes. It says H. But I have miui Tom currently and probably forever? Most of the time when I wana download something from the market I have to pull down the drop down menu and turn off the data icon and turn it back on to refresh the data. Wait for a few seconds and let it work again. I have no problems texting and receiving them. Or browsing the internet. But for the market I'm having to refresh the data. Wondering if there is anything I could do

the lack of an h or 4g is just indicating that you dont have a hspa connection which has more to do with your area than your phone. the infuse is a 3g device but t-mo started advertising the hspa+ as 4g and att followed. it still operates on the same network and technology as 3g but is faster. 4g is lte (which the infuse doesn't have.) or wimax i guess but that is crappy sprint 4g that is not faster than att 3g and is only deserving of the 4g title because it is literally there 4th generation data network, not because it is actually comperable.
in other countries h and h+ are refered to as 3.5g and/or 3g+ because it is not truely a new generation of network, just 3g made faster.
the market problem is probably do to it being a i9000 port. i dont know what the nature of the bug is but it shows on the i9000 roms and i havent run an aosp rom so i dont know if it is normal for miui or not.

Ohh OK. So 4G doesn't mean 4G speeds. It means 4th generation. As in new. I always thought 4G meant speed 4 ghz or something of high speed data. Something to do with speed. Now that I think of it. G stands for Generation. Anyway thanks

The speeds do get faster as the generations progresses, but actual 4g speeds were supposed to be 100mb lol that failed haha. Anyway the market problem happens to me too. If you search apns in CM7 or the MIUI forum there is a fix. I applied it before, and it worked. I am just too lazy to do it again because for me it is not that big of a pain lol.
You won't always have 4G speeds. It's more like 3G+ lol. HSPA+. Get it? Lol if you want 4G speeds for LTE

I heard somewhere that MIUI doesn't support 4G the same as the stock ROM. When I used MIUI I got slower speeds than stock. Not significantly slower, but "meh" speeds. Otherwise there isn't much of a difference, it only switched to actual "4G" when you're downloading something anyway..

Questions regarding LTE and HSPA+/3G

Hi all, did a search and found nothing about this so here we go.
First thing's first, I'm on Telus up here in frosty Canada.
First question: Why is that under the Mobile Network settings, where you can change from LTE to 3G or 2G, it says "(recommended)" next to LTE? Is Google trying to say that it's more reliable when in LTE mode?
Second: While using Google Now, on Telus' HSPA+ (3G mode), I get spotty results; it sometimes fails to find a connection even though I *am* connected. Other apps have issues loading as well. However, when I switch to LTE mode, it works fine while on LTE AND if it auto-switches to HSPA+, like at work where I don't get LTE. Would this be an issue with the phone or with Telus?
Thanks!
First, LTE is the most modern and fastest. Its "recommended" so noobs who don't know what lte is know that its recommended or best
