[Q] Screen Brightness problem! - HTC Sensation

I love my phone, I haven't put any ROM's on it yet. Since I've had my phone my screen brightness will just randomly change. It's so weird. I almost always have the box checked for the auto brightness. Then every once and a while I'll notice that it's set to the highest setting, so I have to go in and change it back. Not a huge deal it just gets annoying. Does anyone else experience this? Is there a way I can fix it?

If you have it on auto, then it will change automatically depending on how much light is around you when you hold the phone. I didn't understand, if the auto setting goes off on it's own or what?

You're not alone. I always use auto but a couple of times now I've noticed that the screen looks very bright and when I've looked at the settings, the tick isn't in the auto selection box.

So, I have the auto brightness selected, and that works great for a while. Then I'll notice that the screen is exceptionally bright. I'll check the settings, and the phone just defaulted to the highest brightness setting. The auto brightness isn't even selected anymore. Not a huge deal, but I hope there's a way to fix it.

Yeah, I'll have auto brightness selected. But randomly I'll notice that my screen is really bright and not adjusting. So I'll check. And the auto is no longer selected, instead it is set to the brightest setting. It's super weird. I'm glad to see that it's not just me. It happens a couple times a week. It's not a huge deal, I'd just like to find a way to fix it.

In case you're curious, I found that the camera triggers it. I placed brightness on lowest setting, then selected the camera app, and the brightness goes way up then doesn't change after you leave the camera. That's about all I know lol.

Looking for a simple brightness managment app

All I want is an application that can switch between Auto Brightness to Minimum setting (OS specified or lower) at specific time, time when it gets dark. or maybe it can choose the time automatically based on dusk and dawn.
I noticed that Auto setting NEVER drops to minimal setting for some reason......

There is an app called Timeriffic (I think that's how it's spelled). You just input the settings into the app and at that predetermined time, it will adjust settings (including brightness, not sure about auto brightness).
I have it set so that at a certain time (when I leave the house) it will turn off the wifi, turn on vibrate, etc...
But if you fall out of your routine, you kind of go bonkers because you forget that you have timeriffic set and can't figure out why the wifi turned off, etc... LoL!
How about just using Power Widget when to switch between auto/minimal when you realize the screen is too bright?
Thanks. Timeriffic gets the job done, but i wish it would support auto brightness. using power widget doesnt work for me because if i forget to switch back to auto setting, in sunny day i cant even see the screen at all and have to find shaded area just to switch back

Yeah I've had to learn where certain objects are on my home screen.

Haptic feedback is my friend
It's a shame, OLEDs are so much better than TFT screens for battery conservation but they suck in the light, you know, outside, the one place you are most likely to use your MOBILE phone. Ah well, it performs almost as well as the iPhone when the N1's on full brightness. I held it next to my friend's 3GS, but thinking about it forgot to check what brightness hers was on... DOH.
I think they've corrected it now though, with newer designs.
There is also an app that is called auto bright and it can be made into a homescreen shortcut and is basically a macro that turns on autobright. I put it next to my power control widget so in the case where I need to switch brightness manually I can easily switch back. FYI Froyo's power widget has added the autobright setting so soon as a stable version of Froyo comes out this will be a mute point.

OP pointed out (correctly) the Automatic Brightness setting will never automatically set the brightness to the minimum point (that is, as low as you could set it manually). I can confirm that, though Froyo does include the Automatic option on the power control widget, it still won't go all the way dim. It seems rather silly that the Automatic range doesn't go all the way down.
Also, the word you're after is "moot", not mute.

yes. thats correct. if auto setting would go all the way down, then i would not need any 3rd party software to begin with. i really wish we could adjust the range and sensitivity of the sensor
ps. developer of Timeriffic said that its not possible to add Auto Brightness setting to his app because there is no API for that and the only way around is to hack it.

Dark screen when opening camera

Recently I noticed that whenever I open the stock camera app the screen went very dark. I thought something wrong with the app so I installed another camera app and it had the same symptoms. Interestingly that the pictures came out all right. After some thinking I went to the display options, unchecked the automatic brightness and moved the slider from 0 all the way up to full brightness. That immediately solved the problem. So here is the FYI, it seems like the camera API disregards the automatic brightness option and always uses the manual setting.
P.S. I was considering resetting the phone because I couldn't figure out that nuisance at first. Luckily I didn't have to.

Fixed mine, as well.
There is also a screen brightness setting within the camera app.

Auto brightness not working?

Hi guys,Iam not sure auto brightness works for me? Can someone tell me if its fine on they're device? With my htc one i had auto brightness ticked and if i went from a dark room to a room with light ........... i would see the screen get brighter, as it was meant to, but on this phone iam seeing no change? unless its very subtle!! I have auto brightness ticked and the brightness bar just above half way just as i had done on my htc one! If i untick auto brightness then the brightness near blinds me lol so iam not sure why it isnt working in auto mode!
Its because on Sony phones, this change is more slowly so it appers to you that light is always the same "its slow, so your eyes can get used to new setting"..
It is more natural than change in one second.
I have tried this by sticking the phone under a led lamp to check it and the post advice this is correct. You have to concentrate on the screen to notice it changing.

Interesting, Thanks guys!

[Q] Auto brightness

What am i missing regarding screen auto brightness? I keep having to manually change brightness when going from light to dark places even though i have "adapt to lighting conditions" ticked?
It feels like im wasting battery having the screen so bright at night unless i turn it down, then I have to turn it up again in the morning.. Some secret setting?

Same here, Someone said that the screen does dim but it does so slowly so you barely notice it! Hoever iam not convinced! Iam almost certain mine is not adjusting at all
For normal day light conditions i feel the auto brightness adjusts very well. Its definitely better than the s4 i had. I have the auto brightness selected and the bar at 50%. I agree for night time reading i have to manually adjust the brightness may be its not as quick to adjust in very low light conditions compared to day light
I was using CM11 on the S4 which had very good brightness control, not sure about standard. I agree during the day I don't have problems at all, and the screen is very good. It's just when I'm somewhere with low brightness and I have to turn it down, and then when I go back into day I have to turn it back up again. Pretty annoying having to change it all the time.
I will get an app to do it for me for now, but this must be some sort of bug this action couldn't be on purpose.

I find the auto brightness not very good.
Sometimes when the lighting condition does not change, it will start to increase/decrease the brightness to the level which does not suit the lighting condition.
It also have the tendency to favor lower brightness.
Thinking of trying out Lux Auto Brightness instead.

I don't know if you mean to test the sensor, but the sensor works absolutely fine (with other apps)
My auto brightness works just fine and i have mine on lowest possible setting.

auto-brightness is terrible [SOLVED]

Way too bright. Never remembers my preferences. Every time I turn in the screen, even in a dark room, brightness us 50%. I'm constantly turning it down but it goes back up.
How can I fix this? I refuse to believe my only option is a third party brightness app.
-EDIT- Here's the solve:
Just go to apps>settings>applications>application manager>more>reset apps preferences. This clears out any personalized brightness settings. This worked immediately.
Well turn auto brightness off.

You know that's not a solution...
Yes that is, you set the brightness the level you want, manually.

No. I want auto brightness to adjust to the ambient light. That's the point of auto brightness. 50% brightness in a movie theatre means something isn't working right. And the S7 auto brightness is supposed to be personalized to the user but obviously this isn't working either.
Mine is working just fine in any ambient, I don't know what settings you mess up with.

I don't know! users are prone to do such a thing when they mess up with their phone.
Make a backup, reset your phone and try again. Mine still works just fine.
alright, smart alecs. Just talked to Samsung Support. Just simply go to apps>settings>applications>application manager>more>reset apps preferences. This seemed to fix it. The tech said sometimes carrier updates can corrupt settings. So that's neat...

How do you mess up with app manager?
Installing stuff on your smartphone!
So...
Users are prone to do this. Again mine and everybody's else are working just fine.

I don't understand what you're saying. I didn't mess up any settings because there are none for me to mess up. But thanks for the help?

Every time you install an app on your phone they change something. Some times are nothing important, other times they mess with the whole system settings.
Glad your settings are working now.
Actually i had the same problem when i got the phone, did a bit of search n found it has a smart brightness feature.
You have to choose ur brightness level according to the ambient light in the room cuz it remembers each time you set the brightness level according how much light the sensor is picking.
Short answer, keep changing the level of brightness for couple days until it learns the new levels.

Ya I did all of that and it wasn't adjusting to my preferences. That's was the problem. Resetting as described fixed it as it relearned my preferences

When I'm outdoor in extreme sunlight the phone's brightness goes all the way up and then it enters a mode where colours seems washed out. But only if the light is very strong. Does your S7 behave the same?
I may have to give that app settings reset a try. At first the auto function seemed fine. As time passed it grew worse. However, mine would be too dark in dimly lit situations and semi-acceptable in bright conditions. I finally turned off automatic as it was extremely annoying and almost always incorrect.

Yes. That's a special boost mode I think. Without it the screen wouldn't get bright enough to see well.
