auto-brightness is terrible [SOLVED] - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

Way too bright. Never remembers my preferences. Every time I turn in the screen, even in a dark room, brightness us 50%. I'm constantly turning it down but it goes back up.
How can I fix this? I refuse to believe my only option is a third party brightness app.
-EDIT- Here's the solve:
Just go to apps>settings>applications>application manager>more>reset apps preferences. This clears out any personalized brightness settings. This worked immediately.

Well turn auto brightness off.

You know that's not a solution...

Yes that is, you set the brightness the level you want, manually.

No. I want auto brightness to adjust to the ambient light. That's the point of auto brightness. 50% brightness in a movie theatre means something isn't working right. And the S7 auto brightness is supposed to be personalized to the user but obviously this isn't working either.

Mine is working just fine in any ambient, I don't know what settings you mess up with.

I don't know! users are prone to do such a thing when they mess up with their phone.
Make a backup, reset your phone and try again. Mine still works just fine.

alright, smart alecs. Just talked to Samsung Support. Just simply go to apps>settings>applications>application manager>more>reset apps preferences. This seemed to fix it. The tech said sometimes carrier updates can corrupt settings. So that's neat...

How do you mess up with app manager?
Installing stuff on your smartphone!

Users are prone to do this. Again mine and everybody's else are working just fine.

Every time you install an app on your phone they change something. Some times are nothing important, other times they mess with the whole system settings.
Glad your settings are working now.

Actually i had the same problem when i got the phone, did a bit of search n found it has a smart brightness feature.
You have to choose ur brightness level according to the ambient light in the room cuz it remembers each time you set the brightness level according how much light the sensor is picking.
Short answer, keep changing the level of brightness for couple days until it learns the new levels.

Ya I did all of that and it wasn't adjusting to my preferences. That's was the problem. Resetting as described fixed it as it relearned my preferences

When I'm outdoor in extreme sunlight the phone's brightness goes all the way up and then it enters a mode where colours seems washed out. But only if the light is very strong. Does your S7 behave the same?

I may have to give that app settings reset a try. At first the auto function seemed fine. As time passed it grew worse. However, mine would be too dark in dimly lit situations and semi-acceptable in bright conditions. I finally turned off automatic as it was extremely annoying and almost always incorrect.

Yes. That's a special boost mode I think. Without it the screen wouldn't get bright enough to see well.

Auto brightness keeps reset to manual brightness.....

Hi!
My auto brightness keeps resetting it selfs back to manual brightness.
Does anyone know why?
Mine does that too, usually when I go into Settings. I know other people have had trouble with it resetting after using the camera.

+1 same here. Every time that my phone power dips below a certain number it disables auto brightness and puts the brightness to full, which is not only annoying, it is counter intuitive. I've tried changing my brightness to something low before enabling auto brightness, in hopes that when the phone disables auto brightness on low power it will move to a low brightness state, but that doesn't do anything either. It still goes to full brightness when battery levels get low enough.

Same for me, so what I do is use the dimmer app, and so when my power gets low and the brightness goes to full, I click the widget and it turns the brightness down to minimum.
I've got the same problem, and I am just using the default HTC sense software, no custom firmware flashed.

Clear what and where?
I think they mean in settings/applications/manage applications/all
But Im not sure if they mean the HTC sense software entries, to clear the data for those. Be warned though, I think this will reset all your settings and customizations.

*****NEED HELP**** Galaxy S6 brightness issue

My S6 keeps randomly changing brightness even though auto brightness is off. And so I found this option via search within settings, which may very well be exactly what I was looking for but couldn't seem find it in the settings menu in developer option. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Have you tried turning off Adaptive Display? It's in Settings/Display/Screen Mode. Try any other mode besides adaptive and see if that fixes it.
If your screen still changes brightness on it's own take it in, it's most likely faulty.

HI thank for the reply. I have switched from modes to modes but it happens randomly(perhaps lighting conditions?) I suspect it's settings shown on my screenshot(according to the description) on the first post that may have been toggled on by default? But I have no luck finding that very option in developer's menu. And my power saving and auto brightness are off. Are you able to find the option?
I have had the same issues with my Note3 and Note 5. Mostly when I'm watching fullscreen video. I have to set it to maximum brightness to see outside during the day in Las Vegas because the sun is bright. But if my phone light sensor (right next to the ear speaker) is not in direct sunlight, then it doesn't keep the brightness for video. Your screen shot isn't visible though I went the rounds thinking it was a Hulu bug for a long time before I realized it happens in ask video players and isn't constant.

[Q]Screen changes in daylight

Does anyone know how to turn off that feature where the screen instead of being black becomes kinda gray?
It happens in the sun for example, to increase outdoor visibility, but I don't like it:/
I can't find anything in the settings regarding that feature.

Not sure exactly what you're talking about, but my first guess would be to try and turn off auto brightness, see if that helps. It doesn't work very well anyway.

It happens with or without auto brightness.
I work outside so I notice it more. Sometimes screen decides to make the colours more dull which kinda helps viewing it outside. It happens automatically when its bright, but I would like to control it.

Nah, checked that.
I would show you what I mean, but screenshots won't work.
Its a bit annoying, but I can live with it.
I had a similar setting in first Huawei ascend mate, but I could turn it on and off.
Unfortunately, I cant do it on mate 7...
I know what you are talking about. But can't find an option to turn it on/off either.

anyone got such screen brightness problem on mix2s?

I just received my mix2s last weekend, and I have been using it for several days.
But through these days, I find it that when you turned off the automatic brightness, and the phone is displaying some dark or black contents, the brightness will get lower by itself, but when you turn to some colorful or brighter contents, the btightness will get back to normal itself.
so I'm wondering is there anyone got the same problem like me? and how can I turn it off? I mean, just don't turn down the brightness itself when showing dark contents.
Just checked it on my phone and you are right, screen becomes darker when you display dark content. Also with auto brightness disabled. Maybe it has something to do with the automatic contrast settings
Edit: I was right, if you disable automatic contrast the brightness stays like you set it

can you tell me where is the "automatic contrast" settings? seems that miui just deleted it
It seems to be a problem since the last mix 2. you can try search on google and on this forum.
There are few fixes you can do, just go over the search. I didn't do it myself because I just manually adjust the brightness myself. It is pretty annoying though.

Thank you I could not figure out what was causing this on my phone. When watching Youtube on lowest brightness at night the screen would fluctuate and it drives me crazy. Did not know that had something to do with it but now I know.
This is an old thread, but it's high on Google rankings, so I'm adding to it.
I think my main annoyance with this is the position of the sensor. If I'm typing or scrolling with my thumb, it seems I'm covering the sensor with my hand, so it thinks it's gone dark, so decreases brightness.
Disabling the auto brightness fixed it for me

[Official Pie] Auto Brightness

Hi all.
Is it me or the auto brightness of Pie works way worse compared to Oreo' one?
Too much bright inside, too much dark outside.
Just my impressions. Your thoughts?
Hints / Suggestions?

Definately worse that Oreo. The pie stable was just a rushed update
For me, the auto brightness initially was working on the extreme ends on pie, but after constantly adjusting it to suit my needs, adaptive brightness has worked it's magic and now for me works exactly as I'd want it to work.

Do you mean it is an official documented / mentioned feature the fact that leaving adaptive brightness on and still manually correct it, will lead in time to system recognizing your needs and slowly adjust accordingly?
Or is it something we're just guessing?

It is something that I have experienced after the update to pie.
The Pie update is just a friggin mess. Horrible brightness, time zone changing, bank apps not working, future alarm notifications, awful interface with the info cards and pull down menu notifications, websites loading strange, developer options nested in another settings menu, less options in the settings area, phone dialer button is green... I rolled back to 5.1.11 because of all the hassle.
And yes, I have bug reports and yes, I even tried it with a full wipe and fresh flash of 9.0. Between Google's design choices and the bugs, Pie is awful.
It has always been really bad for me.... Too dark all the time.... it doesn't really respond accurately and fast enough....

Go and read about it, ask google. I think now its called adaptive auto brightbess or smntg like that, just use it adjusting just will help it for auto feature to give the best screen brightness. Not everyone sees the same in the same light conditions. So this new adaptive brightness in pie is aiming to that. By adjusting it to your needs how u see it better in different light conditions it just helps phone to learn about everyones different vision/seeing levels.
But it just my opinionl

I have read about it and apparently it's a WIP. Doesn't make sense to put a WIP feature in a stable build. Don't get me wrong I love the OP6 and the pie release is ok but it was very much rushed out. They should have taken there time and released a pie build that was perfect. Beta builds should be used to make changes and fixes.
