Brightness widget

Anyone know of a brightness widget that will toggle between "Low" and "High" brightness, but also toggle back to the automatic brightness?
Most of the time i wanna use auto brightness, but when i want to change to high or low/off I dont like to have to go into the settings menu every time to change it.
Most of the widgets ive found have only gone through low, med, high, but no way to go to auto.

Check out the Android Power Control widget. It does exactly as you describe - but has the other power options on there too. I use it all the time.

that goes to auto? i tried it and thought it just went off, med, high...guess i'll try again

I just tested it out, and to the best of my knowledge, it seems that it does just do "off" "low" and "high/full" brightness. I tested this by looking in the settings under brightness after each click, and "auto" is never checked, the slider just goes up and down depending on which click its on.
someone please illuminate (no pun intended) this for me if you can...

It does exactly what you need:
press once and brightness is off
Press second time and brightness in on auto
press third time and brightness in on highest
But maybe somebody knows if it is possible:
press once brightness in on auto
press second time and brightness is off

I was wrong, in power manager you can set birghtnees eather to auto, low or high!
So gbenj was right.

It does everything I want it to plus some more, except GPS. If it had GPS it would be the #1 app, until then it can sit at #2

Check out SwitchPro Widget.. does seven icons in a row and lets u toggle all sorts of stuff like Wifi, GPS, Bluetooth, Sync, Airplane mode, Vibrate and of course brightness too. and it does lo, high and auto brightness.. Looks good too with a transparent background option..

FroYo does this by default now.

do you use auto-brightness or manual?

I have been using auto-brightness, but I feel that it is usually brighter than necessary. I'm trying to get better battery life ( get a day just fine as is using the phone quite a bit) but I'm going to experiment with manual brightness to see how much life I can save. What do you use? How has it affected your battery life?

I use auto brightness too, but have been thinking about using manual brightness with the screen always #1 in my battery history (consistently 60-70% battery use).
It seems like the only people able to get the screen out of the number one slot for battery history are those setting screen brightness manually. Can anyone confirm this?

I use auto brightness and it seems to do fine. I will agree with you that it does seem a bit bright in some situations though. I can get a day's worth of battery out of it with auto brightness, and wifi on (never sleep policy).
I need to do a bit more testing without wifi, but I don't see why it wouldn't be that much different (I could be wrong though)

It sucks that auto-brightness can't be adjusted at all. On the iphone you could "weight" auto-brightness to lower or higher settings. It worked great because you could still use auto brightness, but keep the screen a little dimmer to save power.

He's referring to whether or not your Wifi chip will go into sleep mode when the screen is off. By default your wifi will go into sleep mode when the screen is off.
To change the setting navigate to settings -> wireless and network -> wi-fi settings -> tap the menu button and select advanced which has an option for wi-fi sleep policy that had been defaulted to sleep "when screen turns off". There you have the option to change it to "never" or "never when plugged in".

What is the advantage to keeping wifi on?

Some people only have the 200MB data plan like me.
I also use google voice for my text messages because it is free. Has worked like a charm!

I used autobrightness for a few days, but then I found out that you can adjust the brightness just by sliding along the notification bar. I never went back.

Wi-fi uses less battery power, and is faster than 3G in most cases.

I use Manual brightness and i Have the power widget loaded which gives you a 3 position brightness toggle - low medium high, just in case i want to change.

Try sliding your finger horizontally over the top bar. Samsung made it so that it acts as a brightness slider.

Yep I use the notification bar swipe method. Works great.

That's brilliant (pun intended)! Thank you for letting me know about that. I was using auto, but I'm going to try this now.

So if your using manual do you use the power saving option? I feel this is the same as auto bright ness.

How to adjust the brightness other than the default range?

I found the captivate drain battery too fast, even at the lowest brightness the phone gives. So I am thinking about maybe we could further turn down the brightness of the screen, this might save a lot battery.
But how??

I noticed that from JF6 to JH7, the brightness went down one tick lower. When I had stock JF6 set to manual brightness, I used to not have a hard time reading the contents on the display while the phone is on my desk, set to the lowest setting. When I did the JH7 OTA update, I noticed that the lowest brightness setting (when set to manual) is even lower. It made it harder to read. Hope that answers your question on brightness settings. There is more on JH7 than just the brightness settings changes. Plus, there are other things you can do to save battery power than just adjusting the display brightness

When I go into Settings, About and battery use.
It show that the Display using about 60% of the power.

Everything is relative on that page. If all you do is turn on the screen and browse, the "Display" battery usage will be higher. If you're on the phone for an hour or so (which, by default, the display turns off) you'll see "Voice calls" number go up. Etc.

Basically it's saying, the time you've had your device unplugged, 60% of the battery usage has been due to the display. and 40% of it is among other things.

There's an app on the market called Dimmer that will knock the brightness down a bit from the lowest setting. There's a small window that pops up that says "changing brightness from XX to 10" where XX = 30 on the lowest setting via the default brightness settings.
This makes me suspect that the brightness could go even lower, though I don't if it would impact the performance of the screen, given the Super AMOLED tech.

This is normal..All this means is your display is using the most and you don't have any background programs eating the battery.It should always show this as the highest from what I've been told.
In settings you can can either use the automatic brightness setting..or not... it is in Sound and Display..scroll down to display settings and you will see Brightness...Screen Time Out...and Power Saving Mode . Click on Power Saving mode....if you see the green check mark there..you are unchecking it..then open the Brightness tab..click on automatic brightness adjustment if checked and do the same thing ..and then ok. Your screen will darken.. You can then install the power bar on one of your screens by touching a unpopulated area large enough to accept the power bar strip. You will then be able to adjust the brightness by tapping on it..as well as being able to turn on and off wi-fi..blue-tooth..satellite..sync..and lastly brightness.

Theres also an app called Screen Filter which does the same thing as you guys have been describing, except it has a slider you can use to set what you would like, I use it for reading in bed, and it works wonderfully.

RootDim (formerly known as ScreenDim) lets you set the screen brightness on backlit screens below what the OS normally allows, which is handy for amateur astronomy where the lowest normal OS backlight setting (even with a red nightmode) leaks enough through the black pixels to damage night vision. Moreover, SuperDim lets have several brightness profiles, and to include nightmode settings (enabled by ChainFire3D or Cyanogenmod's render fx) as part of the brightness profile.

I just uploaded version 1.10, which restores low brightness settings after the screen is turned off and back on (the OS normally was restoring its brighter screen).

I assume this is when you use the other lights option to toggle these lights, or when you restore a profile, right?
In version 1.11 (just uploaded), I no longer restore other lights when a profile is loaded--this should help with your problem, as long as you don't touch the other lights. Eventually, I may add an option to choose which lights get restored from a profile.

I originally made SuperDim for setting very low backlight settings on LCDs, and so I made it not work on non-LCD screens (e.g., OLED). But I've since realized that the profile feature might be useful for non-LCD users as well, so I've released version 1.20 that supports non-LCD screens. It's in Market. While I was at it, I cleaned up the code a little, made it more javaish (I'm new to java).

My MyTouch 4G just seems to turn the screen off totally if i go below 20 brightness, it dims but then shuts off.

Doesn't work at all with Dell Streak 5

Actually, all Screen Filter does is dim the colour of the pixels. This app actually modifies the screen backlight level. E.g. Screen Filter just makes the screen gray-er.
Also, works good on Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, but the backlight completly switches of when set to under 15.

Screen filter merely adds a black semi-transparent overlay across the screen, making it look dimmer.
This app adjusts the backlight, which means darker black levels on the screen.

Your eyes would probably care if you were doing amateur astronomy under a dark sky (which is the primary purpose for SuperDim). Screen Filter doesn't turn down the backlight, and on a lot of devices there is enough backlight leaking through even completely black pixels to damage night vision. You can try this experiment. Turn a backlit device to a completely black screen (maybe view a black jpg) and take it to a completely dark room. Let your eyes dark adapt. The "black" screen will in fact probably be quite grey. (If it's really black, that's probably because you have an OLED device.)
When I do amateur astronomy, I am not infrequently looking to see objects way dimmer than backlit black pixels.

I'd like to do something about the screen turning completely off issue.
To that end, I need people to do some experiments for me, and I will be very grateful (I'll also give a free full version of Force2SD as compensation for the first couple of experimenters, if you want it--just email me). The first experiment is this. Download SuperDim 1.22, now up in the Market. Press the menu key, and choose "Turn on safe mode" (you can tell safe mode is on, because next time you pull up the menu, it says "Turn off safe mode"). Now, turn brightness down to 10. Does your screen turn off?
I should warn that very low brightness levels can be very low indeed. For instance, if I am outdoors on a sunny day, I have trouble telling the difference between brightness 4 and off. So you need to be in a dark area--I recommend a room without windows and with the lights off.
If the screen does not turn off at 10, turn it down to 5, and then 1. Let me know if it ever turns off.
I am guessing that in safe mode, it doesn't turn off at all.
What safe mode does is it makes very low brightness settings not persist. So if you are in safe mode and leave SuperDim, you lose your low brightness setting.
I'd also appreciate it if people who can normally turn their brightness down to 1 could do some experiments with safe mode. Specifically, I'd like to know if moving the slider to 1 in safe mode has the same effect on screen brightness as moving the slider to 1 in non-safe mode has. (Again, if you're one of the first few experimenters and want a free copy of Force2SD, email me.)
On my Archos 43, brightness 1 is very, very dim, but the screen is still on. And I can't tell the difference between safe mode and non-safe mode, except that in safe mode, the settings don't persist after I leave SuperDim.

Tried this app on my desire HD.
Great idea, but when I reach 10 and below, the backlight doesn't get lower.
If I use the adb method (don't remember the command), I can set the backlight manually all the way down to 0.
There is no difference with or without safe mode on.

I agree, doesn't work with Desire HD/Inspire 4G, safe mode only dims the brightness but no lower than normal, and only dims the brightness on the screen, regardless of your settings

I found a bug. In fact, the bug is such that I have no idea how it was managing to work on my device at all! In any case, I think I fixed it. Try 1.23 (should be in Market or here) and see if it does the job. If not, I have some more ideas.

Tasker Guide to Auto Brightness

Follow this Guide at Your Own Risk.
I am not responsible for bricked devices, lost data, thermonuclear war or getting fired for missed alarm or whatever happens to your device by following my instructions​
I have been a long time Lux user. But what I found, that Lux is bugged with some compatibility checking wakelock. Also, Lux uses screen overlay which is a problem. For a lot of system features in Marshamllow loaded S7edge alerts that an screen overlay has been detected and this must be disabled. Therefore, I configured Tasker (Paid software available on android market), my most favourite automation tool for android. So, where is the catch?
Process:
1. Disable Auto Brightness and Create a New Task in Tasker.
2. Select Action Category > Display > Display Brightness
3. Then Set Brightness Level value at 15 (Or whatever lowest brightness you're comfortable at)
4. Below, set if parameter as "%LIGHT < 20 (Or whatever brightness level you want for 15% of brightness)
Repeat Process 2-4 to create multiple steps for your brightness level adjustments.
Now, in Tasker profiles, you add a new profile to be triggered by "Events > Display > Display On and assign the created Task.
You can also adjust your brightness on per app basis when you want a specific app to have a set brightness level by following the same process except when creating a profile you have to select "Applications" and assign the created Task or a similar task created separately.
Update:
I have attached a Tasker configuration xml to get started with.
Please note that this guide will setup auto brightness to be adjusted on device wake. You can hook this update to any event as you want.
Tested working on SM-G935FD. Should work on any Tasker compatible android device with Light Sensor.

+1.... I think that Android is great because of the customization option available, but sometimes people just over-customise.
There is nothing wrong with Auto-Brightness, and in case you have a problem with it, just override it using the bar on the notification panel.
Still, although I will never use it, this is a nice tutorial.

Default Auto brightness implemented in S7 edge is buggy. here on xda you can check it out.

I have been using (and many other people are) Lux to adjust the auto brightness behavior which polls sensor data at a specific period, whenever the screen is on. But if you use this guide, it will give you a auto brightness customization solution without polling light data from sensor all the time. even though the sensor will be on, it will not be active. I am not sure that it will impact on battery or not, but it gives me more control over the brightness adjustment.

Good point. Though I don't see the issue on my device, Auto-Brightness works as I expect it to. It gets very bright on sun, and dim on dark rooms (though I would like it to go a tiny bit dimmer to be perfect). Will this Task auto adjust or you need to select the desired brightness yourself?

According to http://www.greenbot.com/article/303...brightness-fixes-a-major-mobile-headache.html and this: http://www.displaymate.com/Galaxy_S7_ShootOut_1.htm you can customize according to your liking .. hadn't tried it though all I need is the AOD to shine a lil bit dimmer

The drawback to this is that it only adjusts brightness based on the level when you turn the screen on. If the ambient light changes, the screen brightness won't change with it.
