Google Voice? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Has anybody here managed to get Google Voice working w/ this phone? I keep getting error messages when using the app to change my voicemail over, and the same goes if I do it manually using the *004* method

Have you actually tested it? I have it working on the original GS2 and I believe I got error messages too. When I attempted to change it in the settings, it always said the change was unsuccessful, but in actuality, it was working. I would place a test call to see it is activated. If not, try setting the voicemail back to default, then clearing data of the application (Google Voice - found in settings - applications - manage applications), and start over. You can also peruse the troubleshooting guides that Google likely provides somewhere.

@Cobalt which carrier are you with?

I figured out my problem. Bad SIM card. Voice worked, data worked, but anything involving network requests (MMI codes) didn't. Got AT&T to give me a new one. Works like a charm now.

I'm having a problem setting up my google voice number on my new Skyrocket too... Unfortunately I don't believe it's related to my SIM card as I swapped SIM's with the one from my Nexus One (which GV works fine with) and I get the same error.
When I try to configure GV and it tries to switch the voicemail service from "my carrier" to "google voice", it gets an error saying "change to new provider?" If I select yes, then I get another error that says "forwarding number change failed". The phone rings fine with I dial my GV number indicating the forwarding at GV is working fine, but if I dial out from my phone, it shows my phones number instead of the GV number meaning something in the phone isn't being configured right.
I searched on the issue and find this thread at the google voice help forum, so I know it's not just me but I can't seem to get it to work no matter what I do.

I changed my settings manually. menu>settings>call>call forwarding then edit the numbers to your gv number. This worked for me. Take note of the vm number that's in there in case this method doesn't work for you.

That works fine for the incoming voicemail, but the outgoing calls still show up on the receiving phone as my cell phone's number instead of my google voice number.

Sorry about that.

Do your outgoing calls show up as from you GV number?

Nope, but I don't want them to either. I just use GV for the visual voicemail.

I'm curious, is anyone else out there sharing my issue with the outgoing phone number?

Nobody? I can't believe there aren't any other Google Voice users out there with the Skyrocket!

I'm sure you have, but just to rule out possibilities, is the option to use 'Google voice to make all calls' checked?

No problem with mine. Calling and text works fine, incoming and outgoing. Didn't set it up for voicemail though.

Actually no, but I'm 99% sure it wasn't on my previous Nexus One either, yet it still called out from my GV number. I've tried it though and it didn't help. Thanks for the thought.

Just to be clear, so when you dial someone else, their caller ID shows your GV number, NOT your cell phone number?

That is pretty odd. And you haven't modified your phone at all?

I tried installing GV stock, and also on the SkyROCKeteer ROM and get the same problem on both (as described in post 5). Get errors on installation, but incoming calls work fine and voicemails go to the GV app. But outgoing calls get received as from my cell number instead of as from my GV number.

I guess I was more asking where it's at now, if it's on stock or not. I regularly say things worded completely wrong.
Do you have visual voicemail setup? I've wondered with it being introduced with this phone if there'd be any conflicts.
So two questions to everyone, if you have the google voice app working, do you or don't you have visual voicemail? And did you have any issue getting outgoing calls to reflect your Google voice number?

At the moment I'm running the SkySTOCKeteer rom, but I installed GV bone stock within a few minutes of getting the phone and got the same errors.
No, I've never tried the visual voicemail app. I'll try freezing it with Ti Backup and see if that helps.
I've yet to see anyone claim it's fully working (including outgoing caller ID) on the skyrocket.

I'm 99% sure it was. That's the way it works. I too have a Nexus One and it works that way. If you don't have either "Ask every time I make a call" or Use Google Voice to make all calls", it won't work. Simple as that.

Switching yesterday to android was a shock when I found out there was no visual voicemail for android on AT&T. Dialing in for voicemail seems archaic now. But google voice can easily take over your AT&T voicemail and much much more. You don't even have to use your google voice phone number to use the voicemail feature.

True, I didnt even think about that. I dont even know how to dial in for voicemail on AT&T. The entire time on AT&T I had an iphone that did all that stuff automatically.
Google voicemail transcribes which is even more awesome
Google Voice is great if you don't use Google Apps, if you use a Google Apps account it won't work with it, which is really a pain. I don't want to maintain two separate Google accounts

How do you set up google voice to be your voicemail application, even if someone calls your regular phone number, not your google voice number?
Basics: Adding Google voicemail to your current mobile forwarding phoneShare Comment Print
If you're using a Google number, you can still set up Google voicemail with any mobile forwarding phone.
To do this, click Settings at the top right of the page. On the Phones tab, click the Add Google voicemail to this phone link to get started. The mobile carrier for your forwarding phone will need to be one of our current supported carriers.

I found youmail (sorry due to the rule about new account I can't post the link, but I'm sure you will be able to find it) witch work perfectly with Android. It's free and has a lot of great options
personally my last smartphone was a blackberry 8100 and then 8110 without internet so i think im going to be fine
Has anyone successfully downloaded the Google Voice App? I have tried several times and continue to get a 'download successful' message.

Did this earlier in the week. Here's what I did.
Install Google voice as you normally would but don't do any of the app's set up for voicemail use..it wont work. Go to settings>call settings>voice calls>call forwarding.
Leave the first option...think its Always Forward...as disabled but the final three options where the calls get forwarded to your AT&T voicemail...edit those so the number is your GV number. That should take care of it.
Be sure to write down your AT&T voicemail number just in case you want to change it back.

This worked. Am I charged minutes for calls getting forwarded to this number?'
Additionally, when I make google voice calls, can I add my GV number to alist for free calls?

As far as the A List goes...I have no idea.

Actually, you do use your minutes when you forward a call to your google voice voicemail. I know this from looking at my bill. I don't know about the a-list feature though, I've never used it.

Really? Wow. That's unnecessary. Oh well. Not like I don't answer my phone anyway so oh well.
I wonder if adding the google voice number to the a-list will allow free call forwarding....
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
A-List essentially is a list of numbers that you have unlimited calls to and from. When I was on my iphone you initiated GV calls by getting a call sent to you with your caller ID, so I would add that number to my a-list and voila, free calls.
not sure how it works with the app though.
Edit: looks like every time you dial out of GV it uses a different 10 digit number so you cant abuse a-list...shameful! Wonder i theres a way to force it to use a specific number
Good news you can roll back your version of GV and have it use the same number everytime when you try to connect a call.

Can't receive incoming calls?? Possibly caused by Google Voice?

I had installed Google Voice and my phone and I never had a problem with it.
I went into USCC and they said that they didnt know how to fix the problem.
I can't figure out how to contact Google. I don't know even know if its on their part.
Sooo
All I know is that I can't receive incoming calls anymore.
Any help?
While there *is* an in-coming calls issue USCC is aware of, my understanding is that it's intermittent, and you should certainly receive at least *some* phone calls.
I'd start with uninstalling google voice, if it will let you. If that didn't work, I'd probably get Titanium Backup, backup all my stuff, and flash back to stock 2.2 (or if you're running an AOSP-based ROM, reflash that), if it were my phone. Or, if you have a Nandroid backup from just prior to installing Google Voice, I'd restore from that.
I just had the same problem, my account was set to immediately forward. To fix it just dial *710, that is all he had me do and it cleared up right away.

Thank you. Incoming calls are now receivable.
No problem, glad I could help.
The app sets up your voicemail forward wrong. It is supposed to be *740000000 where the 0's are your 10 digit Google number. It dials *71 instead which forwards all calls, not just no answer calls.
*71(10 digit number) - forward all calls
*710 cancel
*74(10 digit number) - forward no answer calls
*740 cancel

I talked to a US Cellular technical agent for a while and she was willing to work with me to test a few ideas out while I had her resources available.
The Google Voice app adds in "Google Voice" as a Carrier under "Call Settings" for voicemail. I only had this problem while running the ED01 Fascinate's Community ROM V1.3 so I do not know if this is a problem on USCC ROMs.
But it took her taking my phone off the towers, and re adding it for incoming calls to work again. The trick to using Google Voice on USCC phone is dialing
*74 + 10 digit google voice number
As a previous member stated.

Can't get rid of Google Voice

When I receive a call, it rings for about half a second and I can't answer it. It goes to my GV voicemail. I can't answer the call.
I thought, man if GV is this buggy I'm going to just use the T-Mo voicemail service. So in Call Settings I switched back to my carrier. But still, when I call my phone, it rings for half a second, then goes to GV voicemail. WTF.
So I went to GV settings and found my forwarding phone in the Phones tab and I clicked on "Deactivate GV on my phone." It said I had to go to my phone and type ##004#. So I did that and nothing happened. Still same problems.
This is really annoying because a) I can't answer my calls, b) I don't get any missed call notifications.
Can anyone help me?

[Q] Activating GVoice on VZW SGS3

I did a search but cant seem to find how to activate Google Voice on my VZW GS3. Im trying to set it up but it says that VZW doesnt support this feature. So I followed the GV support page where it says to dial codes to activate, and one of them takes me to VZW where it says I cant do it. Yet I see people on here using GV. Am I doing something wrong? I am running CleanROM 2.5. Thanks for any help in advance.
Edit: Still have been trying to figure it out and neither of my VM are working now, Stock VZW not GVoice....

Hi,
This is pretty simple. Just log into gvoice in your browser (http://www.google.com/voice) and go settings. Under phone where you setup your number to be forwarded, should show use this as your main voice mail. Follow its steps.

Gvoice, but I would like it to be easy to switch back if I wanted to. Right now neither VM is picking up if I ignore a call. I can call my gvoice number and it will work, but when someone calls nothing is working.
You called the number gvoice tells you to dial to make gvoice your default VM?
Will not work unless you do so.
*71(your gvoice #)
if you did this already, deactivate it *73 and try it over again. *71(your gvoice #)
That is what you have to do to switch between them.

i've just done it 4 times back to back to see if it still worked on the s3 and it does.....just making sure (please don't make any assumptions about what i'm about to type up, it's just to make sure its being done lol) that when you input the # to dial, you include the asterisk before 71 and that you're using the full 10 digit phone number for your google voice number, like for me its *713379449734 to enable, then *73 to disable......it has worked across an incredible 2, droid 3, and now galaxy s3

But the voicemail aspect is working now. Im trying to figure out how to make calls through my GV number. when I enter google.com/voice on my phone it says we to to learn this number... Please verify using a desktop. Amd to add it. When I go to settings its already listed as a registered phone. Whats that about?

Calling with Google voice broken after update

Hi all
Since the update, I have had some problems with making calls with my Google voice number on my idol 3. Everything worked perfect up until the last week.
I have it set to have all calls using GV and also tried to set it to ask for each call. I've tried uninstalling, clear cache, etc but no change. Either way, the calls go through but the person I'm calling sees my carrier number (which no one knows), meaning that the calls are going through the carrier line instead of GV.
Anyone else experiencing this? Any suggestions for getting GV working properly again? I've not had a problem like this with GV on any phones/versions before
Thanks!

Seems third party dialers aren't working as expected either. Thought I would try another dialer to see if that would work around this but that is just opening the stock dialer...
Anyone know if a reset of the phone will roll back the update?

I'm having the same problem. I can even set google voice to ask each time and I get prompted to use voice or the phone but it doesn't matter what I select. All calls go through the phone instead of voice.
Similar issue, though I can get my GV number to work if I dial with Hangouts Dialer.
Yeah, mine works if I use Hangouts dialer also.... But that uses data, not minutes. I happen to be on an unlimited data plan, so should be OK for me for now.

Depending on your rom version the system image thread has several "early" firmware versions now (especially for the 6045i) where you can see if it reverts the issue.

While that does work (and is good enough for me personally), the problem with that is that it uses data instead of cellular minutes. So anyone who makes enough outgoing calls and doesn't have a lot of data in their cell plan may end up going over their limit.
