I did a search but cant seem to find how to activate Google Voice on my VZW GS3. Im trying to set it up but it says that VZW doesnt support this feature. So I followed the GV support page where it says to dial codes to activate, and one of them takes me to VZW where it says I cant do it. Yet I see people on here using GV. Am I doing something wrong? I am running CleanROM 2.5. Thanks for any help in advance.
Edit: Still have been trying to figure it out and neither of my VM are working now, Stock VZW not GVoice....

Suggestions anyone? I would appreciate the help.
I'm just using Google Voice Lite, but on my previous phone I had to setup forwarding at VZW for unanswered calls to go to the GV voicemail. When I got this phone, it just worked after I downloaded the GV app.

Hi,
This is pretty simple. Just log into gvoice in your browser (http://www.google.com/voice) and go settings. Under phone where you setup your number to be forwarded, should show use this as your main voice mail. Follow its steps.

I can access the vm from my phone as if I were checking it. But when someone calls me it say the call couldnt be completed as dialed when it time for vm to come up.
Your wanting Gvoice to be your VM or VZW to be your VM?

Gvoice, but I would like it to be easy to switch back if I wanted to. Right now neither VM is picking up if I ignore a call. I can call my gvoice number and it will work, but when someone calls nothing is working.
You called the number gvoice tells you to dial to make gvoice your default VM?
Will not work unless you do so.
*71(your gvoice #)
if you did this already, deactivate it *73 and try it over again. *71(your gvoice #)
That is what you have to do to switch between them.

Yes ive done this, It didnt work... I get "Welcome to Verizon Wireless, you call could not be completed as dialed. Blah, blah, blah. Your verizon update could not be completed" when i do the *73
And when I do the *71 I get 3 short busy tones and it hangs up.
When someone calls me and I reject it, The incoming call hears "Your call could not be completed as dialed"
I think ive tried all the proper steps, but feel like im missing something. Please keep the suggestions coming, they are very appreciated
Does anyone have any other suggestions. Thabks again in advance

i've just done it 4 times back to back to see if it still worked on the s3 and it does.....just making sure (please don't make any assumptions about what i'm about to type up, it's just to make sure its being done lol) that when you input the # to dial, you include the asterisk before 71 and that you're using the full 10 digit phone number for your google voice number, like for me its *713379449734 to enable, then *73 to disable......it has worked across an incredible 2, droid 3, and now galaxy s3
Yes ive done it multiple times. Like i said when i do the *71 i get a quick busy signal then it hangs up. Ive been all over the place looking around and now neither vm's are working. I only wanted this for the visual vm aspect of it. I believe that its working. Im sure its me doing something wrong. I have setup it up and activated online, it shows my number and carrier, i can call out via pc, when i push and hold 1 it takes me to enter my pin. It just wont answer when there is an incoming call

Ok so I finally got it working. I deactivated then re-activated, but during the Re-activation it had me put in the *71 + a slightly different number than my GV number. But the voicemail aspect is working now. Im trying to figure out how to make calls through my GV number. when I enter google.com/voice on my phone it says we to to learn this number... Please verify using a desktop. Amd to add it. When I go to settings its already listed as a registered phone. Whats that about?

Not sure if this was already posted, but no more relying on SMS for syncing!!!
Until I can see confirmation that this is effective and is not going to drain my battery, I'm staying put with the workaround which works great and works in seconds.
I have not used Google Voice a ton, but the new version seems to be tons slower at notifications. Today they took about about an hour to come.
Hell yeah! :d:d:d
anyone notice that when you call out use GV, it still displays your regular cell phone number rather than your GV number to the person you call. is there a way to fix this?

if you got the GV app and you're using it "for all calls" it should display your gv number...
PS the delay is about AT MOST 1-2 minutes on my hero... (side by side with internet inbox i mean) still better than AT LEAST 5minutes

Can anyone confirm the new versions notifications does work correctly????
Does anyone know how to set Hero 2.1 to have to auto forward to GV so I can use that for my voicemail instead of Sprint? In fact does anyone know where the call forwarding is?

Running on a 1.5 ROM (TTG), the notifications in the new version do in fact work properly, and instantly. Woohoo, finally! In fact, while I was cleaning up old 'unread' messages via my PC, my phone was going 'ding' every time I deleted one and the 'new message' notification count changed.

When you are activating the feature on Google, as per instructions here at https://www.google.com/voice/sprint I believe they actually show you the code, *28XXXXXXXXXX, to punch in. Looking around now, I had to search a bit to find it, as I couldn't remember from doing it myself. Anyways, that is it, *28[Your GV Number], and then *38 if you ever want to turn it off.
I was using the SMS workaround. Just disabled SMS to my phone and left a test message.
I received notification on my phone within a minute.
Now, does it drain the battery? I wouldn't think it would as it is push and not a pull.
Oh, and the LED works.

*28 and *38 don't work for me, but the following do:
Call Forwarding - Unconditional = *72(number), *720 to turn off
Call Forwarding - No Answer = *73(number), *730 to turn off
Call Forwarding - Busy = *74(number), *740 to turn off

Fair enough. All the same, *28 is the official code for covering both conditions that normally required *73 and *74. It worked fine for me, and is well documented. Not sure why it wouldn't work for others, but I am no telco expert.
Also, for anyone who was wondering, yes they still charge for *72 (unconditional).

First question: Yes, it does. I dug around a bit for come clarification and found this.
See comment from that article:
One is for CFB, the other for CFNA. *28 does both CFB and CFNA in one shot.

Second question: Not sure how *28 has affected call waiting specifically, but I can tell you that I hate trying to answer a second call in general since I started using GV. It's been a while since I bothered to try, in fact. I remember a few times pressing 'Answer' only to then have a GV voice prompt ask if I wanted to answer the second call or 'add it' to the existing call, and by the time it asks, the 2nd caller is gone and I am lucky to get back to the first. I got frustrated and stopped answering second incoming calls as there is rarely anyone I want to talk to that badly (including clients).
I doubt that my call waiting rant is helpful, but I had to get it off my chest. Whew!

Thanks for the info. I use call waiting a good bit. I often put my kids on hold when a business call comes in, so I'll stick with *73, but just for grins I'm gonna call Sprint and complain that my *28 isn't working.
Does anyone know if it is possible to have two different voicemail messages based on the number the other person dials? I know I can set up different messages for different groups, but I want one message for people who dial my cell # and one message for people who dial my GV#.
I was trying to set up Google Voice on CM6 to check my voicemail, but when setting it up there was an error saying that my carrier didn't allow this, or something along those lines. How do I fix this?
Thanks.
Once you sign into Google voice, you can then go into call settings and set it. If you've never used Google voice, go on the web version and activate your phone.

Yeh, same here. But it doesn't go to voicemail when I call my phone.
its working fine for me on sprint i just had to do the *28 stuff
I remember when I set up my GV, the *28<number> did not work either. Came across another thread somewhere that suggested a different * number, I want to say it was something like *73 or *78? I did that, and GV works fine now, calls come in, then bounce over to GV after about 6-8 rings.
Another guy having a simmilar problem just requested a different google voice number, and did the usual setup. You could try that if your GV # isn't known to anyone anyway.

I had this problem after the most recent update. I tried everything. Finally someone told me to go into the web page of Gvoice and go to voice settings...and change your number. I changed my number, and then reset everything up and now it works perfectly. Hope that helps!
EDIT: Woops. Didn't read the posts above mine. Sorry!
When I receive a call, it rings for about half a second and I can't answer it. It goes to my GV voicemail. I can't answer the call.
I thought, man if GV is this buggy I'm going to just use the T-Mo voicemail service. So in Call Settings I switched back to my carrier. But still, when I call my phone, it rings for half a second, then goes to GV voicemail. WTF.
So I went to GV settings and found my forwarding phone in the Phones tab and I clicked on "Deactivate GV on my phone." It said I had to go to my phone and type ##004#. So I did that and nothing happened. Still same problems.
This is really annoying because a) I can't answer my calls, b) I don't get any missed call notifications.
Can anyone help me?

All I want GV to do with my mobile number is forward calls from my GV number.
Easy answer. Your sprint number takes over your google voice number.
Check out here how to fix that

I posted the last post which is the easiest way to do it.

Have you tried to change your settings via the web. Going to your Google voice account and change your voicemail options. Although it sounds like you need to change your cm forwarding on your phone. Go to T-Mobiles site for instructions or call T-Mobile.

Have you actually tested it? I have it working on the original GS2 and I believe I got error messages too. When I attempted to change it in the settings, it always said the change was unsuccessful, but in actuality, it was working. I would place a test call to see it is activated. If not, try setting the voicemail back to default, then clearing data of the application (Google Voice - found in settings - applications - manage applications), and start over. You can also peruse the troubleshooting guides that Google likely provides somewhere.
@Cobalt which carrier are you with?
I figured out my problem. Bad SIM card. Voice worked, data worked, but anything involving network requests (MMI codes) didn't. Got AT&T to give me a new one. Works like a charm now.
I'm having a problem setting up my google voice number on my new Skyrocket too... Unfortunately I don't believe it's related to my SIM card as I swapped SIM's with the one from my Nexus One (which GV works fine with) and I get the same error.
When I try to configure GV and it tries to switch the voicemail service from "my carrier" to "google voice", it gets an error saying "change to new provider?" If I select yes, then I get another error that says "forwarding number change failed". The phone rings fine with I dial my GV number indicating the forwarding at GV is working fine, but if I dial out from my phone, it shows my phones number instead of the GV number meaning something in the phone isn't being configured right.
I searched on the issue and find this thread at the google voice help forum, so I know it's not just me but I can't seem to get it to work no matter what I do.
I changed my settings manually. menu>settings>call>call forwarding then edit the numbers to your gv number. This worked for me. Take note of the vm number that's in there in case this method doesn't work for you.
That works fine for the incoming voicemail, but the outgoing calls still show up on the receiving phone as my cell phone's number instead of my google voice number.

I tried installing GV stock, and also on the SkyROCKeteer ROM and get the same problem on both (as described in post 5). Get errors on installation, but incoming calls work fine and voicemails go to the GV app. But outgoing calls get received as from my cell number instead of as from my GV number.
I guess I was more asking where it's at now, if it's on stock or not. I regularly say things worded completely wrong.
Do you have visual voicemail setup? I've wondered with it being introduced with this phone if there'd be any conflicts.
So two questions to everyone, if you have the google voice app working, do you or don't you have visual voicemail? And did you have any issue getting outgoing calls to reflect your Google voice number?

I'm 99% sure it was. That's the way it works. I too have a Nexus One and it works that way. If you don't have either "Ask every time I make a call" or Use Google Voice to make all calls", it won't work. Simple as that.
Alright, a search didn't turn anything up, so I'm going to ask and risk wrath.
I d/l and installed GSLEON3's VVM apk thinking that since I came from an iphone, I might be able to take advantage. So, my questions are: Has anyone checked into VVM for the Inspire? Can I swap my SIM back into the iPhone to get VVM reprovisioned on the line and then use the app I have?
I should probably leave well enough alone, but running a rooted phone indicates that I don't have that kind of sense.

in call settings change your voicemail service to google voice. then in voicemail settings change the number to your gvoice number. mine did it all when i installed gvoice.
Well, I set this up, as I had a GV# already. My only complaint is that an incoming call rings nine times before going to voicemail. the problem is that it rings to AT&T (4-5 rings) then still has to fulfill GV's requisite 30 seconds of ringing before being picked up. Anyone know a workaround to that?!
 Nevermind. I had it set to ring my Google Chat (so I could use GrooVeIP). Unchecked all forwarding numbers and it now goes straight to the outgoing message.
