I am confused with restoring process.
Some where i read, after flashing new updated rom, just restore the previously backed up data from nandroid back up. (to retain the apps).
Similarly same procedure i read for restoring previuos ROM.
So restoring from nandroid back up, will it restore the ROM, or only APPS.
If it restores only ROM, what I should do to restore apps?
I tried titanium backup last time, but I lost all titanium backup data after flashing new ROM, so i did all setups again. please advice.

If you do it correctly, I believe a nandroid restores the Rom AND apps/placement of them, so I'm not sure if that's what you want. Just get into CWM and use the backup option to back up your current rom. Whenever I flash back to stock, I restore a rooted, CWM enabled version of stock, etc. then flash another rom from there. I've also restored S7 from red CWM .
I do know that you should restore from the same color CWM or it won't work right. (atleast in my experience it hasn't) I would also use TiBu to backup your apps just in case(when you restore them "missing apps with data" is the option you use)

Thanks for your response..
main thing i want to do is, currently i am on cm7, there is latest update on the rom, so i want to update it, but i am confused how to restore the apps? is it titanium back up or nandoid backup.
I think nandroid back up is to restore the ROM, and titanium is to restore apps alone.
Am I correct?

I am on CM7, yesterday i saw a latest update, so I backed up everythign using titanium backup. and flashed the latest update.
My screen settings were same as earlier. I placed my apps in particular order, nothing is changed, but none of the apps worked. when i click on gmail app, it closed automatically, without any error message. I tried few other apps also.
Finally i tried titanium backup, but nothing happen. even after 15 mins, titanium backup says 0%. so finally i restored from my backup.

Yesterday when I tried, I did Backup all user apps + system data, and after updating new ROM, I clicked on Restore missing apps + all system data.
But it was at 0% after 15 mins.
My doubt is: when I updated the ROM, why I have all my previous screen with apps intact? is that normal?
I tried again. again restoring stopped @ 0%.

Ok, I flashed Nothrillrs A700 build for the A510. It is fast and high sensitivity, but has got some problems.
I now want to go back to my stock Acer ROM...how can I do this? My build previously was _A510_1.073.00_WW_GEN1
Also, once I go back, what will I lose? I.e., unlocked bootloader, root, cwm. Can I OTA after flashing back to stock?
Any and all help will be welcome!

You surely did a nandroid backup before flashing the new rom? Easiest way to go back is to restore your old rom (boot into CWM recovery, select restore and chose the image you made before flashing the new rom). You won't loose anything as the restore process just re-creates your system to the point where you made the backup.

Ok, but the image size is just about 12 MB. The ROM I flashed was about 300MB. Will this restore all my apps too?
Thank God I did the nandroid backup. Everything back to normal. I never knew this was possible. How come the recovery saved on my ext SD card is only 12 MB in size, but this can restore every single detail of my system as per normal?
One problem: it says system updater failed. Does this mean I won't be able to get anymore updates again? Any idea why?
Update: I can't get refunds from Google Play anymore, within the 15 mins period after flashing this ROM, and even after returning to my previous nandroid restore. Any way to fix it?

Perhaps you ask too many refunds? I've heard of accounts being flagged to prevent piracy (it's easy to buy an app, copy it, refund it, etc.) for too many refunds.
It's not because of my ROM as refunding works fine when using my ROMs. You can even backup/restore to your Google account when switching between ROMs, so Google doesn't see them as 'unofficial'.

I thought the same. So I created a brand new Google account, logged in to Play store....and I still can't refund apps! Actually, the refund option is there, but not for 15 minutes. The moment I exit Google Play after downloading the app, the refund option will disappear. Before that I can still see it as long as I returned to the app page in 15 minutes.
I strongly suspect is your ROM. Can anyone else please verify?
UPDATE: Ok, can you try getting an app (just a cheap one will do), and then use it, do other things like run the web browser/play a game and then go back to Google Play and get a refund after 5 minutes. I believe with the A700 Franken ROM for A510, this will not be possible.
It's not my ROM, I've tested this before, but fine:

Google Play page of the app and purchasing
Purchased and installing
Started the app, then went back to Google Play after a few minutes
Refunded
Like I said before, it has nothing to do with my ROM, or any other custom ROM for that matter. It most likely has to do with the fact that you, as you said yourself, refund alot of apps. There's a reason Google brought the timeframe back from 24 hours to 15 minutes, they are trying to prevent piracy and I'd be suspicious too if someone refunds quite alot. Especially since most of the apps out there offer free versions you can try before purchasing the full version.
But, all that's just my thoughts, and I am not Google. Therefor I'd suggest contacting Google to see what's up.
Hi,
Recently I flashed my first custom ROM Andromadus build 13 after taking a full nandroid backup.
Though the ROM is awesome! But I was unable to restore my messages using Titanium Backup Pro's extract/restore from nandroid feature.
So, I downloaded "AppExtractor" from play store and restore using that. The app asked me to reboot for changes to appear
..but as I rebooted my messaging app is force closing.

>> I tried to reboot my phone..that too din't helped.

nvm am on to re-flash it again..
"com.android.phone" just stopped working
But I do need to restore em..what I could see from my full nandroid backup (done on stock 2.3.3) in Ti on Andromadus was these few occurrences of "messaging/message" in the list:
..
MesasgingCS
Messaging
..
..
Phone&MessageStorage
..
Is there any way through which I can extract/recover those directly on my PC only? I don't mind getting my messages back in raw form..just need them :|
Re: Restoring Messages from Nandroid Backup Causes System Messaging App to Force Clos
Try using SMS Backup and Restore from the Play Store. I've been using it from rom to rom, and hasn't failed me yet; I flash new roms quite often.
It won't be done on the pc though, and you'll need to restore your nandroid to make a backup of your messages too.

It's only to make the backup of your messages. It's not that difficult.
1) Install abovementioned app from Play Store
2) Make nandroid of current rom
3) Restore nandroid of previous rom with messages
4) Install app from Play Store
5) Make backup of all messages
6) Reboot into recovery, restore nandroid of current rom
7) Restore messages from the app
8) PROFIT!
It should take about 15 minutes, if not less, and you won't have any errors restoring messages from the app.
Lazy me
Though..thanks for summing it up nicely

Hello, I am quite new to the android scene as I have been an iOS user for quite a few years (No judging please )
Basically, I have DroidKang v10 as my ROM on my phone, and i am trying to switch to cataclysm, or in fact any other ROM, but everytime I change ROM and restore my DATA ONLY backup, I keep getting the "unfortunately com.android.phone has stopped working" or something along the lines of that, my guess is that its something to do with the back up and using different GAPPS,
Am i doing something wrong? any help would be appreciated

What is the proper way for me to restore the backedup data from Titanium Backup? I have all my users apps and system data backed up, however my concern is if I restore all my system data, I might run into issues with a new ROM that I flash.
I think it would be best for me to first understand what each type of system data does before I restore it. Correct me if I am wrong:
- user app data is basically all the apps i installed, the settings, and data associated with those apps. I am guessing I can easily restore these without worrying of any conflicts with the new ROM i flash.
- system data: For me the most important settings and data are my SMS, email accounts that I have setup, and basic phone settings such as ring tones, etc. How do I figure out which system data relates to these settings/data I require to backup and restore.
Rule of thumb: never, ever restore system data on a different ROM. Ever. It should only take you a few minutes to set up your ringtones and email accounts again anyway. Backing up and restoring your sms is fine as it isn't really system data anyway. User apps: go for it, restoring user apps with their data is no problem at all.

In Titanium Backup which system data do I need to backup in order to get my SMS, email accounts that I have setup and their settings?
For SMS, is it the Photone/Messaging Stroage (SMS/MMS/APN) one?
I have setup my Android to only sync contacts and calendar with an Exchange email account. So if I restore the "email accounts" settings/data, will it also restore the contacts/caledar sync settings or is it related to another app?

If you're updating the existing ROM you can dirty flash, this means flashing the updated ROM zip over the top of the existing ROM without wiping anything. This way when the phone boots back up it's exactly the way you left it except it's updated. Thus removing the need to restore any system data.

If you're updating or dirty flashing the same ROM you don't even really need to wipe cache or dalvik cache. Same goes for gapps usually. If you run into issues though it's time for a clean flash.

The more refined ROMs have a gapps backup feature so that when you dirty flash your gapps aren't touched at all, I guess Blisspop doesn't have that feature. So you'll need to flash gapps each time you update.

Titanium doesn't backup personal data like images, music, etc. It's restricted to apps and system type data. There are apps out there that can backup your images to the cloud (the new Google Photos app springs to mind), but I just occasionally connect my phone to my Linux laptop and manually backup that stuff.
Hi,
with the latest Android versions I found Titanium Backup to get more and more unreliable. For example I was not able to use batch restore after my recent migration to the Pixel 6 because Titanium Backup would get stuck after a couple of apps.
So my question is: What's the best root/non-root backup app right now?
Thanks!

Thanks. I didn't know about that. But it seems that there is no standalone version and it needs to be built into the is itself. So this is not really useful for me, since I want to stay on the stock Ron with Magisk.

For TB, i noticed it hangs on restoring of apps. But if i install app via PlayStore or manually via APK and then restore app data in TB it works as promised.

hi thx for your reply.
no swfit does nor give any warnings. i noticed but so far i do not think it managed to restore any app data or settings neo backup does it some times after i install apk from play and then restore data only in neo. does not works all the tiume but some times i gety lucky. but allin all very disapointing spent 4 days trying to root my new phone with out bricking it my main reason was to be able to restore my backups so sad to learn titanium backup is gone used it a lot in the past. the idea was to only restore the apps I was missing not just every thing i had on my old phone (like a natural filter) but is sems the worl dhas gone total paranoid with security so lost of functionality (progress) has been scarificed for my security like I would be in danger if my bloodpressure would get known to the internet now I feeel every one knows exceptt me. or backup software refusing to backup if you do not wish to encrpt your data on sdcard) (no of course I di not want to encrypt my local backups I feelle it would just an othe risc of loosing my data. Where it once was omportant not to loose your data not every thing seems focused on destroying my data at the first sign of any danger. I rather have a copy of my vacarion pictures out in the wild than loose them my self for ever. I understand some people think different. but darn pls let me choose.

I understand you
But you also have to know that the developers of titanium backup haven't released an update for over 4yrs so it is reasonable that it cannot work perfectly in higher android versions
Security has always been the talking point right now
And like you said people have different perspectives

hi thx for youre reply.
i am not upset with the developers (we should be glad they exist at all but just un happy with the way thing go in the cyber world.) I just learned my brand new samsung phone can't be used with my drone since the dji fly app is not compatible with android 13 for some reason. I blame google (google reallay is the compatibilie antichrist isnt it?)) and dji. Google for updating to fast and dji for not being ready for the new restrictions. I mean both are not small names I could read my heart rate with the 3 euro "smart"wathchs from ali express the only (big) down side was that the battery drained in like 1 hour and or problems with bluetooth not connecting. So my wife bought me the 180 euro "original" well it strays connected (mostly) but heart rate? no way is not safe for me to know. but yes its perspective.
Than she made it worse buy buying me a samsung phone thinking samnsung+samsung should work.. I mean I have the IR sensor of my TV in the lower left corner and there is a something blocking it so I have to stretchs to have my remote reach the sensor. Now its obviously not posisble (easy) for me to move the sensor. but in software it should be easy. (or at least cheap and possible after the thing is made (most of the times)).
About titanium backup. That really was an awesome program a shame the developer(s) stopped. (No bad feelings I just miss the app) It used to work like magic. I guess not enough people bought the pro version. (maybe google will come with android premium soon)
yeah I feel evry udate I get lesss. While the pre 2000 slogan was updatews more features Maybe that was true than for me evry update I loose lost of features one thing I did notice and love is the option (it seems as default android option) to reverse the back and recents button on the phone since it got swapped compared my old phone and I am old and slow to adapt and the settitings elst me change it) that actually made me smile. if only google could be google again and spent some effort in letting users tweak the phone to make it work like the user wants. WIthout needing to root.
Maybe in android 23.
ps never unpair your galaxy watch form your phone. coz even if you reconnectct it the stupid eatch thinks its a new phone and it is goin gto factory rest it self. wow great idea.

Heres what i do:
1> (If you have Org TWRP/ Custom TWRP) Reboot to that TWRP (Regardless of whether youre on Custom ROM/ Stock ROM/ Modified Stock ROM/ Ported ROM with or without Magisk)
2> In TWRP, Mount all partitions that are Mountable.
3> In TWRP, Go to WIPE section and select Advanced Wipe then Wipe Dalvik/ART Cache & Cache Partitions.
4> In TWRP, Go to BACKUP section then Select the following Partitions: Boot, Recovery, Data, Odm, Product, Vendor , System & Storage.
5> Create the Nandroid (TWRP) Backup (Typically the backup size comes to 7-8 GB if RAM SWAP File hasnt been created prior to backup).
6> #NOTE: Dont rely on Internal Storage Backup, it may/may not backup your personal data, so use a pen drive/OTG to backup the Internal Storage files. Also, don't select any other Partitions except the ones mentioned above.
7> Once the Baclup is done DONT CUT PASTE RATHER COPY the Backup TWRP Folder from the Internal Storage directly to PC using TWRP MTP (dont boot to android & then copy the Backup).
8> While restoring the backup from TWRP later if you find (error: File too large) then First Flash Custom ROM/Stock ROM etc.(Dont boot to Android yet), Leave out the file (system_image.emmc.win) and copy the rest to Internal Storage or OTG using TWRP MTP. Let TWRP restore remaining Files except (system_image.emmc.win)
9> After restoration completed , Wipe Dalvik/ART & Cache Partitions again , then REBOOT to TWRP. YOUR DEVICE WILL BE RESTORED TO PRE-BACKUP STATE.

hi thanks for your detailed guide. but i never got twrp installed. only magisk. fastboot seems no longer available so just flasing boot.img was not and option for me on my a13 i managed magics by not patching the boot.img but the whole ap_ firmware file. but that does not matter
i am looking for a way to make an individual backup of the app and data so i can backup before uninstall and if i regret my uninstalll i can restore that single app. or use it to tranfer my apps + data to my new phone .
i used to do that with titanium all the to time. i guess its called progress and i am a lot safer now i cant have decent backups.
but hey thanks again for your effort explaining. i am sure some one else can use that information

Hi Hans,
Yeah backing up an individual app was nice in TB Pro but the method I told you maybe look to be a huge 7-8Gb file but if you mess up a single app you can still revert back to how the device was just before you messed upthe app, i mean the backup takes about 2-3 minutes and restorations take even lesser about less than a minute. So for now TWRP backup does work flawlessly for at least Virtual A/B Partition devices. You could try reaching out to TB Devs on PleySthore or Tgram maybe to request for an update for recent Andoid versions. Good Luck.
