[Q] Moving from DroidKang to another ROM - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I am quite new to the android scene as I have been an iOS user for quite a few years (No judging please )
Basically, I have DroidKang v10 as my ROM on my phone, and i am trying to switch to cataclysm, or in fact any other ROM, but everytime I change ROM and restore my DATA ONLY backup, I keep getting the "unfortunately com.android.phone has stopped working" or something along the lines of that, my guess is that its something to do with the back up and using different GAPPS,
Am i doing something wrong? any help would be appreciated

you generally dont want to restore data from one rom to another, especially system spps. by doing so, you should expect issues.

go to the main settings, accounts, google, press the top account(yours), make sure app data is checked, then manually sync it(or look at what time it was synced last. also, go back to backup and reset and make sure that automatic restore is enabled as well. it syncs/restores play store apps data and your system settings.

[Guide] Survivng a Data Wipe / Update (Reduces Force Closes, too!)

Alright, this is a guide for everyone who has come to me saying "When I update, XXX.apk force closes" or "I hate doing a wipe every time I update"
What you will need:
Computer
Backup for Root Users
Google Account
SD Card
( Yes, this is written for idiots, )
What to do:
Power on your phone
Sync your google account
Run Backup for root users
Perform a data backup (first option)
Upon completion connect the phone to PC
Mount the sd card and open BackupRoot/data
delete everything related to the system
This is providers folders, htc.android folders, anything that isn't related to an app that you have installed
You should be left with just your program folders
These are things like nl.rogro.GScriptFull, and other INSTALLED programs
Do the update, wipe your phone, ect. (Whatever you had to do)
Run Backup for root users after opening any apps that have a EULA
These are things such as "Welcome, this program does some stuff" that appear when you first start the app and prevent data from being written until they have been accepted in full
Choose Restore Data (the option to the right of the first one you used)
Sync Google account
Congratulations, you have restored.
Now Backup for Root Users is a great app, but many people do not realize that when you back up all of your data, things like calendar and Mms may be different versions. Unlike installed apps that are meant to accept data from different versions of the same app, these programs may carry the same name but may read data differently. Things like calendar do not transport well, but by syncing your account you prevent losing anything because it is all reloaded by the sync.
Note: You will lose settings for Settings and Home Screen. These cannot be prevented and are the MOST COMMON cause of issue because the code for Launcher, Rosie, and the System are CONSTANTLY being changed. It's a small price to pay...
Great Advice!!! Thanks!

Ah, so you're the person behind this great app.
do you happen to have a thread/blog that explains what some of these backups do? I have a bit of a hard time decyphering some of them.
Correct me if i'm wrong regarding your tutorial twistedumbrella.
If the users are running apps2sd, shouldn't they run the second option of the backup "Backup Data2sd"?
As you requested I published an info page on my blog:

Slightly off topic I suppose, but could you [Blackgin] give us an option when using your program (as I do) to automatically backup only the Application Data that Twisted mentions above. That would save us the step of going in and deleting all that other stuff. You could call it "Pre-Wipe Backup" or something.

Easier said than done. You either have to index all apps and backup relative to that list (data is often a different name than the app) or index the system and skip that data (again variable by build). Honestly it would be a little too complicated unless you have set data lists just due to the variable nature of app name to data location.
Here is 1 more addition:
suppose u r gona have a wipe & dont want to do google account sign in again but want it to be automatically signed-in @ the first boot after updating,
Grab the attachment, extract & run bat file
It will backup google account database & will restore database:
Note: Backup When Phone Is running Means not in recovery mode
&
Restore after Updating/Wiping But in Recovery Mode Even restoring as soon as u update will do....

EDIT: Done
So if I am on a build using aps2SD, I choose that option right? The first time nothing backed up/restored properly
For me on cyanogen build, it works also the normal apk backup..
I backed up my sms while using Cyanogen 3.4.6, and i just flash JACHero, can I restore those SMS or will I run into some errors?

It depends on what you are using (app2sd or not) and what you want to backup..
If you want to backup data without system one, chose data-sys (or that for app2sd).. If you want a full data backup chose backup data (or that for app2sd)
Backup for root users doesn't work for me.
When I start the application the first time I click on always allow permission.
Then I click on any buttons to save and nothing.
Just a message very fast "Performing Backup..."
On SD there is a directory "BackupRoot" and inside 2 Directories "dataNoSys" and "sd".
any idea?

Going back to stock ROM - how can I do that?

Ok, I flashed Nothrillrs A700 build for the A510. It is fast and high sensitivity, but has got some problems.
I now want to go back to my stock Acer ROM...how can I do this? My build previously was _A510_1.073.00_WW_GEN1
Also, once I go back, what will I lose? I.e., unlocked bootloader, root, cwm. Can I OTA after flashing back to stock?
Any and all help will be welcome!

You surely did a nandroid backup before flashing the new rom? Easiest way to go back is to restore your old rom (boot into CWM recovery, select restore and chose the image you made before flashing the new rom). You won't loose anything as the restore process just re-creates your system to the point where you made the backup.

Ok, but the image size is just about 12 MB. The ROM I flashed was about 300MB. Will this restore all my apps too?
Thank God I did the nandroid backup. Everything back to normal. I never knew this was possible. How come the recovery saved on my ext SD card is only 12 MB in size, but this can restore every single detail of my system as per normal?
One problem: it says system updater failed. Does this mean I won't be able to get anymore updates again? Any idea why?
Update: I can't get refunds from Google Play anymore, within the 15 mins period after flashing this ROM, and even after returning to my previous nandroid restore. Any way to fix it?

Perhaps you ask too many refunds? I've heard of accounts being flagged to prevent piracy (it's easy to buy an app, copy it, refund it, etc.) for too many refunds.
It's not because of my ROM as refunding works fine when using my ROMs. You can even backup/restore to your Google account when switching between ROMs, so Google doesn't see them as 'unofficial'.

I thought the same. So I created a brand new Google account, logged in to Play store....and I still can't refund apps! Actually, the refund option is there, but not for 15 minutes. The moment I exit Google Play after downloading the app, the refund option will disappear. Before that I can still see it as long as I returned to the app page in 15 minutes.
I strongly suspect is your ROM. Can anyone else please verify?
UPDATE: Ok, can you try getting an app (just a cheap one will do), and then use it, do other things like run the web browser/play a game and then go back to Google Play and get a refund after 5 minutes. I believe with the A700 Franken ROM for A510, this will not be possible.
It's not my ROM, I've tested this before, but fine:

}
Google Play page of the app and purchasing
Purchased and installing
Started the app, then went back to Google Play after a few minutes
Refunded
Like I said before, it has nothing to do with my ROM, or any other custom ROM for that matter. It most likely has to do with the fact that you, as you said yourself, refund alot of apps. There's a reason Google brought the timeframe back from 24 hours to 15 minutes, they are trying to prevent piracy and I'd be suspicious too if someone refunds quite alot. Especially since most of the apps out there offer free versions you can try before purchasing the full version.
But, all that's just my thoughts, and I am not Google. Therefor I'd suggest contacting Google to see what's up.

What method did you use to update? Flashing via recovery or Carbon Delta?
Actually i had a very old carbon rom(**012014). then i flashed the new one, downloaded it a 2-3 days back and flashed it today. did now wipe any thing. then after boot the system asked me to update i think thats the carbotdelta thing. So i actually did both.

im sure i didnt wipe anything, since its the same carbon i thought it wasnt necessary. current version is carbon-kk-nightly 20140615-0050. my apps with app data is present and yes im able to move data to internal.
Usually in case if something gets deleted its the apps and app data that gets deleted and the internal storage is safe rite. do u think the carbon delta way of updating could have done that.

Carbon Delta "should" be keeping your storage. Also in recent builds of Carbon they added the option to keep data/Xposed/density when flashing a new nightly (Persistence in Carbon Fibers). If you can still move files to your internal storage then it's definitely not a corrupt partition.
I'm not sure why it wiped your internal storage, sorry. Did you delete any folders in your storage when connected to a PC?

You can't change the contact list automatic pictures, it was a change made in AOSP for 4.4.3, to match the same placeholder image as in the Gmail app. (1st letter of contact's name). You can try taking one out from an old nightly but that will probably break things.

It wont find my External SD Card though (im using USB OTG since my phone doesnt have a SD card slot) so im gunna backup and then move it to my SD card using a Root Explorer
if you have root explorer lets open it and click storage
look in this folder, maybe your external sdcard is named as extsd or sdcard1, etc
reopen super user and clik backup path and change as /storage/sdcard1/SmsContactsBackup
or /storage/extsd/SmsContactsBackup depending of what is name of your external sdcard on /storage
You can do this to usb otg too

Deleted youtube...OOPS

I used root app manager to delete youtube and now my phone only boots into fastboot I do have a backup in the manager's "recycle bin" folder. My question is, where should this app be placed? If someone could check their file browser and let me know the folder name and location it would be greatly appreciated! I've been led to believe it may be in /system/app or /system/priv-app but apparently the manager also deleted the folder or I'm looking in the wrong spot. I'm hoping that relocating the apk will solve my problem without having to reflash OOS. Thanks in advance!!

Unfortunately it didnt work. But I did place the app in /system/system/app/YouTube/ as ther was no app folder in /system. I am running the latest 10.3 update. I might try to fix contents, but im running out of patience unless someone has another suggestion for me. Thanks again @louforgiveno

Ah yes 10.3....sorry I'm still on pie.
By any chance have you looked in data/app? (If that path even exists anymore on 10.3)
And did you try to wipe cache/dalvik? (Maybe that would allow for boot?)
Hope you get it sorted out!
Sent from my [device_name] using XDA-Developers Legacy app
You could always try to flash gapps and see if that helps, but I can not see for the life of me how deleting YouTube would prevent the device from booting...
So I booted it up in the other slot. Seemed to be working fine, except WiFi wouldnt work. If I enabled it, it wouldn't even get to searching before it disabled itself. So i backed up with titanium (only user apps) and transfered files to the computer, and used the stock recovery to factory reset. Maybe I should've tried booting from there, but i went ahead and installed twrp, installed the latest 10.3 update i had saved from the phone (which was downloaded by OOS), and when i booted it up, WiFi is still broken Not only that, but after taking an hour to transfer my stuff back to the phone, OOS lost it on the first boot (entirely different issue, just venting at this point). So now I'm going to try the fastboot route. I found a guide from user mauronofrio that hopefully will fix everything. If anyone has any other ideas to just get the phone back to factory, I'll take them in case this doesn't work lol. Apparently Youtube is a very important system app!! :silly:
I'm finally back in business. The reason for my post was to not have to factory reset. Never thought it would've given me this much trouble (headbang) . Moral of the story.... OOS must run off of youtube app

That is not the moral of the story.
The moral is don't **** around with the /system partition. Why you didn't just use adb to disable the app is beyond me.

I could've disabled it within my regular settings. I wanted it removed so I could have a different version installed.

Rootless YouTube vanced can be installed and used alongside regular YouTube.
Yes I know. I wanted to delete YouTube. I wanted off of my device. I succeeded. The phone did not. Eventually, we will both succeed ???
