Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket (AT&T) Screen Lines - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

I saw somewhere on the T-Mo GSII section that there was a thread of about 50 pages of people complaining that their screens, under varying brightness settings and to varying degrees, displayed some vertical "ghost" lines running up and down the screen..
I picked up a Skyrocket earlier today at the AT&T store and was disappointed to see that the screen was doing just that. Hence, me searching and finding this thread. After some thinking, I went back to the store and exchanged the Skyrocket for the Vivid, which I am even more displeased with, although for other reasons (call quality, weight, etc. Although I'm going to use it for a few days to see how it goes). I just wanted to try it out of curiosity, a restocking fee is alright for me should I decide to go back to the Skyrocket.
Has anyone else experienced this with a Skyrocket or GSII in general? I was surprised to have searched this general section and not found anything about it. The display model in the store exhibited the same "ghost" lines as well.

There is no reason to pick up any other smartphone as of now if you own a sgs2, assuming your on at&t or even international, you would have the dual core exynos, which out performs anything on the market as of now, even the skyrocket.

That... has nothing to do with my question.
I'm not asking for specs and numbers and names. I know what all of it is, and I don't care - it's about what I want and like. And I would hope others are able to do as they please as well.
ANYWAY. No one has had any screen troubles?

I've never seen any lines on my I9100, nor heard of others having the issues described in that thread. At minimum brightness, in absolute darkness, I can see a few blobs on a black screen, but even then I have to really look for them or I won't notice. The usual complaints I've seen about I9100 screens are yellowish tint and sometimes burn-in, though I haven't experienced either of those personally.
You probably already asked in the T-Mo forum since you linked a thread from it, but I'm pretty sure the Skyrocket uses the same screen as the T989, so imo you're more likely to find useful feedback there. I'm assuming you're only interested in LTE AT&T phones, so you're probably f'd, but the I777 uses the same screen as the I9100 where I've never heard of that particular problem.

I just got the Skyrocket on Sunday and I'm having the same issue with the vertical lines. Looks pretty terrible on dark images/backgrounds in low ambient light.
I searched a ton yesterday on Google and this is first place I found someone complaining of the same problem. I can't decide whether it's good or bad to know someone else is seeing the same issue.

I have 2 international i9100's.
They both have this issue, one is more noticeable than the other, but as you say usually on low brightness/dark images. Suspect it is a result of the manufacturing process of the S-AMOLED Plus screen and if they haven't fixed it by now in the skyrocket (almost surprising but at the same time not really) they aren't going to.
For me it doesn't bother me a whole ton as I don't see it most of the time but it does kind of suck lol.

I got an international. What Anandtech calls persistence bothers me,
The situation reminds me of the early large size lcd tv days. Lines, clouding, uneven this that. In the future it will be all fixed but its not today.

No issues here.. Our only issue on our screen is the blobs, yrllowish tint and "burins"..

Someone needs to put a sticky to keep Skyrocket discussion out of these forums.
The device is a Galaxy S II in name only and nothing else.
Shame on Samsung for diluting their brand like this... The ****rocket is going to ruin their reputation in the USA, as if AT&T's mangling of the stock ROM for the I777 didn't already.

my rogers s2 has the same issue as well

I heard about this issue before I got my SII (not Skyrocket), and even knowing about the problem and using the phone a lot at the lowest brightness I have never noticed it on my screen.
I have however noticed the yellow tint problem mentioned above, and I use Screen Adjuster to compensate for it by adding more blue.

I have the i-9100M (Canada) and the SGH-I727R (same as AT&T Skyrocket) and I don't have any issue with the screen. Had both dark and white background and didn't see any issues.

same here, i have the same model and i have no issues at all.

Ohh wow!!! another android device, all of you have an old model device again hahaha

Moved to proper section

I have the same problem with vertical lines on the screen. I bought my Skyrocket from Best Buy on release day and noticed the screen issue in lowest brightness on Monday. I exchanged it for another. This one has the issue as well, but it's not as bad. My wife has the i777 and hers has the vertical lines to a very minute extent; you don't even notice unless you're really looking for it.

hmmm, am i one of the few lucky individuals who do not have this issue? Or am i just blind? Is there something specific i have to do to replicate the issue? Ive tried looking at many different images, color combinations, at different brightness settings, different ambient light settings (from outside in the sun to inside a pitchblack closet) and i have not seen what everyone has been describing? I have a Captivate, Infuse, and euro I9100 (water damaged), that I have tried to compare them to, and my skyrocket looks exactly the same. I believe the Infuse uses the same screen as well and ive not a problem with that, and the cappy still looks prestine minus the (plus) in the Super AMOLED. Even the nonfunctioning water damaged i9100 displayes weird ass colors and crap on the screen but its finest looking garbage ever.

Mine aren't that noticeable, but can be seen easily when I launch xda app. The brown start screen makes them jump out.

Now on my Skyrocket I have the vertical lines and my screen is so freaking blue its pissing me off. I also have a Euro I9100 and comparing the Skyrocket to that is night and day difference. I will try exchanging it Saturday and see if the other one will be better. I will take some side by side pics later tonight and post them.

Yeah I just returned an ATT SGS2 yesterday for the skyrocket and this screen was pissing me off the moment i left the store. The screen on the Orig sgs2 was probably the best mobile display I had ever seen but this shyt is for the birds, I'm thinking of exchanging and if the second one isnt any better then going with the vivid!!!

Newer Captivates have brighter, less blue screens

After some research and recieving my replacement Captivate (I broke my old one. Check the thread titled "To all new Captivate owners" for pictures and the story), I noticed that compared to my old Captivate, my new one is brighter, and the screen temperature is much more neutral. The pictures have also come out much better than my old Captivate and have rivaled and overtaken my point-and-shoot.
The device seems much faster (on JF6 -- which i network unlocked my phone on ) and does not lag at all. The battery seems to hold much better because I turned the phone on when it had 6% battery and it held that charge for almost an hour of me setting up the device at max brightness and dropped down to 4% after I disconnected from WiFi. Before, the charge would drop down 5 or even 10 points. But of course, i'll "recalibrate" the battery.
The network reception definitely seems a full one to two bars higher and the contrast of the screen has vastly improved to boot.
Sadly, the GPS still is a pile of crap and my broken Captivate still has the better GPS signal and gains a full non-AGPS powered lock within 16 seconds on the JPK/JI6 Hybrid ROM.
These changes seem to indicate that the Voodoo ColorFix mod that is supposibly coming for our Captivates would be a YMMV modification since the screens apparently have changed. I'll update this thread once I flash JH7 through Kies Mini and see if the speed has gotten better, or the battery works better, or of the GPS works at all.
Cheers,
I got my captivate just over a month ago. I was reading some of the complaints about the blueish screen and I don't see any of that in mine. Maybe they revised the hardware a bit. I don't really ever use GPS so I can't comment on that.

Where did you get yours from? I got mine about a week after it was released and I've experienced almost none of the problems that people commonly report with this phone. It ran pretty quick out of the box, the screen is nice and bright without any noticeable blue hue, and GPS has always been great. I got mine from amazon.com, perhaps it's some common retailer most people got their phone from that received a bad batch of captivates?
Mine I got at my local AT&T store. It wasn't a authorized retailer but a plain old AT&T Store.
I read somewhere that Samsung was likely no longer going to be shipping Super AMOLED screens on the Galaxy S line and replacing them with Super TFT LCD. Perhaps this is what you are seeing? Granted, it seems to be mostly rumor based, but that's like believing the OTA update fixed our GPS.

when the display is turned off, does it have the blueish tint from certain angles?

Mytouch4G screen color washed out and too bright.

Does anybody else notice that the screen colors on the MT4G are a little too high, its like the colors are too bright. I know that I can turn the brightness down, but right now I just have it set to automatic and I like that and I don't want to have to change that.
Does anyone know how to change the contrast on the MT4G? I just want to saturate the colors a little more. Anyone?

You can't do this on any android phone, rooted or not. Could you take a picture or maybe tell tmobile your problem, it might be an actual lcd problem.
Yeah I thought that I was the only one. Especially on this site when you view it from your mobile browser, the brown XDA heading is too bright and faded
I noticed it when I got my wife a MT4g. On her phone the colors are slightly more saturated and the blacks are slightly darker also. It is kinda bothering me now.

My wife is experienceing this as well. She went to look for the night time bedside clock app and found when the app turned the brightness down to 6 the entire screen went black, but at a brightness level of 7 the screen was dim, but still brighter than I would expect.
She commented on her Vibrant when the brightness was turned down it would go all the way down and have a black background, not a washed out dim gray background.
Hopefully there will be a fix coming.
I posted elsewhere that the screen, while obviously not as good as the Vibrant's, seemed to be just as good as that of the Nexus, Incredible, Eris, etc.
Well, I stand corrected. After reading your post, I downloaded 'Night Watch', and compared the look to that of my wife's Nexus. The Nexus does indeed appear to have a black background at 39% brightness, with vibrant green (color I chose) numbers. The MT4G appears more grey-ish, with less vibrant green numbers. Even when I reduced the brightness by another 5%, the MT4G was still grey-ish.
Now, I'm not sure if this is the screen hardware itself, or something in the contrast settings of the phone. It did bum me out a little, as I've been a pretty staunch supporter of this phone since I got it.
The dilemma is,
Do I decide to go back to a Vibrant for a nicer screen, but much fewer options? (not much chance of that)
Look to find another Nexus; and tak ea step back in terms of processor speed, ram, features, et.c (with the exception of the color trackball, which Nexus lords over ever other phone)
Wait until something better comes out; as there are no other android phones comparable to this one in terms of features, available by T-mo right now? (Wait? Really? Arggh!)
All in all, I'm very happy with this device. And maybe I'm just knee-jerking. But, in truth, it does bother me somewhat. Thoughts?

I know exactly what you mean, the blacks look grey and the reds look pink.
I think there is something wrong with the contrast balance in the software somehow, because it does seem like a nice screen, but those are just my thoughts.
I sincerely hope that this is the case. If so, perhaps some tweaking can be done in the settings, mch like, but nothng at all like, the registry settings change in WinMo phone, wherein the colors/contrast could be adjusted by assigning different numbers.
I realize that there is a huge difference between android and WinMo registry tweaks. But it's hard to believe they would simply included an inferior screen to go along with so many other hardware improvements.
its not an amoled display guys, it's never going to be completely black or have as high a contrast ratio as the nexus or vibrant.
Yeah, I know what kind of screen it is, and I know how others look in comparison, my point is though, my Mytouch3G had better colors. It just seems like something could be done via software.

It has only been out a couple of weeks, I would give it some time and everyone complain a little to T-Mobile and hopefully they can add it to a future OTA update.
I only had the MT4G for a night before returning it for a replacement (which is still in the mail), but I agree: The screen looked very washed out. It was so bad that I am now considering keeping my Vibrant.
I am not asking for SuperAMOLED-like quality, but something average would be nice... not low quality crap.
I'm starting to think there's production issues. The very first 2 units I saw had the washed out look. I saw one today that seemed fine. I went thru the menus and changed the backgrounds. Everything seemed much better on this one.
I wish I could compare them side by side, but these were in 2 different stores.
Thoughts?
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
I had been weary about the screen ever since I got mine last Wednesday. From reading reviews talking about how great the screen looked, and then mine was kinda... blah. First words in my mind when I turned it on was how washed out some of the colors looked.
I took mine back to T-Mobile tonight and swapped it out for a new and I have to say that there's a huge difference. Some of the colors are still a little off, but it looks like it's the app's icon and not the screen itself. Compare the newest YouTube app's red to the TasKiller's red, for instance.
Now to wait on the OTA so I can re-root this thing and clean it off.
I wish I had something to compare mine to. I went to the store, thinking I would compare mine to one of theirs. But it was a bust; as the screen looked exactly the same. So either mine is as good as the replacement you got, but just pales in comparison to the Nexus. Or it's washed out, the one in the store is washed out, and I'm still at square one. Unfortunately, there's no way for me to tell.
I took my MT4G back after running the Asphalt demo next to an Epic and Droid X. The colors were totally faded out and missing details seen on the other devices. The Epic is over-saturated and the X seems to split the difference, not to mention the size is awesome.
Hmm...
Well, being with T-mo, neither of those other two is an option for me. But, I'm thinking about it, and I'm starting to think our phones only seem to pale in comparison.
What I mean is, side by side, yes, they seem to be less-than-stellar. But when used on their own, they seem to be pretty alright... though obviously not as good as what our minds recall the others being.
If you look at a 60hz 1080p tv side by side with a 120hz edge-lit LED tv, yes, the original would look tame. But that's not to say that it doesn't look great on it's own.

Agreed. This is a non-issue in my book. If XDA had a 'firstworldproblems' subsection, this would be at the top:

I am one if the lucky ones I guess, with no bleed issue. I have seen my friends g2x and it does have small bleeding but only with brightness turned all the way up and on a completely black screen. But it wasn't all that bad and he is keeping his as would I. The device is not perfect and not one made so far has been. Or ever will be perfect. Someone will always find what they think is a flaw.

maybe 10% of it at most, but nothing as bad as my picture... I understand a little bit of bleed, and will be ok with that, but mine is enough for a replacement IMO. oh and many are saying they have the phone with NO leakage. so as much as we shouldn't be too unhappy, if some don't have the issue, why should I have to have it!

I would agree with you if there were N1s without wonky touch screens, G2s with decent hinges (perhaps there were a few), Droid Xs without motoblur, etc. To me, it's the idea that there are G2xs without the bleeding (and ones not as bad), and I also happened to get a G2x with heavier bleeding than I'd like. Judging by the amount of people who don't have problems, and considering that this is a forum that attracts people who are peculiar about their phones, I'm fairly sure that my replacement won't be anywhere near as bad.
These kinds of threads are common whenever a new phone is released. I think the worst one ever was the G2 and hingegate. However, it's still helpful to get an idea of how widespread certain issues are. Do we need 20 threads about the same thing? No, of course not. But to complain about people saying there's something wrong, in their opinion, with their phone is just stupid.

I suspect the amount of bleeding is roughly the same across all G2xs, but some people are just less sensitive to it. In fact, I had never even known what LCD bleeding is (and I've owned 5 Android phones the last two years) until this G2x drama began. I decided to inspect my devices and sure enough my Nook Color has some bleeding at the bottom. I never noticed it before, but I bet many of the disappointed G2x'ers would have. Some of us just aren't sensitive to it. Kinda reminds me of the 'dust under the screen' paranoia with the N1.

ROFL. It's hard being first... =/
what the hell guys. now you all gave this perfectionist something to look for.
i used adw to hide the staus bar and set my background to solid black. it does show for me in the top right corner moreso than anywhere. on my default home screen, i have the weather clock from beautiful widgets running. i have to really strain to see it. if i slide over to a screen with nothing but black background, it's clearly visible. but only if i put the phone in a dark spot, like under my desk. it's still visible though. but not like it's blinding. even with 2.3 and a black status bar, the icons would hide it,on my phone at least. am i going to return it? no. but if i heard tmo considered this an issue and lg had phones with no bleeding and were willing to replace them? then i might. this phone might get sold in a year if the merger goes through because no way am i going to att. so for me, i can live with it. i did notice it in my camera app before this thread was started. but didn't think it was that big a deal. it's not like it shows while playing videos. and i haven't noticed any problems with pictures taken.
I agree all LCD's have some bleeding, my old G2x had it bad like posted in the other screen thread. I noticed mine immediately after turning it on, on the initial setup screen, on darker background, while playing games, and watching a test movie.
Coming from a N1 with absolutely no bleeding, I chaulked it up as normal for LCD's. After reading some didn't have it, I went to the store and looked at the display model and bought another one.
Comparing the two is night and day. So all I can say is return it if they won't swap it out. The original was purchased online and the second one was tested at a store with a 14 day return policy attached. Getting a refund on the first one.
Yes large lcd monitors and lcd tvs have screen bleed largely due to the tech, but its piss poor for a small 4" lcd display to have screen bleed as well.
You don't see screen bleed on any other lcd phones such as htc desire hd, xperia and the iphone. Do a search on this forum and the only phone that have screen bleed problems is this phone.
This is NOT a common issue on tiny lcd screens.
People saying this is common and should just accept it is just making lame excuses up for lg.
I understand both sides of the story here
Your side: Yes I understand this is super annoying, and it's a KNOWN issue so why didn't someone make 1 Thread about it, and just comment in the thread.
Everyone else side: Okay I would understand the bleeding screen if it were lets say 2008 or so, but it's 2010 and were really having problems with the screen? Seriously? It's not like they didn't know, they merely didn't care I'm guessing.. Another thing that makes me wonder, is why if they are making (they being lg) iPhone retina screens, couldn't they bump up the display a little?
Ps: Idk, not starting anything, just explaining my point of view

[Q] Screen no longer "Black" - Anyone else?

I came from the Infuse (in fact, I still have it lying around), and I love the S-AMOLED+ display. It's beautiful, and the blacks are AMAZINGLY black on it, and they used to be the same on my Skyrocket.
I've had my device for just a couple weeks, and I just noticed tonight in a dark room that the screen no longer goes to a pure, 100% black anymore. In fact, you can see mostly-dark-grey blotch almost completely covering the screen, with some limited areas that are still pure black.
Apart from this, I've noticed no other issues with the screen during normal lighting & use.
No my QUESTION (thus mandating the [Q]), is this: Has anyone else had this issue?
I suspect a factory defect, but recently, I tripped the flash counter. I purchased the device through AT&T Premier, and I'm still within 30 days. I'm thinking I'll be attempting to make a warranty exchange before long.
Edit:
Found this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1343041
Is it possible for a rom to change how black the screen gets? :S I'm using SkySTOCKeteer v1.5, da_g's 0.3 kernel. I experimented earlier today with Alien#3, which totally borked my device and I had a very hard time trying to recover it, even using my nandroid backup(s). This was the whole reason my stupid flash counter has been tripped - I ended up having to use the return-to-stock Odin method, which has zero warnings on it about tripping the counter. *raises fist in anger*
I can't blame the dev's for any of this - I'm silly enough to screw around flashing things, right?
Yeah i would odin the stock tar and exchange it asap if i were you. My blacks are still amazing. You dont wana be stuck with a flawd one

I'm going to Odin back to stock and check it again. Also, I'm going to charge it to full overnight and all that, just to see if there's any change. I seriously doubt any of this will help, but I will exhaust all options.
Thanks for the feedback, silver.
Okay, I'm now noticing that it's not just the blackness that's affected.
I'm having the same issues this guy is having: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19205872
It seems that some Skyrockets have this issue. I wonder, though, why I'm "suddenly" having this issue? Is it possible that the Odin return-to-stock somehow borked my screen calibration? Regardless, this appears to be a known issue with all the Qualcom based devices, and I think this justifies a warranty exchange. Hopefully whatever they send me will not have or develop this issue...

im thinking maybe a samsung quality control issue here....some have this issue some do not, mine does NOT but i read the many threads about this so i know its an issue.
The lines issue will most likely never go away. they are visible on all three 4.5" variants sprint tmo and att. i have now had three skyrockets, all from different stores...all three have been exactly the same...all display units in stores have had them...every single phone i have checked...even friends on other carriers...they all have the lines

Yeah, that's what I keep reading everywhere. Such a shame! I am starting to miss my beautiful Infuse screen. I just don't miss the single-core GPU, the 720p camera, and the less-than-standard GPS receiver.
I called AT&T Premier and made a 3-way conference call with a local corporate store, and I was able to take back my Skyrocket and get the OGSGS2 and pay only the $50 difference and no restocking fee.
The screen does not have the vertical lines, like the SR did, but the screen still not quite the same as the Infuse (as far as "blackness" is concerned). The SR was FAR worse with the blackness issue than the OGSGS2, and is definitely within tolerable.

Should I switch to the Galaxy S3 from the Galaxy Nexus? UPDATE: VICTORY!!! BOOYA!

I have been having issues with replacement Galaxy Nexus' having incorrect color calibration and I kept complaining to Verizon.
They offered to send me a different device, and considering the Galaxy S3 has better hardware, I was thinking of taking them up on the offer.
The only thing Im really holding out on before I make my final decision is for the dev community to get the bootloader unlocked.
So do you guys think I should stick with my Nexus or have Verizon send me a Galaxy s3?
UPDATE: After talking to multiple customer service reps, they told me the only thing that they could do for me was update me to the DROID RAZR...I told them that that is not a "comparable device" and all of the multiple service reps still wouldnt budge. They even went as far as to tell me that their system WILL NOT allow them to upgrade me to the Galaxy S3. Anyway, so I was fed up with the customer service B.S. and so I emailed their executive office. After about two days, I received an email from them asking for the account info and some contact info. They told me that under normal circumstances they wouldnt do this, but she told me the issue I was complaining about with my Galaxy Nexus was a know issue, but at the moment, they dont have a fix for it. She also told me that the customer service people were lying. That the system will let them do it, but it is just a little more difficult. The only thing that I am kind of knit picky about is that theyre sending me the blue one, because they dont have any white ones left, but its whatevs...at least I am getting a free phone and I won.

Even with the locked bootloader the s3 is still pretty amazing. It seems like everyday someone in the community is making something for this phone to make that much better. Ive never owned a nexus so i cant compare but im sure u would love this phone.
I upgraded from the GNex. You won't go wrong here. First, the TW interface is really nice in my opinion. The battery is insanely great and there was no custom kernel on the GNex that gave me even remotely the battery life I get now. The camera on this phone is amazing. It has a bigger display. Better processor. I say go for it you will not be disappointed.

Thats a very good question. In my household we have both the S3 and the Nexus...and I cant say which one is better. I personally have the S3 and love it, even with the locked bootloader theres still soo much you can do. The Nexus is a fantastic phone on its own, but if you have the nexus and crave the development...then stay with it. Or find someone with a S3 and switch phones for couple days
The final decision is yours, but:
While the Galaxy Nexus is a great phone, I feel if you have the opportunity, you should get the Galaxy S3. While the locked bootloader isn't it's greatest feature, it's roaring development is. There are devs out there working extremely hard to unlock the bootloader on this device. And even though the bootloader is locked, the XDA community has managed to flash custom roms/kernels onto the device using the awesome development of Kexec.
And even without root or any modification to it's firmware, Samsung's TouchWiz interface isn't too bad and it doesn't affect the phone's performance much either, because the phone itself is quite powerful.
However, if you want a phone that was made for development, then the Galaxy Nexus may be best for you.
So my next question is ...if I got it...Pebble Blue? or Marble White?

We have both colours here, with a white Amzer Shellster case+holster for the white, a black set for the blue.
The white has more of a uniform, understated, contemporary aesthetic in any lighting, and almost feels iPodish in terms of first impression, but is far more approachable. That is, I feel current iPods are not only chunky (which is OK), but their thick metal band around the sides and boring uniformity make them look like pieces of industrial equipment with a white face tacked on. By contrast, the Galaxy S III in white presents as more of a fully sleek and "professional" device, overall. The white case we use keeps that overall feel relatively intact.
The pebble blue is brushed and offers different chroma depending upon the lighting and angle, so there's more interest in its somewhat variable presentation. You can't always pin down how it looks during daily use because it doesn't seem to uniformly reflect ambient light sources from the combination of its brushed colouring and rounded surfaces, which is kind of neat to me. There is a possible purplish hue that can come off the surrounding metal-looking edge and Home button at times, which I see as a positive: it adds to that meandering notion of its colour values and personality. Generally a darker phone, sometimes comes across as medium/medium-light in tint and even tone if light is hitting it squarely (and, depending on the type of light source).
My highly subjective impressions, at least. I can offer pics, if interested.

No need to attach pics, thankyou for the detailed analysis...I went and checked it out the the VZW store and I think if I switch to it Im getting marble white.
I still havent called Verizon about getting the S3...but now that the bootloader is unlocked I am going to...the only thing I am afraid of though is that they are going to tell me I can't get the S3 because it is more expensive than the nexus... I know I can fight the fact the specs on the RAZR are inferior to the Nexus, but how do I fight the specs on the Reazound if they try to offer that to me?

I'm not sure they'll make that switch for you from a nexus to a s3

If you want to fight the specs on the Rezound, say the screen on the Rezound is "remarkably" smaller than that of your Galaxy Nexus. I put "remarkably" in quotes because you can stress that word when explaining the differences, even though the Gnex has only a .35inch gain on screensize compared to the Rezound. Screen size does play a factor when some people buy a phone, you could use that to your advantage.
I came from gnex an don't regret it one bit. I was hesitant because I flashed roms for the nexus all the time looking for speed and battery life. Guess what, this phone has that stock! I love it. Rooting an customs roms are just a nice bonus.
