[Q] Can't flash Custom kernels on NEXUS S 4g - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Noob question??
I've had the HTC Evo 4G for the last month and a half, and before I even purchased it, after talks with old friends of Jailbroken iPhones I had decided I was going to jump into modding headfirst when I got my smartphone, and since that day I've flashed, downloaded, backed up, and restored more things than I could count, learned how to swamp myself out of bricks, learned which kernels sucked and which ones didn't, etc...all the typical XDA stuff.
My girlfriend has a Nexus S 4G that she got 2 weeks afterward, and she has absolutely no interested in the development side of the phone, she wouldn't learn what AOSP meant if you paid her a dollar, but she wants her phone to be awesome. I am trying. HOWEVER...I haven't found success flashing a kernel over any custom rom on her phone YET! I have flashed the stable CyanogenMod7.1 as well as assorted nightly builds, MIUI, the one and only sense rom the Nexus can run properly, and that's all went over fine, but every kernel i've attempted flashing thusfar (Trinity, TalonAce, v7 snap kernel, Nexus Netarchy kernel, and a few others) have either stuck me at a splashscreen that wiping the dalvik and cache partition would not fix, or locked me at the initial black screen with the google logo and lock underneath for indescriminate amounts of time...essentially a brick, not a bootloop. This is the first time i've felt I am truly at a point where no amount of research and reading will be able to empower me to help myself so...help a n00b out here?? Am I doing something wrong??

She is currently running a themed MIUI build 110280 with the stock kernel. Anybody run into this problem or one similar yet? I looked and looked for a thread and found nothing..

flash the rom, flash the gapps(if needed), flash the kernel, then boot. be sure its a latest rom build, because most of the kernels are updated to support the latest android versions. also, if it doesnt boot, sometimes pulling the battery for 3 minutes then sticking it back in and booting helps. if that doesnt work, try flashing the rom and gapps, booting, then back into recovery to flash the kernel separately. dont use rom manager, flash in recovery.

Did all of the above before posting this. Trust me if it as something that simple I wouldn't be here lol

have you tried a different rom?
try this kernel, its one of my favorites. and its miui compatable http://morfic.euroskank.com/simka/TEUV-S22-04102011.zip
its underclocked at 880mhz, undervolted for great batter life, and the gpu/bus is overclocked to 220mhz(10%) for performance. this little 880mhz kernel runs like its overclocked to 1.2ghz.

also, flash this dalvik-wiper.zip before flashing the kernel. if you are using clockworkmod recovery, it doesnt completely wipe your dalvik, this will http://goo.gl/lgO1v

try matrix rom...come with matrix kernal...its the best in my opinion!!

Are you guys serious?? Read the OP...
I have tried different roms, yes, several, and different kernels to flash. It's not an issue of performance or anything, just that I can't get the dang kernel on the phone in the first place. The link for the dalvik wiper wont help me either, as, like I've already stated, I am using Amon-Ra

a few things..
first off, you havent stated anywhere that youre using Amon Ra. 2nd, Amon Ra doesnt make a recovery for the nexus s, i know that because hes a friend of mine. next, instead of saying that youve tried it already, try it again, things change. also, you dont have to be rude about it, just trying to help YOU. which leads me to.. see ya, im not going to waste my time and try to help you

Wanna bet? I could take a pic of me in the recovery on Nexus S easily right now.

then post it troll

Eh, whatever, your posts still weren't helpful in either case...I didn't ask for your rom and kernel preferences, I asked about a hard/software malfunction of some sort. I know what kernel and what rom i'm going for, what I CANT figure out is how to get past this brick wall. Maybe you missed the "impatient" part in the bump, whereas my newness kept my post about the recovery from going through (only 1 per 5 minutes, apparently...didn't even notice). Anyone else that actually went through this problem wanna give it a shot?

@esteway
Never been a troll a day in my life. I've been on xda constantly for the last month seems like, but I've never even been inclinated to join this forum, let alone troll in it. And now the one time I need help no one else either has the problem or knows how to fix it. My recovery makes no difference whatsoever, if I had a modded recovery that isn't either clockwork or amon ra like my cousin has (although I don't know how in the world he got it) my problem still remains. If you can't help me, beat it. You're the one trolling, you weren't even in our conversation.

Youre the one saying u can post the pic so.... prove it. As for your problem I never herd of that issue.

it could be an amon ra recovery that someone ported or built from source, thats possible. it is open sourced, and most recoveries are based on it. but if it is, id flash another recovery because the one you have would be out of date. since you havent tried that, you should try. both clockwork and twrp recoveries are good.

ANYTHING is possible on these phones if given enough time and attention, and I'd assume anyone who frequents these forums as often as either of you do should know that much, so thank you simms. I've seen a modded or black market version of almost every app i've ever downloaded lol I don't say no to anything being possible in android userspace
Anyway, twrp? I've never heard of that one before. Is it more fully functional than clockwork? I'll be trying it out. I'll try ANYTHING out, I just want this to go away...I feel like the only one who has ever run into this problem

Here's the tread to twrp http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1196500
It is a bit different than clockworkmod mod but give it a try see if it fixes your problem.

[Q] Revolutionary vs MoDaCo

I got my MTS4G last week. I rooted my phone before I installed anything. I wanted the ability to use my full version of Titanium. In this I suceeded.
BUT
When I tried to use my copy of ROM Manager, it will not let me do anything with it because I need the Clockwork Mod. My phone is not listed.
Here, I keep seeing references to MoDaCo.
When I had my G2, I rooted with a long process through adb then updated back and forth with ROM Manager. Mostly I had the CM7 nightlies.
Now, there is nothing for my new (replacement) phone. Just saw a new one posted yesterday but it needs MoDaCo to install.
So, where do I go from here?
Instructions on how to get the recovery is in this thread:

That's really just the Modaco recovery. There is no "official" koush ClockworkMod Recovery for the MT4GS. And there is still not yet support for the MT4GS in ROM Manager so you're not going to see your device there yet. Just keep your eyes peeled, sooner or later we'll get full official support once they realize how kick ass this device truly is!
Agreed. New devices don't always have full dev support right off the bat. It usually takes a couple of months before CWM supports a device and another month or two before it sees CM.
so there is still hope we will be supported officially? I am s-off and rooted, I have been waiting to do the same to my boyfriend's phone, because he has no experience dealing with any small problems that may come up, like the charging issue. I am hoping by getting supported with an "official" recovery he will let me root his phone, and CM7 would be awesome....still waiting on the kernel though....

I mean there's some hope. We had word that koush was working on an official recovery but I haven't heard anything in a long time from anyone so who knows. If he doesn't know how to handle any issues that may come up then you'd be better off not rooting his phone honestly. The kernel will come out eventually but probably another month or so. CM7 will be a while too, as there aren't many devs out there that care about our phone - which is unfortunate cause it's such a beast. But for the meantime there are some great stock(ish) ROMs in the dev section and the support for them is incredible!

[Q] flashed kernel and sd card wiped out??

OK I've flashed a few kernels trying to find 1 I like. never had a problem. few none ago I try a new one (Tristan) and it apparently it didn't work cause the previous lordmod one is still in place. BUT all the info, data music, apps and photos on my SD card are/is gone. just poof, vanished. Wtf is that all about. needless to say I'm quite pissed cause all photos of my kids are gone.
any ideas on Wtf could have happened? I cleared dalvik cache as always.

where did you download this 'tristan' kernel? i would check the script in it to see what it actually does when installing the kernel.
sounds like someone put a line in the script to format /mnt/sdcard
this is one of the reasons everyone here should understand what happens when you flash something. understanding the workings could save you from stuff like this.
+1 What Pirateghost stated. I happened to do a search out of curiosity and the only Tristan kernel threads that I found were all specific to the HTC Desire. This is not the same phone that we have, (Inspire/Desire HD).
If your card was formatted, you may want to try using a card reader and going through a Windows or Mac recovery program that you can install. The program may be able to recover most or some of your data. No guarantees though that it will work.
Downloaded it from on xda. But now that u mention it, I am the idiot because it was a kernel for a desire and not desire hd. So I'm assuming losing my data was better than bricking the phone by installing wrong kernel? I'm trying to find a good kernel to run on my inspire 4g with CoreDroid v8.1 any recommendations besides the one it comes with?
If u haven't guessed im fairly new at this android stuff. But learning every day, case in point. Lol

Some great kernel makers to look into would be, and this is not all of them, klquicksall kernels, LorD ClockaN Lordmod kernels, m-deejay Unity kernels, etc. Just make sure you use the correct kernel for the type of rom that you are using, whether it is an AOSP rom or a Sense rom.

Don't use rom manager aka rom mangler!!! Thanks management!!!

Thanks management
SORRY luc or any mod that will delete this lol just going though the recent threads and no matter what we say they always seem to install it!!!
close or delete at your leasure
please use krylons cwm final
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1099374
if you installed rom manager delete it and take the update.zip from krylons thread and put it to the root of your sd card..
*Note*
Newer kernels dont require this as cwm is built directly into the kernel..

If you installed it and didn't use it, no problem.
If you used it to 'install', then you earned a one way trip to using Odin to get everything back.
Raver, if you don't mind could you please make the title have capital letters and not lowercase like it does. There is no reason for it other than everytime I open the forum, it bugs me. Also, what is up with the "bold" html command ""?
I wonder what goes through other peoples heads when they decide hey I'm going to root my phone and install a custom Rom. I mean the first thing I did was a Google search on how to root SGS4G. That lead me to XDA. Then I found the actual SGS4G forum and began searching for guides. This was the same process for my MT3G and my G1. I don't understand why people would just grab Rom manager and assume it's a cure all. Boggles the mind.

that works out fine if the first thing you get led to is xda, but if you are unlucky like me then you end up at joe schmoe's tech blog or something similar and they tell you that any android phone can be "hacked" with superoneclick and rom manager. thats where the true issue lies, imo: that not the sites state the same info and most of that is wrong.
Thanks raver!

+1 Sure there were multiple sites related to the subject, which is why you take a little bit of time to examine more than one. I know I didn't just click the first option and run with it.
This post got me thinking. We have the SGS4G Bible but apparently it can be a little overwhelming and too much information for some people to digest before they start modding their phones.
Keeping the biblical theme maybe a simplified "SGS4G TEN COMMANDMENTS" that contain the ten most common questions and answers, noob mistakes, and does and don'ts in one place. Simple, easy to read, and easy to refer people to. For example...
Commandment 1: DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER...EVER!
Commandment 2: DO NOT FLASH VIBRANT ROMS....EVER! - THE SGS4G IS NOT A VIBRANT!
etc, etc....you get the idea.
Any thoughts?

New kernel won't boot
Hi, I just rooted my phone w/the latest CM (7.1.0.1) and I tried to install a new kernel using the above steps, and every one I try gives me the kernel boot screen, and then gets stuck at a blank screen. It lights up when I touch the screen, but nothing else.
Thankfully I did a NANDROID backup, got back into cm. But still can't figure out what's wrong.
BTW, CM7 running 2.3.7. Have also tried data wipe of OS, w/reinstall of CM, then flashed kernel, but still no luck. Always get stuck at blank screen after kernel boot.
also, I tried both morfic's Trinity kernel (both of them) and faux, can't seem to get anything different.
Suggestions?

Uh, guys, you're missing one thing. He's way back on the stable release. I found this out the same way a while back. The Kernels are based of a newer source than the ROM he's running and thus incompatible.
OP: grab Titanium back up and My Backup Root. Use titanium to back up your apps and accompanying data, for safety's sake don't use it to back up system data at this point, since there's going to be a good number of differences between your current ROM and the one I'm going to PM you. I used the stable build on the cm site, which lists on my phone as CM7.1.0.1-G2x. The Kernel Version says it's 2.6.32.45-cyanogenmod. The faux kernel also found on xda-dev forum for the g2x seems to be for cm7 gb, and in any case I tried both that I found, uv and sv. Still stuck.

Come on OP, maybe you can at least remember some tiny detail of the link I posted. As I stated before: Euroskank nightlies. Google it, ask around about it. For everyone: As the quoted member points out, the OP has how many posts and joined when? Also, what has he posted? The title of this thread is nonsensical, obviously he doesn't know what a kernel is or he wouldn't be asking about how to "uninstall" one.
Now, I post what and where, say what, and speak how?
Period.
Oh, and OP, what was your magical "fix" that you say worked but only state that "it" worked? Others may (and do) want to know.

The Trinity Kernel found on Morfic's website derkernel is made for CM7 (GB)
I used the stable build on the cm site, which lists on my phone as CM7.1.0.1-G2x. The Kernel Version says it's 2.6.32.45-cyanogenmod. The faux kernel also found on xda-dev forum for the g2x seems to be for cm7 gb, and in any case I tried both that I found, uv and sv. Still stuck.
Any help would be nice. Oh, and in case you haven't figured it out yet, I'm a n00b.

Those kernels are only compatible with nightly 173ish plus. Get off the stable build and grab a nightly, Hellfire Phoenix, or any other newer cm7 based rom. The euroskank nightlys are nice

Come on OP, maybe you can at least remember some tiny detail of the link I posted. As I stated before: Euroskank nightlies. Google it, ask around about it. Why you mad? First of all my post isn't even asking for a "fix". And you can see I'm a new member so why would I trust a link that has the phrase "euroskank" in it? How am I supposed to know that's a trusted link if I'm new?

I looked again and I don't see where I'm asking for a "fix" of any sort...

Euroskank roms are very reliable. Some of us use them and since they are not in this forum the user pm you the link. Check it out. Just be careful calling people out next time.

so far no good it flashed but i got stuck on the cyanogen circle..... it may have been my fault for more than one reason
i DID NOT wipe cache, cause i was on magicmod and tried to just upgrade, prob the culprit
recovery locked up on me directly after i opened justinbeanaroma to install inverted g apps, but i didnt reboot first, so could have been that
i installed through cm10 recovery, and there was no recovery after i installed this rom, so i think the data files left from no wipe may have either messed with this cm10 recovery, or this one doesnt have one
i had to rds back to 2.3.6 and just got back to leak 1
im gonna root real quick and install through bootstrap and ill let u guys know whats up
hashcodes name is on this tho, so i think i messed up, and i think this might still work....
edit..... gotta charge up a bit first in case i gotta rds back again lol
hope you will success! waiting for your reply.
ok guys im stupid.... see the "kexec log" at the top? this is for safestrap, explains y theres no recovery and y im stuk on the cyanogen screen again.....
im gonna re rds again and try this with safestrap, only cause theres like 80 roms on this site lol
ill keep u guys updated

ok folks after a bunch of crap, feeling like a noob for a few hours, then cunsulting with the master of masters mr jimbridgman (next time i think of him or someone smarter than me first.... lol) heres the deal....
these roms are a test so to speak, and as far as i know none of them work, not cause they are faulty, but because kexec is not working properly on our phones, you can install it, you can wipe install and everything else really cool in a custom recovery, but the clincher is, when you try to boot the "safe system" the phone just hangs on a black screen.....
however.....
as a recovery tool only, safestrap isnt bad lol...
so the greatest question of all, can we port some of these to run without safestrap.... ill look into it.... must be possible...

It is possible, if you include kexec and the kernel files in the right location in the ROM that is built from this, then the phone will boot fully, and do a soft reset with the new kernel. I am not too sure that even that will work well. I have not had much luck with kexec in ICS yet. I had it working on GB and even was able to boot my early CM7 builds, but after an update in MAY that stopped working too. So.... good luck.

edit: ok so this time it made it through "android is upgrading, then it soft booted.... and got stuck at the cyanogenmod splash screen.... im close i can feel it lol
hey daavis, i had sent a mail asking whether this is in fact for the A2.. Got this reply..
Aniruddha:
My apologies for not having the appropriate threads set up ahead of time. CrackFlasher is still quite new, and the three users that moderate it, all have very busy schedules.
Please find the below threads that deal with your device. And yes, this is for the Atrix 2.
I believe you will need to use SafeStrap developed by Hashcode to flash these Roms, as for we just build them from source, but do not have a valid device to physically test on.
These Roms are development Roms, as in stock [branch] compile from source. Feel free to use these Roms as a base for Custom Rom Development. We would love to see your work, or other's, on CrackFlasher.com.
http://www.crackflasher.com/forumdisplay.php?47-Atrix-2-Development
Thanks again, and feel free to become a member and join the community. It's a slow building one, but we all do have one thing in common. We're all CrackFlashers.
Have a good day.

no, not yet, these build are not ready for users. Someone set these up for auto-builds, that works with hashcode. Hashcode said that they do not work as of yet. I would not use these or even try unless you have some dev experience.

im about to give her another whack, after finally ( fedora 17 doesnt speak well with my video card, ubuntu [eh' i know noob build, but lets face it it runs nice and has tons of documentation] decided it didnt like my wireless card [ ok so it decided to fail installing the firmware and after hours explained to me what was wrong] ) getting my m1330 back together, and running effin wicked fast again, i need to know what files i need to play with to get my little cm build booting....
jim what would you expect was the culprit if she soft boots after building any cache? the log wont show anything through cm recovery, is there a log i can pull through adb or something that will bring a beacon of light to my daavviscm10build dreariness?
