[Q] flashed kernel and sd card wiped out?? - HTC Inspire 4G

OK I've flashed a few kernels trying to find 1 I like. never had a problem. few none ago I try a new one (Tristan) and it apparently it didn't work cause the previous lordmod one is still in place. BUT all the info, data music, apps and photos on my SD card are/is gone. just poof, vanished. Wtf is that all about. needless to say I'm quite pissed cause all photos of my kids are gone.
any ideas on Wtf could have happened? I cleared dalvik cache as always.

where did you download this 'tristan' kernel? i would check the script in it to see what it actually does when installing the kernel.
sounds like someone put a line in the script to format /mnt/sdcard
this is one of the reasons everyone here should understand what happens when you flash something. understanding the workings could save you from stuff like this.

+1 What Pirateghost stated. I happened to do a search out of curiosity and the only Tristan kernel threads that I found were all specific to the HTC Desire. This is not the same phone that we have, (Inspire/Desire HD).
If your card was formatted, you may want to try using a card reader and going through a Windows or Mac recovery program that you can install. The program may be able to recover most or some of your data. No guarantees though that it will work.

Downloaded it from on xda. But now that u mention it, I am the idiot because it was a kernel for a desire and not desire hd. So I'm assuming losing my data was better than bricking the phone by installing wrong kernel? I'm trying to find a good kernel to run on my inspire 4g with CoreDroid v8.1 any recommendations besides the one it comes with?
If u haven't guessed im fairly new at this android stuff. But learning every day, case in point. Lol
Thanks

I'm a unity kernal guy. I have tried a few and I love it. Unity v9 is the current one. It's good stuff.
Also check out www.thefreecountry.com They have some free recovery programs that can help you get your pics back.

Some great kernel makers to look into would be, and this is not all of them, klquicksall kernels, LorD ClockaN Lordmod kernels, m-deejay Unity kernels, etc. Just make sure you use the correct kernel for the type of rom that you are using, whether it is an AOSP rom or a Sense rom.

Ugh thank you was sweating bullets for a minute
Im guessing thats not the right way to remove ATT stock apps? lol I been browsing forums but can find nothing for HTC Inspire 4G
If your not to sure what you should or shouldn't delete, then the best thing for you would be to just flash a stock rooted rom. Like clearD, tcp, or dilligaf.
Titanium backup is the right way. Why don't you try twopumpchump optimized stock Rom in the development section. We're very helpful over there and will walk you through it. You can flash a ROM that already has the bloat removed.

I was attempting to remove the blockbuster app lol
Im kinda nervous to flash roms, I spent 3 hours last night reading/prepping myself for the root, was so nervous of a brick (btw new android user came from iphone) I have a buddy who had a nexus he bricked trying to flash the cryageon rom which is a well trusted rom. Just really scared >.>
Plus will flashing a rom remove contacts ect?
It's not as hard as you think. Take your time though. Best to do your research. Check out the Rom I suggested though and drop in if you have any questions.

As long as you have them saved on your sim no. Personal data yes. Apps not if you back them up. Make a nandroid back up before flashing. All you have to do is download the rom, place it on your sd card. Then boot into recovery install zip from sd card, choose zip from sd card, pick the rom select yes. You just flashed a rom.. As far as I know no one has completely bricked their inspire, even the people who have had corrupted boot loaders have been able to recover.

Honestly, I haven't had a chance to sit down at my desktop and try and mess around with it, college has taken up a lot of my time. I will say its a lot more complex then people think it is. It makes me really appreciate the people who bake roms and make themes.
I will probably sit down this weekend try tweeking a few things, and hopefully get it to work with out boot looping. Makes me wish some one lived around here that could teach me a few things I am a visual learner. I will get one working though .

Hello came over from the Captivate

Ok jumped ship from the Captivate to the Inspire.
So far am liking the phone.
I want to root it and rom. I saw the sticky in the general section and want to ask is that the best place to start?
Captivate was fairly easy to mess with. Reading a bit seems the inspire is a bit more tricky. I just want to make sure that I don't brick it lol. I want to make sure I can get it back to stock if need be.
If this should have been in Q&A then mod please move it. Figured I would introduce myself and get pointed in the correct direction. No sense making useless posts.

Welcome fellow ex-Captivate owner. Your instints are spot-on. That sticky is THE best place to start. Everything you need is in that thread, in terms of info and links to rooting methods, etc.
As a former Captivate owner, the inspire is not "one-clickable,",like the Captivate, and A LOT of people get tripped-up on the rooting process. It's more involved, but that's just how it is. The advantages this phone has over the Captivate make it worth it.
What about drivers. I downloaded some but not sure how or if I need to install them.
For computer drivers go to the official htc website and download and install the ones for the inspire.Once installed, you can delete htc sync since it isn't that useful anyways and can interfere with computer to phone communications.
Now you should be fine on drivers.

Well I appreciate that response but can you point me too some. I would like a GB rom and not sure what the difference is between Sense 2.1 and Sense 3.0. I gather getting a sense 3.0 is the way to go.
I am currently using Leedroid GB right now.
If I want to flash another rom what is the procedure for that? On the Cappy I would flash back to a stock rom then flash the new rom. Is that similar here or what?
From experience it is best to do a backup of apps and contacts and do a full wipe from recovery
1- wipe data / factory reset
2- mounts and storage - format system
3- advanced - wipe Dalvik Cache
4- Install Rom and add-ons
when going between ROMs for the inspire it is best to do this. Only when upgrading to a new release of a ROM you can just flash over the top of it and sometimes that gets sticky.

Thanks much. Those 3 steps are what flashing to stock with Odin is on a Cappy. So I now know what to do on the Inspire.
Bit different animal the Inspire then the Cappy. So far am liking it a bit better. Sense is much nicer then touchwiz but I removed touchwiz and replaced with launcher pro about 2hrs after first getting the Cappy.
One issue I get is the clock/weather widget reports the temp in Celsius how can that be changed?

when switching between ext3 and ext4 roms you need to add
3.5 mount /system & /data
might as well be in the habit.
I personally like sense 3.0, but the sense 2.x are a lot more stable with less hiccups.
i know its a pain, but please read the threads. by page 200 you will know the answers to all the irritating questions people just keep asking over and over and over. but keep on reading because there will be little gems here and there.
that 3-4 hours reading up on a particular rom will come in handy when you flash and know what to expect, common issues and how to deal with them. that 3-4 hours will keep you from having wait a day to be acknowledged with a lovely "search the thread" or "read the OP" response.
but hopefully you rooted your captivate, know to read up first, seach second, reread, search again and then ask. and welcome to the inspire!
I had my Captivate rooted and rom'd about 2 weeks after I got it. So yeah I am a flasher.
I know what to expect if something goes wrong and usually could get out of it with my cappy. I never had to use a jig or even buy one. I seemed have good results with anything I did on that phone. Finally found a nice GB rom for it great battery life.
Reading through the threads I do do that but there is so much bs and off topic stuff in some of these threads it gets tiresome to paw through 200+ pages to find something. I suck at searching on forums always get non related stuff.
I hear ya. I am not a noob at this just cautious and like to ask questions before doing things.
I'm also a Captivate to Inspire person. I agree that things look like they were a lot easier on the Captivate. I'm very nervous that I'll break something. The phone seems to work fine stock though.

You're not going to break anything. It might LOOK like you did, but as long as the phone at least starts to boot up, even if it appears stuck, it's fixable.
And the phone does work great stock, compared to a stock captivate, it just works even better with a custom ROM, as most will improve the battery life significantly, if properly flashed, and absent of any rogue battery-draining apps that are installed by the owner of the phone.

So my Sensation 4g is only my 2nd Android phone... G2 being the first and i've decided to start modding this one. Last night I followed the 4 steps to get the phone switched to s-off and then rooted. I'm looking into a new rom for the phone. I like all the videos and stuff i see for CM7 but it seems like it may be a min for that to drop a release. Do you guys have anything else you suggest? Also any particular app's? I've instated Bloat Freezer and a couple others to try and trim the HTC Sense 3.0 fat. Thank you in advance

Do I need TI back up if I already have CWM?
If you dont want all the nice graphics from Sense roms go with No-sense like the other person suggested. If you like Sense, then you can try any rom out there. I really like this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098849
I was using CM roms on all my other phones, but I guess porting it to this phone is taking a little longer and not everything is working properly.
There is a difference between TI Backup and CWM. CWM will back up the complete rom with all your setting and apps, TI back up will back up your apps with data and when you jump from ROM to ROM you can restore with TI back up all your apps with data just like you had them before flashing another ROM.
I would recommend getting the paid version of TI backup, the one click install saves you a lot of time.
Welcome to Android modding.

TI Backup can backup all your app+system data, so that if/when you install a new ROM you can restore your apps and any data you want to. CWM is good for essentially saving an entire ROM, but it can't help with restoring apps+data onto a new ROM.

You really can't go wrong around here. So many great devs. As long as you're careful you can try out all of their releases. Right now I'm on InsertCoin 2.2.2 on the stock kernel and it's perfect.
It's probably not needed right now, but you might end up picking up Root Explorer someday for the occasional dev-recommended file edit.

[Q] Can't flash Custom kernels on NEXUS S 4g

Noob question??
I've had the HTC Evo 4G for the last month and a half, and before I even purchased it, after talks with old friends of Jailbroken iPhones I had decided I was going to jump into modding headfirst when I got my smartphone, and since that day I've flashed, downloaded, backed up, and restored more things than I could count, learned how to swamp myself out of bricks, learned which kernels sucked and which ones didn't, etc...all the typical XDA stuff.
My girlfriend has a Nexus S 4G that she got 2 weeks afterward, and she has absolutely no interested in the development side of the phone, she wouldn't learn what AOSP meant if you paid her a dollar, but she wants her phone to be awesome. I am trying. HOWEVER...I haven't found success flashing a kernel over any custom rom on her phone YET! I have flashed the stable CyanogenMod7.1 as well as assorted nightly builds, MIUI, the one and only sense rom the Nexus can run properly, and that's all went over fine, but every kernel i've attempted flashing thusfar (Trinity, TalonAce, v7 snap kernel, Nexus Netarchy kernel, and a few others) have either stuck me at a splashscreen that wiping the dalvik and cache partition would not fix, or locked me at the initial black screen with the google logo and lock underneath for indescriminate amounts of time...essentially a brick, not a bootloop. This is the first time i've felt I am truly at a point where no amount of research and reading will be able to empower me to help myself so...help a n00b out here?? Am I doing something wrong??
She is currently running a themed MIUI build 110280 with the stock kernel. Anybody run into this problem or one similar yet? I looked and looked for a thread and found nothing..

flash the rom, flash the gapps(if needed), flash the kernel, then boot. be sure its a latest rom build, because most of the kernels are updated to support the latest android versions. also, if it doesnt boot, sometimes pulling the battery for 3 minutes then sticking it back in and booting helps. if that doesnt work, try flashing the rom and gapps, booting, then back into recovery to flash the kernel separately. dont use rom manager, flash in recovery.

try this kernel, its one of my favorites. and its miui compatable http://morfic.euroskank.com/simka/TEUV-S22-04102011.zip
its underclocked at 880mhz, undervolted for great batter life, and the gpu/bus is overclocked to 220mhz(10%) for performance. this little 880mhz kernel runs like its overclocked to 1.2ghz.

Maybe you missed the "impatient" part in the bump, whereas my newness kept my post about the recovery from going through (only 1 per 5 minutes, apparently...didn't even notice). Anyone else that actually went through this problem wanna give it a shot?
@esteway
Never been a troll a day in my life. I've been on xda constantly for the last month seems like, but I've never even been inclinated to join this forum, let alone troll in it. And now the one time I need help no one else either has the problem or knows how to fix it. My recovery makes no difference whatsoever, if I had a modded recovery that isn't either clockwork or amon ra like my cousin has (although I don't know how in the world he got it) my problem still remains. If you can't help me, beat it. You're the one trolling, you weren't even in our conversation.
Youre the one saying u can post the pic so.... prove it. As for your problem I never herd of that issue.

it could be an amon ra recovery that someone ported or built from source, thats possible. it is open sourced, and most recoveries are based on it. but if it is, id flash another recovery because the one you have would be out of date. since you havent tried that, you should try. both clockwork and twrp recoveries are good.

ANYTHING is possible on these phones if given enough time and attention, and I'd assume anyone who frequents these forums as often as either of you do should know that much, so thank you simms. I've seen a modded or black market version of almost every app i've ever downloaded lol I don't say no to anything being possible in android userspace
Anyway, twrp? I've never heard of that one before. Is it more fully functional than clockwork? I'll be trying it out. I'll try ANYTHING out, I just want this to go away...I feel like the only one who has ever run into this problem
Here's the tread to twrp http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1196500
It is a bit different than clockworkmod mod but give it a try see if it fixes your problem.

I'm getting the very same thing (no matter what ROM/Kernel/Wipe-Cache-Then-Flash combo I try, nothing gets past the Google splash). I'll try that too.

[ROM]-Stock 1.55.531.3 Rooted, Deodex -- REMOVED DUE TO KANG :O

KANG - To steal or a stolen code when referring to programming. Also can refer to leaked coding.
Due to the copious amounts of kanging that now happens in regards to android development I will be pulling all of my links and changing the original posts with this. If you would like to use my roms please feel free to find the kanged version elsewhere.
For inspiring developers, rtfm or ask someone who knows what they are doing before you steal someone elses work, look at someones code and get the general idea. If you port or use something as a base, credit that person. Do not just link back to the thread where you got it from. My email is [email protected] so feel free to ask questions, if I know the answers I will be willing to assist.
I don't wish to call anyone out but I will say there are a few roms, specifically for MT4G Slide that have been kanged. One of which was taken from me, another was a kanged version of CM7 which was just the Settings.apk SettingsProvider.apk and Launcher.apk replaced. CM7 is framework edits, not just a list of apps an entire team works on. You cannot just replace apps in CyanogenMod and expect it to work thus the reason some parts of the Settings.apk force close. Its not hard to be an idiot but its even easier to spot bull**** work, do yourselves a favor, leave xda, leave rootzwiki, leave whatever thread you are on and learn from people who know what the fk they're doing.
If my email fills with hate mail, then fine, at least what I did I feel was right and do not have to worry about my development being taken and rebadged, if I'm out of line then have a moderator delete and close my thread. Thanks!
Mainly because we are looking for s-off... Good work though
rooted 1.55.531.3 with clockwork recovery and SU
Thanks man, i didnt feel like deodexing incase i wanted to start making changes ..hopefully with this stock build you have the cobwebs shook off and we can get cracking

It's the bone stock myTouch ROM, there should be screen shots and videos of it every where on Google. Since It's stock only, no mods us myTouch users already know what to expect it to look like

Does this have the insecure boot.img? What about the hboot version?
I'm currently unlocked and s-off, running UndeadK9's "stock" deodexed/rooted/optimized R2 release ROM. I don't want to lose s-off or root, but I like having a more "stock" rom as this is my only phone.

I cant edit the build prop at all. If I do it won't boot. Does this have unsecure boot.img by chance?

What are you trying to edit, and to what? I'm almost sure the boot.img is unsecured
#edit#
I just used root explorer and changed my VM heap and rebooted fine

I know Daniel60104's ROM does have the unsecure boot.img, not sure on this one.
On a side note, has anyone tried flashing the radio update that accompanied this release? I know that radio is a no-go for older ROMS, but since it was designed with this release, no word yet how it works with a rooted ROM.
Anyone noticed battery life improvement on this stock version? I've been using this for a week now and I can say there's a big difference compare to the older version. I am using the non-debloat (stock). Another thing is I have yet to experience the random warm battery issue that I've been experiencing from older stock based roms.

I have noticed much better battery performance with this stock ROM, as well. I'm using Daniel's stock, rooted ROM, and I ran Bloater to take out the things I didn't want (like TMobileTV, TeleNAV, QIK). This ROM runs very quick, smooth. I'm still wondering about the newer radio, though I'm hesitant to flash it because I can't afford to screw up this phone. This is my ONLY phone, it has to work.

As long as the Md5 matches your safe, just follow the instructions one at a time, like read all the way through them once and make sure you understand the steps, then go back and start the process, that's it the phone handles the rest...BUT its still scary I understand that, Hell I've had my own EVO Shift ROM for about 10 months and i still use the stock 2.2 radio on that phone

Given that I'm running 1.55.531.3, S-OFF and rooted, with the original stock radio, and everything is working splendidly (wi-fi, bluetooth, camera, gps, etc.), I'm not gonna mess with it for now.
I'm interested to see what HTC comes out with since they halted the 1.55.531.3 OTA update due to "performance issues". When they restart, I wonder if it will be a different version, for instance.

Well them performance issues can and will be addressed asap, its all about tweaking the ROM, we had major Sense reloads on the evo shift so we learned to allocate more memory here rather than there, and once a ROM was odexed/scripted/opted they flat out flew.
When it comes to the radio on my DoubleShot i will probably never change the radio cause if it aint broke dont fix it
