Ok I am sure I am not the only one that watched the live release of the Galaxy Nexus and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Being that the Sensation is the flagship device for HTC and that HTC is obligated to update their devices for 18 months. Not to mention that ICS is optimized for dual core devices, the Sensation will get a official update . The o.ly true question is when will the Sensation get this update. Now all of us here on XDA know we will probably get a unofficial update via a custom Android 4.0 ROM from Cyanogen Mod or another AOSP team.
So if anyone out there gets a update avaliable notification or finds a custom Android 4.0 ROM for the Sensation please post it here.

Ok it has been 24 hours now sense the start of the live Samsung and Google event yesterday, So lets review what has become available so far.
We have ICS wallpapers via XDA Member matd20012001.
We have the Roboto font via XDA Senior Member Thyrus.
We have a ICS System Dump and ICS Data Folder via XDA Recognized Developer JoelZ9614.
We have the System App dump of ICS via XDA TV Personality azrienoch. He find them on My Droid World forums via p3droid.
And we have the Android 4.0 Platform SDK via the Google Android developers.
First SDK port to the HTC G2 (It is booting but lots of bugs) and I beleive the very first port to any device via XDA Senior Member siulmagic. Also check out the ICS Porting guide by Siulmagic.
Now I may have missed something or need to add extra credits to sources so please let me know if so.

HTC says they will be releasing information in the coming weeks on what devices and when the devices will get an update. Thanks to XDA Senior Member tinky1 for the info.
Looks like ICS does support the soft key hardware buttons for older devices. Ckeck out what My Droid World forums member Beezy says about them. Engadget.com, sorry for being late adding this.
Still have support for the buttons,really google couldn't take that out then every phone mf would have to code them back in and updates would take years then.lol

Yet another statement from a Google saying that ICS will be part of the AOSP. This via XDA Senior Member stonew5082. But from the statement it appears we all will have to wait at least until the Galaxy Nexus is available, if not more devices, to the public as it says the the following.

Ok this was posted yesterday and I messed it, it is in the HTC HD2 Android development forum. This is info pretty much just for devs but still very useful, it was posted by XDA Senior Member vegaman. Also it seems the HTC HD2 is getting a little ICS love as there is also a booting alpha SDK port for the HTC HD2. Also for any devs or people that want to give it a try here is a place to download a Galaxy Nexus system dump, posted by XDA Seniort Member Proz00. I do not know if it is the same downloads I linked to in my "Fist 24" above or not but I thought it worth linking to. (Confirmed that is just a SDK system dump)

I decided to see just how many devices have a bootable ICS SDK port. We know the HTC Nexus one, the Samsung Nexus S, Samsung Nexus S 4G, and the HTC HD2 have one it looks like the HTC G2/Desire Z, the HTC Desire, the HTC Droid Incredible, the HTC Desire HD, the HTC EVO Shift 4G, the HTC Droid Incredible 2,the Samsung Infuse 4G,and the XPERIA X10 all have a bootable SDK port. (Whoooo that was more work than i had counted on, glad I am done) I am not 100% sure about that last one booting but it is some real dev work going on on it. Now i know all of these are SDK ports and will never ever be able to be used as a daily driver. But this gives the devs a chance to get their feet wet with ICS and hopefully make it easier for the devs to make some true ASOP ROMs when the source code is released by Google. Thus this is why I went through and found each one, this whay the devs for the Sensation can have a central location to find all the threads on the ICS ports.

So I have been reading and this is what I have come up with. The Nexus One devs have got all of the following working, touch screen (no cursor anymore), phone calls (no audio though), wireless data, SMS, Wifi, and the proximity sensor.
The Nexus S port is booting but that is it really.
Beezy and the devs over at My Droid World forums are making god progress with the SDK port for the Nexus S 4G. They have they following working, touch screen, data (no 4G), SMS, MMS, WiFi, and USB (not sure if it is USB mass storage or just USB). It may be more but there is no real full run down of all that is working. You can go here to watch the video on the last version of the ROM. It appears to be stable enough to use as a daily driver, who would have thought. Here is a video of the great port.
I personally tested the port for the HD2 and to put it nice it boots up and that is it, I am sure that will change though.
The devs working on the HTC Desire have got the following working, touchscreen, SD card, and hardware buttons. Here is a video of it.
The HTC Droid Incredible port is pretty much the same as the the HTC HD2.
The HTC Desire HD port is booting but that is pretty much it.
The HTC Evo Shift 4G port has the the following working, phone (without audio), data, and orientation.
The HTC Droid Incredible 2 port is booting but that is it.
The Samsung Infuse 4G port is booting but that is it and the thread has been closed.
The XPERIA X10 port is booting and that is it too.
So as you can see only the Nexus devices are progressing right now with a usable port. I find that a little curious, what about you?

Just for all of you that have not seen the story on the XDA Portal you might want to give it a good read. The story is on the Nexus One but I think it is worth reading as it shows that even though a device can clearly run the new Android 4.0.1 Ice Cream Sandwich, it does not necessary mean it will get the update. Google can you say, "This is our attempt to make you by a new device, and push the agenda of the OEMs." There is a link to the full original article in the story in the Portal.
It may be nothing, but I may have come across something very interesting. The Nexus S has a pretty good ICS port right now, but is it a port or is it a leaked early version of ICS made to run on the Nexus S for testing that has been modded? I will let you make that decision for yourself. Go here and have a read of post #93-#97. Also check out the quote in post #97 as it relates back to the Nexus One not getting a official update.

I really can not believe I messed this as it was posted on the 19th. But then again the Galaxy Nexus forums are still very new and I have had no real reason to check them out. Anyway XDA Senior Member blunden gives a general explanation to why the ICS SDK dump and the ICS app dumps can not be deodexed with the current smali/baksmali will not work. But he says he got a working baksmali.jar. He also gives links to download deodexed framwork and deodexed apps. Go to here to check out the post.
Looks like Samsung (or Sammy as some call them) has made a official statement on their plans for updating their Galaxy devices. Thanks again to XDA Senior Member Tinky 1 for the info, the link is direct to the source. Hope you can use Google translate.

It looks like there is a alleged dump from the Galaxy Nexus. Now this is suppose to be a early version and not the final release version of ICS. Me personally I am holding my opinion on what this is for right now as I have seen it and I am not convinced just yet. Oh yeah this was actually posted yesterday, but i just now got around to posting it here. Sorry I have been busy. Thanks to XDA Senior Member DroidRC1 and XDA Senior Member bonesy for the heads up.

Engadget has posted a article on what devices they can confirm are going to get a official ICS upgrade. The Sensation is not listed under the HTC section as of now, but the article says"Keep checking back here from time to time, as we'll continue to update the list." So kepp a check there, I know I will. Thanks to XDA Senior Member leeskywalker for the heads up on the article.

HTC Official announcment
It appears HTC has announced that the Sensation along with several other HTC devices will be getting an official ICS upgrade. They used Facebook as their platform to announce this information which really burns my butt cause I personally can not stand face book and despise it. Anyway this is great news as it confirms mine and several other peoples thoughts about the Sensation getting an official upgrade. But one down side of the announcement is that the update will be sometime in early 2012. Now to me early means with in the first 3 months, but to HTC it could mean with in the first 6 months. Thanks to XDA Senior Member illuminarias for posting the link here in the thread. Also thanks to XDA Senior Member austendale9 as it seems he had started a thread with the link a little before illuminarias posted the link here in this thread.

Well even though it is just the Android 4.0.1 version that is on the Galaxy Nexus. Google has released the Source code for ICS today, They also released the previousely unreleased Honeycomb Source code too. Google says they really want people to focus on development for ICS though. And that source for more devices will be filming soon.
I'm just not sure what they'll do with our hardware buttons. It would suck to lose their functionality and have to lose screen real estate or the new on-screen buttons. hopefully there's a way to get rid of the new ones and have ICS use the hardware ones.
Other than that, safe to say a custom rom becomes available here before HTC gets around to releasing it.
geee uhmm i wonder why all the devs are so quiet? maybe a released sdk somewhere?

Yeah the thing about ICS using virtual compactive buttons does pose somewhat of a question if they will be in a ROM for the Sensation. Bit in my opinion and logical thinking on this is that they will make all updates for pre ICS devices use the existing soft keys and not vertual keys because if not that would leave the soft keys useless I highly doubt the OEMs will allow because it would make their devices look bad. Plus as you say it will take up screen real estate and that is not good. Plus I am not sure if the hardware soft keys can be done away with without causing some unwanted problems. So I say the existing hardware buttons will be used in ICS but we still might have to have the onscreen button to bring up the multitasking thumbnails as I don't know if you can make the search hardware button function for both buttons.

Yrs the SDK is avaliable right now so you are probably right.
Customization mate! Even if 4.0 has built in buttons other phones besides sensation uses kapa buttons. Whereas google would have had to be shooting heroine through the pupil if the didn't took that in consideration.

Not meaning to be the downer, but I'm pretty sure I can safely say you won't be seeing an ICS update from HTC for many, many months. And for CM9? I'm sure that will be a couple of months too.
Based on previous experiences with several phones.

Hey, you know that feeling in MMORPG's where you reach the highest level and all of a sudden the game isn't as fun anymore because you have nothing to work towards? And no matter how many more monsters you killed or quests you did, you would no longer level up because the EXP is wasted?
ICS is like extending that soft level cap so we can look forward to things in the future. Might not come today, might not come next week. Might not even be for another month or so. But it's something to look forward to. And I'm happy with that.

My guess is we will be able to use the existing buttons on our phones. Home = home. Menu = multi tasking. Back = back... Just my guess

From what I've read ICS gives devs the option to do away with hardware buttons, so it won't be a problem. ICS can use either.

Yeah Jellybean is suppose to have what has been labeled as "Game Changing Stuff" in it. And CM ROMe are already top notch ROMs so when the CM team finally get a hold of Jellybean it is truly no telling what will be the out come.
But we are really getting ahead of ourselfs here cause Jellybean has not been officially adopted as the name for the next Android version and ICS was just released last night and it is only at 4.0 right now so it is still plenty of room for more growth with ICS. Plus Google has said nothing yet about ICS being open sourced yet. So if Google does the same with ICS as they did with Honeycomb then we may never see a CM ICS ROM.

As reports point out, the updates will arrive by 2nd quarter (beginning April) of 2012 and it is again going to be Samsung devices which will get these updates first. The official word from Samsung is that the six devices to get the update first will be Galaxy S II, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, Galaxy Tab 7.7, Galaxy Tab 8.9 and Galaxy Tab 10.1 and all of these devices except Galaxy Note (which is coming to India on 2nd November) are already available in India.
Samsung has also said that since it had been working closely with Google on ICS, they expected to beat competitors to the market with upgrades for existing devices.
HTC has also publicly announced the plans for the updates, but it is expected to be late to the party as their phones are heavily modified version of Android and therefore will take more time to include their Sense user interface into the new updates. It will be a more uphill task since some of the features that were available only through Sense UI are now part of Android 4.0 by default.

And to think I actually left my device S-on and unrooted in hopes of getting this update before Christmas. Shame on me.
As soon as we get CM7 stable, I'm done with stock. Done with HTC Sense. Done with waiting for HTC and T-Mobile to get us updates (I know I'm late to the party )

Just because they call it an alpha doesn't mean it's buggy or laggy.I think it runs very well like the nightlies. I am confident that we'll have CM9 running on our phones long before HTC deigns to give us their Sensified interpretation of ICS.
I remember the Galaxy S situation last year......
Same phone as NEXUS S , but the updato to Gingerbread (released in mid dicember) is arrived in May

How long does it take to turn source code into a stable ROM? I'm not a programmer or developer so I have no idea lol.
I'm gonna stick with my sensation, but I'm scared to unroot and flash haha.

Interesting, that may cost HTC some sales if other phones will get similar features to Sense.

htc should just send ICS for sensation..then after 3 months bring Sense 4.0
Based on past experience, HTC won't release an update until a few months after a new flagship device shipped with a new Android version is launched.
So let's say HTC announce a ICS flagship device in late Dec or early Jan, which will be shipped earliest a month after that. Say early Feb. Add two months to it, April sounds plausible.
As soon as ICS source code is released, probably within days you will start seeing custom ICS roms popping up here. Most of which will be crappy and unstable (although everyone will claim "lighting fast! Super stable!" in their thread title). I would say a month after ICS source code being released, quality ROMs will start rolling out.

I hate the break the bad news to you, but the Sensation is now officially the "red headed step child" for both HTC and the carriers around the globe. It was intended to be the flagship Android device when it was released last June, but HORRIBLE quality control lead to massive shipments of faulty devices. HTC still won't admit the issue, although the carriers now openly mention it and will even offer you an LG or Samsung device as a replacement no matter how long you have had your Sensation. With the new Nexus device about to ship, and a handful of other ICS devices on the way, HTC is in a world of hurt. They didn't get awarded the contract for the Nexus phone and the Motorola/Google merger is going to crush their bottom line. Let's also not forget about the snooping software HTC "mistakenly" installed on this phone, which they have just started rolling out updates to remove. In summary, the Sensation was intended to be a market leader. Due to multiple internal/external issues at HTC that never happened, and now they (HTC) are trying to play catch up. The other issue is that HTC has newer phones on the market which have pushed the Sensation to the back of the line when it comes to upgrades. The Sensation is caught in the middle of the newer phones who are competing against the newest version of Android. Sure, ICS will likely come out for the Sensation by Spring/Summer, but at that point the phone will be a year old and nobody will care.....

and to add to that, haven't you learned that HTC is like a brick itself? like the unlocked bootloader they promised? so many people asking them about that and trying to tell them stuff, but they decided to play by their book and it just ended up xda devs coming up with a different way to unlock the bootloader. so, don't trust them, they put some crazy stuff on your phone and won't tell you that they bugged your phone for some unknown reason. thats why there's xda-developers
i dont think it will be that late ,january at the latest we should have something, beta, leak , CM8
Google I/O 2012 is on April 24 and i think they will launch another version of android then

Im not really worried about the ICS update from HTC. I myself have been lucky and have had ZERO issues with my sensation, but as fast as the quality devs here can roll stuff out we will have 4.0 before too long, and this being a back of the line phone? i dont buy that. It can be considered an entry level dual core phone, but with the custom ROM's and mods available for this thing, it has the ability to blow more powerful phones off the chart.
I must admit im waiting for the Nexus Prime, but until then i'll enjoy the sensation, and probably always will.

They didn't say anything about releasing the source in july right? Hopefully it releases the same time as Galaxy Nexus. I don't see why I would want an OTA when there's a CM9

If I'm not mistaken we would have to wait for HTC to release the source for an Android 4.0 compatible kernel to be able to run CM9 on Sensation. Or maybe the devs can patch together an Android 2.x kernel for compatibility? I'm no programmer so I'm not sure what I just said makes any sense... but apache (provides the CM7 kernel for Sensation) said that they based their kernel on source code from HTC, I guess due to the aSMP CPU in Sensation.
According to @HTC_NL, the sensation range of devices will receive the ICS update soon (before the 1st of March). On the 1st of March an ice white sensation will be released in Holland.

HTC provides users of the Dutch Sensation, Sensation Sensation XL and XE soon an update to Android 4.0 ICS. On March 1 also appears that a white Sensation Android 4.0 already installed.
To update existing devices called HTC no period, the manufacturer has only said that "soon" will take place. The update was on the air offered to users. It is still unclear whether the devices with the update to ICS also immediately be provided with Sense 4.0.
About new features in Android 4.0 version of HTC Sense is still little known, HTC has just announced that shortcuts at the bottom can be adjusted by the user. Recently there appeared images of the new version of Sense, showed that the appearance, colors and screen animations differ from both Android 4.0 and the current versions of Sense.
HTC Sensation spent the last year in June from 2.3 with Android. Last autumn there were the Sensation XE and XL on the Sensation. The Sensation runs on a Qualcomm MSM8260 dual-core SOC running at 1.2 GHz. The GPU is an Adreno 220. The phone has a 4.3 "LCD with a resolution of 960x540 pixels. The camera has a maximum resolution of 8 megapixels and shoots video at 1080p with 30fps.
The manufacturer will this spring, next to the white Sensation, presumably releasing new models. These will most likely at the Mobile World Congress telecommunication fair, which takes place later this month in Barcelona, are presented

This would be awesome, as they would release kernel sources with this phone which might be compatible with the original Sensation/Sensation XE... which would allow better custom kernels for ICS which is the only thing wrong with [email protected] at the moment! (apart from the *few* minor bugs )

Update: HTC just wrote us to say that its original press release was incorrect — it'll actually ship with Android 2.3 and be upgradeable to 4.0 down the road, just as its other Sensation versions will be. In other words, don't expect an ICS-equipped Sensation on March 1st... but you can expect a white one with Gingerbread. Furthermore, the white Sensation is already available in select markets, so the PR is simply announcing its upcoming availability in Benelux. Now, the question becomes: how much longer is the wait for the upgrade?

Im seriously not impressed with the way HTC are masking ICS, AOSP ICS is a beautiful thing, so can sense be, but htc have gone about it all wrong with sense 3.6 and 4, I think im steering away from HTC slowly but surely, and can almost guarantee that I will be going AOSP ICS when it is stable!

You can say that again...
I like sense functionality, unlike its skining...it would be nice if they keep sense with AOSP design...
I like the ROM's that are already out there, and as posted above as soon as AOSP is stable I'll be going to that.
On the other hand I wonder what's taking HTC so long, we have devs that do this for fun and they're releasing great ROMs and here you got a major company that you would think have lots of professional devs that do this for a living and they take forever.

A chef here has to make a rom which is pre made and stable and tweaks it. If it works for 99% of the users it's good. Htc has to release a rom which work for 100% of the users.

You forget that it isn not just a phone software that they need to update and polish, they need to sort out all cloud services that their ecosystem is all about (eg facebook for HTC, watch, hub, likes etc).
I would rather wait a few weeks to get a finished product, than have unpolished system that has memory leaks or whatever...
You forget that average user doesn't want to mess with rooting and flashing and they even don't know about that alternative (and/or care) so they cannot and will not flash new "xda" software when official rom "breaks"...

HTC has been working hard to get its Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades ready, and we’re excited to announce that our first round of ICS upgrades will roll out by the end of March for the HTC Sensation, HTC Sensation 4G and HTC Sensation XE, followed soon there after by the HTC Sensation XL.
In addition, we can confirm Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades will be coming later this year to the HTC Rezound, HTC Vivid, HTC Amaze 4G, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Design 4G, HTC Incredible S, HTC Desire S and HTC Desire HD. Stay tuned for more updates on Ice Cream Sandwich releases in the coming weeks.

I am so happy right now. Saw the post on twitter and went crazy. After faulty eMMC's, locked bootloaders and no updates, i was thinking of going samsung next time. Not gonna happen.

EDIT: Just read that the Sensation will get it by the end of march, and the XL soon after. Then, probably the Evo 3D will follow. Our device should be the first among single core family (DHD and IS, not Sensation XL) to get the update, like it got the 2.3.5 Sense 3 update. I believe it would be close to late April/early, May. So it's gonna be quite a long wait. But better late than never

I'm sure there will be a leaked ROM for the us, DHD, IS, XL, and it could be easily ported
THing is, it won't ship with Sense 4.0, but instead 3.6
Bit sad....
It's kind of like the original Desire upgrade. It got the Gingerbread update, but HTC chose not to update the Sense version to 2.1.. THey kept the old version (Maybe because of internal memory issues?)
THat was kind of a rubbish update IMO.

We really don't need to care of Sense 3.6 or 4.0. Even the update isn't important. What's important is the kernel 3.0 that will accompany it, and it's source. After that, a Sense 4 port should be easy. It'll be just like what we have now - official Sense 3 and ported Sense 3.5, both on Android 2.3.5
Maybe we get lucky and get Sense 4 right away, who knows. All i know is, HTC won my loyalty with this.

Thats the main reason I'm happy too
I have no intentions of using the official update itself. I'm just interested in getting the base for this ROM & the kernel source. From there devs can tweak the base (Lowveld ) And the ROM will be much better
Hopefully HTC still release a WVGA device that will come with Sense 4.0 (although it seems unlikely)
Because the ROM will need resizing the images etc, which is not a easy and perfect job.
Virtuous Unity was a great job by the team, they resized the Sensations qHD Sense to work on our device. But unfortunately it still had flaws, inconsistent size issues, & wasn't as fast as the WVGA version we have now...
Anyway, enough of my rambling, I'm really happy with HTC's decision! They are even supporting the DHD which is a 2 year old phone.
Seriously, that device is lucky! It went from 2.2 + Sense 2.0 > 2.3.3 + Sense 2.1 > 2.3.5 + Sense 3.0 > 4.0.X + Sense 3.6/4.0
2 major OS updates and 3 major Sense updates! Thats as good as Apple with their iPhone 3GS updates!
One thing i did notice, was they haven't announced any plans to upgrade the HTC Flyer to ICS...

Crazy news. Keeping my desire s a tad longer then...
I also think this is great news, as I am not much for rooting and doing stuff to my phone. And better late than never.
BUT I think the main problem is that all the big phone producers have their own UIs on top of Android, meaning that we never get the updates OR really really late.
If they just would let google control updates, then all users would have ICS already on their phone regardless of brand and phone (overseeing old phones that cannot handle the new software).
I know that the big companies need to differentiate themselves from each other.. but still, just what I would prefer.
Waiting for HTC Sense on ICS
I dont know about you guys but I am pretty happy with HTC Sense and would love to have an ICS rom with Sense. Will wait for the update from HTC to try out ICS on my Desire S.
I just got a good reason to keep my desire s for another 6 months.
That guy who came out earlier and say he believes all the phones running gingerbread should be able to run ICS was right after all.

The update is close, it'll be here in April and as soon as it comes, there will be a post with a download link in the DEV section

There are no leaks - so I fear that the update is far away.
in former times the ROMs always "leaked" (aka ROM for beta testers) 1 month before the official releases...

I finally decided to open a thread for discussing the matter above, because I do not want the thread for officially validated info here be flooded by discussion, whining and bashing.
So everybody is invited tell us here, if he thinks that HTC sucks or whatever about the HTC ICS update.
My personal opinion is, that they don't. It is normal that development is delayed, and deadlines are shifted. They have to deliver an update, that is working out of the box without feedback from community testers and iterations like the custom roms here. And this is not only valid for Android kernel and drivers but also for the Sense 3.6 stuff. The only thing one could really blame em for imho is that they don't communicate the delay. On the other hand it is clear why they do not. If they officailly announce it, it will be all over tech press and blogs and even "normal" users, will know about not only the guys here (who are a minority in global sales). And this would also give the Android critics a voice again, and HTC has definetly no interest in that, so they shut up.
So, you got a working devices, which is able of everything you were promised when buying it. HTC will update it to ICS, even though they don't have to and there is no technical need. This is why I can't understand all this frustration. Of course, I prefer to have the update sooner than later, but this is life.
Just my 2 cents.

Unfortunately it wouldn't make any difference to the chatter. Can you imagine the comments we'd get posted on here if HTC did officially announce the ICS roll-out had slipped to August?

I think as long as we are getting an update..... It's cool cause an update released asap with out much testing and all will always hav many bugs n errors n people will be whining over that...... Bt what they can do was to release the kernal source from a certain point of development ...... For other devs to try.....

My contract ended 4 months ago now. I switched to a 30-day rolling contract with Three as there is no phone out that that I really want. The S3 has nice specs, but I don't like the way it looks, and it's a bit too big. The HTC OneX has nice specs, but no removable storage, and it's a bit too big.
I have decided that my next phone will, I hope, be the next Nexus. I have got my hands on the NExus 7 tablet recently, and it's amazing - if they can do something half as good for the next Google phone it will be a winner.
The 'Customer Service' side doesn't worry me. As soon as I get my hands on something I tend to root it and therefore risk the warranty. As for the whole ICS thing - it doesn't really worry me as I have no doubt we'll get it in the end. I am far more concerned with how good the hardware is and how much support it gets from the devs.
I don't really mind - I've got ISC with CyanogenMod 9 anyway. It would be nice to get an official update though. For me, the waiting time doesn't matter. I'm happy with CM9/other ICS roms for now.

You know, it's not so long ago that HTC was the darling of developers just because they built the G1, G2 and Nexus One. Meanwhile Samsung owners were waiting until the end of 2011 for the Galaxy S to be upgraded from Eclair to Froyo - that's nearly a year after 2.2 first appeared.
Sony Ericsson used to get a lot of stick too for not updating their Xperia line, but the more recent ones at least got kind-of-official support for unlocking long before HTC's 2011 models.
To be blunt, I think all the manufacturers are as bad as each other when it comes to unlocking and official updates; which is why my next phone will almost certainly be a Nexus.
