Is it available in LA as far as anyone who lives there/has a Skyrocket, since the map (not even sure if it's the correct map) doesn't show it but there's news stories that say it has been started...
yes I am getting 4G LTE
What kind of speeds are you getting? Would be nice to get Skyrocket speed screenshot thread going on...

4g as in HSPA+ or as in LTE?
If you are talking about LTE, then it's pretty obvious, since we don't have the LTE built-in... but you probably know that already.
I'll try to get to a better signal area tomorrow if it stop raining...
Where I live I only get 1 bar, BUT with only 1 bar, I am already getting 1Mbit-2.5Mbit.. down and 400kb-900kb up --- which is like WH0A

That doesn't sound like lte you got there, that is a low hspa+ speed. Lte should be giving a lot higher than that.

Thats about average with HSPA+ for us in LA area, if thats lowest with LTE thats still pretty good. With a good signal I think it will be a lot higher.
put it this way... in LA HSPA+ avg WITH full bar is about 1.2mbit. with 1 bar I am normally getting 90kb, lol.
I'm getting higher speeds with HSPA+ with one bar...
Why I said that IF you are connecting to lte then that would be too low. I live in Buena Park CA just south of LA border with OC and MY AREA I get only a from 2-3 bars and jumping between H+ and 3G and I will get about 2Mb download sometimes up to 3Mb download, and always consistently .8-1.2 upload BUT I am on the OG SGS2 which DOESNT have lte.
So IF you are getting close to the same speed it SOUNDS LIKE you are connecting to the hspa+ and not lte. Your area probably doesn't have lte turned on yet, mine doesn't. I was told by the retention department that I would have lte by the end of this year in my area.
By the way WHEN I AM AT WORK in Newport Beach I get about 8+ download and about 1.5 upload with my OG SGS2.
SO LONG STORY SHORT I would BET you are connecting to hspa+ and not lte with those speeds.

Never mind, AT&T probably lied to me when I chatted with them. This clearly shows it on their site, but at the same time, I'm probably going with the Skyrocket and pray that they bring out LTE in LA sometime in the very near future.

LA does have LTE just hasn't "officially" launched cause they don't have enough of an infrastructure to support full roll-out. The skyrocket should be at some bestbuys already but ill have to check tomm to confirm. Also the reason select corporate stores didn't get the OGS2
Ohhhh, makes sense...Yeah, don't think I can exchange my current GS2 at Best Buy so I'll probably do it through an AT&T store. Just want to wait a week, since I have about 20+ days left on my exchange window anyway.
AT&T LTE isn't available in Los Angeles yet. The "4G" icon that you're seeing on your skyrocket is misleading, because AT&T also considers HSPA+ to be "4G." So when your skyrocket says "4G," and you're in Los Angeles, then that means you're on HSPA+.
Source: AT&T's website>list of cities with LTE coverage
Well, Verizon did it, too, when they first came out, but they build towers up in the city before they announce that it has 4G LTE there. So, your city might have 4G LTE coverage, but in fact, AT&T hasn't publicly announced it yet. Unfortunately, we know now for a fact that it's not coming in LA for at least until the end of this year, and I've decided myself to not go with the Skyrocket anyway so w/e.
AT&T store representative said that California as a whole will be getting LTE by mid January. They already have all the networks set up, they just haven't unlocked it yet. So yeah,

Its not misleading. SR has 4G and then 4G with LTE in small print under. Now HSPA+ is often misleading.
I use a SR for work and SGS2 for personal so I have seen the difference. Also data on SR is much faster than the SGS2 OG.

And I see you're in Brooklyn, so you just answered your own question as to why you're not getting 4G. As suggested earlier, Rooting your phone and flashing a new ROM should give you HSUPA (look through the forum, people are reporting between 1-3mbps up)
It is easy to fix so while it would be nice out of the box the user can fix it.

I am in Baltimore and if I go closer to the city I get the better speeds. I live about 10 miles out so I do not see it at home. I plan on heading there this weekend to run a few speed tests, only problem is there is allot more network congestion there.
I posted this in the Speed thread, the 2nd shot was with my Hero in downtown Baltimore about a month ago.
Here is what I am getting after root in the Inspire, was taken halfway between Baltimore and DC. Not sure why it picked a WV server.

mine is illuminated as well, that just means the network is tehre, but if they're only porting 3g speeds over the network, its all yours gonna get.
This is upsetting. Upload speeds are definitely crippled.

Crippled unless they remove the limitation with a firmware update. No prob getting 1700 up on a captivate on my home tower; never break 500 with inspire. Has NOTHING to do with any switch getting flipped with regard to upload speeds.
If you want higher upload speeds, root and flash.

This is definitely false advertisement on AT&T's part. Miami does not have 4g turned on, it's not even on the AT&T map for current 4g areas, but yesterday a rep. in my friendly neighborhood AT&T store, told me that if I had the "+" next to the "H" I'm getting 4g. So, I did a speed test in front of him and I got 1.8 down and 0.3 up. He seemed baffled and walked away. I just don't want to be stuck for another 2 years for a service that it is not true 4g. Maybe T-mobile 4g or Verizon LTE are better.

If the down arrow is lit it means there is downloading going on, if the up arrow is lit it means there is uploading going on, regardless of what network it's connecting to.
When you see the H+, this could mean you're connected to 3G, HSDPA, or, if available, HSPA+ (there's not multiple icons for these networks). HSPA+ (which isn't really "4G" - this is a marketing ploy developed by T-Mobile which AT&T decided to latch on to, I think they should be sued for this) is currently being rolled out, but it's not available in most areas.

atrix has hsdpa+ they promised an update to enable full hspa+ to the atrix and the inspire. the infuse is supposed to be the first full hspa+ phone. just att changing there tune on things as verizon steals iphone customers. also it takes time to update the network to support that the traffic. as the backend get stronger they will budge more on regulations.

try speakeasy.com in the web browser. my phone agrees eith that much better. i was getting similar download to you or less on speedtest bt on speakeasy i get up to 7mbps down
i got about the same
it might be something odd about my area and att's servers. my area was all Cell1 towers and were only updated about christmas time. i only had edge up till then and the area has always been weird.
i think ever since i had cingular>att i have had 3G down here.
same here
I am getting around 6MBPS up and around 300KBPS down. I also tried the speakeasy.net with same results. I have checked the speed in many locations and I found only one area that was giving me 2.5MBPS up. The download speed is high in all locations. ATT store told me that is the way it is (faster than 3G).
Its already enable. If you are getting slow uploads is your tower, try it at different times and dates. I will get anywhere from 100 to 1.5mbps on different days and times.

I have noticed that my speeds are the same as they were on the atrix. After the speed cap unlock.
Also keep in mind that ATT has just really started making the upgrades on their network from hspa to hspa+ just late last year and mostly in the centralized areas of major cities, starting with the standard backhaul of 14mb/s. Which is what the Inspire and Atrix are designed to run on. They are just barely starting to upgrade their network backhaul to the 21mb/s that T-Mo has already had in place on just about their entire since last year.
Now even though ATT has decided to go LTE, and while they are still slowing upgrading to 21mb/s hspa+, T-Mo has just started rolling out the next step up which is 42mb/s. It is with this that ATT plans to use as their regular next gen network when they purchase tmobile with real world speed of about 10mb/s down and 6mb/s up vs their 100mb/s LTE which has already been shown off to offer a real time download of about 25mb/s.

You probably mean 5.2 down and 1.3 up.
I'm in the Tampa, FL area. I'm getting 5+ down and 1-2 up pretty regularly in my area. I'm happy...it's beats the crap out of my old T-Mobile BS. More importantly, the coverage is WAY better.
Yes where do you all live? Where can I get these speeds?
Does anyone know if the icon in the task bar actually reflects what type of tower you are connected to? i.e. will it say "3G" if you are connected to a non-"enhanced backhaul" tower? Mine always shows the "H+" icon, and my speeds have ranged from 1.5Mbps to 8Mbps.
Well it shouldn't. Hspa+ should be available everywhere hspa was, and that's att's entire 3g network. So anywhere you got 3g you should get hspa+. That doesn't mean the tower can supply data speeds in the range of hspa+ 7mbit to 21mbit. The speed to the tower is being called "backhaul"
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
That's what I was asking - if the H+ indicated the tower was upgraded or if it just shows H+ always. I had hoped for the former but expected the latter.
the h+ is only the cell technology used between the phone and the tower, and all 3g towers are upgraded to use hspa+, but this doesnt indicate the towers connection to the network, so even if the tower can only supply 0.0000001mbit, itll still say h+. the only way to know what you can get from your area is to look at your actual speeds.
Just hit 11.47 down and 1.64 up out here in NYC. Pretty good if you ask me.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA Premium App
Thanks, that answers my question. I was just hoping for an easy way to know which areas were upgraded, since I assume that even with an upgraded tower it's possible to see speeds below 7Mbps and therefore it wouldn't be cut and dried. I've only seen 7+ speeds in one spot so far (at work), I see more in the 2 to 4Mbps range so I guess a lot of my area is not upgraded.
I am very envious. We are supposed to be getting it in the next month. Of course by then we won't have the free tethering anymore.

if you look at the graph, it did blip over 14mbit before ending at 13.5
Nothing here in King of Prussia, PA (Philly suburb) to even match those speeds
Getting an abysmal 1300 kbps in download and a miserly 760 kbps in upload.

I'm disappointed in the "4G" to say the least.
Hopefully that changes.

Yes, this does have to do with my Inspire, since I compared to it.
I stopped by a bunch of stores today to check out some LTE phones, their speeds, and the devices, to see how much they stand up to the hype.
On my stop at an AT&T LTE store, I came across the Samsung Galaxy SII Skyrocket. I did a speed test on the device, and came up with these crazy numbers!
I made absolutely sure wifi was off so that the numbers would not be skewed. Also, there was an LG Nitro HD right next to it, in which I ran the same speedtest, and only got about 2Mb/1Mb. Of course I repeated the test numerous times just to make sure, and each time they came out about the same. I whipped out my Inspire 4G, and got about 4Mb/2Mb.
What's going on here? The only thing I could guess was that they were provisioning all the local bandwidth to the Skyrocket in hopes of trying to sell it quicker.
What do you guys think?
Well, Let's see. The skyrocket has LTE, the Inspire does not, hence the speed difference. You do the math.
It's legit.

It think it's fairly obvious that LTE is going to have a huge speed difference, but not THIS huge. I went to a Verizon store today also, and it got nowhere near those speeds. Also, why didn't the HTC Vivid and LG Nitro HDs that were on display get even close to those speeds, even though they were running on 4G LTE?
I think the real meat of this story is the fact that the OP's inspire received better Speed Test results than the new LG Nitro did. I find that interesting.
I'm with the OP in wondering if maybe they're provisioning the bandwidth for certain phones in certain markets.
I believe it's all a conspiracy. I got decent speeds on my Inspire every now and then, but I just wish the speeds were more consistent. I have a Skyrocket now and the speeds can be exceptionally nice in certain areas.

According to the specs I looked up, on the HSPA+ networks, it should pull 21 mbps down. On LTE I can see that as possible.

Some LTE speeds on the skyrocket
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1406887
And some more speeds
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1397251
So if you search and read you would see that ATT LTE is that fast and faster.

According to the specs I looked up, on the HSPA+ networks, it should pull 21 mbps down. On LTE I can see that as possible.

If can't do at least that, I would consider it poor. I consistently average 5-6mbps on my Inspire with peaks of 8-9mbps at times.

When I briefly had my vivid, I could constantly pull down 30mbps at my house.

In the Chicago area I was pulling in 20-50mbs for my download and for my upload it was always above 10mbs.
I ran the test on the Skyrocket running the Melvin ROM.
I'm getting on average about 8mb down and 1 MB up using Eva miui.us dark

I am getting 6mb down in bay area. AT&T just lit up LTE in SFO and San Jose.

I get about the same. When by millennium park i average about 30-40mbs for download.
All depends on location, my inspire rarely does better than 200ms ping, 1.5mb down, 800kb up
Current location is just west of Baltimore, MD.
At my previous job in VA, I was getting consistently better speeds.

Not trying to pass off a wifi result as a true cellular data result are you?
don't mean to be off topic(i apologize), i understand theese speeds are lightning freakn fast, but what is one to do with theese speeds, at the current rate anybody running on a 2gig plan can expect to run that out quickly, right? check in on threads about phones running lte, and there will be a thread called throttled (for unlimited data users), 22mbs is great but two weeks later some are running 100kbs, sounds tough. so what exactly is the point of the large bandwith? faster cpu, dual core n such i get, but speeds like that are meant for home entertainement/pc, gaming console/pc, work etc.

No wifi symbol in status bar
I've seen up around 60mbps. I'm interested to see how it performs once traffic picks up though.
Hox is a monster phone. Probably the best phone available. But att is really disappointing. Locking the phone is reason enough for me to return it, but the LTE speeds (at least in Chicago) are even more disappointing. My girlfriend has an t-mobile galaxy blaze....and of.course I've been comparing the phones/service since I've had the hox. Not only is her phone just as fast...the data speeds are significantly faster. In Chicago, I connect to lte 100% of the time....Im at about 11mbps ...she's consistently at 15-20. Right now I'm in the city....I get 3 mbps on LTE....she's at 25-28. Paying about $30 less. HTC one S is a better sized phone and its unlocked. As much as I like this forum....Im returning the phone tomorrow for the S.

I wish I could just return an AT&T phone and magically replace it with a T-Mobile one.. How exactly are you getting the phone? Ending your 2-year contract that you just renewed and signing a new T-mobile one?
But yes, I agree with you on all accounts. The One S probably was a better size (as a phone) and there are other nice things, like the aluminum body. If it were available on AT&T, I'd probably end up getting that instead.
Not exactly sure yet. I'll report after I visit att tomorrow.
the boot loader will be unlocked soon, so no worries there.
Data speeds, maybe no one has tmobile in chicago? lulz
LTE isn't magic.. If the carrier doesn't have the backbone it doesn't really matter..

Wow those are ridiculously good data speeds on t mobile. Are they consistently that good in the Chicago area? if so I'd be on t mobile too. I'm getting about 20mb down and 15 up here in the dc area on lte. Better than the 3/1 I was getting on hspa though.

I can answer a few questions. I used to work for T-Mobile and I dealt with cell phones for about 10 years.
He can cancel his upgrade and it'll return him back to where he was originally. So if his contract was already over, he can switch without paying a fee. I believe AT&T gives you 30 days to cancel the upgrade but usually it is 14 days.
Chicago does have A LOT of T-Mobile users just so you know lol.
On my Amaze, I get about 18-22mbps depending on my location.
If you guys need phones unlocked, PM me
I was month to month before the hox.
Although the speeds vary depending on where I'm at, the T-Mobile speeds never seem to drop below 15 and was close to 30 last night. (She's had the phone for a month so those speeds have been consistent throughout). My hox is always connected to lte , and my speeds vary from 1 to a max of 20. Mostly I see it at about 7-8.
Really impressed with Tmobile's data speeds. I checked out the One S yesterday and hit 20 down. My Razr on LTE got 27, so it's pretty close.
fuybjeans, where in Chicago are you?
Yeah, LTE speeds are nice and all but I wish AT&T would have upgraded their 3G network to HSPA+ before rolling out a whole new network. HSPA+ can be ridiculously fast.

I believe AT&T are the 3GPP release 5 standard (HSPA), as opposed to T-mobile who are on the release 7 standard (HSPA evolved AKA HSPA+). The difference being that HSPA maxes out at 14 mbps, while HSPA+ (release 7) goes up to 42 mbps.
My One S in the downtown area hits speeds around 19-20mbps, but around Wrigley Field I've only seen around 10mbps. Either way, it's fast enough for me
Though I do believe there is some sorcery involved in Verizon LTE.. at least when I had it hah.

Heck if could consistently hit 10-20mbps on hspa I don't think I'd care about lte, especially given the battery advantages of hspa. Here's my lte speeds in the dc metro area. Seems like t mobile hspa is nearly as good.

As hasoon2000 said, you have 14 days to return your phone and reset your contract status to how it was before the upgrade.

When he said "locked" I believe he means locked bootloader, not carrier locked.
