A few questions. - Captivate General

I rooted and installed CM7 using this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBPu-GqM9RE
Worked like a charm.
My first question is, my phone now shows the H+ symbol...did I flash the semi-4G speeds onto this? I say semi because AT&T doesn't have full 4G yet, and it just throttles the 3G to 4G speeds.
Why does the Facebook app save images?
Also, my phone now seems to use a lot more data than before and don't know how to reduce that. I mostly use Wi-Fi when at home, but I only have the 200MB plan, so...this could be an issue.

You have 3.5G. Basically HSUPA/HSDPA which is not true 4G as you said. Data I can't answer for you; search the CM7 thread and the Q&A thread for any mention about that issue. No clue about the Facebook app, I have never paid any attention to that.

Yeah, me and my friend found that odd. My assumption is it keeps the images cached for faster loading. I know Linux/Google/Android likes that whole cache fad. (SARCASM)

[Q] HSDPA

I recently flashed Firefly3 which enables HSDPA. Does hsdpa use up more data than the traditional 3g. I know they're the "same", but I only have a 200mb plan with att and I've already used about a 100mb in the first week of my billing cycle. I've had this phone for about 6 months and the most data I've ever used to this point is about 60mb for the entire month. I'm almost always on wifi. Does flashing rom use data? Is there a way to find what is using my data? wifi never sleeps, just trying to figure out what is doing this. Is it the ROM?
Flashing a rom won't use data. Apps running like email could be using data. What kinds of apps are you using everyday? I believe the 3g and h only differ in how fast data travels and does not effect how much data is used.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Forgot to mention you can see what programs are running under apps from your home screen. I believe there are apps that will tell you what is using data.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Almost all the apps I use are the same I've been using for awhile. Like i said i'm on wifi about 95% of the time. Something is chompin away at my data, just not sure what is. Does att have the ability to tell me what is doing this. For all I know it could be just one app.
3G watchdog might help you, it's on the market.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Guess I'll try watchdog. thanks. glad it's not the rom, cuz i'm really liking this one so far.

Do you use speed test alot? It eats up slot of data every time you use it (about 6mb every time, if I remember correctly). Did you leave background on, our auto sync? They all take up data.
funny you mention it cuz i just thought about speedtest, i ran it about 4-5 times this weekend. prob the culprit. already uninstalled. didnt like the results anyway. they were making me feel inferior. thanks for the help both of u. much appreciated
Don't worry about using that stuff anyway, just numbers. What actually matters is how long web pages take to load and apps take to start, etc. Real life tests!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
HSDAP is enabled already in stock ROM. It is HSUPA that requires custom ROM (and most importantly non-AT&T modem).
Simply display a H icon (as a lot of custom ROM choose to) instead of 3G icon (as AT&T mandates all its phones to) doesn't mean you're downloading any faster.
The speed has little to do with how much data you will use per month. Of course, faster pipe will let you consume data faster but ultimately it is what you do determines how much data you use. a 1kB emails will only uses up 1KB of data regardless you're downloading it at 100kbps or 1mbps.
Emails and moderate web usage should leave you plenty of legroom on 200MB plan. Just don't do any kind of video or audio streaming or speed test (which they download and upload a large chunk of data to measure your speed).
dont use speed test the servers get busy and i think the carriers may be restricting some bandwith to them because it is used soo much. use the browser to go on speakeasy.com i get way faster connections to that.
to answer the original question, the captivate has hsdpa by default. any modem for a i9000 i9010 i9088 t959 or basically anything that is not a i897 or i896 will enable hsupa and hsdpa also known as hspa.
the difference being that rogers and att restrict the upload bandwidth except for the iphone by disabling hsupa on the phone. this is probably because they are afraid the since android is so flexible and hard to regulate that people will use there phones to do things that use huge amounts of data. if you limit the upload it makes things like video chatting jittery and it makes hosting multiple devices slow but most important it makes hosting anything basically useless while only having a small effect on browsing. hsupa shouldn't increase usage but it does increase speed.
turn off network based location, reject googles collecting annonomous location data when you flash a new rom and turn off any sync option that doesnt need to be on. you will also notice good battery life. then you might also want to find a rom with good add blocking. with all that you should see good battery life and less data useage.

[Q] possible to not pay AT&T for DATA

okay ive always used xda as a source of information and i made a new account for this soul question. i have a rooted HTC Inspire running latest android revolution ROM i read that u dont have to pay for AT&T data usage with this ROM....well i have and i want to know if i can or cannot get free tethering wired or wifi i dont care without paying? i have a 200MB data cap on my plan and i need to know if there is a way around that if i can keep using the data w/o ATT knowing. im willing to do whatever it takes flashing another rom whatever so dont hold back on the android revolution rom alone your answers will all be a use to me and i thank u for helping me
I don't know about using data without at&t knowing, but you can tether with a rooted rom (which still uses data) without the at&t tether plan.

so at&t would still see me tethering and use my data rate and charge me?
Popupstoppa was correct about the plan. You will be able to tether using Android Revolution, but no matter which rom you use, AT&T will definitely know how much data you have used during the month. If you are only on the 200mb plan, I would say forget about tethering. You will go over your limit in minutes.

You are better off getting a Telus Desire HD(exactly the same as the inspire) and tell ATT you have a non smartphone and then you can get an UNLIMITED data plan for $10 a month.

I thought of doing this before, but it ends up being very pricey. Would you get 4g speeds with the unlimited $10 plan?

Unfortunately, you will not. None of ATT's feature phones, the ones that would be able to get the unlimited, have HSPA+. You wouldn't be able to go faster than 3G speeds, but that's the price you pay. Lol

All phones transmit imei numbers to att so they WILL know if your using a smart phone and automatically add the 2gb data plan.
Not to be the **** of this discussion, but do u really believe that there's a way to leech data without att knowing? Really? Getting away with free tethering is one thing, leeching data without them knowing on their own network with the ability to monitor traffic from each device is another. Common sense will tell you that, first of all, if there was a way, you would have read it by now, considering your claim of using xda
as a resource. Secondly, even if there was a way, don't u think att would have fixed an issue of that magnitude by now? (Rolls eyes)

ATT only knows of IMEI numbers of smartphones they sell with 3 exceptions that I know of: Blackberrys, Iphones, and the Nexus 1. Others are not in their database so they know not what phone you have. And that's a fact. I have been doing this for over 2 years. Still on the $10 fullfeature phone plan with unlimited data. And I don't tether.

I am not on the 4G plan, no. I use the older single APN. Do you actually think that matters? I still can't believe how many people are still fooled by this 4G crap. Especially within less than a year your 4G plans will all be outdated for the new LTE (The real 4G) that ATT is now implementing. Below is a screenshot from my Telus DHD. Not the best time of the day here as it is 3:40 PM. But my speeds are very good. I have hit as high as 6500MB download. Do you think this is 3G speed? Not.

No one is leeching data. And FYI, it depends how you tether as ATT can tell. And no they cannot detect my device. Just because you have not read it before, how can you possibly think it is not true? So sorry to say but you are. (Rolls eyes)

I don't buy into that 4G crap from ATT. 4G to me is LTE. With the speed you got, I would say you got as close to LTE speeds while still being on a still 3g network. If ATT wants to call their HSPA+ network 4G, I will call it that just for their benefit. I believe the truth and side with the the original statement from the ITC about what is truly 4G.

I am saying, irreguardless of what device u use, they can monitor the TRAFFIC that is coming from whatever device u are using. The whole basis of this question was whether u can go over your said data limit without att knowing. That question is absurd because they can monitor exactly how much data u are using, no matter what device or if u are rooted/romed

[Q] Data Throttling

When Tmo is figuring out if you have used your 2gb's of "full speed" data, are they actually deciphering if you were using 4g or 2g? I would assume they can't and they are just counting all data (besides wifi) until you hit 2gb's and then throttling you.
Anyone have any info on this?
If you're hitting 2GB on 2G alone that'd be pretty amazing!
If you're talking about using 2G when you don't need full speed to save your quota, it'd still count I think, but at least it wouldn't get used up as fast!
I believe that's correct, meaning if you use 1GB of your plan on a 2g connection, it would still count towards that "full speed" quota.
Of course it counts towards your data limit.
Throttled speeds are lower than 2g speeds; therefore, 2g can be called high speed.
"High Speed" is a relative term.

If you really want to get yourself pissed off try this: setup a proxy server on a machine, then do all your internet traffic on your phone via your proxy. You'll find that t-mobile is off (in their favor of course) by about 18%. I'm working on a paper now that I hope to put online soon that shows all the logs and how t-mobile is RIPPING US OFF on what they SAY we use and what we REALLY use.
How are you taking into account all the data the core and downloaded applications the os pulls.?

cause I have everything passing though a proxy.
Hope you know your tests are going to be inaccurate. Not going to go into detail but you are forgetting something. T-Mobile isn't ripping you off and they have no control over this.

I have a unlocked g2x on cincinnati bell and they throttle at 5gb, which is better but still sucks. I was looking on my account online and my data usage was going up even on days I was at home all day, connected to wifi. I called customer service and found out that even if you are connected to wifi, if you have mobile data turned on in settings it still counts on your mobile usage data. Only way to use wifi and not have it count on your mobile usage is to turn mobile data off when using wifi. A bunch of bs if you ask me! You may want to check with tmobile and make sure this is not the case with them as well.
Also, there is a fix I found that is suppose to work with tmobile to disable the throttling. It has to do with altering the services.jar file on your phone. I tried it on my phone and it didnt work, i figured because cincinnati bell is using a different method to throttle people that tmobile uses. U may wanna look into this so after u get throttled u arent stuck with a unusable phone for the rest of the month. When i was throttled i could barely send email it was so slow! google 'disable data throttling on g2x' to find how to do it.

[Q] Sick and tired of Sprint's HORRIBLE 3G service in my area...can I get some help?

I get on average 26kbps down. I also frequently drop down to 1X. Simply awful. I know it isn't a coverage thing. Sprint's map for 3G says the whole city and then some are covered. I call BS. This will be my third Sprint phone with the same issues. I've called Customer Service but they say they can't do anything unless more people complain.
Could someone help me with modifying a PRL to get better service in my area? There is no 4G where I live so using some Verizon towers wouldn't matter much. I already know how to flash a different PRL but I don't know how to read one or modify one.
If I hadn't just bought my Shift I'd be ditching Sprint for someone else. ANYONE else.
I feel your pain can't beat the price though.

Nope. Didn't make the least bit of difference. Download is still around 24(ish) kbps. I didn't mention it before but my upload is 10x my download at around 250kbps.
What Rom are you using? Well you can always call Sprint and complain. Explain to them how bad your Data services are. I've heard of them on more than one occasion, offering a free Airwave to customers with bad Data services. It may take more than one call. But if you get it for free it will be worth it.
I was having all types of connection issues. I formated my sd card. With ext4 at 1gb and swap at 256, then installed cyanogenmod nightly 243, boot install gapps new one, boot installed sparkies script and v10 kernal. And settled in. I am getting 6 times faster everything on a 8gig class 4. Did it to the wifes too but did 2gig ext4 cause she has a butt ton of apps. It made her give up miui. Well kinda lol she wanted that 3.1 miui launcher. But anyway. Do this it should boost your bandwidth. I sure as hell did mine. I am getting 2Mb on 3g now up to 7 or 8 on 4g and 15 on wifi.

There is a thread in the Evo 3d forum here on xda that has the phone # for Sprints retention dept. If you call that number and explain that your cell and data signal sucks and you drop 2 out of 3 calls they should send you a Air Rave for no charge and won't charge you for the service. I have fair 3g speeds but 4G coverage (which is why I went with sprint and the shift) in Atlanta is really spotty in the metro area. When you are any cell store the strength and speeds will be great to get you to buy in my opinion. You don't get to see how it will be in daily use until the contract and sale are complete
I can see downtown Atlanta from my condo but yet I get no 4G and fair 3G speeds. That's how it is all over Atlanta. I understand the frustration especially if you are paying the $10 4G fee. I went to ask about the coverage and speeds. I told the rep I was upset at paying a $10 extra fee for 4G when it is so spotty and slow. Apparently the $10 fee is not for 4G, insert bs excuse here ! While I can't be of any help to your speed issues I want to say that even where I live it's a problem. Most of the time I keep my phone connected to my wireless router and then in areas where free wireless is offered I connect to it running an SSH tunnel app to my router at home.
Ok, I'm still getting ****ty data service and I've tried almost everything I know how to do. Does anyone.know how to modify a PRL so I can force a connection to some Verizon towers? Try THIS THREAD for what you need. Specifically THIS post.
when i updated the radio and wimax radio on my shift i did notice a little stronger signal in general. but in my experience especially in fringe areas, MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD then TRY TRY TRY TRY then AGAIN AGAIN AGAIN several PRL variations. i think in general the 00001.prl everyone agrees is a good one to start on. just make sure your phone is set with NO restrictions concerning data roaming. half the time at least half the time im not even on sprints network, lol. if i call customer service i usually get verizon, but i have got alltel and USCC before lol. heh, in the gulf of mexico it shows up as something like 'national calling system' or something lol.
i never noticed the thread recommended above, so i will trying that in approx. 47 secs lol! so thankd for pointing that out.
but always, when i doubt, keep adding towers.....

Well, after using the 00001 (or whatever) PRL that is 100% Verizon, my speeds have increased dramatically. Its like getting a new phone. I don't plan on using that long term as Sprint can get uppity about it but I'll try it for a while and then see if I can settle on some sort of hybrid approach or even that corporate PRL you linked to.
Thanks for the help. I'm a happy EVO Shift owner again.
No problem . Here to help .
Ok then. I switched to the Sprint corporate PRL. Went from full bars at home to two. I'll try it out for a bit and see if it sucks less than the normal Sprint PRL. Verizon is looking better and better even with the data caps.

But the Bill is crazy . One has had about $100 in overages . The other has great reception, but two weeks in he's already over his 2GB cap . No thanks to all that .
i have sprint but i put this prl on my phone and for last few days both data and voice have been better than 0001.prl, i'm in new orleans so i do not know bout other parts of country but i thought it worth posting.

[Q] Sprint wants me to bring my (rooted) phone in for tech support...

So I've been having issues with my 4g since Friday, I tried flashing the dodge kernel to my phone and noticed no 4g after I rebooted. Upon further examination this a.m I think I accidentally flashed another zip but the zip only says flash, I'm thinking that may be a reason no 4g I forgot where I dl the zip I think it was a x99 kernel dl, I could upload to my dropbox if anyone would like to check it pot. Anyway I contacted sprint and we did all kinds of troubleshooting over the phone, updated profile/prl refreshed the system. He even had me manually enter info in my phone to get 4g to work but nada nothing. So he suggested a factory reset and I was like naaaw I don't want to loose all my info(and possibly root) so he made me an e ticket to take my phone into sprint to have it checked out. So I guess the million dollar question is should I? If so, how do I hide my root or is there a way?
Don't take it in rooted.. Run the ruu back to stock, check your 4G.. If its still not working then take it in to sprint stock unrooted

+1 to what Crump said. It's your best bet. It may fix your 4G issue. If not at least your Unrooted Stock. Never take a device to Sprint Rooted. There's a good chance they'll flag your account, not something you want. Also to clarify a Factory Reset will not break Root .

No I'm being serious... There is a HUGE difference in how data is transferred between a mobile network and a landline ip... Mobile networks were NEVER meant to handle the size of data packets that get transfered when tethering as a host on ps3... Do some research because in this instance, data is not data. People that use mobile networks for hosting ps3 and xbox, although xbox does it quite differently, are the very reason why sprint's unlimited data could disappear soon. Sprint can easily tell when you have been tethering more or less hosting. I dunno about you but I personally cant afford 5 lines on VZW or ATT with capped data, and I have terrible T-Mobile coverage in my area. It's not the little amount of tether usage majority of us use, it's the huge amounts of data that are transferred when someone is using their phone as a host, i.e. running ps3/xbox, torrents, etc... And yes, 3G in my area sucks too, but that makes it right for someone to clog up what little bit of network that is there? Like I said unlimited could be ripped away from us, unless people start showing a little respect to the t.o.s. agreements WE ALL signed...
