[Q] Motorola Targa - General Questions and Answers

I am thinking about getting an upgrade and the new Bionic has caught my eye. However, if the Motorola Targa is going to be out within a few months I want to wait.
I have searched all over the web and what I have found is speculation and poorly photoshopped pics of what the Targa could look like.
Does anyone have any REAL information on what the Targa specs are?
With all the developers on this site someone has to work for Motorola or Verizon and have some info to leak to us...

[Q] A Xoom2 / Xyboard forum?

Hey guys, I was wondering, what is the process to have a Xoom2 / Xyboard forum opened?
I'm guessing we need more members owning them and posting about them. Plus they just came out, add to that the locked bootloaders (...effin Motorola) and we're not going to see much development.
Plus Motorola quietly brought it to the market, with older hardware, and a pricetag that isn't too appealing.
Also the Xyboards are CMDA tabs and not GSM. GSM devices always have more devs and currently with no WiFi version, you are locked into buying from Verizon (for the US that is) for $500 to $600 w/out a contract or $350 to $450 w/ a 2 year. That really really hinders the potential customer base.
I, however, do wish we had a forum for them as I'm really wanting to make the jump on one.
Ok, thanks for this reply it makes sense. I will play around and try to find a way to unlock it but I'm not an advanced dev so I might not be very useful on this
I'm really bummed out about this. I bought one on eBay to skirt around the Verizon contract. It's a really cool tablet. ICS would look great on this thing. It's built really well and it's thin. What a shame that I'll have to flip this thing without ever experiencing its full potential.
But I will be looking out for a forum in the future.
Add me to the list of the xyboard owners looking forward to a xyboard forum.
Xyboard enthusiast
I would also love to see a forum on the Xyboard. I recently purchased one and am quite pleased with it so far. There are a few things I would like to see if they are issues just with my tab or systemic.
Me too on my 8.2
I'd like to see such a section also.
Xyboard 8.2 WiFi only.

Atrix 2 RESOURCE LINKS

ATRIX 2 RESOURCES
This will be an up-to-date list of the more popular resources for Atrix 2 phones. Where there is no resource specifically for the Atrix 2, I will attempt to include our nearest relative (the Atrix 4G or original Atrix). I am also experimenting with what could possible turn into a much larger list, but would not be specific to Atrix 2 (but useful for those new to Android Dev.) --- time will tell on that.

The Beginners Guide !!! (NOOBS)[ALL IN 1 RESOURCE GUIDE] for Atrix2
ATRIX vs. ATRIX 2:
.
If you know about the differences between the 2 main models of Atrix phones, then you can skip this section. I am writing this part of this article for the benefit of the poor suckers who might otherwise not be informed of the differences prior to making a purchase decision, and for whom the tragic hope for a lapdock or other nice accessory at a reasonable price would otherwise later (potentially) become a great frustration and sense of hatred for Motorola and salespeople. What follows is OFTEN not written anywhere in plain sight, and frankly, I myself was confused about some of these details, right up until very recently (nearly a year after buying, rooting, and customizing my own Atrix 2). In fact, although undoubtedly many sales people are equally confused by the model differences, some of them are perhaps NOT confused, but only pretend to be, in order to keep the technical details intentionally confused for any potential customers, when it is in the financial interest of that sales person or their store. The Atrix comes in 2 basic flavors, and these are very different from each other. In fact, there are many INCOMPATIBILITIES between the 2 models. The most striking differences are between the physical ports (connection holes) on the two models, which are completely reversed (thus making docks, lapdocks, etc., between the two models, incompatible).
The original atrix, is sometimes referred to as the Atrix OG, as a playful reference to 'Original Gangster', a term coined by rapper Ice T. But many people believe that there was a sort of upgraded Atrix OG, which came before the Atrix 2 (that there are 3 or more models) --- myself included, at one point in the past. For those of us who were confused, we assumed that the model of Atrix which came between the Atrix OG, and the Atrix 2, is called the Atrix 4G (which is INCORRECT, obviously, since both the Atrix and Atrix 2 are 'sort of' 4G phones). There is no such model with an official name matching "Atrix 2 4G", although the Atrix 2 is capable of 4G speeds (sort of), and you often see marketing materials referring to that name as a synonym or substitute for the Atrix 2. You also see lots of references in marketing and sales info, as well as spoken conversations, to the Atrix 4G, which is also just a description, and not an official name, and like references such as "Atrix 2 4G" can be very confusing to customers, who are trying to determine which model is which.
Lastly, there are occasionally some references to an Atrix II, with a roman numeral II, instead of an Arabic 2. This is technically incorrect also, but it seems to be tolerated to some degree, as it does not create as much confusion as those who make reference to an Atrix 2 4G (a worse transgression). The BEST RESPONSE to this incredibly stupid mess, is to simply refer to the actual model number, which does not resemble the marketing terminology at all. For instance, the ME860 and the MB861 are both Atrix OG models. Notice that a higher model number, aka, ME865 and the MB865 both correspond to the Atrix 2 model (however, there is actually another digit on the end of these model numbers, for most phones, perhaps all phones???,.. so, for instance, my phone is the MB8656, which is an Atrix 2, and is intended to be used on the AT&T network in the United States). The model number varies slightly with the region of the world and carrier though, so even though using the model number is generally more precise and accurate than a marketing "name", even the model numbers can in some cases, be confusing, because even though the model number is technically different, the phones may actually both be the same overall "CATEGORY" of phone (aka, Atrix 2, versus Atrix OG). Above all else, simply remember this much (as mentioned above), that (1) it is better (more precise) to refer to the model number, than the marketing name of the phones, and (2) that the terminal connectors on the physical phones are different between the Atrix 2 and Atrix OG, which means that most accessories which attach to these ports will not fit both models, unless you hack them by physically modifying/cutting/rearranging the casing or connectors.

PURPOSE/WHY?
I was curious and began checking around. It seems that the Atrix 2 is under-represented, relative to many other Android phones (including the Atrix 4G, and original Atrix). It would be nice to have a valuable and centralized (unbiased) set of links like this, for those unusual circumstances that might warrant.
=======================================
NOTE 1: If someone could PLEASE proof-read, and correct my statements above, in the above section explaining the Atrix vs. Atrix 2 model names, and marketing terminology, I would greatly appreciate it. Frankly, I think I may STILL be confused my own self, as to which actual model number (MBxxxx) people are referring to, when they write or say, Atrix 4G.
NOTE 2: The below sections are experimental at this time. They might disappear if they do not grow or are considered not useful.

OTA News

I have searched and searched but it seems as if there is no chatter of any updates to the Ultra. Has anyone found sites with info or any news of possible 4.3 upgrade?

One of these days I might buy a phone that isn't obsolete or passed over for Dev as soon as it comes out. If anyone one wants advice on which phone not to buy just ask me to pick one out and don't choose it.
Let's see Since on VZW
HTC Droid Eris
Moto DX2
Moto Ultra (NOW)

The Eris had a pretty rich dev community. Lots of devs, with some great GB ROMs, which is remarkable for the crap hardware for that thing. It even has S-OFF for the bootloader.
I mean Official Dev from VZW.

The official devs come from their respective companies (Motorola, HTC, etc). But we really need to also blame Verizon for their slow (or what they call rigorous) approval process for updates.
Do you think the Droid Ultra and Maxx will get treated as second-class citizens on Verizon? The Verizon Moto X seems to be getting its update.
Can't be long now! Too bad the Maxx/Ultra/Mini community is not heavily steeped in an enthusiasts base. There may already be a soak test out. Anyone a member of the Motorola forum?

According to Motorola terms and conditions; a soak test member cannot talk about the soak test (aka fight club). They would get banned on the Moto forums. Best sources would be all the Android blogs, which I believe haven't said anything as of yet.

Something must have changed. Every soak test performed on other Motorola phones always become available through the forums before the official OTA drops.

Actually, a user has to be a forum member AND opted in to the Motorola Feedback Network for each device. This is a subset of Forums members who have volunteered to provide feedback when asked. Members respond to surveys, provide feedback on new software in advance of full release and are a key group they turn to when they need "real user" information.
Already a known quantity. For the other Motorola phone I had, I never took an ota as someone ALWAYS brought it to the enthusiasts forums before an official ota dropped. Is this your first Motorola phone? Have you never side loaded a soak update?
Sent from my XT1080 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
This is my 3rd Moto device and I have not personally sideloaded a soak update before. Though, I did heavily follow and discuss the Bionic leaked soaks from Gingerbread to ICS that took over a year, that was quite interesting. Has project Cheesecake stopped since people have moved past Gingerbread?

Well OK, but why is the Droid update lagging behind the Moto X update in the first place? They're pretty much the same phone.

Is this a rhetorical question, or do you think I somehow have more information than the article I copied & pasted?
My guess would be that the X is on a bunch of different carriers all over the world, but upgrades to Verizon-exclusive phones are delayed by Big Red's process of inserting crapware and approving the upgrade.

The Motorola X is Motorola's flagship phone. The Droid Series are phones built under contract for Verizon. They're going to take care of their flagship first.

There's very little in the way of additional crapware on the Droid lineup compared to Verizon's Moto X, and the approval process is almost certainly the same for updates.

I would have a lot easier time buying that argument if the Droid lineup had different hardware or required different software than the Moto X. But instead, they're basically the same phones in different cases. It sure seems like the most efficient route would be to develop and test the Droid updates at the same time as the Moto X updates.
The assumption is that they are the same hardware, but I don't think that has been substantiated with any real evidence short of the X8 label. Can anyone prove me wrong?

I sent samurihl the XML files for the X and the full droid lineup for his house if moto he said he couldn't believe how close they really are. Almost identical I am not sure this proves the hardware is the same but I would guess its a pretty good indication. I think the X got the update first because it is on other carriers. I'm sure were not far behind.

[Q] Project Tango Tablet Devs?

It appears from the news today that Google will sell their Project Tango Tablet to the masses and the price is being cut to a reasonable (IMO) $512.
My question is will more devs here at XDA use it and will it warrant it's own forum?
I am seriously considering it because it really appears to fit my needs in terms of more ram/storage packed in a good package.
Thanks!
i purchased one about 6 weeks ago and it is an interesting device. i would like to see a forum here also.

[PETITION] Calling all Moto owners

Please sign our petition requesting Moto to provide the Android N update to the Moto G 2015 and Moto G Turbo.
https://www.change.org/p/motorola-please-include-moto-g-3rd-gen-for-android-nougat-update
You may be wondering why I am asking other Moto owners to support the G3 and Turbo by signing our petition... We are asking Moto to simply do what they said when they released the device, by providing fast updates for 18 months and not drop support for this clearly capable device. This could easily effect all of you in the future just like Moto is trying to do to these devices if we don't call Lenovo/Moto on their clear violation of what they stated previously as if they get away with this, what is to stop them from providing updates for any other device in a far shorter time span than promised.
Part of the beauty of Moto devices was the promise of a near stock Android experience with fast updates for an 18 month period, this is one of the reasons many of us purchased these devices over other choices that were available, we should hold Moto to what they sold us on and letting them get away with not doing that now will likely mean other devices will be dropped before their time in the future.
As of this posting, we have over 680 supporters and could still use everyone's support.
I thank you in advance for your assistance. Feel free to share this link in any appropriate group or community you chose.
I would suggest this article for reading, it is one of the best articles I have read recently that is Android related, even if you don't agree with our petition... Moto and Updates: More Planned Obsolesce from Lenovo’s Motorola
Please post a link to where they promised 18 months of fast updates and I'll sign. Since they never updated to 6.0.1 they have already violated that promise.

I can't find an actual link that says they promised, or it was even their policy, to support devices for 18 months, although Moto did agree to follow Google's recommendations (along with most other major manufacturers) of 18 months of updates for capable devices back in 2011 and has mostly followed it since then. A quick Google search of "Moto promise of fast updates" will show you that they marketed the Moto X Style/Pure and G/E models as getting "lightning fast updates".
If you don't want to sign because you don't want to agree with the petition, fine... but Moto has clearly let down their customers on their updates.
Good luck from a Motorola Atrix 4g owner. If you don't know the story on it, I'll give you a shortened version.
Moto stated on their website that the Atrix would be upgraded (specifically by the model), then said it wasn't going to be.
Until the Moto XPE actually gets upgraded, I'm not believing it. So you might be adding this phone to your petition before it's over.

Moto G is not a flagship, but it is one of Motorola's best selling phones as far as I know. That's a lot of people to screw over and leave on 6.0 December security patch like my wife's phone currently is.
I will definitely sign the petition. I don't own a Moto G 3rd Gen but I bought two Moto g 3rd for my parents a few months ago. they don't care about updates but would be nice to get Nougat on their phones. Lenovo is very lazy when it comes to updates.
I signed it. I don't know why manufacturers are so notorious for having horrible updating habits. It's not that hard to keep phones updated. Not to mention the security risk they run for not updating phones.
Done .
The point is why these companies are so stubborn, they sell us a device and then forgot us.
They have this horrible habit.
I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has signed the petition... We have exceeded the 1000 signature milestone and received confirmation this be a featured story on at least major Android news outlet in the coming days.
I am still requesting everyone to actively sign the petition.
Again, thank you.

Most consumers that buy these phones don't care as much as you think for updates. Heck I got family members with Lg G4 and Galaxy S6 and they've been having an update icon on their phone and don't care for it. It's the bottom line, plus if it's a top seller, they'll just make the next version and sell more. I love your passion and I'm with you, but believe me the cheap phones will not get as much support as the expensive ones, that's just the bottom line.

This is pretty much true for most things today. I've noticed that is a couple of previous phones there was an update that actually occurred right after the 18 month support mark. And sure enough, it seemed to cripple the phone slightly. I'm not surprised one bit.
Good on folks for trying but I wonder how these types of petitions are meant to work. You get the signatures needed, then what? And how is the number of signatures needed determined? Again, credit for trying to speak up about this. I just wanted to understand this method fully.
