[Q] No data on T-Mobile (only wifi)? - myTouch 4G General

I just got a used mytouch 4g from ebay. I am currently on the grandfathered 5.99 tzones plan which works fine with my current Nexus One. When I put the same sim and sd card into this MT4G, I get no data. I cannot set up my android market. When I try the internet browser, it starts with home.web2go.com, but never finishes loading. When I select one of the shortcuts, e.g. tmobile.npr.org, it times out. This is with two bars of signal strength, plus the H icon and up/down arrows showing activity.
Can this behavior be related to my tzones data plan? If the phone did not like the tzones plan, I would have thought I would have gotten an upsell screen or something.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.

The APN should be epc.tmobile.com. Try that, but personally I hope it doesn't work. As someone who actually pays for the data my phone uses, I hate to see people scam the system by using a data plan intended for a dumb-phone from the year 2005. No offense, but that's how myself and many others feel.

QFT. It shouldn't work, t-mo sells these phones, unlike the Nexus One, which was never sold by them. It should just redirect the OP to an upgrade page since the model will be recognized.

Right. The fact that it doesn't me to the upgrade page makes me think there is something wrong with the device, and I should return it. If, however, my experiences matches others on the forum, then I'd keep the phone and switch plan.

[Q] HTC Maps on MyTouch 4G?

So I want to use a navigation app on the MyTouch 4G without using any data. If I'm not mistaken, the Google Navigation app uses data to download the map of your current location. The new HTC Sense maps (again if I'm not mistaken) are saved on the phone and don't use data. So my question is if I can get the HTC maps on the MyTouch 4g (specifically without having to root the phone and flash the new Sense rom onto it)?
What's the point of using a mthd without data? Really just defeats the purpose of having this kinda phone if you ask me... Just my opinion though

But, srsly, I see were you coming from....I would rather store my maps on SD so it can be cached faster, especially for "out of 3G/4G range" towns
Its not that I don't want to use data with the phone, I do. Its just that I am considering switching to the cheaper limited data plans that T-Mobile will roll out in the near future. So thats why not using data for the nav would be great.

The "limited" data plan will only work with certain phones. The mt4g will be a premium device that will require the unlimited data plan.

Yeah but I'm using a G1, so I can just use that to get the new data plan, then I will buy the MyTouch 4G off-contract and swap the sim.

Tricky fellow! LOL! J/K
Sounds like a good idea.
If you're trying to avoid getting the unlimited plan by pretending you're still using your G1, it won't work. They have a database of all the IMEI #s and the IMEI of the phone you're using gets transmitted, so they can see what you're using.
Back on AT&T, I bought a used iPhone (original model) and spoofed the IMEI to avoid having to pay for the iPhone data plan. Not sure if you can do this on Android.
You can see what I'm talking about by going to your T-Mobile account online and somewhere it should say which phone you're using. If you switch to another T-Mobile phone, it'll change. Carriers only have the IMEI #s of the phones that are branded by them. So if you put your T-Mobile SIM in an AT&T or unlocked, unbranded phone, it wouldn't show that phone under your account.

All of the above is true... Sold phones for years at radioshack...
Well it doesn't matter anyway because the new data plans will be available for all phones. From the leaked(?) document: "T-Mobile will respond to our customers' needs by introducing a new low-cost $10/$15 200 MB Web feature that can be added to any device."

Not that it matters (see my previous post), but even when they detect someone switches phones, can they really just alter your data plan without asking your permission?
The way AT&T did it, they would send you an automated text first a number of times. Then they'd add it. If it's stated in the TOS then they can do it. See if you can call them up and find a nice rep who'll try and keep it for you though.

Can someone just answer his question without requiring his motives?
There's other people with legitimate reasons to do the same. What if you are in an area that has bad data reception? What if you wanted to use navigation outside of the city?
There's been plenty of times that I couldn't use Navi because of poor reception.
Use the navigon app it is now downloadable from the market. Maps are stored on the phone.

Tethering with out plan! Message from att

My friend and I added a new apn from the steps in forum to allow tethering without a plan, well I rarely use mine but he uses his a little more to pay bills and such online through his laptop. He received a message yesterday from ATT stating that this sim is not authorized for tethering and to stop. From what I read I thought they were only catching those with the cryphone. Are they starting to look for others too, what's the deal we r both grandfathered in on the unlimited plan, it shouldn't matter how I use my mobile internet its the same wether I use it in my phone or tether through our laptops.

you can pay most bills with the smartphone browsers. i only tether for streaming stock quotes (java applets) when i'm away from home. can your ipad or ipad2 does that? haha
this is why i rather carry my sony 4.5" UMPC when i'm away from home.

huh??
i have the 2GB plan, does it really matter how i use that 2GB? (laptop or phone?)
if i have cable, i can hook it up any ways i want! (to 50" HDTV, desktop, or laptop)
It's bad enough they (at&t) screwed themselves with the ipads, but now you they really want to be like apple n charge you twice because of it. Why should you have to have 2 data plans to use 1 data feature anyway?
I think it was really more for people like me that have unlimited data plans. I can use an ass-load more data with my laptop than I could with my phone.
Either way, a feature is a feature is a feature. They aren't the first, and they won't be the last big company to charge for stuff like that. As much as you or I don't agree with it (I really hate stuff like this), it's not enough to justify theft. I refuse to pay for tethering, so I just don't do it...
Also, if you read some of the Android guru's talking about the handset manufacturers all starting to lock their bootloaders. This is the reason. Before, when it was just us goofing about with our own devices and hurting noone, especially not the carrier, they couldn't care less. As we start moving into LTE with a tethering option, you'll see almost every single Android handset maker locking their phones down. Just look at the Thunderbolt... HTC has always been a big proponent of the Android dev scene, but they signed that bootloader. If you think it was for any other reason than to stop people from tethering and flooding Verizon's LTE network, you're crazy. Verizon may have forced their hand, but it's still done. Neither AT&T or Verizon want to have to deal with what AT&T had to with the iPhone saturation killing their network speeds(and the crap reputation it's brought them) when it comes to their new LTE networks. They'll do whatever they have to in order to guarantee the majority of their customers get a pleasant network experience. Even if that means making "Suggestions" to handset makers. Motorola did it, HTC did it, Samsung is next, then LG. And ultimately, we're going to be the ones to blame. That's just the way I've been seeing things. I may be completely off base...
*NOTE* The thunderbold has been hacked. Maybe there's hope after all.
At this point I don't really care anymore. If AT&T ever delivers 4G speeds I won't have to tether. Charge me, don't charge me, whatever. Being an AT&T customer is exhausting.
Sent from Desire HD or Inspire 4G or whatever this thing is called via premium XDA app.
I had AT&T update my IMEI because I was going to be using a non-smartphone for "traveling" and had them put in an unlimited $10 data. Went ahead and popped my SIM into my Inspire, and I've only gotten two messages and an e-mail that they recognized I'm using a 4G SIM and that they've changed my plan accordingly. I called and checked my account online, and both show that I've still got the feature, so it's been working; plus, I've been using WiFi hotspot for my laptop this whole time.
Hope they don't catch on!

You're not going to get 4G speeds with HSPA+. It's a 3.5G technology. The same thing that T-Mobile has been touting as 4G for the last year. They had great speed on their network because no one was using it... That's not being mean, it's just the way it is. If AT&T has this infrastructure and it was only 40% utilized, every current 4G phone (Atrix & Inspire) would be getting 10-14mb down.
I'm in Northern Atlanta (The home of AT&T wireless), and I get 5mb down and 2mb up late at night. During prime time, I pull 2.5mb down and 2mb up.
This will all change when AT&T starts rolling out their LTE network. It should be showing the exact same speeds as Verizon's. They're both similar in size, and running the exact same technology.

G2x working on web2go or t-zones?
FYI, T-mobile has a list of all IMEI matched up to its respective device. It's up to T-mobile whether or not it's black-listed. That's why sometimes when calling CSR, they will be able to call you that you have an iPhone despite T-mobile not carrying the iPhone. You may argue, "nexus14, when I log into mytmobile.com, my phone shows up as a blank image! therefore, T-mobile must not know what phone I'm carrying."
Wrong. T-mobile knows -- it's either T-mobile doesn't have a stock image of your device or it hasn't been programed into their website yet. Regardless, there exist some sort of master IMEI list that links up to each respective device.

My understanding is regardless of buying outright, they have the imei numbers in there database from these phones and would prompt you for an upgrade and wouldnt work. Isnt it the nexus phones that t-mobile doesnt get the imei numbers from?
I highly doubt it will work.

I believe it was only the Nexus One that didn't have its IMEI documented with T-Mobile. When I switched over to my Nexus S, I was no longer able to use my $10 data plan. It was a real kick in the crotch.
And that's the Nexus S, which wasn't even sold directly from T-Mo. I wouldn't get my hopes up about web2go on the G2X

I can confirm that $10 web2go (not 200MB) works with nexus one but NOT NS (except you root it and move /efs folder to safe place).
As I have "4G web" tagged on my EM+ 3 in 1 plan, I am fine with it, but 3rd line (with web2go) will have problem.
t-zones/web2go will not work on the g2x.
i heard in settings, there isnt an option to edit the apn in order for one to use t-zones/web2go.
so there will be a point in time where we will all have to cough up $30 data plan or whatever..

Damn I just got a HTC Incredible S (it works with T-zones) and I am going to be upset at myself for not getting this instead.
If the phone works for one billing cycle on Web2go/T-zones, I think we will be gold. Hope T-Mobile throws its loyal customers a bone with allowing this to work on non-capped dumbphone plans.

New phone for AT&T

OK I had at&t for a long time now but as ot late last year any upgrade to a phone will change a data plan. Fortunate i still have the $15 unlimited data plan on my phone. Gone from from mpx 220 to touch pro and baccflip. Currently using an unlocced Mytouch slide which works great but I have no 3G and I'm seriously missing it. If I go to any phone that's comparable to the Mythouch Slide that is actually from AT&T I would loose this plan. So is the any phones I could get that is comparable or better that wouldn't change my plan. Heard something along the lines that I could use a phone on the Orange Network that is from my canadian brothers up north and could actually do that but would like to get some confirmation or ideas from my fellow XDA'ers.
They should not change your data plan. You should be grandfathered in. If they do that is BS but you could always by one. Look for the phone you want on here, ebay and craigslist.
I would recommend calling ATT again because everytike you speak with someone, there story seems to change. Maybe you'll get lucky and get on the phone with someone who will help you out

[Q] possible to not pay AT&T for DATA

okay ive always used xda as a source of information and i made a new account for this soul question. i have a rooted HTC Inspire running latest android revolution ROM i read that u dont have to pay for AT&T data usage with this ROM....well i have and i want to know if i can or cannot get free tethering wired or wifi i dont care without paying? i have a 200MB data cap on my plan and i need to know if there is a way around that if i can keep using the data w/o ATT knowing. im willing to do whatever it takes flashing another rom whatever so dont hold back on the android revolution rom alone your answers will all be a use to me and i thank u for helping me
I don't know about using data without at&t knowing, but you can tether with a rooted rom (which still uses data) without the at&t tether plan.

Popupstoppa was correct about the plan. You will be able to tether using Android Revolution, but no matter which rom you use, AT&T will definitely know how much data you have used during the month. If you are only on the 200mb plan, I would say forget about tethering. You will go over your limit in minutes.

Not to be the **** of this discussion, but do u really believe that there's a way to leech data without att knowing? Really? Getting away with free tethering is one thing, leeching data without them knowing on their own network with the ability to monitor traffic from each device is another. Common sense will tell you that, first of all, if there was a way, you would have read it by now, considering your claim of using xda

ATT only knows of IMEI numbers of smartphones they sell with 3 exceptions that I know of: Blackberrys, Iphones, and the Nexus 1. Others are not in their database so they know not what phone you have. Especially within less than a year your 4G plans will all be outdated for the new LTE (The real 4G) that ATT is now implementing. Below is a screenshot from my Telus DHD. Not the best time of the day here as it is 3:40 PM. But my speeds are very good. I have hit as high as 6500MB download. Do you think this is 3G speed? Not.

I don't buy into that 4G crap from ATT. 4G to me is LTE. With the speed you got, I would say you got as close to LTE speeds while still being on a still 3g network. If ATT wants to call their HSPA+ network 4G, I will call it that just for their benefit. I believe the truth and side with the the original statement from the ITC about what is truly 4G.

I am saying, irreguardless of what device u use, they can monitor the TRAFFIC that is coming from whatever device u are using. The whole basis of this question was whether u can go over your said data limit without att knowing. That question is absurd because they can monitor exactly how much data u are using, no matter what device or if u are rooted/romed
