Is the thrive the only choice available to get a android based tablet that can usb host out of the box? I am interested in the thrive...because of the host capability and because you can replace the battery. Ergo... you dont have to end of life it and turn it into a high class alarm clock when the battery wont hold a charge anymore. I also like the full sized hdmi. I mainly want it to take on road trips. I have my 400Gb of movies on a hard drive and want to be able to access them and watch them on tv in a hotel room.
My flyer makes a great gps but I have to bring a computer to change the movies in it
IMHO, Thrive has best USB support, but Asus Transformer Keyboard dock, Archos 101 G9, and Acer a500 also have pretty functional USB ports.
My a500 has some pretty good support. But the tablet itself is kinda too heavy.

I have the dock as well as a usb A male to male cable. Any way to leave the usb cable connected from the dock to my pc to transfer files?
I can leave a jump drive plugged into the dock and access it with ifileManager, but I'd like it to function similar to using the included cable. It would be so easy to swap a file real quick while it's on the dock charging compared to connecting another cable or removing the microsd.
Where did you get the dock? I Googled for it and didn't find anything being sold for the Viewsonic G Tablet.

Maybe use the search feature on the gtablet forums
It's the malata dock sold at merimobiles and alibaba, among other places, check the accessory forum and you'll see a few posts regarding where to get it and reviews of it.
It seems the full size usb and the mini usb function very differently fom one another.
My computer knowledge is limited mostly to hardware and windows, so I'm not even sure where to begin aside from physically connecting everything lol
Thanks, dirt4618, your response is very helpful. I tried the AliBaba site but they are unable to take credit card payments for some reason. I also felt a little uncomfortable about the security of their site and my financial transaction if I bought from them. The Merimobiles site has the Dock at a little higher price but does business with US customers via Canada so I feel a little better about dealing with them.
I can answer the question in regards to the USB on the dock, When I did the review I simply used a thumb drive and a keyboard / mouse to test it. I'm not sure about the 'power' that those extenders use?
As for docks, many have been getting them online. I had a chunk of 20 but they went in 36 hours. I may have a few more coming in but I tend to keep it quiet until I have anything in my hand.
i love the drag and drop feature but im worried. pricing and specs are awesome and of course not having a usb port isnt a deal break but still
I am, I really hope they release an accessory so I don't have to buy the keyboard. Technically speaking it would be super cheap to make.
Actually I am since my G Tablet has the ability to power my 500gb USB HD that has all my movies on it which works wonderfully since their last update.
I'm not saying this to bash the Asus, just that this is a very useful feature that I would want to have available without the extra dock.
Do you mean specifically from a usb flash drive? You should be able to connect to a pc through its usb drive through the transformers proprietary port and drag and drop that way can you not?
Technically it could be done if someone took up the challenge
Similar to the xoom usb host modification
http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/15979-hack-enable-usb-host-mode-ie-thumb-drives-on-the-xoom/
It may actually be easier, since the transformer already supports USB through the 40 Pin connector via the laptop dock
Its just a matter of trying to figure out the proprietary connector Asus put on the transformer
I really wish they would have at least included a micro USB port
Not a bit. The price point on the tablet alone is already great for what it has now. From a business standpoint they needed something extra to justify the dock price since it is there ostensibly to add more functionality than a normal tab has.
i am sure someone will hack up a cable very soon, since it's clearly stated that the port has both USB host and client capabilities.
Charging stand
There is going to be a charging stand according to Asus for 69.99 that includes 2 USB ports.

So basically you could turn it into a honeycomb desktop? (stand + keyboard and mouse, or stand + keyboard, mouse and screen through HDMI).
This would be a decent desktop setup for kids I guess.
I posted something on on Asus' Campus Life. Please hit reply to it and respond requesting this accessory! Look for username Dean.

Interesting... If true (and it's written in a very straightforward way, even includes MSRP) then Asus are really planning quite an ecosystem for this tablet. That implies good support in terms of updates etc. as well, to try and get the ball rolling... Nice find!
hello,
I seek a kind of electric charger shema typical of android.
In fact I have broken the tip of my x10 mini pro. Where it is loaded with a USB cable.
Except that I bricked and I need to connected to the computer so I'll try to cobble together a new embouten waiting.
SE refuses to repair made me!
I dissected a usb cable to charge an android and he only had two son, one positive and one negative charge therefore I think. And I took off my x10, 5 outings ago, so how to connect them? you see what I mean?
I just need a shema that I say or connects the five outings on the usb cable
thank you

Hi All, I was about to buy a Raspberry Pi type device so that i can install some juke box software, stick it behind my touchscreen monitor and mount it on a wall. Anyway i got to thinking about using a smartphone. I have read about installing XP etc onto a HTC 3d and i guess thats an option but id like to get your opinions
The goal is to have the touchscreen (19", which i already have, DVI and USB for touch) mounted on the wall with the 'PC' stuck on the back so no cables etc are required. I was planning to use a powerline adaptor to get ethernet to the thing. All easily possible with an actual PC, but what about using a smartphone?
Andy.

So I'm looking too redo my car audio system. Obviously this may not be the best suited forum for this topic as a whole, but I'm primarily concerned about the tablet (Asus Transformer TF201).
Looking at wiring an OTG cable with power to that tablet as to get both the media out & charging capability. The cable I'm ordering has many people backing it by saying it does allow for charging AND media playback over the cable without any issues, however I can't quite locate information on the TF201 to being able to do that / anyone has tried it.
I've got the 3rd plug on the OTG, being a Female USB plug that runs to a DAC for RCA Output which leads to my sound processor, then amplifiers.
I guess what I'm asking is, does the TF201 support playing audio over a capable OTG cable AND charging at the same time?
Also, is there an easy way of connecting an external hard drive to the tablet? I'm sure I can construct by DIY or some $ a powered hub to feed some juice to everything but I don't personally believe the TF201 would be able to manage both audio playback, charging, and read access from a hard drive. But I'm down to give it a shot if nobody has. Biggest doubts would be the factory TF201 firmware may not support it but some root/unlock and flashing (of, say, the proper kernel and OS) could fix that.
EDIT:
Just realized the docking keyboard for the tablet has a USB port, haha. So I'm going to assume that it could power the external hard drive I have (if not I have another plug to power the HDD from my battery when ignition is ON).

Yes, USB port can be used for powering an external hd. Although some hard drives need a separate power line.
If you have questions about your tablet, best to ask in the Eee Pad Transformer Prime Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting forum.
Good luck !
