Hi all
Long-time lurker here.
I recently got the OTA Sense 3.0 update and I’m disappointed with it for a number of reasons – found a fair few bugs and there’s some aesthetic changes I don’t like (the Android+Sense interface is increasingly a mess!). Hate the 3D homescreen thing. Someone should tell HTC that flat is in!
But my main problem is that since the update the phone’s been generally very laggy. Scrolling everywhere is slower than before and can be very jerky. Overall the phone just isn’t as responsive as before. And here’s the weird thing – the new HTC task manager and other third party task managers are reporting only a total of 596 MB of memory available. Obviously the phone has 768 MB of RAM so I’m wondering if something weird is going on here? Has the new firmware somehow zapped the usage of the rest of the memory and therefore this is what’s causing the slow-downs? Or is it just that it’s showing the available memory minus Sense? Does anyone know what the deal is? I’m assuming other people are also seeing that RAM anomaly?
Thanks all – I look forward to hearing any theories and thoughts on this!
Cheers
Ben
The RAM is reserved for the Android core apps. You will see less with this new update as the phone requires more RAM.
Remember having less free RAM doesn't make your phone slower... Of anything it will be faster as the data is saved in the RAM..

Ah ok, thanks for that - explains the anomaly.
I still think this update is laggy as hell. Shame. I much preferred the previous version. Hmmm, might be time for a root! I just wish there was a relatively straight forward way to root from this update. The idea of first having to revert to an old HBOOT and then do all the S-OFF, root and flash stuff kind of scares me.
Has anyone rooted from the new Sense 3.0 update? Is there a step-by-step process?
Thanks
Ben
Strange as I tried another OTA updated stock phone today and was quite impressed over how fast it actually was.
I know that this is severe but I'd possibly try a full reset and then look at speed after you've setup again.
I believe that you should still be able to unlock using HTCDEV site and then flash custom ROMS which remove the 3d side of sense.....with the super smooth 2d rosie fixes.
Yep, super smooth 2d is still 3d, but the wodgets have a 2d element, and its much faster.
Many people find it laggy after updating, but if they wipe and update it is fine
Agreed. Do a full factory reset and in fact you will hopefully find your phone faster than before. I did. Loading apps from the setup - manage apps screen takes about 2 seconds max whereas before it to at least 5

What about in app scrolling though guys, particularly in the browser? I'm finding this very slow and jerky. And in Google Reader and other content-based apps. Are you seeing this? The scrolling's horrible here. Want to check before I do a full reset!
Here's some bugs I've noticed too:
- The HTC Bookmarks widget. Scrolls very slowly.
- The bookmarks page in the browser no longer has a scroll bar.

Do you know if the HTCDEV site performs both an S-OFF and a root to the Desire S? In other words, can I then just go ahead and flash a ROM?
Thanks

Hi all,
Does anyone else have a problem with sense keep restarting everytime they close an application? It keeps going to the white screen with HTC on and loading sense again. I have tried closing any open apps and system processes but it doesn't seem to sort the issue
Any ideas would be brilliant guys
Thanks

Not every application but it Does happen here
I got so sick of that.. Decided to use Go launcher EX and now the phone is quick and responsive. No white screen and spinning wheel.
Keeps happening with me... Espically after i do browsing using mozilla firefox

Same here I also have the same issue..any solution?other then go launcher.

nothing you can do about it really.. sense is killed off while running certain apps, probably those that are more memory intensive to free up enough ram. Then after closing those apps it has to reload.
Rosie on the stock Rom isn't forced to stay in memory, so it can get killed when you are out of Ram. I'm pretty sure some custom Roms are forcing it to stay in memory, and that helped me while I was still using the stock home screen.
Reason I went with LPP. That's the only hassle with a device with it's own memory management.
Same problem here...
Does anyone have an idea?

I went with Launcher Pro Plus here too. I love the Sense launcher more than anything, but the constant reloading just got to be too much. Hopefully HTC can release an update to fix it.
yeh, this is really starting to pi$$ me off now and i thought this phone was suppose to be the flagship launch for htc and something like this is totally ruining it for me
I've only had that happen very infrequently regardless of rom. One thing to keep in mind is that its not entirely HTC's fault. If rosie relaunches after you close an app then the app you were running was possibly poorly coded allowing its RAM usage to run out of control (with the exception of apps that just need that much RAM).

I also experience this annoying thing. And I also think its related to the lack of free RAM and android having to kill sense to free up some RAM.
This is totally HTCs fault!! its obvious that the amount of RAM on this supposedly flagship device isn't enough to handle the new sense. I've never seen something like this on my desirehd and I use the same apps on both devices...
The only thing i can recommend is to install custom rom. I had this problem too but after installing custom rom (which has some RAM optimalization) my problem was solved

So hardware manufacturers are supposed to throw in gobs of RAM to account for poor coding by third party developers and drive up their costs in the process? They have no way of knowing what apps you'll run and if they work properly.
I'm not sure of the technical terminology but basically it comes down to this: when apps are backgrounded they are supposed to enter a dormant state except for apps that utilize background updates or have some other specific need to maintain an active state while backgrounded. When dormant, they can freely be killed to free up RAM. Background apps holding an active state are only killed when there are no dormant apps that can be killed. The problem occurs when too many background apps hold an active state for no reason. This forces the OS to start killing active apps like rosie. The OS doesn't know how important your active apps are but it knows that rosie isn't that important in the whole scheme of things. The problem can also occur when an app's RAM needs are high or are allowed to climb out of control. In that case, killing all the dormant apps might not be enough to meet the app's RAM needs.
When an app on your pc has a RAM leak and its RAM usage climbs uncontrolled until your pc crashes, do you blame the pc manufacturer for not equipping it with enough RAM?

I was experiencing this a lot when I was on stock ROM.
I want to join the argument for custom ROMs. Ever since flashing LeeDroid I have not experienced this at all.
Another vote here for a custom ROM. When I was on stock ROM it happened to me a lot, especially when exiting FireFox. Haven't had any of that madness since I started flashing custom ROMs.
Same issue here and it's starting to make me want to go back to my HTC HD 2 which had none of these issues :-\
I was having the exact problem ! BUT I found the reason --> 'spare parts' If u have this sw installed in your phone u have 2 options:
1. Set activity/process management to NORMAL instead of aggressive
2. Just uninstall the SW if u really no need it
See U !
Every now and then my homescreens gets very sluggish and laggy, to make them turn I really need to be explicit and slow in gesturing. It seems to start at random, haven't found anything that appears to set it off.
Reebooting solves the problem, until next time of course. Getting quite annoyed with it at this point.
I have tried disabling live wallpaper and taking a look at what apparently are running, but it doesn't seems to be the problem.
It's a nexus s i9023 running 2.3.6 stock. Not rooted.
Hope there's a reply out there, thank you.

what possibly happened was you may have bunch of apps that autorun themselves when certain events occur such as when you regain network signal, receive a phone call, turn on screen, etc... over time these apps take up cpu which cause the lags you're experiencing. i would suggest rooting your phone and install Rom Toolbox or buy Autostarts app to stop some of these apps from autorunning.. The Nexus S is the easiest and most painless device to root.

I'm running almost the same apps as on my old Wildfire, and enver encountered the problem with it.
I'd prefer not to root my phone at this point. Bought just under a month ago, with the idea of running stock to see how the "pure android" experience was
I also find it hard to imagine that there isn't another way around the problem.
It just doesn't make sense to me that it takes so little to bog down the phone and that the solution is root
mine got very slow on 2.3.6 after not having done a wipe for 6-7 months. I didn't even have many apps installed. The phone runs a lot faster on ICS rooted or not.
Yeah, I've heard it should run better with ics and I'm quite tempted to just go for it with one of the many ROMs out there. Must admit I'm hoping for the official ota to arrive soon. I'd like to keep the phone unrooted so it'll recieve the official update. But if the wait proves too long I might just have to find a good ROM
Any advice for a stable no-fuzz ROM that won't cause me too many issues with stuff not working properly?
The issues with the lagging homescreens have been present in 2.3.3 as well. Was hoping 2.3.6 would fix it, but alas:-\

you can also just install advanced task killer (free on market) and kill some apps that are running and u might not need them.
Also you can try the Go lancher Ex (free on market - is a lancher that runs themes and schemes, from my experience this app make everything run smoother and faster).
Anyway like others said already custom ISC are really nice to use
cheers
Installed ADW launcher.EX and it appears to have solved the issues. Thanks for the input

I first apologize, I don't have much free time to search and I'm sure this has been addressed before. I also apologize for the length of this post.
My phone should be running faster. I experience force closes on htc sense quite frequently. My messages take almost 20-30 seconds to send, making it especially frustrating when I swype a wrong word that completely changes the context of a text and I have to send a correction text but can't before I get one back, further slowing my phone.
There are a bunch of bloatware apps that I rarely or never use, such as qik, wifi calling, facebook, etc; running in the background which I would love to disable or remove but don't have permissions to do so.
If it were possible to get a version of htc sense or similar that's stable, I'd love that.
Anyway. I know much of what I want to do requires that I root my phone, but this is >the< place where the geniuses reside, and I was hoping that I could get some advice and some direction. Is it possible to free up memory without rooting? if not, is there a guide written for this specific phone?
Or, is there another phone out there which has a touch pad and physical qwerty, an amazing camera and the other bonuses this phone came with?
Thank you in advance

S-Off, unlock your phone, then flash Miktouch 0.7 ROM. It is debloated and tweaked, but still based on the latest stock ROM (1.63.531.2) so everything works like it is supposed to work, still has the amazing camera, wifi, bluetooth. And it is fast and very battery efficient. Instructions for S-Off and unlocking are readily available in these forums, it is a relatively easy task.

...are you rooted?
Sent from Spaceball One.
The last two paragraphs seem to indicate that you are not rooted. The steps you can take without root and the willingness to flash new ROMs are quite limited. Mainly stuff like dumping all apps that run in the background and stuff like that.
New ROMs will open performance options that unrooted stock couldn't approach.
MikTouch 0.7 will be a good start for you. It allows a decent OC with a kernel flash (1.5gHz gives a healthy boost and is nice and safe).
The best advice I can give is read, read, read. Start with the MikTouch or BulletProof threads.
I used to be a die hard Sense fan. I have been running CM9 for the past 8 or so months and rarely go back now...

Hi guys,
sorry, if this has been answered before, however, I did not find an exact answer to my problem anywhere so far.
That problem is, that I've been facing a serious slowdown on my Desire S lately. In September, when official ICS came out for this phone, after the installation I was very happy with the upgrading: the system was very fast without any delays, had a very quick response, I would say, it was faster then Gingerbread.
But some weeks later (obviously after istalling some apps) it has become "lazy" in some cases, had not so quick response anymore, but still was Ok. However, the situation got worse and worse, and now practically every action takes seconds to start/run, ex. opening call history/recent calls, messages (often more than 10 seconds to open), camera (usually 7-8 seconds). Another strange thing is, that when somebody calls me, I have to wait usually 2-3 second after accepting a call in order to be heard, of when I receive a message, first the phone vibrates and 1-2 seconds later comes just the notification sound. Not to mention, that the Sense interface almost never reacts smoothly.
Sometimes it has better days, but sometimes it completely makes me mad. Anyway, it's a significant slowdown compering to Gingerbread or what I have used to regarding this phone.
Some background info:
Internal memory "All applications" option: 335MB used, 799MB free
"Running" option: 495MB used, 100 MB free
SD card: 7GB used, 426MB free
Quadrant Standard measurements: Total: 1392, CPU:2282, Mem: 808, I/O: 2659, 2D:100, 3D: 1109
- I don't really know, whether these numbers are good or not, but at least could be compared to another Desire S results with ICS.
So first I would like to know, whether somebody else is facing the same issue as well, and on the other hand I would be more than happy, If someone could tell me, what could cause the problem, or what to try that might be helpful. Every idea would be highly appreciated.
Thanks a lot in advance!
ps: I was thinking about installing some custom ROM, but I'm a bit afraid, that I could "brick" my phone, and on the other hand I did not really find a usable step by step instruction, how to root a Desire S with hboot version 2.00.002.
Installing a custom rom won't brick youre phone. Unless you dont know what your doing or youre messing with it. But i had the same problem to on official update of ICS after that i decided to install an ICS custom rom.... And never had problems too. Iam using ICE DS rom. for about 3 a 4 weeks it's a fine rom. But because i like play heavy games i decided to use shadowhawk rom sense 3.0. But i've tried every single ICS 3.6 rom of Desire s. And i had never some slowdowns on ICE DS. Its a great allrounder with a Nice interface. Just try a custom rom.
Every rom had its benefits. And its disadvantage

Why don't you try and free some decent size, say around 1 GB on the card. I suspect you may have moved some apps to sd and they may be finding it difficult to run.
Since initially your phone was ok with the updated system.

ICS rom has worse multitasking, apps are killed even when 150MB ram is free
Dear developers,
I've tested some KitKat ROMs in my Desire S by now. Unfortunately, for all performance is an issue. When using any browser (stock/Dolphin/Chrome) the whole system freezes from time to time and also for example GoogleMaps is really slow and laggy. I did a full wipe every time.
I'm wondering why this is the case... Is the CPU of the Desire S simply to old/slow for current apps like GoogleMaps or browsers? But why was it no problem on the original gingerbread ROMs than? Neither GoogleMaps nor the browsers do more in my opinion. GoogleMaps now even has less features than back then. Or is it because 768MB RAM is not enough for current ROMs? But as I see it, some low-end devices today even feature only 512MB.
I have used my Desire S since 2011 and I really would like to go on using it, but when I see how fast and smooth everything can run on a OnePlus One for example, and remembering that it used to run similarly fast on the Gingerbread-Desire, it can be really annoying from time to time.

I do. If you'd read carefully, you would've recognised that I was asking what is limiting the phone. If you do not have an answer for this, there's no need for posting.

Why so serious mate, chill. I have read the post carefully and my raction is caused by your thoughts. Even ICS was heavier than GB what about KitKat or Lollipop. I am sure that you will not be happy with a low RAM Device running 4.4.4 even if it a 2014 make as we all was pleased with Saga once 4 years ago. The mentioned OnePlusOne does not fit in the low end device category at all.
BTW I am on 4.4.4 for a couple of months now. I have no performance issues with it however it is very sripped down variant with many services disabled and apps removed but this is fine for my requiremnts. The CPU is running with the default settings but is overclocked to 1.4 GHz. Hope this helps.

Hum. I gave it a try but unfortunately the dialer app is tremendously slow. If I have an incoming call, it takes at least 5s or so until the screen lits up and I can answer the call. The other day, the dealer somehow froze and I was only able to place my call after waiting some minutes for the device to settle and reload. This is simply the complete opposite from "it just works".

My ROM is REFLEX BOW, version GR0UND Zer0 (#1.02), build 18th Feb 2015
I am using the Gapps and the BloatWare removal Script from this thread
I have also completely disabled Location and Google Play Services (more here), turn on mobile data only when I need it, keep it on 2G most of the time.
The apps I use mostly are Exchange e-mail, Calendar and Google Chrome. So I consider this as a very basic use. No multimedia, no games, no social networks. However as I have mentioned already this completely suits my needs. If you like this set-up feel free to try it and share your thoughts. Otherwise it may be a time for upgrade (I think it came for me but I have a hard time to find something that has the future-proof potential of the Desire S. Probably will wait for several months to see what OnePlusTwo, next Nexus or the Motorola flagship will look like)

Stefan
