[Q] Disable reboot on power button long press? - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've had my HTC titan for a few weeks now (since UK launch), and I am having a problem with the phone rebooting itself in my pocket, when I sit down. Now I am pretty sure that this is actually a windows phone bug AKA "Feature", but one that is more evident on the Titan due to it's size.
The problem is that when I sit down and lean forward (e.g. to tie my shoes), the power button gets pressed into my hip and is held down..and then after a few seconds the phone reboots. This is even with the locking enabled and pin protection.
Has anyone else come across this issue? Is there a way to prevent the phone rebooting from a long press of the power button? I am seriously regretting switching over to windows mobile again because of this issue..it's a real pain..I don;t mind if there is an app/mod I can install to fix this if it's not possible via standard settings (something like pShutXP for WM6) ..any ideas at all would be *very* welcome!
Thanks,
Spud/Pete

so, let me get this straight:
1) you want to disable the power button? How would you turn off the phone afterwards?
2) to turn off the phone, you need to slide down the lockscreen, and this is very unlikely to happen
3) if "you are tying your shoes" long enough, this will initiate hard shutdown of the device
So no, no way, carry the phone elsewhere.

Yeah, I'm confused by this too - as of Mango, simply holding down the power button won't ever turn off the phone (though it will show half the lock screen, with a prompt to slide it down fully to turn the phone off). Since the Titan comes with Mango... yeah, confused.

No..I am not talking about turning off the phone - thats completely different as you say, you have to slide down the screen and as its capacitive..that's pretty unlikely to happen in my pocket.
I am talking about the phone rebooting - I can replicate it in my hand by holding down the power button and the phone will reboot itself without touching the screen.
I don't want to disable the power button - I want to disable this reboot on long press functionality..as it's a right pain.
Maybe this is peculiar to the Titan rather than a general WinMob feature..but try it on your mango phone - lock the phone, and hold down the power button for around 10 seconds..don't touch the screen. Does it reboot?
Ideally holding down the button should just show the "slide to turn off" screen and nothing else, there is no need for that kind of hard reboot function when you can take the battery out on these devices..
Suggesting that I just don't have my phone in my pocket is not very helpful tbh- where else should I carry it?

No, my HD7 does not reboot if I hold the power button. I almost wish it would, since if the screen locks up I can't power-cycle the phone without removing the battery.
If there's not anyway to carry the phone such that it doesn't hit the power button (not a problem I have with my HD7, but I've never tried carrying a Titan in my pocket), consider getting a case - many of them can make the power button a little "stiffer" and less likely to be pressed accidentally.

I can confirm the problems Spud1 has!
Just like him i own myself a HTC Titan and with WP7.5 you can reboot the phone even when you don't slide down to shut down the pohone.
And that is VERY VERY annoying, even so much that i almost want to switch back for an android phone...
You can replicate this "feature" bij locking the phone when you push the start button on the top and put the phone in rest. (black screen) Then hold down the start button and do nothing. You get the half"Slide down screen to shut down the phone. Still don't do anything, no sliding, just hold the button. After 6/7seconds the phone wil just reboot!
This happens me also and can be replicated at least also on a HTC Trophy (it just shuts down) i believe it can be replicated on the Samsung omnia7.
This is something were i had contact over by chat and phone with HTC. But they will not help or are in no position to sort this out... A brick wall, and i got dissapointed by service.
I dont know how to get in contact with MS, otherwise i would love to do this!
So people, try it out, en then someone to solve this thing, i would rather pull my battery for a restart than this "feature"
PS. sorry for my typo's as a first post..

I've got this too on my trophy !!!!!

I can confirm this problem also on my Mozart.
It is probably one of the 500 innovations in mango.
Sent from my 7 Mozart using XDA Windows Phone 7 App

Innovations i can understand, but the Titan is an 4,7inch phone.
When you have this in the pocket of your jeans, like 85% of the people does, there is problem with this so called innovation.
And believe me, supportdesk at HTC in the Netherlands make me feel stupid about our complaints. The freaking phone restarts after 6 seconds while sitting on your knees or bend over to tie your shoe's...
Is there anybody over here who knows how to deal with this/disable it or has connections to discuss this problem with HTC or MS?

I can confirm this problem on HTC Trophy too(custom rom)
If i hold down Power button ,slider shows up .If i continue to press Power Button and do nothing my phone is power down (not restart)

It's a standard WP7 behavior, why do all of you complain? It's not a problem but standard feature (to be able to reboot phone if touchscreen stop working). Buy another, not so tight, jeans or belt phone holder or protective case.

Who said i wear tide jeans?
There are also people on a Dutch forum that had problems with some protecting cases or just in a bag. And that was with the Trophy.
I finally love the system itself, but this is a 4.7 inch phone where i payed a lot of money for, so i'm allowed to expect something.
Apparently the Systems features and the size make it a combined "problem".
a lot of people get this problem now and in the future when Sales go up!

BAM., there is nothing what you can do. I think it's by hardware design so there are no registry settings to disable power button. But what you expected is absolutely irrelevant to the current WP7 products

That is a straight forward answer! Until now HTC didn't give a proper explanation..
If it is hardware related, this is the only thing that s#cks on wp7/HTC Titan. But i still don't think so, because other ones, like the trophy just shut down.. No restart!
It just feels so dissapointing... Because i really started to like WP7.
Hopefully there will come a MS answer somewere/sometime for this.
thnx anyway!

Omnia 7 has the same behavior (press and hold makes the scroll down menu appear, keep holding and the device reboots) so it's not restricted to HTC devices.
Fortunately, I tie my shoes really fast

lg quantum here, same thing lol

Confirmed on my HTC Surround, phone shuts down. Also on my Blackberry 8350i (although power button is right below the screen and it comes with a holster so not really an issue). Pretty sure that the Evo Shift I used to have for work would do the same thing.
It's a pretty logical function though. If your phone were to lock up for some reason, there's no soft reset button that you can press. This serves the same function. Try holding down the power button of your PC for a few seconds. You'll find that it does the same thing. When you first press it your computer will (probably) start the shutdown process but if you keep holding it then it goes straight to off.

It's logical for a PC, or maybe even for a device where you cannot remove the battery or there is no other way to reboot the phone if it locks up (but who's to say that this "feature" will even work when the phone locks up anyway..)
But for a mobile phone where the power button can easily be pressed accidentally, where a device has to deal with much more than just sitting on a desk..no that is just poor design.
I understand that for many people it won't be an issue - but the fact remains that for lots of us it is (it's good to see that it's not just me!)...and calling it a "feature" doesn't help (thats a long running trick in the software trade..many features are just bugs/poor design disguised as such!).
I suspect that to fix this problem we are going to have to wait for a full unlock for HTC mango devices, so that we can load native apps who can potentially resolve the problem. I don't know enough about WM7 development yet to know if you can get at the Hardware Interrupts or not but if we can do that, then I am sure we can fix it. It's possible there will be some registry/configuration options too buried deep in the system, but without the interop-unlock we're stuck I think..
HTC/MS support sure as hell won't help us out as it's definitely going to be called a feature, no matter how big of an annoyance it is.
This combined with the discovery of how terrible Bing searching is has really put me off Windows Phone 7 though (the terrible search is the worst thing)..I'll be jumping back to iPhone next yearwhen Apple release their redesigned one, can't see a reason not to anymore. Which is a shame as I love the device + UI

Spud1, the long power button press can be handled by hardware schematics, not a firmware or drivers (but actually I don't know exactly, of course). So, your hope is very weak...

True it can - but you could override this kind of behaviour in WM 6.x..and WP7 is still just windows CE with a layer over the top really, so there is a good chance that it's doable.
The thing that makes me think it's possible is that people who have upgraded their devices to Mango from NoDo seem to have the same issue - which leads me to believe that it's partly to do with Mango rather than down to specific devices..but to be sure more people who have those kind of devices (and particularly those without a HTC device) need to read this thread and reply

How do I REALLY turn my xda exec "OFF"

Excuse me I'm almost suicidal.
I hold the two keys down that bring up the hardware control panel, I turn off the mobile phone, bluetooth, wifi, and activesync, I open the task manager and stop any active processes, I turn my xda off (at least I think I do) and BEHOLD in just a few short minutes the stinking thing turns itself back on again, and stays on.
My PC informs me it has an activesync connection yet my hardware panel says its turned off, I try move some files around and sure enough I can gain access to my memory card, I run task manager and despite the hardware panel telling me activesync is not working the task manager knows different.
Not only has activestink decided its gonna work even though I've told it not to I HAVE AN INTERNET CONNECTION! , talk about a security risk.
WTF is in control of this pile of junk, me or the hardware/software.
Please tell me there is a fix for this, when I turn something off I expect it to stay turned off (completely) until I turn it back on again.
Now if you don't mind I'm going to lay down and have a nervous break down.
Dude you really need to chill.
These things do require some potions .
I do not know the exec in person but all HTC and most other WM 5 devices shut down completely when you hold the "standby" button for 10 seconds or more. (On the exec i believe it is a small round metal color button on one of the sides.)

Hi'
Been there, pressed that, still turns itself back on, even tried a factory reset and it still does it.
Probably micro$oft being insane again.
Perhaps buying a device with a Microsoft OS was not the right choice if you think they are insane?
The Universal doesn't have the full off feature as some other devices do, and if you use pushmail solutions, it will sometimes turn itself on if you have the screen open.
It also does this on a few other devices.
Using the device lock option on the doday screen prevents the problem, there may be other fixes by now, but that, or closing the screen are the simplest.
Some other today plugins, I forget the name, will give you an auto lock option when you press the power.
That said though, I use pushmail, and mine doesn't come on that I have noticed, but my Wizard does unless I lock it.

HTC Touch Pro power on button problem

Hi guys, I find this quite annoying and wish there is a mod for this. I don't know about other HTC Touch Pro owners but i find my fone quite sensitive.........it's "EASILY" turned on by a single "SHORT" press of the power button.
I didn't even hold it for 1 second, if i suddenly press or tap on it really quick, for not even a second, it turns on.
In case ppl don't understand and tell me that maybe my fone was on in the first place but just have the backlight off, and with a single tap on the power button, the backlight goes back on again. I knew that already. But what the problem really is, is that it's totally off, and when i tap the power on button, it turns on, i.e it vibrates and shows the welcome screen and all that other startup animation.
Is there a way to increase the delay of the finger-press on the power button? Coz it's so annoying that it gets turned on when i don't want it to, especially since this fone's weakness is that it hogs battery even though i've already applied tons of tweaks etc to lower the performance and increase battery life......
Oh and i have another problem, i find the signal kinda weak, is there a program or tweak to increase the signal?? Coz on my old phone Sony Ericsson W950i, the signal is great and I never have bad signal problems with it. But using HTC Touch Pro, i have this problem. This only happens when i'm at Uni, but it's not like they have bad reception or signal blockers there like how schools or colleges have. Just that when i'm inside buildings and there're tons of other buildings around, i can't send the txt coz of bad signals and it's bloody annoying, but using my W950i works fine.....
also I noticed that when i type a txt message using the hardware keyboard, it seems to fail to send most of the time, but only when i'm in UNI. But if i switch to the software keyboard, the one that you use ur fingers or stylus, then when i send the message it often works compare to using hardware keyboard.......any ideas?
Problem No 1: Try Touch Lock Pro
Problem No 2: Try to burn the newest RadioROM.
thx but i'm not trying to lock my phone, so i don't think TouchLock Pro is what i need.......
My Raphael turns also on after pressing the power button for a little few moment. With touchlock Pro you can prevent that you mistake your Raphael. I hope you can understand what I write in my "own" english
Ok so i've got it installed now and went through all the settings but couldn't find anything that can delay the power-on button press, I still have this problem. The app is a screen-lock app, there aren't any options regarding to power-on delays.......
plz tell me what settings etc to use.
I've never said that you can fix your problem with TouchLock Pro. With this you prevent to use your Raphael when you press your power button accidentally.
ya but that's only useful when my fone is on and it locks the phone but i'm trying to prevent my fone from turning on in the first place if i accidentally press the power on button for not even 1 second, because then it will turn on and i don't want that.
same problem here...the phone I thought I had turned off was back on, because accidently it got touched by something else in my luggage.
The only solution which to me is unsatisfactory, is to take out the battery so that it cannot power up.
C'mon...there has to be a better solution than this, no???

wow yay finally someone else other than me also report having the same problem, boy am i glad to know that i'm not the only one having this problem, i thought it was just something wrong with my fone and not all HTC Touch Pros....
i can't believe there aren't any results on Google, no forum discussions or solutions to this whatsoever. Also, nobody seemed to report this problem or come up with a solution on XDA as well as other forums i use like PPCgeekz or WMusers etc.........which is odd considering how this problem is quite annoying, that if u suddenly power on the fone by accident, it can drain battery life and god knows HTC Touch Pro has a crap battery life.............
I think that htc has done a bad job testing the powerbutton on the tp2.
There are some other things like weith, thikness and batterylife that could be improved but the powerbutton issue is realy a BIG bug.
Why they didn't make a slidebutton or a timeout between push and activation?
A dobble tap on the powerbutton could also be a solution.
The next rom shoold have a improvement about this button.
People, please react on the powerbutten problem so someone can fix this.
Thanx

Leaving the Touch Pro (Raphael) for some minutes without battery will stop the clock. So, when you put back on the battery and power up the device, the clock will display the wrong time. The time when you remove the battery.
This is hardware related.
Can produced different symptoms though.
Facts Behind the Power Button
If take a look at the inside of the powerbutton, there are 2 points making contact when you press the button. If you press it, the software will recognize this and the screen will turn off.
If you press it long enough you'll get the "QuickShutdown" message.
But, if water/alchohol/liquid gets underneath the button, the 2 points may be making contact, because water/alcohol conducts.
The button is very weak. Due to this, it may not properly work if you have used it for a long time.
As a result, despite the fact that you hit hibernate/sleep/suspend on the hardware power button = yes, the screen fades to black. But IT IS STILL ON. That explains the battery being drained.
Solution:
Open the phone hardware. Clean the power button connector manually.

i heart everyone talking about the sleep of death and to be honest, i havent really experienced this, but i definatley do have an intermitent power on and off button problem on my touch pro 2.
i read on some other forum that it could possibly be the slider that is casuing the problem. but to be honest, the button its self feels fine and looks fineand when i does work it works a treat. i havent had any water damage done to it what so ever. so im not sure , i am new too all this self help mobile stuff. so please excuse my ignorance. Ive doen the usual hard reset, button works for a few hours then calls it a day. soft rest, was working up until this week. i cant get ot to boot up again, while fiddling with the batter and a power lead. but the power button is so intermitent its driving me nuts. id be so grateful if anyone could shine any form of light on this. thanks in advance

Powering down a Universal

How exactly do you power down a Universal other than removing the battery? The "power" button only dims or switches off the display. Is there a way to make it really switch off the device?
PDA's running Windows Mobile are not designed to be powered off.
You can turn off all radio (wireless, GSM, BT), you can turn off the screen, but you can't actually turn off the device itself.
This is to keep your tasks and calendar running, otherwise it wouldn't make sense, as you could forget to turn on your device to be altered to a scheduled event.
But yes, it can be a pain. In my case, I own several phones running Windows Mobile and what I do is to periodically recharge them.
Failing to do so could in my opinion harm the built-in battery designed to keep essential data alive, when you swap your battery.
If you want to store your device for a long period (months or years), you should consider removing the main battery. Still you can suffer from a leaking internal battery. Don't quote me on this, though.
I prefer to recharge unused devices every month at least.
Cheers,
vma
Incorrect. PDAs running WM can be switched off
and you can turn the entire device off. There are ROMs that include the power off option that will turn the device off completely. I think the proggie is called PC Shut Off, have to find the exact name. I have the shut off function on my Elf and Wizard shuts off just fine. You get a warning that you may lose any unsaved info etc.
For longer storage options take the battery out.
Who wants to turn off their Uni!!!?
I have never turned off in 4 years, never!
If I dont want to recieve a call: Ignore
If I dont wanna hear sound: mute
If I dont want to have any comms on: I turn it off
Just my opinion...
Powering down the Universal
I have owned and still own several WM devices. The Uni remains the only one I cannot power down. When you press and hold the power button on the Touch Pro, it powers down after a prompt. The same with Advantage, and the TyTN 2, all of which I still own. Indeed, the Uni is the only WM device I have used (and still use) which uses what should be the power-down function to dim the display - a totally useless function in my view!
By the way, on many flights, you are told to completely switch off all electronic devices - not just put them on "flight" mode, during take-off and landing. With a Uni, how do you comply?

I simply turn off all comms and push the off button! that´s it
And any plane has going down doing this, and I travel a lot!
Nothing happens believe me
psShutXP
@enigma1nz I think you mean psShutXP. I tested it. When I use the option "Turn off" the device is in normal "sleep-mode".

Many of us know that these days planes do not crash because there is a mobile phone that is not switched off. But I am talking about compliance with instructions. I still believe it is a design flaw in the Universal. I have been hoping someone would cook a ROM that makes the power button to really power down, but it seems none as yet.
Earlier devices doesn't support complete power off because of the HW design. But you can do it in latest devices.
Just think about the power supply model of AT and ATX PC's...

Remapping keys..

Hey all,
I have a question, that may seem out of the oridinary but it does apply to me.. Ever since i sent my phone to my provider to fix an issue it has come back and the front half of the phone (the screen) has been very loose, when i press the power button i have to pretty much use both my hands otherwise the screen will move slighty and i cant press in the power button to take the phone out of standby..
My question is, would it be possible to remap the power button to something like, say the button in the middle of the phone at the bottom? (in between the answer and hang up buttons). And have it work if i hold it down for a few seconds or so?
I am just getting frustrated when i have to take my phone out of standby to check it and have this issue..
Any help would be much appreciated!
Thankyou!
you could try this: http://www.fuzemobility.com/wake-up-your-fuze-without-the-power-key/
why don't u go take it back to your provider and have them fix what they broke?
Thats an option as well right?
It is an option, only problem is is that they will have my phone for 3 weeks (as they did last time) and i will be without it. They will give me a loan phone but its an old ****ty one and i need email etc. for work so its no good.

The "Power" button gone crazy!

Hey guys. Starting yesterday, I began having an issue with the power button of my DS. At first, it didn't want to work at all (didn't respond to presses), then it "drowned" almost into the phone's body (I could barely press it), and then it began doing thing by itself!
It seems that there's something wrong with either button's contacts inside, or maybe some parts of the pressure mechanism broke, because it started to access the power menu by itself, one time after another, which made the usage almos impossible, and then it went crazy with locking the phone (as if you would press the button once), and wouldn't let the DS to sleep, as the button is "being pressed" all the time.
A few hours later it started to work properly as it should (no "going crazy" stuff), but this morning - the problem appeared again.
I really don't what to do, because I don't have anything tight enough to stick behind the button and raise it a little. What should I do?
P.S. I'm not going to disassemble/reassemble it, 'cause I need a phone lol
I don't understand, you seem to describe a physical problem (the button "drowning" in the case, that's not correct behavior !!) but you don't want to disassemble your phone. I can only advise you to take it to a repair center as it will not be solved by software...
Hey i have a Nexus S with the same problem! I was wondering if there is a way to disable it all together (software-wise).?.?
Known issue that can happen to our lovely device, my wife's device currently had the same problem, don't let your battery run out our you may not be able to restart your phone, I'd suggest that you install a sweep to wake kernel and consider a visit to the service Centre, especially if your still covered by warranty
