Hi,
I have rooted lately my xt720 and tried to install new ROMs on it,
the problem is that every ROM I try but CM 6.3 get stuck on the booting screen with the motorola icon.
And then I have to reset the phone to stock with RSD Lite...
I couldn't really find a thread about this problem...
Just to clarify are you saying that all ROMs except CM6 don't work? Or are you trying to install CM6? Which ROM are you trying to install?
The first option... Only CM 6.3 works and I want to install other ROMs
I didn't see anything about this in the guides but isn't there supposed to be an ext 4 partition on the sd card?
Do you have an ext4 partition? The other ROMs may not be compatible with it. Most (if not all) will work fine with ext2 or ext3. Which one are you trying to install?
I don't have ext partition at all...
My question is am I required to have ext partition for ROMs in general?
and how do I create ext partition at all?
In my other phone I just did it through the recovery(Amon RA's recovery). I didn't notice there's such option in OpenRecovery
No, you don't need an ext partition at all.
One thing to be careful of is that there are ROMs for two very similar phones here with very, very similar names: "Motoroi XT720" and "Milestone XT720".
The details of getting the ROMs to boot may depend on which one you're trying to install. For example there is an extra bootfix patch you have to apply to get the J.Y.Daddy's Motoroi XT720 ROMs to run on Milestone XT720.
Which ROM are you trying to install?
Yup I tried to install J.Y's ROMs, and I believe I have the Milestone model.
Any idea where I can get this patch? can I apply this patch on every Motoroi ROM or there is differenet patch for every ROM?
I believe this patch works on all of J.Y.Daddy's ROMs & on Tiger2Wander's MIUI

I have a Motorola Droid and I've been messing around with my phone for quite sometime and I've reached a road block that I can't quite figure out. I've previously and successfully put JRummy, Cyanogen and Bugless Beast on my phone, but suddenly out of nowhere, NOTHING works. I'm attempting to put a custom ROM on my phone and I've had little to no success.
These are the steps I've taken:
Start at stock 2.1
Apply ESE81_SPRecovery with RSD Lite 4.6 (Proper drivers installed)
Phone boots successfully and I can boot into SPR successfully
Move custom ROM onto SD card named as "update.zip" (not update.zip.zip)
Reboot into recovery
Wipe data & cache 3x
Go to Install and Allow update.zip
Install update.zip (UD7 specifically -- not a corrupted download as I've downloaded several times from different locations. I've also tried several different ROMs)
Install is successful
Reboot and I get stuck at the Motorola M
I wait 10 - 20 minutes and no boot screen
Pull battery, wipe data & cache again, reboot
Same issue with Motorola M
I've tried literally everything and Cyanogen, Liquid, Bugless Beast, UD7, and numerous other custom ROMs all have this same issue. I've tried wiping my SD card completely clean.
I had momentary success when I flashed back to stock 2.0.1 sbf with RSD Lite, installed SPR, then applied Liquid custom ROM but I felt daring and tried to do the same process but with UD7 and it won't load. Since then, nothing has worked.
I've tried this same process on two different computers with different versions of RSD Lite (4.6 and 4.7), different sbf files, different ROMs and tried using SPR and Clockwork (With ROM Manager Premium and different versions of Clockwork). However, none of this has worked.
When these processes don't end up working I have to reflash the stock 2.1 sbf with RSD Lite because restore won't work either.
Anyone have suggestions?
Tried a 1000mhz kernel and that didn't work either. Any other ideas?
The format of the ram needs to be formatted as an update.zip, i recommend if you want to install roms install Rom Manger. Flash Clock Work Mod and you'll be on your way.

The ROM has always been in the form of 'update.zip' when I'm using SPRecovery. It isn't update.zip.zip or anything like that.
I've tried using ROM Manager Premium to flash ROMs (predownloaded on my phone and downloaded through ROM Manager) while using Clockwork Recovery (2.5.0.1 and 2.5.0.0), and that yields the same result.
I was going to try custom Roms but i don't understand how this bootstrapping works. So I bootstrap recovery and install Rom Manger and CWR but from there is there anything special i need to do before i flash a custom rom? After i did those steps i got a lot of force closes on miui, tried to flash CM9 over miui and that messed it up it ,seams some stuff from miui was left over even thoou i did wipe data/factory reset. Do i need to bootstrap every time i flash another Rom or idk?
all bootstrap does is get you to cwm
if you can get to clockworkmod bootstrap did it's job
what system version are you using?
4.5.629, most roms are not going to work with that yet
read some guides, there are some in my collection of links

please help me,I am on 4.5.608 and my battery drains so fast, like from 100% to 70% in just 15 mins only by browsing an internet with a 2g network on opera mini,i have to charge my phone alot,so will custom ROM help me??,if yes, please tell me what cROM is compitable for my system version,i wud prefer ICS ROM's....
And will my turbo sim have problems after using a custom ROM??

I don't think this is correct—any ROM that works after flashing over 4.5.608 should still work flashed over 4.5.629.
I have ported this recovery from Motorola Defy.
Big thanks to Epsylon3 and TWRP team.
WARNING: Use it at your own risk !!!
It has been tested on my MIUI v4 (ICS) ROM.
BUGs:
- restoring system from nandroid doesn't work
- not working with GB ROMS
Download
Only recovery.
Recovery and ICS bootmenu.
You can use Only recovery package if you don't have ICS ROM installed.
This recovery only replaces recovery in bootmenu.
Anyone tested the bootmenu version with CM9?
It should be working, because I have used bootmenu in MIUI v4 from CM9.
You can also flash only recovery package. It won't delete your bootmenu, it will only replace recovery. Only recovery package won't work, if you don't have bootmenu already.
With bootmenu package replace the whole bootmenu also with recovery.
doubt: why change to this recovery?
Look into Defy thread about it or on the official site: www.teamw.in/project/twrp2

yeah, now I can see the reason...
but I think you should explain how to install it. Can we install via CWM (?), before or later install the ICS ROM (?), can we install it with a GB ROM (?), etc
I installed the recovery only version as i already have bootmenu and i dont have ics. It says it is conpleted and i just need to reboot recovery but i dont see the option from my recovery menu so i just rebooted the phone. I reentered recovery but i still have the same recovery. Choosing latest, stable or stock does not show me the twrp recovery. I then tried to install again but the same thing happens no twrp. Did i miss something?

Yeah, will both the recovery and bootmenu work with GB ROMS? I'd like it on will5's MIUI 2.5.25 GB 2.3.7. Thanks in advance!

I have only tried it with ICS. When I will have some spare time, I will try it with GB roms.
I agree that some more detailed description and "how-to" guide would be useful.
To be honest, I'm not sure what exactly is better on TWRP recovery and why would I prefer it over CWM (what's its functions?), what can it do? How it looks (some screens would be nice)?
How to install it?
I appreciate all your work, so don't take it as (rude) criticism, but as an idea for an improvement of this topic
I bet, it would be way more interesting and more people would use it, if there will be informations, I mentioned above.

Since it doesn't have specified the requirements I pushed the files with right permissions over bootmenu 0.8.6(yes old, but i didn't know about requirements), so adding missing files, patching one script I got it running, touch UI, everything nice, but but but, I fixed the backup, backed up system, then tried to restore and oh surprise, rm -rf /system and then nothing happened. The result? the recovery deleted the whole system folder. so, my progress is on a .tar nandroid that i can't restore(the usual way)...So be CAREFUL.
Sorry about that, I have tested it only with MIUIv4 (ICS) with lastest bootmenu from CM9.
I have never try to restore system from nandroid, I'm always using update.zip for restoring system.
Thanks for your feedback.
Hello,
Does anyone experienced problems to mount sdcard ?
Kind reagrds,
After I rooted my pico and installed CWM and took a nand backup. After that i tried Jaggy Dzire rom which installed perfectly but i don't know how it got bootloop. so i restored my backup and now i can't install any other rom than stock.. even if i try it will get stuck at boot logo or will go in bootloop.
i also managed to get lastet asia_india stock rom and to my wonder it works very well although i can't get link2sd work even if i try different 2nd partition formats( fat, fat32, ext3/4). on doing ext2 it will get stuck on boot.
and i'm curious about do i have nand burnt? ( pico is barely 1 week old).
and would also like to get a better ics/sense rom to use with and yeah, no overclock and stuff. as i can't get anything else than stock rom or my nand back up to boot normally !!.
Current Setup : Philz CWM || pico_asia_1.43.720.2_rev3 (rom).

I got my phone working again. Running Cyanogenmod 9 with TWRP Recovery.
Here's what i did.
Installed pico_asia_1.43.720.2_rev3.
Installed twrp-2.5.5.0.
then copy-pasted flash_erase file in system/xbin and did ADB command.
reboot.
formatted partitions all of them ( except SDCARD and SD-EXT, can't format it, error occurs as "can't mount SD-EXT || can't format with mk2fs" ).
Installed cm-9-20130304-UNOFFICIAL-pico. and reboot.
And now, Working like a charm.
Thanks for Replying.
Great Work Guys

So there is no need of ClockWorkMod Recovery to flash CM9 or 10? I thought that was necessary. I never tested cyanogenmod because I never had CWM Recovery installed. But maybe I will give a try. Now I am on NextGen 1.5 and is running great. I changed it 3 days ago. Back than I had derefas's HTC Sense 4.0a Build #8, but had some problems with this and because I have 0 Thanks, I can't post in the actual thread. I would appreciate everyone giving me some "Thanks", if that's possible, so I can post in developement threads. Anyway, wainting for akya's new build. For me it's the best ROM, although it's GingerBread, but hey, it works flawlessly. I begin to think that HTC know what they are doing since they didn't updated the Pico's software to ICS. Gingerbread run's great. Anyways, appreciate derefas, shekhutanwar, Apex-Predator and other's efforts for trying to bring ICS to Explorer. Great work guys. Keep it up!
A custom recovery is must, it's upto you which one you choose. I have TWRP because it's recommended here for our pico and is really easy to use. CWM is none less though and I forgot to mention that I had CWM prior to flashing pico_asia_1.43.720.2_rev3 and after it I flashed TWRP. And as for CM, I used to have it on my Galaxy Note and have liked it since I noob-ly flashed it on my Galaxy Y. CM is way better than Sense/Touchwiz ( although Sense has more appealing UI and TouchWiz is just b.llsh.t). Anyway, Its upto you to decide and yeah, thanks to all our devs here for there precious works.

By which method you made your sd-ext partition
Bcoz it seem to like, there is some problem with your sd-ext partition
Sent from my HTC Explorer using xda premium
At first I tried it with MiniTool Partition wizard( Space>512 Mb and tried all recommended partition format. didn't worked) and then again tried through CWM also this time it didn't worked.it showed that partition creation was successful but upon loading the card on my pc it would still displayed as 1 single partition having all the available memory space ie. 1.83 gb.
but then after installing TWRP and CM9 , I tried again through TWRP and made ext3 partition sized 512 MB and using Link2SD .working good since then.
i suppose its an issue on cwm side and the rom which was not able to detect and mount second partition.
I backed up my sgh t959v before installing custom rom. When i wanted to restore it error comes can't mount cache. please give me solution. i have already done cwm updat.
How did you back it up?
What ROM did you have previously?
What ROM did you install?
Why do you believe that the backup can be restored over the new ROM?
i backed up my phone by cwm recovery. I have custom kernel installed 5.x.x . I used the rom slimsaber 4.4.2 . Help me cause I'm not a pro like u. Thanx in advance

My first guess is that the kernel from Slim doesn't partition the disk the same way as most other ROMs for our phone.
If you can be very specific about what you've done and what you want to accomplish, we can probably get you there. ROMs and versions will be very important

Both Roms use different partitions. Kj6 is bml and saber is mtd. It ain't gonna happen.
In order to restore you'll first need to flash back to stock kj6. Then install antonx's kernel (or blastoff) and then you'll be able to restore using cwm.
That's about the long and short of it. All ICS, JB, and KK ROMs use a low-level way ("MTD") of accessing the internal "disk" that isn't compatible with the older "BML" method found in OEM ROMs and other Froyo and many GB ROMs. Additionally, Dao's recent KK ROMs use a subtly different version of MTD than other MTD ROMs.
While you could restore /system and /data from one major release to another, this is not recommended. It's dicey going up in version and then restoring (for example, from ICS to JB), and likely impossible going back. A tool like Titanium Backup (Pro) can help, but sometimes you're just stuck.
The general way of dealing with an internal "disk" change is (not including backup/restore):
Boot to recovery
Install the new kernel (can be "flash the ROM")
Reboot to recovery
Format all internal partitions
Install the ROM
Boot into the ROM
You generally will need app-level backups (for example Titanium Backup) to transition your data.
Going from BML to MTD worked on Team Acid MTD ROMs, such as CM9. I can't comment on other ROMs.
To go from MTD to BML a full re-flash using heimdall or the like is recommended.
To go between Froyo and Gingerbread absolutely requires re-flash -- see other threads for details.
