[Q] Automatic Downloading of Images in HTML E-Mails - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone figured out a way to get WP7 devices to automatically download images in HTML e-mail messages without having to tap the "Download Pictures" links in the messages? I've read several threads on this site regarding that issue, but haven't found anyone yet offering a solution. My HTC HD7s is not in any way unlocked, but I have no problem doing that to it if a possible fix for this MEGA-ANNOYING issue involves using some kind of registry hack to get WP7 to do what Android and iPhone ALREADY do with no problem whatsoever!
Thanks,
Dennis

To me it makes sense for the images not to be downloaded for all HTML emails by default, just those you choose.
I get email from time to time thats rammed full of images and I reckon I'd rather download my emails quicker, without images and then just load them on a per-email basis when I think its necessary...

I hear yah. It is pretty annoying. In older versions of windows mobile there were settings to change this. Emails just look much better when open them and the images are there... I mean unlimited data why not they would download in the background when email is syncd

Notifications for emails in folders other than the inbox.

I've been looking around for some type of software (since WM5 and WM6 don't seem to have the ability built in) that will let me know when I've gotten an email in a folder other than my inbox.
All of the people in my office have separate folders, and all of their email is sorted into their respective boxes automatically in a server-side rule. I'd always have to manually check those folders in windows mobile (I've got an 8125 running XDA Mobile 6 r4) every time I looked at my phone.
While searching around I found a software package called watchflag (www.watchflag.com or m.watchflag.com for the direct download). It didn't have this option at first, but I asked their support about it and they actually wrote it into the code! It'll play different notifications depending on who it's from or what the subject line is, and it checks all folders, including subfolders (just be sure to follow all of their directions!). So if you've been looking for something to alert you on new email in subfolders (the boss [or the wife] emailing you and you have a separate folder for them), this software will work great.
Just wanted to spread the word as I looked high and low and haven't found anything else that does this out there!
thanks for the post, nice ap. probably shouldnt put your email in plain site like that[username]
I've been waiting a long time for this! Thanks!
Looks interesting. I'm looking for something subtley different - I use FlexMail to access a private IMAP account and I'd love to find something which hooks the standard notification process, so, for instance, my HTC Home new mail count will increment for mail received in Flexmail/IMAP. (At the moment I have Outlook mirroring the IMAP account and checking for mail every 5 minutes to flag new arrivals, but that's wasteful of resources...)
Does anyone know of something that allows you to hook the standard notification procedures for custom events?

Limit SMS History Display?

I've tried searching but I can't find an answer to this for the HD2.
Is there a way of limiting the number of messages displayed in an SMS conversation's history? I'm having to wait a good 10 seconds for all the past texts of some contacts to load before I can start to type, which is obviously extremely annoying. Limiting the amount it displays to 20 or so would be absolutely fine.
Anyone have any ideas?
This is a good idea, at the moment I am trying to keep on top of my messages by deleting older ones. I find it very strange that there is such a huge delay when there are loads of messages in a conversation. Whats the 1ghz processor doing? Having a tea break?
Oh ? I thought I was the only one who suffured of the loading speed in the SMS history.
On my last and beloved Cruise, the history was splitting in a few pages.
Someone know how to make it the same way ?
A solution for this would be nice!
Yes ! Perhaps we should try to post it in general XDA forum ?
Would like this also, now I'm using the old message view again (not threaded) because the other one is way to slow
I need this too...
Please, find a way to split threaded sms like in old TF3D!!!!
I hope HTC knows about this problem and will release a fix! Just write HTC about it...the more the merrier!
correct! Please report it to HTC so that they will fix this.
For the moment you can use this "workaround":
Open the inbox for this contact and try immadiately to hit the "send" button and answer the question "...really want to send an empty message.." witn "no"....that's it.
the keyboard is directly available and you can answer
i wonder if its possibly something to do with the small thumbnail images on every message thats slowing it down????? maybe removing these may make a difference, anybody know how to do that though?? lol
I've tried it and that has no effect on the speed

booo! lol i`v reduced the text size to smallest and that seems to have helped a bit, i havent got many messages right now i`l know soon if it really makes an impact when i dont delete my messages.
forget that comment above dont think it makes a blind bit of difference lol

Just click
All Messages > Menu > Settings > Traditional Mode
The traditional mode separate the sent messages and the received messages.
But if one has lot of messages from the same contact, this will still be slow.
Solution
My solution for this problem is that once a day a sync with windows my phone and archive the old messages there or save old messages with jeyo mobile companion, thus leaving in the phone a minimum amount of messages. until HTC solves the problem this works for me
I'm archiving old messages on MS MyPhone too for the time being. An acceptable workaround for me for the time being.

Cannot open exchange *.eml files bug solved in froyo ?

Hi,
Sorry to open a new topic but I've googled during hours and didn't find a response.
As some of you know, android 2.1 has a very annoying bug: It's unable to open eml files.
This prevent to read attached or forwarded exchange emails (*.eml files).
Does froyo solve this?
Can someone having a Froyo device test this ? (just attach an email to another one in exchange and send it to yourself) ie do a forward but with mail attached, not embedded
Google just said "enhanced exchange support for froyo"
I know that Touchdown for exchange can do this, but I would prefer a built in solution to propose Android as a real enterprise alternative.
Thanks a lot !
And this is a busniess phone?
I hope they get this working as this OS is useless to our company. Granted Google doesn't care about a small 15 person company but I would love to start using my Evo for work and have to carry around my old Treo 800w just so I can read a forwarded email.
Yes I know the work around is to just have them reply and change who it's going to but I can't do that for everyone that emails me because Google can't get this fixed.
nobody having a 2.2 can test this please ?
I have an EVO, upgraded to 2.2 yesterday. Opening .eml attachments still isn't working. Make sure you post a comment and vote for this bug on google project site:
goo.gl/I5DF
I can confirm the issue.
We just deployed a bunch of EVO's and some are having this issues and other are not.
When you forward an attachment lets say a .wav file it repackages the entire message and text into a .eml that the EVO can't open.
You can open it on the desktop.
All are running 2.2.
Damn sad if you ask me. Maybe it's a Microsoft thing and they need licensing to open a .eml extension.
Wow this is a huge issue for us that we were not aware of.
To clarify the eml format is only used when you forward a message with an attachment from the Android device when an exchange server is used. Forwarded messages from outlook are fine.
Apparently this has been an unresolved issue for some time.
Can post the link to but do a search for eml and android.
Looks like you can control this behavior in Exchange.
Anyone else know of a solution?

Doesn't seem to be a proprietary MS file format. See: http://filext.com/faq/decode_eml_files.php
A dev would probably be able to create an app to read these files pretty easily. Unfortunately, I'm not a coder.

Picture & Video Messaging On WP7??

I remember reading somewhere that its not possible to do video or picture messaging on windows phone 7 is that a carrier issue or did microsoft leave that out? will that be implemented in the future?
picture messaging works fine, its video messaging that is missing. Not sure when its gonna get added. Seems that was MS decision (though carriers could have pushed for it).

Picture messaging works fine, you can receive video messages, but you cannot send them (except that you can forward video messages that you have received).
Not on this phone
Interesting, no my htc surround on at&t does not receive video messages not to mention not being able to send them. This is my biggest beef with wp7. A good laugh at lunch would be appreciated. Dumb phones can do this. Is it too lowbrow for Ms and their metro UI? It may seem trite but the wp7 is a visual medium. Video messaging goes hand in hand with social networking and is sorely missed.
Have most WP7's always been able to receive video messages, or is that something that came with the NoDo update? I don't remember it ever working and the next day after installing the updates I received one.

There is no way a carrier pushed for the lack of video messaging in WP7, when every other smartphone OS on every other carrier does it.
Video messaging is never an issue for them because there are size limitations in MMS and most if not all phones compress (rather heavily) the video, anyways, just as they do teh photos.
It just sucks because a lot of people still have feature phones and Picture/Video MMS functionality is a must for communicating with these people.
Ask winpho support on twitter & they said they had no info when vid msgs were coming...Pisses me off.....

MMS messages can be sent & received but they just show a static image & don't play. This has been the case since before NoDo.

[Q] email images not loading. stock email client

Hi all,
Have been searching wildly for a fix to this and im reaching out for help.
Scenario: Standard email client in honeycomb 3.01 with an exchange account setup.
Issue: embedded images/ html images do not show in body of email. Please note that the issue does not rectify when pressing the show pictures button as nothing changes. All you will see is the box where the image would be and the blue question mark. The images seem to be in the attachments tab and i have the choice of view or save.
Has someone come up with a reason this happens and how to fix it?
Note also that the same exchange account is set up on my froyo htc desire and have no problems at all.
Thanks in advance
Im taking it that with no replies that no one is having this issue as described. Any help in relation to this original post would be greatly appreciated.

Ive noticed the same thing. We use html email sigs and out logo will do that. What i did was saved a copy of the logo ( same filename and everything) to my downloads folder. That fixes it for about 70%. Im guessing its an html render issue.
Ive got the same issue with my exchange email. All I see are boxes with blue question marks in the center. It's pretty aggravating that my EVO running 2.2 can display the same emails and images fine but 3.1 can't.
Has anyone tried another email client that you could recommend?

Touch Down works nice but I like the layout of the stock email client more. It bugs me that all apple products are fine in this area but android cant seem to get html email down..
I can't understand how i can have a froyo device and it works perfectly show all images etc as it should and have a honeycomb device that can't.
Just if someone ask's yes i do press show pictures and no it does not do anything. the actual emails grab all images and show them as attachements. I live on my email for work and this is to be honest CRAP effort of an email client for something so simple to not work.
Im asking anyone out there for any suggestions of a fix relating to this issue to help.
