Annoying headset switching to mono - HTC Inspire 4G

I have an annoying problem with my Inspire. I am running the latest CM7. No matter, because it did this on any/all iterations of CM7.
When listening to music with a stereo headset, every now and then, the phone has a glitch where it will for no reason turn the output signal from a stereo signal into what sounds like a mono. I have to pause the music, unplug my headphones (until the headphones icon disappears), then plug it back in again, which fixes it. It does this often enough to be an annoyance.
I've already tried different headphones, and it does it to all of them, so the issue is with the phone.
Does anyone else have this problem, and, if so, can you tell me how to fix it?
Thanks!

Just out of curiosity have you tried a fresh install? Almost every issue I've run into I've been able to cure by wiping everything and starting fresh.

I haven't tried that so far with this phone, although I'm 100% certain it didn't help (as I'm on my second Inspire, the first one's vibrator was defective, and it used to do the same thing).

Ugh, annoying! It just did it 2 times already since then!

Have you tried a non CM based rom?

Now that is the one thing I have not tried. However, I only have 2 choices, right? It's either a CM7 based ROM or a Sense based ROM; all of them are based off those two.

Pretty much. But you can flash a sense rom and then run the no sense script if you want to try a sense rom but don't like sense

[Q] Why is it so hard to find a stable rom?

I have tried virtually every type of rom in search of one that is stable, and I can't find one! I've tried froyo sense, gingerbread sense, CM6.1, CM7, MIUI 2.2/2.3. I don't even bother to try overclocking anymore, but all of the roms suffer from random reboots and random app crashing. I'm starting to believe there is some kind of hardware problem with my phone as I never had this many problems with my original desire or the hero before that.
It's not like I do anything crazy with my phone either, I run:
2 gmail accounts
twitter
linkedin
weather app
documents to go
no games
Am I alone with this, or are there others out there in a similar situation? All I want (ideally) is a vanilla 2.2 or 2.3 rom that is just STABLE.
I have tried alot of the ROMS for this phone. I really don't have any problems at all, since going to the MIUI ROM I haven't had a crash yet. And before that maybe only 1 or 2 a week.
I have yet to have stability issues... Are you wiping all user data, clearing cache, and clearing dalvik before flashing a new ROM
I have had random quirks here and there, but no more then I did on the stock rom. I had more fcs on the stock rom then i have had with any custom rom I have tried.

i'm with you on this....i have had very, very few force closes with stock or cooked roms, but i did have lots of random lag with the stock rom. This is initially what made me finally root and flash. I had quite a few small problems with MIUI and CM7, but have had nothing but great things to say about CoreDroid.
I have had absolutely no problems with the two roms I've been flip flopping between (CM7 and Cognition). Every time I change though, I make sure to do a reset, cache wipe, dalvik wipe to make sure I'm doing a clean install. I'm not 100% sure what doing all that means, but a lot of the devs specify it in their instructions, and I'm sure they know more than me!
Maybe get back to stock everything, and then try flashing either CM7 or Cognition? Although I hear others are stable as well, these are the only two I've tried.
(I'm using cognition right now, but I am not running it overclocked. I scaled it back down to 1000 with setcpu.)
To those who asked, yes, I'm wiping cache/dalvik, etc. Every time I flash a new rom. I can handle the occasional app crashing or FC, but the thing that drives me nuts is when everything locks up and drops back to the boot screen (not a "full" reboot).
Ah well, maybe i'll try cognition or Core and see how things go.
I keep hoping an AOSP rom will pop up because the best rom i had ever used was oxygen for the original desire. Rock solid, and fast.
I can't help but to wonder what your exact flash method is. Because, like the others here, I too have had no problems with any of the roms at all. I've gone a whole month without a single FC while using 3 or 4 different roms.

I'm behind on the terminology, but how is CM7 not AOSP? I thought AOSP stood for Android Open Source Project or something. AKA "pure", vanilla android.
Also, I think you might have a lemon of a device. If you're sure you are doing everything right and following instructions, I would see if I coul exchange your inspire.

I've been using CM7 since I got my Inspire in the first of March and I've not had any problems. That's with 120 apps and overclocked to 1300-1500MHz, too. I think you should exchange yours for a new one.

I too have tried a few other ROMs and always come back to CM7. I love the AOSP feel (vanilla Android is AWESOME) and I'm overclocked to 1.2Ghz and CM7 never FCs or resets itself. I had a few FCs and resets on other ROMs which made me miss the CM7 experience and simplicity. Yes Sense is the nicest Android skin but nothing IMO beats the experience CM7 gives you on this device!

As for the op's problem, I have minor issues occasionally with some roms but nothing like what you are experiencing.

Sense 3.0 / GB issue

Why is it on every sense 3.0/gb rom I try I run into the same issues... When I answer a call it is automatically on speakerphone.. random rings from the phone... when i plug/unplug the phone from a usb port on a computer it goes crazy playing a ringtone.. I am also not the only one who has this issue. I am formatting everything correctly and have the appropriate radio/ril.

Well, sense 3.0 wasnt specifically designed for this phone, so any ports are going to be just that...ports.
There may very well be bugs still present and unresolved.
I don't think it's gb-specific only, as I run a gb-sense 2.1-based ROM and have never experienced what you are describing.
I'm running Leedroid with the sense 3.0 patch and haven't experienced the issues you describe.

you might wanna add which roms and radios you have been trying, that might help solve your issue, also have you checked for known bugs of that rom?
Im running coredroid 6.8 and have the issue with the speakerphone automatically being on shen i answer a call. Any ideas?
Well, the fact is *every* rom I have tried has issues: sync issues or fc issues or gps issues or calendar issues or sound issues or battery issues and so on... There just is no perfect rom...

You may not be the only one, but I am experiencing none of these issues with Coredroid and stock AT&T radio. Nothing like that. It has been very stable for me.
I figured out the problem must have been HW related... starting having the problem on stock roms as well. So warranty one is on the way

Didn't mean it that way. It goes without saying that porting a rom is really complex...100s of hours or work. Because of the complexity, don't expect a custom rom to be completely clean.

HTC Inspire 4G Bluetooth Audio Skip

Okay so this is a weird issue. When using the stock ROM for my Inpsire 4G (or any variation of sense ROMs) I get this occasional audio skip on my car's bluetooth audio. The phone is connected to both the phone and the media features of my Pioneer AVIC-X930BT the audio sounds absolutely fine then all of a sudden theres a drop in the audio for about half a second and the music has to catch up. Its not really a skip more of a lag. This issue does NOT exist with completely different ROMs such as CM7. In CM7 I have no issues whatsover. What could be causing this and how can I fix it? I absolutely LOVE Sense ROMs and have tried the latest Android Revolution HD (almost fixes it) and RCMixHD 1.5 and all have the same issue. Its not my SD card because as I said it works fine in CM7 however I do not like the look of CM7 and the "sense like" widgets are not to my liking. Thanks so much and I realllly hope there is a fix for it. Perhaps a custom kernel would do it? Or a different radio? Thanks.
P.S. Yes I know it works for some of you with no issue...but sadly I've been having this problem for a while and it's been bothering me a LOT.

The main issue is the BT stack that is used with the roms. CM7 uses a different one if I remember right. So not alot you can do unless you want to rebuild the rom yourself

[Q] Crackle/Static problem while on call with any AOSP Rom, please help!

Hey everyone,
I've been using different roms from XDA for awhile now, first on my HTC Legend and over the last few months on my Infuse, so I'm not really new to this.
Here's my problem:
Whenever I use an AOSP rom (Miui 2.3.2b (Galnet), Miui 4.0, Miui Shock N' Awe, CM7, CM7 Nightlies etc.) I get a weird crackling/static noise when making calls (not when on speaker phone). Every time before I install one of these roms I use Odin and go back to stock, wipe everything properly, fix permissions etc.
I've tried disabling DSP, enabling DSP, uninstalling DSP, I've tried every setting possible, I've also tried Voodoo Sound etc. Nothing seems to work, in call volume doesn't make a difference and I've literally tried every single modem currently available and including the newest one UCLB3. I've spent hours googling and searching for an answer and nothing seems to work. I've tried OC'ing, under clocking, fresh installs etc.
Does anyone have any ideas? I can confirm that sound works fine on Zeus, Aeon, Revolution, stock roms etc but that's not what I want to use (personal preference) so it can't be hardware related, the only thing I can think of is the kernel. Is there an AOSP kernel that will fix this issue or even something I can try? The community v8 one wouldn't work with Miui and I don't think Entropys will either.
Please HELP! I'm desperate! I know there's a few others with the same problem.
I'm thinking hardware problem. There was a thread about this waaaaay back and one guy said he got rid of by running a decent strength magnet along the ear peice. Something about metal shavings or whatever. I never tried it tho and I still encounter the crackles every one in a long while. Just some input.
Try a pizza taco sometime, if you don't know what it is, look it up then
I don't think it can be hardware related, it ONLY happens on those roms, it doesn't happen if I hook up headphones or put it on speaker phone, it also doesn't happen if I play music etc.
IMO it has to be something that comes with those roms or the kernel it uses.

Hellfire Phoenix V2.3 p999 [cm7.2 /super tweeked] - audio/music stops randomly...

Hi,
Firstly, want to thank the dev for this great rom. I recently switched back from ICS because I couldn't take the lag/wanted a fully functioning operating system.
The main problem I' having with this rom is that when I'm listening to music/audio files they'll stop for no apparent reason. The only thing I can think of is that maybe they're stopping when I go in and out of service. When I either unlock and press play or switch apps and press play they start again with not problems. I've found this to happen in multiple audio player (Poweramp and BeyondPod being the two main ones I use).
Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is incredibly frustrating.
Thanks very much for your hard work.
btw: the reason I didn't post this in the related dev forum is that I don't as yet have enough posts to do so...so no flaming please).
Nobody is gonna flame you for posting a question on the questions forum.. (unless you didn't search first)
I've had this happen to me as well with different ROM's. I don't believe its ROM specific. My problems were related to some of my notification settings. I also switched from the standard player to UberMusic. It's old but does the job well.

Can't be too careful when it comes to flames.
I thought it might be my notification settings but I've tried pretty much every permutation of those. Can't really bring myself to switch from PowerAmp (paid) and BeyondPod(free) is the best podcast player I've found to date...I might try reinstalling the rom, maybe I didn't wait long enough before using it?

Does the problem exist if you were to use Google Music? If it does, then it's most definitely a problem with the ROM. Try a re-install and if that doesn't clear it up, you might want try out a different ROM to see if it's the ROM or not.

Sadly, or happily as I love PowerAmp, it does occur with Google Music too. Never had this problem on eaglseblood gb (which I mainly used before trying a few ICS roms) but switched as their GB rom is no longer maintained. Will try re-flashing. Hopefully that helps.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Yeah, i just recently discovered this issue too, and it kind of bugs me.
Still haven't found a way around this. Tried reflashing the rom which didn't help. Just tried flashing faux's 49b1 to see if that helps. The dalvik cache is being very slowly rebuilt. The newer kernel (the one included in hellfire 2.3) has a MUCH faster loading time (at least upon first load). Will post if this helps with the sound issue.

Well. I'm still having this problem. I've tried multiple kernels, multiple roms and even completely formatted my phone (all partition including boot sector). No luck. Truly aggravating because aside from this issue, I love this rom. Very smooth/fast and stable. Not sure I can live with this audio problem though as it's incredibly frustrating.
If anyone else has encountered this problem and found a solution, please post. Thanks,
I just dl the old music player apk here see if it helps. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrtstudio.music
Also does it occur both when using headphones and not? I had issue with a set of headphones with a break in the wire, which would make the phone appear as though the headset was unplugged and plugged back in, which stopped playback constantly.
Let me know if this helps any.

Thanks for replying.
I'd wondered if that might be the reason too. I know it gains with different headphones as I've tried four different pairs. I'll have you try it without any and see. I did try disabling the setting for stop playback upon removal of headphones with no success. I'll try without headphones in and see. I'll have to flash the Rom again as I've been trying a few others out.

Sadly, no. I've tried playing music without headphones attached and the same problem occurs. Random stops. I go into whichever application (it happens in everyone single one I've tried) was playing an audio file and it starts up right where it left off when I press play.
It's worse now actually in that it occurs with whatever all roms. So now I'm left wondering if there's a micro fracture in the headphone sensor that only started acting up at the exact time I put Hellfire Phoenix 2.3 on my phone or if, somehow, it corrupted some base setting on the phone that even reformatting it can't get rid of.
Terribly aggravating. Debating taking it in for service but I need to find a Wind factory rom before I can do so. Think I saw one in the forums a few months ago. hopefully the link's still active.

I've reinstalled my phone's stock rom (WIND Mobile).
This seems to have sorted out the issue. I'm going to try reinstalling Hellsfire Phoenix in a few hours if it doesn't happen again (I'm playing music nwo and will continue for a couple hours to make sure).
I'm now wondering if maybe this was some sort of error caused by downgrading from an ICS build (hadn't occured to me previously but that's when I started having this issue and it didn't matter which GB rom I tried after that)? Hopefully this will be the end of these problems and I can enjoy Hellsfire Phoenix as it was great aside from that issue.
I'll post in a couple days if all goes well....or if it doesn't.

Well, sad to say that I still had that problem after trying HFP 2.3 again. So I went back to stock. This time it happened on stock too so I have to assume it's a hardware problem. I guess I just lucked out (well, poor luck in this case) that it went for four hours Friday without halting playback.
Better take it in for warranty service while it's still covered.
At least it seems unlikely that any rom/kernel combo was to blame now.
