Good notices, we're into the GT-I9XXX group
It sound great..Just don't know even will get the update, when will get the update from sammy?hmm...
possible next year
the article is not officially announced by samsung...it is stated only a RUMOR...
Still, some music to the ears...
I have a Samsung Omnia 2 GT-i8000, a device based on Windows Mobile 6.5. Some time ago (May?) Samsung Italy officially announced that they were going to release in the next month a firmware with WM 6.5.3. All community of i8000 is still waiting for such update. So I would not put my hand on fire after Samsung announcements.
samsung and software update doesnt really go together . heck , we dont even have GB firmware for most region. i am not really hoping for ICS anyway.
Now all i am praying for is feature complete CM , that way we can have long term support hopefully.
no offense...
but i want to say that samsung has fu*** all gt i9003 users...
we cant get cm7 with camera working,,no miui..and there is no dev interested in us gti9003...

I hope with ICS Samsung will implement drivers based on new graphic structure and won't backport old deprecated drivers.
In this case we will take hope on official support of CM7 (CM9?)

Hi All,
I am using my Galaxy 3 on Froyo for sometime now and now I would like to upgrade to Gingerbread. I am not allowed to post under Development threads. Hence I have this post here.
Please let me know if there is any Gingerbread ROM available.

No, there's not such ROM... developpers still work on Froyo... the others wander whether G3 supports or not Gingerbread and whether Samsung will support or not Gingerbread on G3...
Samsung won't release gingerbread for our phones, I can guarantee you that. We're lucky if we get froyo.
First, is the hardware limitation
Second, there's no point for samsung to officially release it to our phone. We're not paying them anything anymore, It's much more profitable to release a new phone with gingerbread in it. That's how biz-nes works.
@thom47 there is NO hardware limits... if phone runs froyo it can also run gingerbread
Sent from my GT-I5800 using XDA App
I know it can run it technically and people can cope with it, but can Samsung agree to the performance of it is a different thing. But well, we're not getting it anyways so let's not get our hopes up

well if we would have good devs they could port it to sg3 from sgs, i mean how hard could it be?? (YES, i know VERY hard)...
There are not many significant features/improvements in Gingerbread over Froyo..I would be happy to get official Froyo soon..and maybe Cyanogen Mod later

I agree,
a stable Froyo + some usable custom ROM is much more important then still a newest version.
There are not significant advantages - and our hardware (no 3d acceleration, no JIT) has its limits

Why should JIT be a matter of hardware?
MAD-Team has enabled JIT for the G5 too...
Anyway it's very cool to have gingerbread because of the lock animation

That makes sense -- Samsung has really been surprisingly good on Samsung. The hardware are great and I think the software is getting better too. But as regards the 18 months update time frame Google mentioned -- I think it would be hard for the companies settle down on a consensus for that. Practical implementation is going to be a head-ache for companies with users complaining almost everywhere on blogs about that. let's see, how it goes.
BTW, it's nice to see Indians keeping a grip on latest tech, for ex. Google I/O that happened just yesterday. Indian tech is going greaT!

I just updated it on the website, thanks for the bringing it out here.
@itskapil:
Ah, I used to run a a tech blog; down for maintenance, anyway... yea, Indians have been everywhere; and quite well informed.
BTW, when the companies have joined the fast update program, I guess they have the needed resources (developer groups) to work on the updates. Who wants to spoil reputation, eh? Thats just like holding on to the drivers, custom apps and recompiling the kernel, stress/beta testing them and release. Simple like the centos or redhat ones we see...
I guess the 18 month timeframe covers android releases in that frame, not how long it takes the update to come through. So, guys stop ****ting about how long they take to release the updates.
very good news.. i own one i9003, and after the rumors of a gingerbread update, this is hte first offical claim of update for this device, the i9000 is better and well supported, but this is a good phone indeed, and with gingerbread will be even better.
Oh, atleast they have responded now!! Thank god!!
Why are the Galaxy SL threads in the Galaxy S I9000 forums, and Fascinate/Vibrant are not? Galaxy SL should have it's own section, since it's pretty much different device with another GPU and LCD screen.

Wonder what this is going to mean for future development for CM roms.
Why would it mean anything? Do you really think Cyanogenmod is his day job? He'll keep working on it in his spare time, like he has since day 1.
Of course, even if Cyanogen had to drop out completely, CM has a whole team of people behind it, not just him.
I know it's not his day job, but it may be a conflict of interest with his new one.

Why? Cm7 and custom roms in general are used by a tiny percentage if the phone-buying population. It's difficult to think about, but a good 95% of people that own android phones have no idea what rooting is, will never update the operating system even if an ota us pushed, and possibly don't even know their phone its android. All they know is that their phone is T-Mobile and it lets them check facebook. If they're feeling really adventurous, they might even download angry birds.
These are the kinds if people that Samsung makes its money off of.

you all are thinking in 2D. cyanogen mod will become the "test" environment for samsung. they get free "testing" from tons of users and then they will package and deliver the final product on their phone without having to root. that would make the most sense to me so they should encourage cyanogen mod development.

ya that would be nice. i guess we'll see how samsung behaves. they can be like redhat that offers fedora for free but then they have the enterprise version redhat that they sell. or they can be like oracle who bought our sunmicro and then pretty much ended open office. But i guess open office now diverged into libre office so its not all bad. i guess cyanogen will continue one way or another.
CyanogenMod is a self running system. Download AOSP and convert it to specific devices.
Plus he's one Guy out of a whole team. I'm sure he doesn't touch every device. I wonder if he even touched the G2x?
Although I think this is good news. Perhaps they are just working with Samsung to setup an automated system like the CM team have now... nightlies across multiple devices running the latest Google code. Just tweaked here and there.

I understand the hate towards Samsung during its Behold II days but since then it has gotten better and better until they became the most innovative Android manufacture recently. Their processors continue to own the competition. Everyone wants to get a hold of their displays and NAND memory and every single itteration of TW has gotten less and less intrusive. Their most recent flagship phone, the GSII has already received numerous updates. I don't know what type of update tine frame you would like our phones to get but quite frankly, all update timeframes suck if you buy a US branded phone. If you want to blame someone for our updates then blame our carriers. Updates over seas come out in a timely fassion. The European Sensation has already received 2 but the US Sensation hasn't received one.
So I ask you. What company in your opinion is good with updates and why?

Very little hope of that too. He's got no time for the i9003 and its just lying around somewhere in his house. This phone is one of those unfortunate ones that no one seems to care about or even remember. ROM Manager still doesn't recognize it, most forums don't even acknowledge its existence and Samsung doesn't give two rats about it.
You either have to live with GB, wait for someone to port CM9 (unlikely) or maybe IF Samsung decide to throw a 4.0.x update at it later or just move on to another device that is actually popular and supported by the larger dev community.
I personally got frustrated and went for the Galaxy Nexus but I still have my i9003 and care about it. Its a pretty good device but one of the least supported. The Optimus Black, Droid X and other similar phones have plenty support. Even the super cheap low-end LG, HTC and Samsung phones have more support than the i9003. Its just a mystery why! Samsung just didn't release this device in enough countries.

Actually, they just pushed back the release date for ICS recently. We were supposed to get it in mid-march, but the WT19i will get it around end of may/early june. One one hand that sucks, but given what I saw on Sammy's Touchwiz version of ICS it could be for the best. Sorry have not played with the Xperia line, don't know how Sony UI is. They seemed a little more concerned with refinement. But all OEMs are dragging their feet on this.

Better hope for a custom ICS ROM for your phone than from Samsung

U r not getting the point ...when Samsung releases a rom or the libs , XDA devs can work full-on on custom roms like cm9,aokp etc ...no one cares for Samsung's roms we want the libs and some base ics rom to start off with...
Our cm9 port is yet to get a working camera and everyone is going crazy asking for ETAs
you know you are rooted when you use XDA more than FB
don't think that petition can solve the problem.... :-(
I have the Galaxy tab (first generation).
What Samsung said about Honeycomb: The size of the screen, 7''. (!?!?!?!?!?!?!?)
What Samsung said about ICS: Hardware. (!?!?!??!)
What I say for samsung: No more. Asus and Sony, wait for me.
PS: Samsung will do nothing, the only thing that wants is MONEY, MONEY AND A LOT OF MONEY.
True... At least they should release libs and files

You obviously have much better understanding then some of those who are new XDA, most likely because you own a device directly affected. Of course I and evolsam don't know all the nuances like you do. I myself only just noticed the SGS2 ICS ROMs are not as refined yet as the GSS ICS ROMs. The Galaxy S has had to port over most of the ROMs. Which has gone over quite well so why would it not seem like an answer for other Galaxy devices like the Ace and W. Barring an explainantion, the need for code source release in these cases is not something that is readily apparent.
Anyways I now know, and of course I'll sign, anything to aid the devs. That's all you needed to say or anyone needed to say. Maybe more like evolsam will then too.
