[Q] CM7 camera: no full screen pictures - HTC Desire S

(not able to post on developers forum yet)
I just switched to CM7.1 yesterday.
I tried out the camera and noticed that the pictures I take are not full screen.
Pictures are 1936 X 2592 pixels on CM7.1 (stable) instead of 2592 x 1552 on Sense stock ROM.
The photos have more pixels but do not show full screen on the Desire S.
Is this a feature or a bug?
Cheers Stroom.

Anyone can confirm this behavior?
To show pictures on the phone I don't like that they are not full screen.
(Or can anyone with more "posting power" get this to the developer thread?)

If you would have tried a little, you would have seen that with 4mp (16:9) you get the resolution you suggested

Thanks!
I tried more than a little but not enough apparently.
The resolution setting was not visible (have to scroll down in rightmost camera menu).
After your comment I looked again and yes this is the solution of course.

I didn't check resolution within the cam, I just took a picture and checked the resolution at the gallery within details of the picture.

[Q] 5mp Camera quality (poor)

I took several indoor and outdoor pictures yesterday, and the setting was on 5mp. The results were very disappointing. I looked at the files, and it was obvious why. They were 1mb or less. I did not find any other setting (like"fine") as on other devices (N1)?
Pictures on my N1, which has a lower mp rating, are much better. I smell a rat here.
I also took some 720p videos. A 5 minute file is 275 mb, which seems a bit lite. I will see how it looks on HD TV. Similar files from still camera with 720p HD mode look pretty good.

I think the quality is pretty good but the autofocus or shutter is a bit laggy. Reminds me of digital cameras 10 years ago....

They don't look bad on the MT4G screen, but on computer - (especially if you zoom even a little) - not as good as N1...
Update - I checked settings and the the camera was set to wide, so it apparently just crops the pictures to fit, so what you get is about 3.3 mp. Change to to 4:3, and the resolution goes up to 5mp.
I will take a few pictures set this way and see how they compare.
How about we start posting pics in this thread to see what everyone is talking about.
Seeing is believing!
Here is a pic I took yesterday while watching bad boys 2.
*Edit* this pic is 2592 x 1456 which = 3.8 mp and it's set to widescreen, setting it to 4:3 standard gives you 2592 x 1952 which = 5.1 mp
That looks pretty good! No? Or can it be better?

I don't know... I would easily trade ease of use (nice functions, dedicated shutter button, face recognition, LED flash) over many of the cameras, which may take slightly better photos.

I watched that video last night and I agree that the video and picture capability of the MT4G is great!
I think people just have to "try" to find something to complain about.

There wouldn't be any difference in quality. Widescreen is simply a normal 4:3 that is digitally cropped on the top and bottom. Therefore, of course there are few pixels (lower resolution).

yeah but some people complained about the hd2 when it would tale widescreen mode pics that it isnt true 5mp it was 4mp and if u took off widescreen mode then it was true 5mp. so thats what i am going based off of. but i still think the pictures i take in widescreen mode on the mt4g are great in widescreen mode. i have no complaints
Is there any way to boost the frames per second for the video? I've been comparing photo and video quality pretty heavily with an iPhone 4, and overall the MT4G would be "better" IF the autofocus lag was fixed, and the fps for video was 30 fps.
I find the colors and auto-levels to be superior on the MT4G, but the fps thing is really annoying.
Looks like this camera has the same problem the G2 camera has.
Download the trial of Camera 360 and set the JPEG compression to a more reasonable level. The default camera app on the G2 compresses the everloving CRAP out of the pics and makes them look TERRIBLE.
I've taken some pics with the G2 camera via Camera360 that were remarkably improved over the stock Camera app.
The pictures at 4:3 were better, but the camera 360 pictures and features are better still. Can it be set up to open with the camera button?
Update - it must be the compression in the OEM camera app - would be nice if it could be turned off. The uncompressed Camera 360 shots are twice the size at the same resolution settings. When you look at them on computer screen and zoom in - big difference!

what size(BG)

Hey I'm new to ICS and this kinda stuff, what is the best size or app for background images to used/make if i want them as crisp and best looking as possible without too much cropping? It looks like I need a square kind of image but isn't the homescreen 702p (1280x720) aka not square? :/ I don't get it! help!
This should be posted in Themes. Could you move this please? The general is starting to become extremely cluttered.

Your question is a little confusing to me, but if I understand correctly, you want to create a wallpaper to use on your One XL (ATT + Rogers X). If so, make it at the full resolution of the screen.
There are also scenes though, that will pan left/right depending on how you scroll through your home screen. I'm not too certain of these resolutions, but if you keep the height the same (720px) and play with the width, it may just pan in different increments depending on the width.
Good luck,
~dan
i have no idea what rogers xl is...but i just bought this htc one x stock rom etc non rooter(don't know how) from my phone company simlock free etc...so no extra software for my phone company ....and I do want to know what the best aspect ratio/res is for pictures without zooming, i have 7 home screen but whenever i add a pic 1280x720 on my gallery(via SD -->usb) and select the picture and do ''set as...-->wallpaper'' I have to crop it too something that almost looks like a square...but I am not sure! and if I crop it the picture become blurry and ugly (at least that's from my experience...)
You need to double the width of the wallpaper, so for a 720P screen (AKA: 1280x720), your wallpaper should be 1280 pixels tall x 1440 pixels wide. For a 800x480 screen, the wallpaper should be 800 pixels tall x 960 pixels wide... And so on.
Hope that helps.

ProCapture Camera app takes better Pictures

Reading all the reviews the one thing most of them take issue with is the camera on the Moto X. There is something very common between them, the inconsistency from picture to picture. Most say the Moto X is capable of taking good pictures but you need to put up with several bad ones as well. If you take the info from the reviews it's not a "Camera" issue as much as a "Software" issue. The timing of the auto focus to the shutter seems off as well as possibly the color & sharpness of the pictures.
I own a Nexus 4 currently and it doesn't take the greatest pictures either with the AOSP camera. One thing I have noticed is Cyanogenmod's Focal camera app takes better pictures. I tried taking pictures with AOSP, Focal and ProCapture app and comparing them. While I am not using the paid version of ProCapture the pictures are sharper and the color is spot on vs AOSP and Focal, even though ProCapture is taking 3.2mp shots and AOSP/Focal are taking 8.0mp pictures.
Link to ProCapture(Free) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.neaststudios.procapture.free&hl=en
I know someone using ProCapture with their new Droid Maxx and says it has made a big difference in the image quality. This should obviously translate over to the Moto X as well. The full version is a few bucks and if someone is willing to purchase it and post their results for everyone that could help lots of X owners out.
Here are three pictures I took today and you can see how ProCapture's are sharper and the color is not washed out. First picture is AOSP, second Focal and last one is ProCapture.
I like the ProCapture app. I have the premium version. I will have to take some test shots to compare the two. However, I cannot find anyway of changing which app is launched when you use the twist gesture to open the camera. Every time I do it, it opens the stock camera. I have made the ProCapture app the default when swiping from the lockscreen but that does not apply to the gesture. Any ideas?
X
edit: One thing I wish the ProCapture had was an HDR setting.
HDR setting is in Focus/Scene option menu(second down on the left).
I'm very interested in seeing side by side shots you take. If you can take a variety of shots, in bright sunlight, the sky(good for color comparisons), low light, indoors, close ups, action shots, etc with both camera's and post them here.
As far as the gesture opening the app that's something you can't probably change with the stock software. Once developers start making rom's & mods for the Moto X I'm sure the gesture will be able to be reassigned to another app.

That's a lot of pictures. I will see what I can do.
As for the HDR setting, is it called something other than HDR? Cause it is not listed under the Focus/Scene option. I have the following:
Focus > Auto, Continuous, Infinity
Scene > Auto, Action, Portrait, Landscape, Night, Night portrait, Theatre, Beach, Snow, Sports, Sunset, Steady photo, Fireworks, Party, Candlelight, Backlight
Color effect > None, Mono, Sepia, Negative, Solarize, Posterize, Aqua, Blackboard, Whiteboard
Any comparison pictures you can take will be helpful for everyone. It can show its a software issue that can be fixed.
I'm using the free version of ProCapture, here is the HDR setting.

I'm really not so sure I see much of a difference. Here's my samples:

Moto X Focal:
Olympus E-PL1 with M.Zuiko 17mm F2.8 lens:
iPhone 5:
Nexus 4 Stock Camera:
Nexus 7 (2013) Stock Camera:
This is done with zero tweaking at all, straight out of the cameras. Even the mediocre Nexus 4 camera makes the Moto X look bad.

I understand testing the app without tweaking, but the reason I did a search for moto x & Procapture was simply, the X doesn't give users the ability to access settings like white balance, exposure, etc. I'm currently on an S3, and was set on either an X or a Droid Maxx, but the camera quality was holding me back. To get decent pics on my S3 I have to play with those settings, but with the stock Moto camera software, I wouldn't have that option. Now if it's possible to get rid of the purple tint that some reviewers are seeing, or give it better contrast, I wouldn't be so apprehensive. But I thought the point of getting an app like that was so you could tweak the settings to get it closer to the better cameras out there.
ProCapture allows many more options to tweak your shots. I used backlight mode this weekend to take pics were my daughter was standing in front of a large glass wall of windows with the sun coming through. With out back light mode you could hardly see her, with it on she popped to the front of the image. This is on my Nexus 4.
Now if you haven't heard Moto is pushing out an update to T-Mobile users right now that fixes the camera issues. The pictures side by side show a dramatic change in quality.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/7353/moto-x-update-dramatically-improves-camera-quality
Downside is can't use the cool wrist flick feature thing.
i agree, procapture is a very good camera, expecially to take panorama pics.
but in my opinion the big limit of this app is when you play with options and effect, because, while stock's camera reset values when you launch the app, procapture doesn't do that, but only for exposure (if you check it in settings).
so if you play with values when you launch in another time the app you have to reset all the values by yourself. i sent an email to the dev to make the app reset values when you lanch it.
I used Procapture far a while and was very pleased with it. Had you given FV-5 Camera try? I use it for now and for now i stay with it as it makes for me the best images.

You can do a separate exposure and focus though. I used to enjoy ProCamera but I think I can produce better shots with Camera FV-5.
Wow I just saw this post. I was about to give up on my Moto X camera and call it a loss for indoor photos.
Camera FV-5 changed that. This thing is great. Once you read through the manual to figure out adjustments, this thing takes great photos.

yes i use it since my RAZR. You have to read the manual (pdf) to get knowledge of the full potential of the app. The developer is releasing in some weeks a beta app for taking videos
by the way, there was a big bug when taking photos in portrait with Moto X. The images freezes. This was solved in the last update.

[Q] Photo app of N5 takes photos os a larger area then what is shown on the preview

Hi
I noticed this odd thing with the Nexus 5 camera and searched over all different reviews and forums but could not find a single mention of it.
When I take a photo with the Nexus 5 native camera app, the photo taken will always cover a larger area then what was seeing in the preview. For example, Lets say you want to take a photo of your monitor screen and (regardless of using the zoom or not) you position the phone so the borders of the monitor cannot be seen in the photo. Once you snap the photo you will notice you can see the border of the monitor and some... the resulting photos always cover a larger area then what is seen on the phone.
Has anyone noticed this or am I missing something?
Thanks

Resolution. The camera resolution is superior to your screen resolution. Compare the screen spec. to any full res shot details to see the difference.

Screen is 16:9 but the camera sensor is 4:3.
If you drop the camera down to 2 mpx widescreen, what is in the screen will all be photo

Thanks guys for clarifying. It makes sense. I didn't think about it as somehow this wasn't an issue with my old Note2 even though the screen resolution was lower, with the same 8mpx camera.
Depends if it was taking widescreen pictures or not.

The Nexus 5 also has a wider angle lens than most phones too. That might have something to do with it as well.
i had this finding too not long ago.. at the expense of some important photos of precious moments "ruined" by this mismatch of screen preview and actual resolution..
and my way out is to use apps that handle this situation..
e.g. "Snap Camera HDR" has a "Preview Cropping" setting.. when this setting is turned off, the screen preview shows exactly as the current resolution ur photo is set at (with some blank margins at left/right or top/down sides to cater for the resolution differences..)
im just a happy user of this app and am in no way associated with it.. there is free version in the play store and xda here so u may give it a try..

[Completed] Snapchat not full screen/weird aspect ratio

I'll try to make this brief. I just bought this phone a few hours ago, it's a "Konrow Cool-K", very weird brand I had no idea existed.
The phone itself is performing well so far. The cameras, on the other hand, not so much. The primary camera is, allegedly, 13MP, the front one being 5MP. The aspect ratio on these, though, is 4:3. When using Snapchat, the app won't go fullscreen and the camera seems stretched (Refer to picture below). As you can tell, there's a black bar underneath the UI, which is still a good chunk of the screen.
Is there a way to fix this?
Thanks in advance.
