[Completed] Snapchat not full screen/weird aspect ratio - XDA Assist

I'll try to make this brief. I just bought this phone a few hours ago, it's a "Konrow Cool-K", very weird brand I had no idea existed.
The phone itself is performing well so far. The cameras, on the other hand, not so much. The primary camera is, allegedly, 13MP, the front one being 5MP. The aspect ratio on these, though, is 4:3. When using Snapchat, the app won't go fullscreen and the camera seems stretched (Refer to picture below). As you can tell, there's a black bar underneath the UI, which is still a good chunk of the screen.
Is there a way to fix this?
Thanks in advance.

Captivate camera - Is ther a guide to using it and taking the best shots?

I haven't been impressed with the photos at all. Most of them are blurry. I know nothing about camera settings on this phone. Is there a guide out there somewhere?
Thanks!

The camera sucks. Sucks defined as: takes blurry pictures in daylight. A total fail. The video is pretty good 'tho.
I love the camera. Takes better photos than my 3gs.

I've been using the camera a lot and it's been really nice for me, for a phone camera, and I'm used to dslr's...
Side arrow>Gear (Settings)
Camera:
Page 3/5, check Anti-Shake
Page 4/5, check Auto contrast (can't remember if that is a default)
Wrench:
Just a personal preference, I set Review to 2 seconds to see the picture after it's taken.
Other than that, you just have to make sure the camera's focused on what you select before taking the picture, and it should be fine.
Make sure u tap on the screen to focus on the area u want to take the picture of.

I have to agree with the OP, here. The images aren't so much blurry as they are highly compressed for some reason. I wonder if there's a way to lower the JPEG compression. It's like the images look good on the display, but when you look at them on your computer or (in the rare occasion) an iPhone 4's RetinaDisplay, you really see the compression artifacts. The video is not much better.
There must be a way to solve this.
I know it sounds obvious, but seriously make sure the camera lense isn't smudged before you start taking pictures. It's flush with the back of the phone and so really really easy to smudge with your fingers while handling the phone.
I was noticing how some pictures were insanely crisp and others were blurry in the same lighting conditions and everything, and I am pretty sure it's because of the lens being smudged. Just throwing that out there.

[Q] Camera help!

Everyone seems to think the froyo camera (2.2) is phenomenal, but I really must be missing something, because mine sucks. This is my second G2X, and both cameras had the same issues. The biggest issue is that the focus is always slightly off, no matter what setting I choose (yes, manual setting can make the focus somewhat better, but that's not a real fix for me as I can't always be manually focusing the camera to catch a shot in time). Basically, the picture looks decent, but if you enlarge any details at all, they are fuzzy. I'm obviously doing something wrong, and if anyone could help me figure out what that is, it would really be a huge help.
Thanks in advance!
Try pixel peeping on a PC. The gallery app does not seem to render properly when zooming on the phone.
Sent from my Nexus One using Tapatalk
I have checked out the pics on my pc, and they're almost ALL fuzzy. Doesn't matter what the lighting was like, the setting of the phone, whether the object was stationary...they are decent from far away, but up close, not that great at all. If you're getting great shots, what settings are you using? Auto everything? Some preset scene? Or specially tweaked settings?

Try taking off the battery cover and taking a pic. If its better than you may have forgotten to take off that little liner that covers the lens or the battery door camera hole is dirty or something
Even with the back cover off the phone, the pictures look the same.
Just to make sure we're all on the same page - when I look at the pictures on my pc, they look fine, but when I zoom in at all, the pixelation is extremely obvious. I do not have this problem with pics from my sony camera (non-phone).
Are people saying their photos are good FOR A CAMERA-PHONE, or are they actually good photos?? If they are actually good, are people using special settings??
Mine are great. Do you have the settings set to very fine image quality? Also make sure you are taking them using 8mp rather than 2mp.

that photo looks fine to me. remember this a camera phone, just because it is an 8MP camera that doesn't mean it will take crystal clear shots. A lot of the issues will come down to a poor/cheap lens, overall the camera take good pics for a camera on a phone.
Until manufacturers start using quality lenses like the new WP7 device named sea ray from nokia which uses a carl zeiss lens, pictures will not be great.

I checked out your link and it that pic looks very good to me. I do not think a camera phone is going to give you the clarity and detail a larger ccd does in a $400 digital camera.

Camera Aspect Ratio

When taking pics they all are in the 4:3 aspect ratio (both in 2D & 3D). Anybody knows a way to take pics that fill the screen (without post cropping them) when beeing watched (like the videos do)?
tnx
Sent from my wonderful
LG-P920 using XDA App
I suspect this is just the simple fact that the sensors are 4:3 ratio, when shooting video the sensor probably just ignores so many pixels at the top and the bottom to fake the aspect ratio.
So if you want 16:9 then just frame your photos as if the top and bottom is not there, then crop them on the PC later. You can probably even crop them on the phone itself but I have not looked into it myself as I do not see that it matters. You are always best keeping them 4:3 in case you want to have them printed later.
Better to have the option on the phone itself
Hello Alex,
I was using the n900 as well before i bought the o3d. I agree with you that the camera quality was much better on the n900.
And it was possible to choose the 16:9 resolution - although i think the sensor on the n900 was 4:3 as well.
in between i had the atrix for 1 month or so - it also offered to shoot in 16:9, but this one was not 3d ;-).
I think it would be great to be able to see the pics just taken as a "screen filling experience"! Cropping by hand or on the PC is an option, but it would be more convenient to have it as an option on the phone, to take pictures in the original screen ratio.
thanks for your reply anyway
heiwid
There are a few more options in lgCamera and it also lets you record video at higher bitrates.
It seems a bit twitchy since V10d firmware though, you might have to switch between the image viewer and back before the preview starts working.
Still photos still come out very over-processed though, so I am guessing this is something only LG can improve or someone hacking around with Android itself.
[EDIT]
Actually be careful with that app, it just locked up my phone. Annoying as it seemed fine firmware V10b.
Thanks for the hint.
I tried it - worked - but no 16:9 settings as well except 720x480.
But this is not an option for taking pics.
I think you are right, Only LG could change it.
It looks like the view of the software engineers @ LG is not as wide as the one of the hardware engineers ;-).
That LG camera app is as buggy as hell, total crap.

Camera very mediocre: Sorta "fixed" - use HDR. See also IUNI Rom in Dev

Quite disappointed. Tried two roms, CM and xnph300 camera. With/without "Clear image". Photos are washed out compared to Nexus 5.
Attached are two photos of a mousepad with a woman's picture on it. One is "Clear image", opo. One is Nexus 5.
---Edit---
Here is a series of three landscapes. LTR: iPhone 5, Nexus 5, OPO (Clear Image)
---Edit 2---
From p. 4 of this thread
There's a thread on IUNI rom over in the Android Dev thread. Short takes
- Everyone loves the UI and camera
- Got to flash a CM recovery to get it to load
- Got to use ColorOS gapps - especially to get english to work. (link in thread, not on OP)
- Got to get the latest beta (link in the thread, not on OP) to get play store to work
- Battery usage poor - although, as usual one or two say not so.
Guess I'll hold off for a while - don't have time to flail around with it rt. now.
It's not washed out. It's white balance problem in my opinion.

I agree... The camera is extremely mediocre. I have tried different apps and settings and the pictures come out dull and kinda grainy.

This photo came straight from the camera, just minor cropping to the background. Exif data shows it came from
the OnePlus. This was taken with the program Camera FV-5, in macro mode.
I disagree completely. The camera is just fine if you know how to use it.

Oh, "how to use it". Hmm. Leme think. Point at subject. Hit the button.
That what you mean? That's what I did with the samples I posted. You'll note that the OPO sux.
If what you mean by "how to use it" is, ah, flail around, set "smart screen" with Focus mode = "macro" - or similar, I'll go with "Sux".
Sheesh.

Seems you are confused. "Straight from the camera" it did not come - as you say in the third sentence. Yes, keeping things straight for three sentences is a pain...
For the record, and to explicitly say what's implicit in my original post, iPhone and Nexus 5 don't require "pro" cameras or special settings to take decent pics.

The camera does not "sux". It's in fact a very capable camera. It's no Galaxy S5, but it does the job, and then some. I take 98% of my pictures in HDR so maybe that has something to do with it. But I'm pretty content with it regardless; it could be much, much worse.
Can you try ColorOS? I also had a Nexus 5 and found the camera on the Opo a bit grainy, over-exposed etc using CM11s
I can assure you that I enjoy the camera a lot more now.

I want to run "standard" roms such as Mahdi, etc. I'll try to get the APK and maybe break down and try the rom itself. Thanks for the suggestion. Don't want the perfect camera, just one that is not so dramatically mediocre.

Looks like getting the APK is hard. Sigh.
Use HDR
After much flailing, I see that using the HDR setting will get acceptable pics. Not great yet, but acceptable. To me.

Well, excuse me for not being 1000% truthful from your mind. I never use the default camera app, but, I have used the camera app that comes with the one, and it does quite well. Perhaps later, I will take one, using the default camera app to show you that it does a good job, and, as with most errors with phone cameras, it is the operator who does not know how to compose, focus and HOLD IT STILL.
Please forgive me for not being 1000% accurate in my statement. My point was this was from the camera, without any editing or photoshopping in any way. {sarcasm off}

Wut... the HDR produces terrible colors and exaggerated HDR photos that belong in reddit.com/r/****tyhdr
Anyone know what toggling each profile with a filled white circle does (HDR, Clear Image, Night, Mono, Sepia and so on)? Is it using a combination of all enabled profiles?

it seems that ColorOS Camera seems to make a HUGE difference compared to CM in terms of quality. (it was reported and review this one on Find 7 witch has same optics, that w/ CM camera seems way worst than on ColorOS)
so my suggestion is to try the whole ColorOS ROM (stable or beta) or Iuni ROM (this one has Oppo's Camera app ) and then you'll see the full power of this hardware piece

Will Z3 still need rooting in order to get 20MP in Superior Auto Mode?

Someone posted this about the Z2 and why you need to root it in order to get the best camera resolution:
Basically it gives you the option to do things you normally couldn't. Install custom software. Delete apps that normally can't be deleted. Modifications to things like camera (eg the phone currently only uses 8mp in superior auto, but the mod allows it to use 20mp in superior) all kinds of tweaks and stuff that without root access, you wouldn't be able to install.
So does anyone know if the Z3 will have this issue resolved or will you still need to root it in order to get 20MP in Superior Auto Mode? I think it's so stupid that you have to root it in order to get that. It should be a choice, not forced. Hopefully it won't need to be.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thank You,

Yes, you will need root to use 20.7 in SA.
But why do you need it, you need to have screen like cinema paper to watch 20.7 mp in native size.

Well when I transfer those pics to my pc and view them, I would think the difference would be noticeable? I mean 8 vs 20.7 sounds like a huge difference to me, even if both are still Sony-based. It's not quite cinema size, but my PC screen (21") is still much bigger than any phone screen I'll ever have.

Check this site 75inch*50inch is size of native picture at 19.4MP.
Also I doubt that you have 5600*3600 screen resolution, that means half of this pixels won't even be shown, unless you zoom in a lot.
But again, who takes picture to zoom like telescope.

Ok took a look at it. Thank you.
Well that's the thing....... I wouldn't say I zoom in a lot, but sometimes I do. It's just nice to know that when I do, the sharpness won't fade away.
So you think the quality of Superior Auto Mode at 8MPs will still be really nice? I just don't get why they can't let ppl choose for themselves? I hate being forced to choose stuff. That's one of the main reasons why I stick with Android over like Apple is b/c of the choice, the freedom. If I got it I may root it, or not. Who knows.

8MP is more then enough for everything that we "little" people want to do with pictures. Trust me, I was against that, but since I research a lot, I found out that I don't need more then 8MP.
In my situation, I have 15.6inch HD screen. That means even 2MP are enough to be shown in native size, everything beyond that is for sharpness.
Why they don't let you choose, well I don't know, but I heard that SA downscale 20mp in 8MP for better image. But don't use this as true because I didn't search for this one.
Take a research if that is true, and then try to research how downscale makes photo.

lol I dunno....... I have a Sony camera, 16.2 megapixels.......... and it's a fantastic camera! Carl Zeiss lens and everything! So I am picky about that stuff.
How does downscaling a 20MP pic to 8MPs make it better?
I actually tested the Nokia Lumia 1020 this past week for a phone survey/focus group I'm doing. It wasn't a bad phone really, but 41MP camera? It's a joke man. The pics came out like nothing special at all. Obviously when it comes to cameras, there's a lot more than just MPs at play (focus, light sensitivity, flash, etc). But Sony knows that and incorporates a great deal of that knowledge into their cameras and phone cameras too. I'm not surprised you said 41 to 15MPs for the Lumia, because I swear, the pics I took on the 1020 LOOKED like they were not even 15MPs. I don't get why they advertise 40MPs if it gets downscaled? At least with the Z3 you can get 20.7MPs if you use normal mode. I just don't know man. We'll see what happens.

Electrash.........I think I got my answer:
Saw this review on the Z3. Some interesting things on the camera on page 3. Sample pics at bottom look pretty sharp to me, even when zoomed in: http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/Sony-Xperia-Z3-Review_id3795/page/3
The Sony Xperia Z3's camera user interface is mostly easy to use, especially when you're sticking with Sony's Superior Auto mode, which attempts to automatically pick the best settings for you, depending on the scene you're trying to photograph, and tends to be pretty accurate most of the time. By default, the Sony Xperia Z3's Superior Auto mode shoots at 8 MP. It does use the full resolution of the 20 MP sensor, but scales the pictures down - this way, the user ends up with high-quality 8 MP photos of 'easy-to-share' size that don't exhibit less visible artifacts when viewed in actual size.
We were, frankly, surprised to see how natural the color representation of images taken with the Sony Xperia Z3 is. Sony usually boosts the color saturation and contrast a bit (or a lot), resulting in flashy hues, which are not representing the scene in front of the lens in a completely credible manner. With the Z3, however, Sony tweaked takes a what-you-see-is-what-you-get approach, producing natural colors. The automatic white balance measurements are valid with most every shot, leaving no weird overcasts in the scene. Last, but not least, the phone is able to grab a fine amount of detail..

I zoom in and crop on most pics and wife's S5 is better than my z2 as when I try and zoom and crop my pics are lacking in detail so I think in some cases more mp are better. Depends on what you want. 8mp is not always enough for certain situations.
Hi. I would like to thank you all for this interesting topic. I learned a lot about how the Z3 camera works and what's the point of 8MP/20MP
